Chapter 1
* Jaxxen *
The second I spotted the pretty new girl flitting around Old Tomโs tavern, my heart exploded and then repaired itself all at once. It was as if I had found the other half of my soul, and I couldnโt fathom the strain. It takes all my control to remain seated at the bar with Nason talking my ear off.
I watch her clean up after the local yokels, tracking every movement like prey.
โShe showed up here last week,โ Nason reported when he caught on to my staring. โTomโs letting her live upstairs.โ
I take a pull of my beer, nodding. The girlโs frumpy, wearing a godawful baggy green sweater, which hides her ass, with equally loose-fitting jeans. She has long strawberry blonde hair pulled up haphazardly, but it shines beautifully under the low lighting.
Her careful actions as she keeps the entrance in her sights sing to my darknessโwhispering sheโs in trouble. Every time she jumps and awkwardly covers her furtive behavior with a tight smile, it becomes clearer. Sheโs on the run. Yup, trouble with the capital T. I wish the place wasnโt so damn dark. I canโt tell the color of her eyes from where Iโm sitting, and my curiosity grows the longer I observe her.
I need another drink, but Tomโs too busy gossiping with his friends to care or notice. Then I smelled the cloying perfume I originally came into town for before spotting her.
โJax,โ Briaโs husky voice purrs over my left.
Nason sits up straight, smiling. Poor guy could probably have a shot at Bria if he asked her out, but he thinks sheโs classy. I shake my head, knowing better. Briaโs a cock whore.
When I pick up my empty bottle, Bria caresses my shoulder. Standing, I glowered at her with a frown. She knows not to touch me unless itโs when my dickโs shoved down her throat.
โNot tonightโ was all the explanation I felt she deserved before laser-focusing on the mystery girl.
Being the biggest and tallest man in the pub, the girl saw me coming. Her long legs scurried around tables and customers as I intentionally corralled her behind the counter. So easy.
โHi.โ I lean over to catch her eye, but she picks up a towel. โWhatโs your name?โ
She swallowed hard, and I hated that I made her nervous. โCoralee, but people call me Cora.โ
โWell, Iโm Jaxxen, but I prefer Jax. We have shit in common already.โ
I spot a flicker of a smile on her lips, but she turns to leave, so I wag the bottle in the air. โCan I get another, please, Coralee?โ
She finally raises her head, eyes going to the entrance before deftly handing me a cold brew. Coralee hasnโt met my stare, and I want to grab her chin to make her. I like her height. Sheโs maybe five feet nine, and although a nutritious meal would do her well to fill out those gaunt cheekbones, she seems to have a shapely body underneath those ugly clothes.
โGo on a date with me,โ I blurt, then berate my rashness.
Now she peers up beneath light-colored lashes, and I grin reassuringly. Her hazel eyes hold fire, something I hoped to see. Coralee looks me up and down. I know she likes what she sees, but her pretty mouth curves into a sneer.
โIโm not looking to date anyone.โ Her sweet, raspy voice hits me square in the chest, but her words sound detached but firm.
With a wink I try to thaw her icy walls with a lame quip, โMe either, just you.โ
โNo,โ she twists away with a lip curl, dismissing me to serve other patrons.
As I made my way back to the stool beside Nason, I took out my phone. If Coralee expects me to give up after a rude rejection, she needs to think again. Thereโs nothing sexier than a woman recognizing danger and spitting in its face.
I placed an order for a daily delivery of a single sunflower, complete with my contact number and name, regardless of the cost. Iโve spent more on lesser undertakings.
I listen to Nason drone on about his ranch as I finish my beer, continuing to track how Coralee avoids the local men and conversations. New faces are rare, and the locals are curious. Sheโs definitely a girl with a past, and I wonder how she got Tom onboard with letting her live in the cramped attic space.
I moved to Perla, Montana, years ago after having my cabin built with nothing in mind but losing myself in nature. The fifty acres I own twenty miles outside town render me an outsider to the tight-knit community, but I prefer it this way. Iโve always been a private person.
Coming to Toms every few weeks led me to meet Nason and fuck Bria when I wished, but after meeting Coralee, I canโt deny Iโve been going through the motions lately. I feel bored as hell, but I remind myself that this is what I chose. Just seeing her sparks emotions long forgotten. Iโve enjoyed my solitary lifestyle, but itโs time to consider my future. I am not getting any younger. My standards werenโt typical, though. I wanted a strong woman who understands life will give you shit and spit you out, and itโs up to you to get back up.
I parted ways with Nason an hour later. Briaโs lurking near my jeep like a stalker. I can practically smell her perfume before I see her overly made-up face reflected in the lamp post above my ride.
โMy place, baby?โ She parts her painted red lips, licking them with more vigor than necessary.
โItโs over,โ I bluntly state.
If I continue to see Bria, the townies will tell Coralee, and then the girl wonโt have anything to do with me. She shouldn’t have to deal with my drama.
โWhy?โ She whines as if she doesnโt have five others on speed dial, โI thought you liked me.โ
I sigh, opening the door. โYouโll find someone else. Take care.โ
I drove away, leaving her pouting in the parking lot. Her daddy owns half the town. Sheโll have no trouble finding somebody to piss him off with.
Once Iโm home, my huskies, Ren and Stimpy, trot off the wooden deck to inspect me. I pet them absently, sitting to remove my boots. After feeding them, I pinned the code in my office, settling at my desk to investigate Coralee. Where did she come from? How long does she plan to stay? Tomโs converted living space above the tavern is not suitable for a young woman. Thereโs not much crime here, but sheโs vulnerable all alone there.
My house has plenty of room.
Closing my eyes, I picture her too-thin face. My cock twitched, recalling how her upper lip sneered at my lame flirting. I give it a month before Coraleeโs disinterest turns into obsessive desire. Maybe Iโm overstepping, but I hope sheโll move in with me once I gain her trust. Iโll make sure she feels safe and stops running from whatever is bothering her.
What the hell was a girl like her doing in Perla?
Hacking into Tomโs shitty computer system isnโt hard, and it isnโt the first time Iโve done it. Iโve probed into the lives of everyone in town. Theyโd stroke out to learn I know their dirty little secrets. Iโm not surprised to find out he hadnโt put her in the books. I bet my left nut she told the old sap some sob story, and he agreed to what she asked for.
For two days I kept busy, receiving email alerts confirming that Coralee received my gifts. She probably never had a man send her flowers simply asking for a call or text, and I tell myself to wait a week before returning. Patience. She hasnโt run yet, so she figures sheโs enjoying the attention.
I camped out with my dogs for a few days deep on my property, tracking predators and checking on the underground bunker, which was the deciding factor when I bought the fifty-acre lot just to keep my thoughts from Coralee.
I imagine her with me around the fire, lying in my pop tent while I devote the night to her body under the stars, pressing her to the ground and making her beg for it.
When the weekโs up, so is Coraleeโs time. She can try to hide from her past, but now that Iโve set my sights on her, she canโt hide from me.
*Coralee*
I wistfully touch the sunflowers on the rickety table before heading downstairs to the smelly bar. Tom said the flowers arenโt local, so Jaxxen spent a pretty penny shipping them in for me.
Me.
Tom didnโt explain much about Jaxxen apart from the fact that the manโs a loner who rarely ventures into town. He supposedly built a large cabin on the outskirts of Perla before arriving in this quaint little western paradise. He warned me to be careful when the first sunflower arrived with a sneaky grin. It was his playful chuckle that made me refrain from throwing the long-stemmed flower in the trash. Blushing and waving my hands, I convinced Tom thereโs nothing going on with Jaxxen. Itโs a sweet gesture, but I canโt let down my guard for anyone.
Pretending Iโm a normal woman instead of a broken one, which came easier to me than bartending.
The man is dangerously hot, though. Jax has the most intense gray eyes Iโve ever seen and a disarming smile. Heโs huge, too. The mountain man was huge with muscles on his muscles, towering above everyone with a watchful but confident presence.
Letting out a frustrated sigh, I tied a worn apron around my waist before helping the few customers in the bar. Tomโs more of a busybody than a worker, but he owns the tavern. I suppose he earned the right to whatever he wanted at his age.
I bite the inside of my cheek as men flirt and try to engage my interest throughout the evening. It doesnโt matter how nice these guys are; I wonโt reciprocate. Not only am I not interested, but I also never stay in one place for long.
The front door opens, and my eyes immediately dart over, making sure Bradenโs not there with a gun. No, itโs not my nightmare, but Jax. My face flames when I realize heโs staring right at me as he moves inside. Whoa, an unexpected but warm sensation zapped down my spine at the sharp connection I felt pass between us before breaking eye contact.
โCora!โ Tom yells, โGet Pat a bag of chips from the back, please.โ
Grateful for the distraction, I darted into the storeroom. Damn, Jax is seriously good-looking. Why did he intrigue me so much? Since the night we met, the way he smiled at me when I rejected him has looped through my restless mind. My rude behavior didnโt faze him. Then he had the gall to send flowers? Heโs persistent; Iโll give him that.
Reaching into a box of mixed snacks, I hear his deep timbre behind me, โHello, Coralee. Howโs your week going?โ
I steady my nerves before facing him. He is leaning his large frame against the door, blocking my escape.
Iโm not scared. Iโve known men who hurt women for fun, but he has shown no disrespect to anyone I have observed. His eyes donโt roam below my mouth, although I check out his low-slung jeans and the tight black shirt, and his broad torso stretches when he crosses his arms. He doesnโt acknowledge my obvious perusal or even seem to care, simply waiting in the doorway for an answer to his question, no doubt speculating why I havenโt contacted him.
โT-thank you for the flowers, but please stop. Um, theyโre lovely! Y-you sent your number butโฆ I mean, Iโm leaving soon.โ I stutter, avoiding his piercing gaze, hoping he gets the hint that thereโs no use pursuing me.
โDo you know why I decided on sunflowers, Coralee?โ His tone is impossibly deep, and it rumbles in my chest.
Licking my lips, Iriska glanced at those silver orbs. โNo?โ
โYou have such beautiful hazel eyes. Your dark pupil flares out into the most amazing yellows and gold with a blue ring surrounding them, reminding me of summer skies. I canโt wait to see your other colors bloom.โ
My panties take a hit as I gape at him. Is he serious? We only met last week. If we continued to stare at each other, I would get lost in his eyes. Heโs gorgeous, and my body betrays me every time he opens his mouth. Did he rehearse that sweet line?
โGo out with me.โ
โNo.โ
โWhy not? Weโll stay out of town if thatโs what youโre worried about, Coralee.โ
โCora,โ I correct him, wondering how he knew I prefer to keep indoors so the townsfolk wonโt catch sight of me. โWhere would you take me?โ
His lips quirked into a sinful smirk, and my heart galloped. โItโs a surprise.โ
โYour flowers surprised me,โ I mutter, wishing heโd back off.
Jax steps away from the entrance as if reading my mind. โGreat, but Iโm a persistent man. Come on, say yes. If you do, Iโll pick you up tomorrow at noon to spend the day with me.โ
I clenched my hands into fists. Is he an alpha control freak? I had my fill of that crap with Braden. โNo.โ
Clutching the bag of chips, I rushed past him and nearly threw them in Patโs face on my way to clear a booth. Why do I attract controlling men? Jaxxen has no clue who I am.The poor guy was wasting his time. I gave myself a few weeks in Perla to save money before finding a new shithole town.
True to Jaxโs word, he sat down at a table in the rear, producing a deck of cards. I try to avoid him, but work is work, and heโs a customer. After a few beers and another adorable attempt at asking me out, he switched to ice water. With a tight smile, I left two frosted bottles, signifying I was through serving him for a while. He smirked in response, confirming that he picked up on my resolve to blank him. That intention grew weaker by the hour, though, studying him out of the corner of my eye. His persistence and attentive presence were difficult to ignore. Also, the fact that heโs handsome and built like a tank doesnโt hurt either.
A blonde woman showing a lot of skin tried to sit with him, but he ran her off after a few minutes. Someone called her Bria, insinuating sheโs got money and time to spare and is always bugging Jax, but instead of letting my curiosity grow, I brush off the gossip. His lovers arenโt my concern. Although, I felt a kernel of jealousy when I saw her rake her red nails down his arm before she sauntered outside. Perla is small, and I risk being spotted by Braden working and living at the only bar around. Hopefully, staying here for a month wonโt be too lengthy.
โShould I kick Jax out?โ Tom asks at closing after emptying the till. โThat man isnโt hanging out to ogle my withered mug.โ
I shot him a reassuring grin. โItโs fine. He wants to chat. Iโll see you on Monday.โ
โIf youโre sure? You ainโt a kid, but no fucking on the pool table, Cora.โ
โTom!โ I gasped, blushing in mortification. Heโs such a cranky old fart, but Iโve grown fond of him. โThere will be no sex.โ
โAlright. Goodnight,โ he grumbled, giving Jax a nasty scowl before leaving us alone.
I turned off some lights before joining Jax. I desperately needed a shower to wash off the gross odor of beer and smoke from my hair. Sadly, one wasnโt available. Sponge baths in the break room sucked, but it was better than nothing. I am grateful to Tom for allowing me to live in the attic, but I must find other accommodations soon.
โThanks again for the flowers, but you need to understand Iโm not dating. Anyone.โ I informed him firmly, hiding my shaking hands under the tabletop.
โWho are you running from, Coralee?โ He cocks his head and wets his lips, watching my jaw drop at his intrusive question. โSurprised? Unlike others in this town believing the worst thing that can happen to them is a drought orโโ
โStop!โ I stood up, angry and scared. What the hell? Did Braden send him?
โWhatโs your last name? Mine is White.โ
I blink, getting whiplash from the change of conversations. โWhy do you care? Seriously, why are you bothering me? Are youโฆ really from here? Perla?โ
โYeah, I am. You intrigue me, and Iโll continue sending gifts and keep sitting here every night until you come to my cabin.โ
So, he can kill me? โUh…โ
He laughed, a low, rumbly sound. โThat sounded creepy as fuck. Sorry, what I mean is that I hate being in public, too. I have a great place, and you look like you could use a friend. And a good meal! Listen, I heard youโre staying upstairs, and Perla may seem safe, but we both know people hide evil intentions behind false smiles.โ
โWe do?โ I agree, but his rambling makes me curious.
โSure. Only last month some farmer got caught screwing his brotherโs wife, and he blew him away with a shotgun. Can you guess what his daughter did next?โ
I’m engrossed in the story, leaning forward. โDonโt tell me she blamed her dad?โ
โNah, she killed her mother. The uncle was dicking her too.โ
I covered my mouth, disturbed but not completely shocked. The worldโs full of whack-jobs. โHow nasty. Are you worried some shotgun-toting farmer will attack me?โ
โMaybe,โ he frowns at my nonchalance. What did he expect? Did he expect me to cry and beg him to protect me? โMy point is a young transient girl alone in a bar is mighty tempting. Gossip travels fast, and Iโm looking out for you. Trying to make friends at least.โ
I swallow hard, peering deep into his strange gray eyes. He relaxes in his seat, yet thereโs a promised conviction behind his words. Iโm oddly drawn to this striking man, and itโs dangerous. For him. Jax is so big he could snap my neck between two fingers, but I feel… safe. I shiver, realizing I havenโt appreciated the complex emotion of security in years. Freedom is an illusion, but Iโve grown accustomed to the dark side of life. Learned to read between the lines of how people present themselves. Still, his offer of friendship seems heartfelt if heโs not working an angle.
I softly answered his previous question by saying, โWinters, Coralee Winters.โ
Jaxโs brilliant smile warms my insides. โShit, one more thing we have in common. Winters and White. Fucking perfect. Wanna get out of this tavern?
I exhale, rubbing my worn-out eyes. The smell of booze and dusty old walls has gotten on my nerves these last few weeks, but I donโt know this man from Adam. Tom wouldnโt leave me with a crazy person, but why is he acting so nice?
โSay yes, Coralee. Lock up the joint and come home with me. I wonโt touch you, I promise. You have nothing to fear. Letโs spend some time together, and if you prefer this shithole, Iโll bring you back.โ Jax sounds so sincere it borders on pleading, and I canโt help but chuckle when his lower lip juts out.
Iโm blown away. Who is this person? โYou want me to go to your house to…talk?โ
He slowly stands, towering over me. โDonโt overthink this. Sayโฆโ
โYes.โ I blurt, my cheeks reddening.
He gives me another heartwarming grin, and I smile too. Gah, when was the last time I genuinely smiled? Am I at the point where I would rather trust a stranger than spend tonight worrying if every sound is Braden slithering from the shadows to return me to a life I ran from as fast as my legs would move?
I suppose I am because five minutes later weโre on the road to his place.
* Jaxxen *
I donโt allow Coralee to change her mind after saying sheโll come home with me. After she locked up the bar, I led her to my Jeep with more pep in my step than Iโve had in… a long time. Her nervous presence makes me want to ease her doubts, but I focus on taking off for my place while ignoring the speed limit. Itโs late, and no one is on the road.
โOh! I didnโt grab my stuff!โ She wrings her hands, gazing out the window.
I smile at myself. Thank fuck she agreed tonight after I threatened to stalk the poor girl. She could have called the sheriff or Tom to throw my sorry ass out, but luckily, I said the right thing for once in my life. Plus, I already ordered her clothes and set up a room. Without knowing her exact size, I purchased simple girly shit universally known to womankindโlike razors and yoga pants.
โHey, I got you covered. Donโt worry about anything,โ I tell her, and she nods with a confused laugh.
Once I park, she huffs, โYou call this place a cabin?โ
Shrugging, I greet the Huskies when they trot over. My two-story, five-room cabin is modernized, but Icampedout more than not. I thrived outdoors, and the house is a luxury when I need a hot shower and clean clothes.
โCome here and hold out your palm.โ
With a shy expression on her face, she joins me in front of the dogs. โTheyโre so cute.โ
I gripped her wrist, caressing her soft skin. She let out a startled gasp at the contact, making my dick twitch. Damn, I shouldnโt have touched her, but itโs necessary. โGuard.โ I firmly ordered Ren and Stimpy.
They both sniff Coralee with interest, then sit back on their haunches.
She gives me a charming nose-scrunched-up squint. โWhatโs that all about?โ
I hold her hand, hoping she feels the same connection I do as I lead her up the porch steps, saying, โExactly what it implies. As long as you are with the dogs, theyโll protect you with their lives.โ I gaze at her pretty eyes. โMe too, Coralee. Weโll look after you from now on.โ
She issues another gasp, avoiding my stare. The girl fears someone, and I will find out who. An unexpected relief surges through my body, realizing she’s finally on my property. Does she sense the same pull I do when weโre together?
I fucking hope so.
โTake off your shoes.โ I reluctantly let go and kicked off my boots.
She slips off her ratty sneakers, and I check the size. She follows me cautiously inside, looking around with wide eyes. I admire the fact that sheโs relaxed but watchful. Itโs never wise to lower your guard in new situations.
โYou live here… alone?โ She smiles at the layout.
The first floor hosts a spacious kitchen with an attached dining room, with a long breakfast bar separating the two on the right, with a lowered den on the left. I fixed up my home with authentic handmade pieces where I could. The large table by the garden window is my favorite piece, made of heavy oak with a flawless finish. My office is down a narrow hallway out of sight, but the four bedrooms upstairs are barely furnished. Maybe she will want to decorate if she sticks around.
โHopefully not for too much longer,โ I wink, watching her cheeks flush.
The red creeping above the collar of the awful sweater she wears boosts my ego. Some women can camouflage their desire, but she sure as hell isnโt one of them. First things first, though.
โCome on,โ I Igrabbed her again, dragging her upstairs. โI made up this room for you. Wash off and put on the robe I laid out.โ
She frowns, peering around the space I decorated with her in mind. โWow, you planned this? Are you always so pushy? Slow your roll, Jax. Do you normally instruct people on how to do everything, or are you saying I stink?โ
I canโt help but chuckle as I open the ensuite, flipping on the light to make sure I didnโt miss placing towels on the heating rack. Yes, Iโm a bossy asshole, but itโs good to know sheโll call me out on my bullshit. Weโll get along fine if she keeps that fire blazing.
Striding out of the bathroom, I caught her gazing out the window. Itโs a pleasant view when the sun is shining. The window offers a perfect height for observing the long drive and some of my outbuildings. Sheโs always on alert. I nearly demand she confess her fears but draw a deep calming breath instead. Thereโs plenty of time over the weekend to discover her demons.
โHey, you can be happy here. Youโre safe, Coralee.โ
She peers over her shoulder with downturned lips, โThanks.โ Her frown is kind of cute. โI donโt understand why youโre going out of your way for me, but thank you, Jax. I really could use a shower.โ
โWhen finished, join me downstairs, please.โ With another warm smile, I shut the door, hoping she does as I ask.
I slipped into the office to send my buddy Coraleeโs name and information. While she worked, I sneaked into the small room where she slept and snapped a picture of her license. She hails from Tucker City and is a few weeks shy of turning twenty-one. I told myself that if she were eighteen, I would only befriend her, even though my desires would complicate things. Finding out sheโs over twenty settled my decision to pursue her romantically.
After Iโm through, I head to the kitchen. It’s three in the morning, but I want to feed her. Just by looking at Coralee, I can tell she doesnโt eat right. Itโs messed up that a cool girl like her is living so poorly.
โJax?โ
I turn away from the stove to give Coralee a thorough once-over. Thereโs the stunning girl I knew she kept hidden under a frumpy disguise. The black thigh-high robe shows off her mile-long legs. Her strawberry blonde hair is darker when wet, the red taking over. Those pretty hazel eyes appear happy for the first time since we met, and my heart pumps faster.
โI hope you had everything you needed.โ My tone sounds casual as I continue cooking.
Iโm fucking fuming, though. On the inside of her right heel is a two-inch scar that looks fresh. A knife wound? Is it self-inflicted? If not, why the hell would someone stab her? Curious, but not wanting to ruin the mood, I leave the questions burning at the tip of my tongue.
Coralee meekly sits on a stool at the counter. โWhy do you have so many feminine products if itโs just you here?โ
The truth might scare her off, but Iโm not a liar either. Placing a plate of bacon and eggs in front of her, I offered a shrug instead of a verbal response. When I simply stare, she scans the food.
โAre you eating too?โ She bites her lower lip.
My cock strains against my jeans, watching her wrap her pink tongue around crisp bacon. โNo. You worked your ass off tonight and deserve a hot meal. How old are you?โ
She avoids my gaze, suddenly genuinely interested in the eggs. โOh, twenty-two. You?โ
I sigh, crossing my arms. โIโll tell you if you stop fucking lying. Real age?โ I raise my eyebrows, daring her to bullshit me.
Her eyes tear up, but before I apologize, they clear. Sheโs fighting with herself; I recognize the signs. Iโm a stranger, but she wants to trust me. I understand all too well the internal struggle.
She squares her shoulders, meeting my glare. โIโm twenty, okay? Donโt rat me out to Tom because he has a strict code about being twenty-one to work or drink at his bar.โ
I plaster a soft smile on my face. โHis son died at seventeen from alcohol poisoning. It fucked up his marriage. Iโm thirty-four. No need to lie, Coralee. Nothing you say will change how I feel about you.โ
She drops her fork. โHow do you feel? You donโt even know me. Thatโs sad. Crap, I shouldnโt have deceived him.โ
โHeโll get over it.โ I waved her concern and comments away. โWhen youโre done, you should hit the hay. I promised a surprise, remember?โ
Those hazel orbs light up, and I resist the impulse to touch her by facing the sink. She slides off the stool, saying good night in a sweet, kind voice before leaving. I let out a deep breath, retiring to my office. Damn, keeping my hands off of Coralee will be rough.
Now that I have more information, I order all kinds of stuff for her. I may be ordering too much, but I believe that spoiling her wonโt cause any harm. Sheโs going through some real shady shit, I can tell. I should have found out more facts before welcoming her into my home, but itโs too late. When I looked into her eyes last week, an inexplicable urge to protect her overwhelmed my senses. Sheโs lost and alone, and although I enjoyed moving to Montana, Iโve isolated myself too.
Until she orders me to fuck off, she’s stuck with me.
Chapter 2
* Jaxxen *
Coralee rolled out of bed twenty minutes after I woke up. I heard her puttering around in her room before I started the coffeemaker. She skips downstairs, her tight little body hidden by wearing saggy pants and a fugly pea green sweater. I meet her freshly scrubbed face with a frown.
โThere are clothes in your closet that should fit. Please, wear them.โ
Jutting out a hip, she asks, โAre you saying you donโt like my threads?โ
โOwn a mirror?โ I chuckle at her prissy tone. โWhy do you hide behind ugly fucking sweaters?โ
She flushes a pretty pink. โNo reason. I wasnโt aware the shirts were up for grabs. Fine, Iโll change.โ
โHurry up.โ I grin at her backside, laughing when she stomps on the landing to emphasize her displeasure at being told her outfits suck.
I finish packing food into the cooler just as she comes back wearing dark jeans that hug her ass and a short-sleeved light blue flannel. Fuck me, sheโs big-breasted! I stare at her tits straining against the material. How am I supposed to refrain from eye-fucking her all day?
She catches me gawking, letting out a huff as she struggles to keep the shirt away from her perfect chest. โItโs a little snug. I should put my sweater back on.โ
โNo,โ I growl, then laugh awkwardly, making her smirk. โLooks good. Itโs getting late. You look great.โ
Outside, we pull on our shoes, and I load the vehicle while she coos at the huskies. I watch her giggle over their wet kisses, feeling lighthearted. I rarely receive visitors, so they donโt interact with people unless I take them with me into town. They obviously like her, sitting still while she runs her slender fingers through their thick fur.
โWhat are their names? I canโt believe I didnโt ask last night!โ When she shifts, the sunlight turns her hair a brilliant blonde color with soft red undertones.
โRen and Stimpy.โ I pet them to stop staring at her.
She lets out a peal of laughter. โAwesome job naming them.โ
โGlad you approve.โ Once more I peek at Coralee. Sheโs charming as hellโfrumpy or otherwise.
She beams at my dogs. โAre you good doggies? Yes, you are!โ
Clearing my throat to dispel the jealousy I experience at her showering the boys with affection, I open the door for her. โGet in.โ
Now she gives me that cute frown-squint, โSo bossy.โ
The weatherโs warm, and the Big Sky Country is clear of depressing clouds. Perfect for sightseeing. With the mountains before us, I point out things on my property I think sheโll enjoy learning about, which she eagerly soaks up. The Ponderosa pine trees give some shade as I drive at an easy pace.
โWow, fifty acres,โ she sighs, arm propped out the window. โItโs so beautiful here, Jax. When I was young, I wanted to come here.โ
โIs that why you chose Perla?โ I casually question, fishing for information in case the person sheโs running from deduced sheโd retreat to Montana.
She shrugs, looking away. I let the subject drop, noticing her body going rigid. Itโs another five miles to the waterfall I plan to take her to. I lucked out locating it after my initial purchase and worked for over a year clearing the surrounding area.
Quiet minutes pass before I hear her sharp inhale when she catches sight of the water glistening in the sun. Before Iโm finished turning the key to cut the engine, sheโs dashing to the edge of the deep pool the cascading ten-foot deluge creates. The spotโs secluded, but I made sure there are two exit points in either direction.
โSurprise!โ I lamely exclaim.
She swivels on her heels, glowing with delight. โThis was the date you planned?โ
โIs,โ I correct her, needing to touch her, so I do. I seize her hand, and she doesnโt mind. โThis is a date, Coralee. Iโve never brought anyone out here. This can be our secret spot.โ
She looks down, biting her lip. I gently chuck her chin, bringing her face back up. We study each other for a few moments before she blushes, grinning at my ogling. I can see why a guy would chase after her. Sheโs adorable.
โHungry?โ Stepping backward, I released her with the realization she probably thought I lied about taking her somewhere special. โFind a spot for the blanket?โ
โOkay. Thank you, Jax.โ She runs to the jeep. โThis is wonderful. Really?โ
โWeโre just beginning,โ I tease.
โUgh, I hate that expression,โ she grumbles, wrestling with the quilted groundsheet I recently bought. Iโm a big man but overestimated its size.
Chuckling, I set the cooler aside to help her out. โWhy?โ
She jerks a shoulder like itโs obvious. โSaying itโs a start means there will be an end. A bad one.โ
I canโt have her second-guessing my intentions. โNot with me. Iโll show you plenty more. All good, all for you.โ
โThatโs nice, but youโre kind of getting ahead of yourself.โ She plops down once we situate the quilt, straightening her legs out, gazing at the water. โToday is enough.โ
I squatted by her side, examining her expressions as I asked her the question driving me crazy, โWho hurt you?โ
She stiffens. โEveryone has hurt somebody, Jax. Why do you live out here all alone? I donโt think you do though, with all those womenโs clothes, unless youโre a cross-dresser?โ
Funny girl. โHow about we trade tragic backstories?โ She rolled her eyes. โYou first. Who are you dodging? I promise I wonโt judge you or tell anyone here.โ I mean townies because my buddyโs investigating her past as we speak. โShare one secret, and Iโll do the same.โ
She sighs heavily, dragging a hand through her hair, then studies me with resignation written on her pretty face. โHe was my fiancรฉ. Or rather, he told me he was. I was given to him when I was seventeen, and I ran after I turned eighteen.โ
Holy shit. I figured she left an awful situation, but this is heavy.
Keeping my voice neutral, I respond, โOkay, so itโs been a few years.โ
โMonths,โ she bites out, looking pissed, and my fists curl, imagining pummeling her abuser. โThat was the first time.โ
I sit down close to her, making sure thereโs a gap between us. โHe found you, and you got away again? So, how long have you been running?โ
She palms her face like Iโm annoying the shit out of her. โJaxxen, donโt act as if you can help. Youโre sweet with the flowers and everything, but I shouldnโt have said anything. Iโll be moving along soon.โ
Coralee scowls when I ruefully chuckle. โI can help. I will help. As for leaving? Over my dead body, and Iโm hard to kill. I purchased those clothes for you, sunflower. You need a friend, and now you have me.โ
She scrambles up onto her knees. โWhat are you saying?โ
I lick my lips as she stares me down. There are many promises I could make right thenโbut donโt. Iโm an asshole on even days and a bastard on odd ones. She makes me want to hunt down every dick that ever looked at her wrong and give her the best fuck of her young life at the same time.
Iโm not a man who cajoles or plays house. Something about Coralee draws out instincts I forfeited years ago, like justice that doesnโt come without paying with blood. Rivers of it. I turn on the charm instead of frightening her with my dark thoughts.
โCoralee, I bought that shit hoping youโd want a place to stay. With me. Iโm tired of hiding, arenโt you? I isolated myself, but meeting you made me realize itโs not enough. Not anymore. So who is he? If you donโt tell me, Iโll find out either tonight or tomorrow.โ I warn with conviction.
โWho are you?โ She questions bright eyes probing mine as if Iโm trying to trick her.
โDepends on who you ask, but my home can be your haven, Coralee. Pleaseโฆ If youโre willing to trust someone, Iโll try not to disappoint you.โ I firmly lay it out, staring her down, daring her to detect a lie.
With a shake of her head, she breaks eye contact, looking pensive. I let her stew on our talk, opening the cooler to set out the sandwiches I made. I lost my appetite after such a screwed-up conversation.
Who would give a kid away? What kind of piece of shit would do that to a seventeen-year-old girl? The bigger problem is the person chasing her. Forcing answers from Coralee wonโt work because sheโs skittish as hell, but how else am I going to keep her safe if she doesnโt confide in me?
โHe put a tracker in me,โ she softly says after a thoughtful silence. โI cut it out myself.โ
โIn your leg?โ
She points over her back. โShoulder. God, that was painful.โ
I hide the anger surging through my veins by snatching a sharp rock off the ground, grinding my palm against the rough surface, and saying, โWhat happened to your ankle?โ
She grabs a sandwich, picking at the cellophane while explaining, โAfter I dug the chip out, the man on watch duty tried to stop me, not knowing I had a kitchen knife. I fell, he took it and stabbed me, but… I freed myself.โ
Smiling at her in understanding, I hope she hears the truth of my words through her inner turmoil. โYouโre strong, sunflower. I thought so the night we met. The question is, do you think youโll survive much longer without help?โ
She peers upward, studying my face for signs of deception. โHelp is a foreign concept. After I accepted my situationโฆ I turned numb. Then one day experienced this deep heat inside. Inside my soul. Like there was a stick of dynamite about to blow me apart if I didnโt change my circumstances. Every day Iโm away from him resets a timer. A detonation button at the ready. If I see him or his men again… I just know I will end him or heโll kill me.โ
Shivers shoot down my spine from the intensity of her declaration. Yes, this girl has a fire under her ass. I itch to hold her, to tell her sheโll never experience that emptiness again, but sheโs not there yet, so I do the next best thing and fulfill my part of the bargain.
โI hurt people,โ I confess in a whisper, โpaid to do it until I couldnโt any longer. It disconnected every facet of my life. I becameโฆ Letโs just say my sudden absence relieved a few assholes. I get what you mean. Deciding if our mortal soul is worth taking a chance on isnโt an easy notion. If we find someone else who understands our pain, why not hold on to them? Youโve seen shit, Coralee, but let me carry some of your burdens.โ
She bites her lip with uncertainty. โYes, I have witnessed evil. Heโll never stop looking for me. Itโs been eight months since I gave him the slip. Why do you care, Jax? Iโve got a lot of baggage.โ
Tired of words, I anchor her face between my large palms. They look comical cupping her pink cheeks, but I kiss her anyway. Her plush lips feel like pillows, and I withhold a groan when she moves them against mine. The anticipation had been worth it. I imagined this all week. When would she lower her guard enough to allow my touch? Where? In front of a waterfall with her pretty eyes filled with tears, Iโll take.
She moans low in her throat, and thatโs my cue to dive greedily into her mouth.
Fuck, she tastes so sweet.
A perfect fit under my wandering hands. I caress her hair with careful movements, sliding the silky strands through my fingers. Sheโs incredibly responsive, leaning forward, another soft moan escaping from her sinful lips.
My blood roars in my ears, eager to learn all about this mysterious woman as I swipe my tongue along her upper lip. I want to crawl inside of her head and plant seeds of love, lust, and eternal life at my side.
Damn, Iโm a goner.
I pull away from Coralee far sooner than my raging hard-on judges a good idea. โThatโs why, Sunflower.โ
She appears dazed, licking her swollen lips. โPoint made.โ
Smirking, I mentally pat myself on the back. โGlad you understand. No more running. Weโll return to the tavern so you can grab your stuff, but from now on you live with me.โ
Coralee drops the fingers she was touching her flushed face with. โSo bossy. What will the locals think?โ
I roll my eyes. โFuck them.โ
She gives me a reserved smile. โRight. Are you always this domineering?โ
I hand her the sandwich she dropped. โYes, but push back. I can handle it.โ She snorts, โEver camp? Want to learn how to live off the land? Iโll even throw in some self-defense lessons. Now, eat up, sunflower.โ
โHow magnanimous. I lasted this long without your humble expertise.โ
โSomehow,โ I nudged her side playfully, โpass me one of those waters, smartass.โ
She giggles, and I grin at her while opening my bottle. Kissing Coralee felt so natural and right. I canโt wait to have her under me, but for now, I will make her safe. First, I need her to trust me and to find out who the asshole chasing her is before I go down that rabbit hole.
โIโll nickname you too,โ she muses, โjust not yet.โ
โNo.โ I smirk at her confused pout. โNot a nickname. Itโs a term of endearment because youโre going to blossom if you stick with me.โ
Coralee blushes beautifully with a frown-squint, then eats like a starving animal.
* Coralee *
I mustโve gone batshit crazy running from Braden all these months. Why else would I let Jaxxen bully me into staying with him? The man is cocksure of everything he utters but tries to soften his orders with that megawatt smile he flashes like he already knows how it disarms my defenses. And it does. Itโs bewildering and thrilling being on the receiving end of his attention. He doesnโt act as if Iโm broken, although itโs obvious Iโm screwed up.
On the drive into town, I decided to go with the flow. To see how long he waits before trying to pull a stunt. He has hot showers and free food up for grabs, and Iโm not above taking advantage of it. Heโll want me in his bed eventually, and Iโll ditch Perla as planned. Just friends, my ass.
Jax followed me upstairs in the tavern, forbidding me to bring the comfy sweaters I collected because he stated they were โfucking god-awfulโ. The guy barely fit through the door, pointing out everything to leave behind, maintaining he purchased new clothes. I ended up with hardly anything, telling myself Iโd donate the rest after work one day.
โPlease stop buying me stuff!โ I plead on the way to his so-called cabin, โI make money at Tomโs. Iโm capable of shopping for my own things.โ
He shoots me a mischievous grin before focusing on the road. Gah, the manโs always tossing smiles my direction, making me extremely warm and fuzzy in places I would rather not be. His dark hair flits about his head in the wind, shiny and touchable. My hands curl into my lap, tempted to run my fingers through his locks as he did mine at the waterfall.
The afternoon had been a magical setting with nightmare conversations. I revealed nothing after Jax told me he hurt people for a living before moving to Montana. With his size and eyes that seem to peer into my very soul, I donโt doubt it but want to learn more about him. Heโll lead Braden right to Perla if he keeps poking around, so I resolve to tell him everything tonight. Well, not everything, but enough to stop him from looking into Braden. By morning, Iโm confident Iโll be squatting at the bar once more. Jax canโt possibly mean to let me stay once he finds out I will not have sex with him.
โDo you eat steak?โ he asks after petting the dogs when they welcome us.
โIโm all about meat.โ
He grins, making my pulse leap. โPerfect answer, Sunflower.โ
Shyly, I follow him into the house after shedding my worn, muddy shoes. Jax is going to kill me with his good looks. After that ridiculously hot kiss we shared by the waterfall, I kept peeking at his mouth. No one ever made me as aroused as he had while kissing. I can still feel his gentle strokes through my hair.
For such a massive man, heโs smooth on his feet. Quick. He emptied the cooler, stowed it in a large hall closet, then turned to the sink to wash up in the kitchen while I stared like an interloper.
He smiles over his shoulder when I continue standing in the middle of the room. โDo you cook, Coralee? Come here.โ
โYes, Braden made certain I learned how to cook and entertain,โ I say, joining him.
His gray eyes narrow, catching what I purposely let slip, โBraden, huh? Can you make a salad while I do the steaks?โ
I nod, stepping towards the fridge. โDonโt go searching for him, Jax. If I get a whiff heโs sniffing around here, Iโm on the next bus out of here.โ
He leans against the counter smirking, โSounds as if youโre ready to explain who the fuck he is.โ
Jax has such a filthy mouth, but I like it. The protective way he speaks makes me believe opening up to him will be useful in the future. Why? This mountain man is a stranger, but he treats me as an equal. I crave normalcy. Iโve told nobody about my history. Might as well start with him. Two outsiders finding a mutual connection. He said as much during our picnic. He asked me to hold on to him. It was sweet.
I pulled out vegetables as he laid out a cutting board and knife for me to use. I remain silent until he retreats to season the meat. This isnโt an easy conversation to have, and Iโm glad I have something to keep me busy while I talk.
โA couple by the name of Winter adopted me when I was five. My foster parents were older, owning a live-work bakery in a neighborhood that gradually declined into corruption. We were okay for several years. They paid protection to the Conry family until Braden decided he would rather have me.โ
Jax stood on the other side of the kitchen behind me, quiet as a mouse. I inhale deeply, trying not to cry at the memory of their betrayal. โSince they were old, having put everything into the business, they agreed. What could they do when threatened with arson and death?โ
โNo comment,โ he growls.
I remember the night I came home…
โCora,โ Mom stopped me in the foyer before I spotted a brand-new luggage set by the stairs.
โWhatโs this for?โ
โYouโre going on a trip.โ Her tired eyes avoided mine. โTake these upstairs and pack a weekโs worth of clothing.โ
Weโd never traveled before. โWhere are we headed?โ I couldnโt control the grin on my face as I hefted the case up. โPlease say Hawaii!โ
โNo dear, just you,โ she sighed, turning away from me. โA man will be here in an hour to collect you. Donโt ask why. This is… a surprise.โ
I shrugged, knowing sheโd explain after I packed. I tended to run my mouth, and she always waited until I finished tasks before approaching me.
But before I found answers, the man who sent for me forced me into a car, shoving the suitcase across my lap, busting my lip, and spraying blood on the pristine bags.
I chop the lettuce as Braden taught me, โMy parents died anyway. Late one night the building caught fire, killing them in their sleep. He said nobody cared that he plucked a homeless orphan off the street, and he saved me by giving me a better life. He never actually confessed to murdering them, but he didnโt have to.โ
โJesus,โ Jax banged the cast-iron skillet onto the stove. โSorry… go on.โ
I reach for a tomato, squeezing the fruit. โBraden kept me locked in his house, with cameras everywhere. At first, someone would follow me, but then when I stopped fighting him, heโd let me do little things like cooking. He loved degrading me in front of his boss, a jerk named Enzo. No one was to touch me, but he tolerated Enzo watching us together for the power play.โ
โSee her flush so prettily for me, Enzo,โ Bradenโs silky voice taunted from behind. โDoesnโt she look so beautiful with my cock in her ass?โ He leaned over my tied-down form, hissing in my ear, โYouโre lucky, Cora. So very lucky.โ
Enzo licked his lips, jerking his small dick from the armchair he regularly occupied. He wasnโt allowed to speak when Braden fucked me, but his sinister eyes conveyed all the sick things he wanted to do.
I stare down at my hands, realizing I demolished the tomato in my fist. My stomach turns, recalling the way Bradenโs wet mouth would send me off into the most electrifying orgasms while scolding me for how lucky I was.
โHey,โ Jax leans over until his concerned gray orbs fill my vision. โThatโs enough for now.โ
I flicked the faucet, washing off the mess. โI convinced Braden I adored him. Heโs charismatic, rich, and will not stop until he has me back, Jaxxen. You claimed you used to hurt people.โ I turn to witness his handsome face dark with anger. โBraden does it for fun.โ
โHe wonโt find you. If he does, heโll be sorry, but the bastard will never touch you again.โ Jax sounds so certain, I almost believe him. โWhat I did in the past will enable me to protect you, Coralee. Men like him are a dime a dozen, and Iโm not afraid. Trust me?โ
I sit on a stool with a groan. โI donโt know, Jax. Tall order. People have been let down one too many times.โ
โThat sucks. You arenโt completely distrustful, though. Good ole Tomโs wrapped around your pretty little finger.โ
Truth. โHeโs a sweetheart; he thinks Iโm saving up to visit my grandmother.โ
โIโm sure he doesnโt buy that shit, but whatever,โ he laughs at me, โYouโll find out Iโm a man of my word, Coralee. Iโll prove it to you.โ He winks, and I blush because heโs so charming when he plays.
Shaking my arms to release tension, I concede, โFine. Letโs table all of this depressing talk and have dinner.โ
He claps his big hands together, making me jump. โAgreed. Come back around here and try not to squish another tomato.โ
We settle into a peaceful rhythm in the kitchen as I wrap up the salad while he sears the steaks. We sit at the beautiful oak table, and after I slow down to appreciate the taste of the food, I ask easy questions not to disrupt the pleasantness of the evening.
โHow old are your dogs?โ
โI bought them as pups before I came here. Someday weโll go to Alaska, and theyโll thrive there too.โ He shakes his head in an obvious fondness for them. โThey love it here, though.โ
โAnd you trained them?โ
He nods, finishing his meal. โSome guy I met a long time ago told me how to do it. Get enough to eat?โ
I hold in an embarrassing belch, but my chest burbles anyway, but he only chuckles, โMore than enough. Iโve been living on noodles with boiled water from the coffee pot at Toms.โ
He looks horrified, then places his warm hand on my arm, offering another meaningful smile, โWhatโs mine is yours. Iโm going to fatten you up, sunflower.โ
โThank you,โ I whisper, pulling away.
Heโs already filling my heart with hope, and it wonโt end well.
* Jaxxen *
I tried to keep the conversation light with Coralee throughout dinner and afterward while we cleaned the kitchen. She insisted on loading the dishwasher, and I wiped down the counters. We maneuvered around each other like weโd been living together for months instead of a few hours.
The entire time I fume over the information she gave concerning that Braden asshole. Coralee spoke about him in a ghostly, detached voice as she stood there murdering a tomato. I bet the fucking city mobster loser kidnapped her and, without permission, made the fire seem like an accident. He probably faked her death too. Sheโs right to be scared, but Iโm not.
Coralee shyly turns when I follow her out of the dark kitchen. โSo, my shift at Tomโs starts at five. Iโll have to leave an hour early, hoofing it on foot.โ
I cross my arms. โIโll take you until he replaces you. Do you have to work there?โ
Her hazel eyes widen. โHow else will I earn money? I searched all over town before he took me on.โ
โYou donโt need it,โ Iโm coming on strong, so add with a smile, โI could use help. Work for me.โ
โWhat? Are you serious?โ She scoffs, flipping her long locks over her shoulder.
โAbsolutely. I can list twenty things a day for you to do that donโt involve busting tables for fucking drunks.โ
She giggles at that, then bites her lip. Fuck, I wanted to bite and suck those pillow lips. I step closer, opening my stance. Her eyes rake over my face, her breathing quickening. Oh yeah, sheโs recalling our kiss.
The kiss that sealed her fate.
โItโs getting late. Are you sleepy?โ My tone is low and soothing, so she knows she has a choice.
She inhales deeply, like sheโs smelling me, leaning forward a little. โNot really. I mean, what do you do for fun?โ
Running my tongue over my lower lip to get a reaction, I watch as her pupils dilate. Bingo. Her cheeks turn that pretty shade of pink, which never fails to boost my ego. So responsive is my Sunflower. She puts on a tough girl act, but sheโs so innocent in a lot of ways.
โNow youโre here, I have a few ideas.โ I smirk, โI donโt think youโll find it amusing though.โ
She arranges her small hands on my broad chest, and I blink at the realization sheโs comfortable enough in my presence for random touching. Sheโll create a monster if she keeps it up. โTry me.โ
Holding in a groan, I war with myself. I could take advantage of her openness, but itโs too soon. Coraleeโs a runner, and until I know she wonโt flee, I have to behave. The heat of her little body so close to mine has me hard as hell, but I canโt touch her. She deserves my patience.
The urge to spread those long legs around my waist while nailing her to the wall with my cock is strong, but I shake it off, bringing her hands up to my lips, kissing the pulse points on her wrists.
The fierce thrumming below her soft skin drives me crazy.
Her thick eyelashes lower, and Coralee steps closer, shy yet oh so seductive. My cock stiffens the longer I stare at her.
Does she have any idea what she does to me? Damn, time to put on the brakes.
โUsually I play with the dogs before dark.โ I say, before pecking her forehead with a lightness she sighs at, โCome on, let me show you how I feed them. This will be one of your jobs.โ
I almost smirked at the red flush that zoomed from her chest to her adorable cheeks when I walked away. Maybe she realizes we need to slow down too, pretending I didnโt trick her by keeping silent.
She helps me fill the bowls for the huskies, then plays with them for a while.
The night air turns brisk, but I sit on the deck watching her instead of seeking warmth. Ren and Stimpy revel in her attention. Coralee exclaims she loves all animals, and I tell her I do too, another thing we have in common.
I really donโt, I hate cats, but Iโm trying to hook this girl into staying with me.
โBedtime?โ I suggest a while later when she rests sleepily in a chair by the table at the far end of the porch, โI expect breakfast at seven.โ
She rolls her eyes, heading for the stairs. โOkay, Mr. Bossy-Pants, you win. Iโll tell Tom tomorrow Iโm now a live-in maid for the recluse of Perla.โ
Funny girl. โThatโs not a good endearment, Sunflower. Try again.โ
I wait until I hear her door shut before entering my office. Iโm glad Coralee isnโt fighting me about sticking close because Iโm going to fucking murder Braden when I locate him.
Chapter 3
* Jaxxen *
The next day, I discover that Coralee can be a stubborn woman when she wants to be, especially when the new wardrobe I ordered for her arrives at my doorstep.
โNo, thanks!โ She refuses to take the gifts to her bedroom. โWhat made you buy all this stuff? You spent too much, Jax!โ
I make a pile near the stairs. โYou realize your shoes are falling apart, right? Itโs a safety issue if you stay here. Plus, you need clothes. Well, donโt you?โ
Coralee glares, but all I see is prideful stubbornness. “Well, I don’t want to trip somewhere dangerous.”
It was cute how she pretended that her eyes hadnโt lit up with glee when I mentioned it was all for her, especially after she joked about my online shopping addiction. I shrug and hold up a box of boots until she lets out a huff, snatching them out of my hands.
โThank you,โ she thinks to say before going outside.
Grinning, I pick the shit up, go into her room, and place everything in her closet. As Iโm coming back, I hear her mumbling something about always attracting alpha men. Sheโs right, but better not clump me with that sick bastard Braden.
Then later Coralee has a problem with me hanging out at the tavern until sheโs off work. With her tight clothing and fiery attitude, thereโs no way Iโm leaving her alone in a barroom full of drunken cowboys looking to score.
Her breasts stretch the red top sheโs wearing, and her ass looks fantastic in dark Leviโs. Men have tracked the sway of her hips since we arrived, and I shake my head at how blind she is to their attention. How did she last a week living on the streets?
โHiya, Jax.โ Nason plops down at the table Iโve been at all night. โDidnโt think Iโd find you here on a Monday.โ
I shuffle a worn deck of cards, pretending Iโm not keeping an eye on Coralee while she chats up two ranch hands her age. โThings change. Howโs the homestead?โ
โGreat.โ His gaze wanders over to Coralee. โWow, she cleans up nice.โ
I clench my jaw.
โHi,โ Coralee saunters over. โNeed anything, boys?โ
I offer a knowing smirk, watching her flush. Shit, if I ever doubt how I affect her, that pink tint on her cheeks says it all. I canโt wait to see how far down the blush goes.
Patience, I remind myself.
โBeer, please.โ Nason grins like the good ole boy he is. โHow are you settling into our little town? If you want a tour, Iโm your man.โ
โShe has one.โ I blurt, cringing inwardly at the possessiveness in my voice. So much for playing it cool.
Nason regards us both with a quick understanding. โOh, well… good. Welcome to Perla.โ
She winks at him, and I fight off my first taste of jealousy. โAre you Jaxโs friend? Iโm working for him.โ
The manโs eyes widened. โI suppose weโre friends.โ
I shrug. โNasonโs solid, Coralee. He keeps to himself and doesnโt talk shit.โ
He chuckles in a self-deprecating way, โWho has time for that when cows need milking?โ
โNice to meet you. Iโll get you those beers.โ She flashes a toothy grin before walking back to the bar.
โYou move fast,โ he bats my arm. โCoraโs working for you?โ
I wish heโd go away.
If her plight is gossiped around town like sheโs a live-in whore, Iโll know who to pummel. โItโs not a big deal. Sheโll manage the house while Iโm out surveying my property. I felt bad she has nowhere to stay except Tomโs attic.โ
He nods, checking my new roommate out again. โThatโs gallant of you. Very white knight.โ
โFuck off.โ
He laughs. โRelax, sheโs not my type.โ
Doubtful. Heโs so lonely Iโm surprised he hasnโt joined that dating site for farmers.
After she delivers his beer, he changes the subject, and all I need to do is listen. Nasonโs a decent guy, but boring as hell. When he left, I saw Coralee in deep conversation with Tom.
Iโm waiting on her after the last call when Tom raps his knuckles on the counter, demanding my attention. โI appreciate how you keep to yourself and are a respectful fella, Jax. That being said, Cora isnโt like most women. Sheโs troubled.โ
โIs that so?โ I respond dryly, standing to leave.
โHope you know what youโre doing.โ
I politely smile out of respect for the old-timer, although where she lays her pretty little head is none of his business. โI offered her a job, Tom. She needs the money, and I enjoy her company.โ
The man scratches his salt-and-pepper beard, eyeing me wearily. โSure. Just promise to send her my way if things change, okay?โ
I nod, receiving his message loud and clear. โWill do. Tell Coralee Iโll be outside.โ
I wonโt sit under his scrutiny, not when he makes me sound like a pervert and outsider. Leaning against my jeep, I blow out an aggravated sigh. This time of night, the townโs so quiet I can hear everything. I can hear the rustling of leaves in the trees and the scuttling of nocturnal animals through the alleys. It soothes my nerves. I love the fresh air and how the stars seem brighter out here in the sticks.
Coralee and Tom hug before he locks the security gate, then she slowly makes her way over to the empty parking lot. I watch the sway of her hips, becoming rock hard. Sheโs oblivious to how affected I am by her mere presence, and I donโt know how to react.
โWhat?โ She grins when I stare at her. โAre you okay?โ
I clear my throat, nodding like an idiot before opening the door for her. Sheโs silent on the drive home. Home. It should feel weird having someone living with me after all these years alone, but when I glance over, catching her relaxed expression in the moonlight, I experience contentment.
โAre you hungry?โ I ask after weโre inside.
She purses her full lips, shrugging, โNot really; besides, itโs late. Whereโs that list, Jax? You couldโve worked on that instead of glaring at customers all night.โ
I stab a hand through my hair, then reach for her without pause, unable to hold out anymore. She doesnโt hesitate to place her palms on my chest as I dip down to taste her lips. Shit, she wants this kiss as much as I do, her pert little tongue darting around mine, pulling me deeper into territory I shouldnโt venture into.
I try to be gentle as I grip her waist, but the warmth seeping through her clothes has me digging in for more. Faster and harder, I kiss and squeeze Coralee until I forget to breathe.
She lets out a whimper, and I immediately release her trembling body. Her hazel eyes peer up with heavy lids while we catch our breath. I hadnโt meant to turn aggressive, but sheโs built for it. Iโve experienced nothing as addicting as Coraleeโs lips on mine.
โSorry,โ I mumble, stepping away from temptation. โYouโre right. Itโs time for bed. Iโll leave a list on the kitchen counter. Goodnight.โ
Before she can open that sinful mouth, dart into my office. I adjust myself before sitting behind the desk. What the hell is wrong with me? I shake my head in frustration, wondering how far I would have gone if not for the fact she isnโt ready for a relationship.
I called Wylan after reading his email asking me to ASAP, โWhatโs up, asshole?โ
โHi to you too, ungrateful dick,โ he mutters. โWe have to meet in person.โ
โNot possible.โ
โItโs important.โ
I sit forward, the worry in his voice raising the fine hair on the back of my neck. โWorse than I thought?โ
โEpic shit-storm prediction thoughts, Jax. I can be there in a few days. Wish I could say more, but nothing is secure.โ
โIs she safe? Do we need to move?โ I demand to know.
โFor now youโre good.โ Thereโs a lull. โShe has a different last name that tells a whole other story than that abusive ex. In fact, you should just let her ghost, man.โ
I glare as if he can see me. โTwo days, Wylan.โ
I hang up, wishing he didnโt live so far away. When I come out into the hallway, the house is quiet. I trot upstairs, checking on Coralee. Her strawberry locks shine in the moonlight as she sleeps curled on her left side, blankets up to her chin.
I go to my room, undress, and fall into bed before remembering that damn list she keeps nagging me for. Knowing Coralee doesnโt want to feel like a burden, I find a pen and paper, making shit up for my Sunflower to keep busy with while I maintain distance until Wylan arrives.
* Coralee *
Jax kissed me again.
I wake up so horny itโs ridiculous. I donโt know why he made out with me before bolting like we did something wrong, but it had been perfect. The passion… his mouth needs to come with a panty-melting warning.
I shower, then pull on black skinny jeans with a warm blue sweater. Jax bought me comfortable clothes to fit my tall frame. Heโs so thoughtful, and I feel guilty about the way Iโd thrown it back in his face. Gah, as usual, heโd simply smiled, not batting an eye. I hope Jax realizes what a dear friend heโs becoming.
After slipping on a pair of fuzzy pink socks, again, so comfy, skip downstairs to make breakfast.
I already figured out heโs a big coffee drinker, so start with that. I wonโt sit and look pretty while he treats me like a pet project. Itโs not my style and itโs insulting. I might live in his house, but Iโm also working at Tomโs, allowing my bankroll to grow while I figure out my next move.
A scrap of paper lies on the smooth countertop, as promised, with a list of duties. I smile as I read the list of tasks, which includes doing my laundry, feeding the huskies, and sweeping the porch. Thatโs it? Well, at least he fulfilled his end of the bargain.
Iโm piling food on two plates when Jax joins me. His attireโs not unusual, but the jeans showcasing his muscular legs should be outlawed because of the amount of drool pooling in my mouth. The long-sleeve Henley his barrel chest protests against makes my cheeks burn.
Someday Iโll get over how enormous he is, but today isnโt the day.
Jax accepts breakfast with a cheerful grin aimed at my heart. A cup of coffee disappears down his throat while I fiddle with my fork. He refills his mug, sitting down with me at the kitchen island counter, saying, โIโm heading out. I forgot to mention I only go grocery shopping every few weeks, but there are two of us now. Write down your favorite foods, and Iโll grab them tomorrow.โ
I watch his lips move while he speaks. He didnโt shave, and dark scruff covers his high cheekbones. My palms twitch, wondering if his facial hair would feel soft or coarse under my fingertips. Gah, Iโm pathetic. โYeah, okay, sounds good. I could create a weekly menu… I mean, if youโre here for meals.โ
He smiles at my subtle line of questioning. โI will be. Donโt worry. I want to do everything with you, Sunflower.โ
I lean forward. โHave you always been this kind towards women on the run?โ
He chuckles, picking up a piece of toast. โNo. Thank you for cooking. Tastes great.โ
Thatโs my cue to stop ogling Jax and eat. He finishes, tells me heโs taking the dogs, and then drives off in the jeep.
Iโm alone for the first time in days, and it feels strange.
Jax is so trusting. I sit on the porch, sipping the last of my coffee after loading the dishwasher. Jax keeps his place clean, and I know he said he prefers the outdoors, but he also takes pride in his home. Thereโs not a speck of dust on any of his beautiful furniture. I noticed right away the uniqueness of the bookcases and tables dotted throughout the cabin; they arenโt run-of-the-mill finds.
I love the peaceful quietness of his land. Jax seems to have everything he could ever need, but I wonder if I can talk him into building a vegetable garden or chicken coops. I always wondered what it would be like to gather fresh produce from a farm every day. Jax claims he spends all his time exploring his property, but maybe now Iโm here, heโll let me make a few changes.
I yank on the new boots he bought me, then walk the perimeter of the house, noting the security lights and cameras. They look high-tech but wonโt stop Braden. I shiver, picturing Braden standing on that lovely porch telling Jax what a useless little whore I am. Eight months have passed, and I still hear the echo of his perverse taunts.
โYouโre a slut, princess. My slut, and no one touches whatโs mine.โ
Determined to forget about Braden, I collect my dirty clothes before searching for the laundry room since Jax hasnโt given me a tour. That man doesnโt seem to care what I do around here, as long as he knows where to find me. I locate it off of the kitchen, and the appliances are top of the line, which takes me several minutes to figure out, but washers are washers.
I uncover the heavy push broom next, taking all my frustration out on the weather-stained deck. Hoping for a distraction and to help Jax, I work up a sweat. Yeah, right, as if cooking and tidying can pay him back for the hundreds heโs forked out buying my clothes. I drop the brush where I found it, then run upstairs to hide in the softest bed Iโve ever slept in.
My mind fills with terrible memories.
โYou donโt deserve to sleep in the same room as me after your selfish behavior. I asked you to serve tequila to my boys, not to give me attitude.”
“I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to upset you!”
Bradenโs warm breath fans the back of my neck as he tugs on my hair, pressing a foot behind my kneecap until I buckle at his feet. โKneel when Iโm speaking to you, bitch. Iโve placed a dog mat on the floor. Thatโs your new bed. Just because I donโt share doesnโt mean youโre better than them. Youโre nothing but a mutt I snatched out of the gutter. Learn your place, slut.โ
“I will!”
“Thank me for a place to sleep, slut.”
“Ok… Thank you for giving me a bed on the floor.”
“Remember, I’m the only one you have, princess. You’re alone except for my care. You are nothing without me.”
I canโt breathe.
What am I going to do?
The cheerful afternoon beckons with chirping birdies for me to lower my guard. I pull the comforter over my head to block out the sunshine.
Iโll never be safe while Bradenโs alive. He repeated that statement to me so many times that I eventually believed it.
A panic attack makes my chest tighten. Iโve endured them for years, but itโs been a while. I roll into the fetal position, drawing shallow breaths into my shrinking lungs.
Iโm so stupid to even consider Jaxโs help. Every time I think Iโm safe, Bradenโs not far behind. What am I still doing here? Itโs not his duty to stand up to Braden. Iโm endangering this charitable man. Why? For showers and a regular sleeping arrangement?
I fling the blanket across the room with determination.
Dashing downstairs, I nearly fall flat on my face because the fuzzy socks have no traction. Wait, my purse! Where is it? I spot my bag hanging from the beautifully handcrafted coat rack resembling a small tree and toss the strap around my collar. As Iโm tugging on my old shoes, I pout at the adorable boots Iโm leaving. Worth it, if it keeps Jax out of danger.
Not caring how isolated Jaxโs cabin is from town, I jog until reaching the worn pavement signaling the end of his driveway. Shoot, I should have scribbled a so-long note. He might freak out after discovering I moved. Damn panic attacks!
Looking up and down the empty road, I pause for a moment to catch my breath. I usually have a plan when I travel, but I have become careless since I first met Jax.
I only have a few hundred dollars left from my job with Tom. It will have to be enough to get me out of Perla. I suppose I can take the bus a few towns over in search of employment.
Iโm such a disorganized mess. Damn that silver-eyed man and his effect on my libido!
I resume a brisk pace toward Perla until I hear a vehicle. Glancing over my shoulder, I see Jaxโs black Jeep speeding down the desolate road. How did he find me so quickly?
I freeze like a deer in the headlights until he comes to a sharp stop a few feet away. His mountain of a body leaps out with ease as he stalks over to me.
โWhat are you doing?โ His intense gray eyes pin me in place, and I flinch at the disappointment in his harsh tone of voice, โWhy are you out here?โ
I expected anger, but Jax raises his arms as if he wants to touch me but is afraid to. He swallows, stabbing a hand through his hair. I slump my shoulders in defeat.
โI panicked,โ I softly admit. โBraden will hurt you if he finds me here, Jax. You might not fear him, but heโs evil. Plus, you ask too many questions.โ
He stabs both of his hands through his dark locks, huffing, โShit, Coralee, you scared the fuck out of me. Donโt you trust me? Did I do something else to make you leave other than dig into your past?โ
โNo!โ I grip his arm, admiring the way his corded muscles flex when he makes a fist. โI mean yes, I think youโre wonderful, and I want to live with you, but heโll ruin your life too. I canโt stand the thought of him coming near you!โ
Jax brings me in for a hug, kissing the crown of my head, โHe wouldnโt get a mile close enough, Sunflower. I left you alone too soon. Come on, letโs go home so we can talk about this.โ
Home. I havenโt had one of those since I was seventeen.
I swallow my anxiety. โOkay. I was… I donโt know what to do anymore, Jax.โ
He tilts my neck upward with a sharp yank of my hair before giving me a soft peck on the lips. Iโm starting to crave Jaxโs kisses. The possessive way he handles my body. His strong arms release me, and the warmth he leaves behind makes my heart ache for more.
He stalks back to the jeep, and I follow quickly.
Jax keeps his eyes on the road, jaw ticking, refusing to look at me while he drives, so I shower Ren and Stimpy with attention until he parks in front of the cabin. He doesnโt wait to see what I will do as he situates the dogs before lumbering indoors. I hesitate on the porch. Jax treats me with respect, yet Iโve seen men like him angry before.
โCoralee,โ Jaxโs rich voice calls out, โIโm not mad.โ Come inside before I change my mind on your surprise.โ
I bite my lip. Surprise? I slip off my shoes and shut the door after entering. He sits on the dark blue sofa sectional in the living room. I slowly sink next to him, wondering if heโll kick me out after my stunt.
He gives me another panty-melting smile, holding up a small box. I frown in refusal, not deserving kindness.
Jax sighs and seems to choose his words carefully. โI wonโt tell you not to worry. โBraden may discover that you are in Montana, Coralee,โ he says as he drops the package between us. โIf a man came after me, Iโd just take him out. Youโve overcome a lot. I understand the need to protect yourself. I get it.โ
Take them out? It’s a bold statement, but at least he acknowledges that I have every reason to despise my former captor. Thatโs what he wasโmy jailer. Iโll never return to how I lived under lock and key with Braden as my sole companion.
I would rather die.
Tears threaten to fall, so I drag my eyes away. Outside the beautiful floor-to-ceiling window is a glorious afternoon, but Iโm frozen inside. โThank you, Jax.โ
โYouโre capable of taking care of yourself. You can do anything.โ He sounds so certain, I nearly preen with pride, except heโs wrong. My past is chasing me, and itโll cost me everything. โI have a friend arriving tomorrow whoโs dependable. Weโre going to figure out why Braden kidnapped you. Do you not trust me? My only goal here is to help you.โ
Oh, he thinks I ran because Iโm scared of him.
Hesitantly, I place my palm on his large bicep. Jax doesnโt react, remaining immobile while my conscience scolds me for acting impetuously. He flexes under my touch, either by accident or because he wasnโt expecting the contact. His skin feels warm and oddly comforting. Weโve kissed before, but this moment seems more intimate.
โYour fingers are ice cold,โ he comments with concern. โAre you alright?โ
โItโs just a side effect from the panic attack,โ I mumble, retracting my hand.
Bolting from the sofa after losing cool points, I try to express my convoluted emotions the best I can. โThose I trusted before wanted something in return. I like you, but my issues run deep. I donโt know what else to say.โ
He squints up at me with a knowing smirk. โIโll earn your trust. You arenโt the only one fighting demons. Now, where were you headed?โ
I groan in embarrassment while he waits patiently for me to get my shit together. Heโs older and more mature about these things. Iโve never had to explain myself because nobody cared. Jax makes me so flustered!
โAs I contemplated a future here, I worried Braden would find me. I tried to keep busy but heard his voice telling me how stupid I am. How he would persuade you into believing Iโm nothing but a whore. He used to do that to random people in public.โ
Jaxโs brows lower over his steel-colored eyes. โDo what?โ
I turn back to the window because I canโt bear to watch his reaction.
โHe loves playing head games. Heโd drag me to restaurants, and no matter if I avoided eye contact with men, eventually heโd pick one out and start a conversation. He would ask if your sister, girlfriend, or wife wear panties when they go out. Iโve told her it isnโt respectable, but then it does make me horny. I mean, look at her.โ With a flick of my tongue over my teeth, my mouth runs away at the memory, โBraden laid out my clothes every morning. Iโd wake up and put on what he chose. They always skirted on the edge of inappropriate, and guys would assume I really was a nympho, and he was a saint for taking charge of my wayward ass, but who even has those types of exchanges?โ
โYou behaved well, Cora,โ Braden groaned as I sucked him off in our bed. โI could smell your arousal when that man said heโd eat your ass if you met him in the bathroom stall. So naughty. If you swallow every drop, Iโll lick your sweet pussy. You want me to, right?โ He brushes my hair aside to meet my watery stare. โRight, Cora? I will reward you for your obedience. Remember that. Youโre lucky I love you.โ
I moaned around his cock, my center wet from his approval. Then his fingers tightened on my larynx, choking me. I kept my jaw relaxed as he stabbed his dick down my throat until he finished. I nearly passed out before he released me with a smug grin, โYouโre tired. Perhaps another time. Also, maybe next time you wonโt act like a fucking zombie when I promise pleasure. Ungrateful little bitch, sleep on the dog bed tonight.โ
Braden pushed me away, rolled over, and fell asleep, knowing I would do what he ordered.
โCoralee,โ Jaxโs deep rasp pulls me back from dark memories. His expression holds no sympathy or anger, only acceptance. โHe picked perverted assholes to demean you. Do you really think Iโd let that sick fuck convince me you are anything but a wonderful person?โ
Gah, heโs so rational. โNo, but Bradenโs a manipulator. I wish I had met you the first time I left him.โ
He sighs heavily, โIโm here now. What did you plan on doing after walking all the way into town?โ
I sit back down, tossing my hands in the air. โNo idea,โ I laugh humorlessly. โI thought if I got away from here, he wouldnโt find out about you. Heโll kill you if he realizes weโre living together.โ
โYou werenโt running from me?โ
I turn on my knees, facing him, and he leans in, meeting my earnest stare. โNo, not at all, Jax. I swear. Youโre so incredibly sweet. Iโve been in this house for only a few days, and itโs surreal how comfortable I am.โ
His calloused fingers graze my cheek. โGood. Donโt leave, Coralee. Stay with me. I want you here.โ
โMe too,โ I confess, scooting closer until the heat of his body mixes with mine. โThank you for your kindness. For hearing me out and not judging me for behaving like a lunatic.โ
He inhales sharply, laying his palm on my leg. โStop it. Iโm glad you escaped his terrible influence. No need to thank me, Sunflower. Everything will be okay.โ
I kiss Jax again and sag with relief when he responds. He wraps a muscular arm around my shoulder, taking control, pulling me onto his lap.
His touch is firm but gentle at the same time.
Jax knows how to kiss as he tilts my hips so my breasts crash against his broad chest. He slides his hand down my back as his warm, wet tongue slowly and thoroughly explores my mouth. Iโm lost in the sensual movement of his lips over mine when he squeezes my right ass cheek before smacking it.
โAh!โ I squealed in surprise, โJax!โ
He chuckles, giving me a sexy smirk. โThatโs enough. I wonโt rush you.โ
I inwardly pout, but he has a point. We have a lot to figure out before becoming intimate. Weโre in a better place, but now Iโm turned on. My emotions are on a roller coaster without brakes today!
โYouโre not,โ I assure him before nipping his bottom lip. โTouch me, Jax.โ
He groans, and it rumbles across my skin, hitting me where I need it most.
Gripping my waist as I caress his hair, his lower half shifts to accommodate my weight. He keeps the sides short, but his mop of dark locks is as soft as I imagined, and I grab a fistful, urging him on.
Again our mouths melt together, and I explore his brawny chest and shoulders with abandon. Heโs hard everywhere, including the hidden package pressed against my upper thigh. When I reach down, he stops me with a tight tug on my wrist.
We regard each other breathlessly.
โYou test my restraint, Coralee,โ he mumbles, and I shiver at the heavy lust in his voice. With one last kiss, he plucks me back onto the cushion as if nothing happened. โHow about we make dinner and then watch a movie?โ
Disappointed, but satisfied, I agree, โLaundry calls.โ I stand on shaky knees, catching him adjusting himself. โIโm sorry I worried you, Jax.โ
โI understand.โ He hands me the box I forgot about. โFor you, my Sunflower.โ
Smiling shyly, I open the gift. A necklace? Heโs given me a sunflower charm the size of my thumb, strung on a thick silver chain. Itโs cute and thoughtful. โWow, youโre so generous. I love it. Thank you.โ
Jax handles the pendant deftly for having such meaty fingers. โKeep it on, so you always have a piece of me with you. Promise?โ
I looked up into his clear gray eyes. โOkay.โ
He is too good to be true, this man.
Chapter 4
* Jaxxen *
I must be out of my mind buying Coralee tight pants and shirts that show off her full figure. Every time I look at her, I want to see what she has on underneath. I wonder if she found the racy lingerie I secreted into her closet. It was an asshole move, but I want her to know I think sheโs sexy and deserves everything.
In the morning we make breakfast side by side and I canโt resist kissing the back of her exposed neck, breathing in her scent, pressed my front against her ass. My lovely girl giggles and turns to kiss me and the bacon burned while we mouth-fucked each other against the sink.
When we ate in comfortable silence, I ruminate about the anger I experienced coming home to find her gone. Iโm glad she was all smiles and laughs after our conversation about her running off but couldnโt accept Coralee wasnโt running from me until she said it to my face. The last thing I need is for her to consider me another asshole like Braden whoโs locking her up.
I hadnโt wanted to give her the sunflower necklace that had a locator in it, especially after hearing how that bastard had embedded one under her skin, but I did it for my peace of mind. Not telling her about it is a dickhead move, but Iโll deal with her anger if she finds out. Iโm not a saint, justifying it as wanting to keep her safe.
I clear my thoughts saying, โWylan will be here tomorrow. Why donโt we go into town and stock up?โ
Coralee looks down fiddling with her fork, โIf thatโs what you want.โ
Apprehension rolls off of her and once again I remind her she has choices, โHey, you donโt have to come. Just write down the things you like to eat. I told you before Coralee, you donโt have to do anything you donโt want to do.โ
She visibly relaxes but still avoids my gaze. Sighing, I gather up the dirty dishes, cleaning up as she writes a list. I canโt wait to find out what Wylan uncovered. I know a little, between what Coralee confessed and a vague report Wylan sent my way. Sheโs in for the shock of her life.
โWe will start your training when I get back,โ I tell her, crossing my arms after pocketing the paper she wrote on.
She blinks in surprise, โTraining?โ
โYes. Have you ever ran before?โ
She smirks, โFor years.โ
Funny girl. I suppose I could have worded that better. โExercise. Itโs important to build up your strength for long periods of endurance. Follow me.โ
Coralee gives me that cute frown-squint, biting her lip. I smirk, taking her lip out with my finger before giving her a light pop on the ass. She giggles, following me outside. I open the door to the detached outbuilding. She takes in the GYM equipment with interest.
โWhile Iโm gone, I want you to do two miles on the treadmill,โ I point at the machine in the corner, โLater this week Iโll show you the path I run on, but this will do for now.โ
Stepping over to the large hanging heavy bag, I point to a pair of wrists strap lifting gloves, โIโll order you your own pair, check them out. Questions?โ
Her hazel eyes flit around the room, โImpressive. No wonder youโre so fit Jax.โ
I nod in agreement, โYou will be too. Catch you later, Sunflower.โ
I donโt glance back to see what Coralee will do as I head into the house. In my bedroom, I lift the floorboard near the dresser, after pinning in the safe code, extract a few hundred bills, then closed it all up again. I only use cash when in public.
When I pass the bedrooms hear Coralee banging around, probably changing. I grin as I start up the Jeep, happy Coralee is so agreeable to bettering herself because I need her strong and self-reliant to keep up. Learning how to steer her in certain directions is a slow process, but Iโm getting there.
The supermarket in Perla is the only one in the thirty miles radius, so selectionโs crap. In the jeep, I scan Coraleeโs request, smirking when I see she wants chocolate. Women. The ladies behind the cash registers flirt with me when I make a rare appearance. I indulged them, in case I ever wanted a warm body, but now completely ignore them.
I stock up on the beer Wylan likes or had liked last time we hung out. Wylan and I hadnโt needed to meet since I moved to Perla. I frown, realizing Iโm excited about the prospect of violence that is inevitably coming my way. I left that life behind because I wanted more, but if I have to put men in the ground to help Coralee wonโt hesitate.
โHello Jax,โ the tall redhead at the resister purrs when I toss items her way, โThatโs a lot of food. Throwing a party?โ
I grunt, turning to the impulse shelf behind me, grabbing a dozen different chocolate bars. I notice the girl giving me an odd look, but impatiently ignore her. After I paid she tried to ask me some silly question about going to the towns annual rodeo, but walk away like Iโve already forgotten she exists. I canโt hold back the grin when she mutters Iโm an asshole, willing to bet she would still fuck me. Girls like her like assholes.
Stopping by the only liquor store, I buy a few bottles of Jack Daniels and pause at the wine section. Coralee isnโt twenty-one but I pick out a bottle of some fruity looking crap. She will hear a lot of bad news in less than a day and may need it.
โHello Jax,โ the old man that owns the store greets me like I come here all the time, โWine? Got yourself a woman, boy?โ
I smile with a shrug, โItโll probably sit for a while. Never can be too prepared, right?โ
When Iโm on the road again, I experience a pinch of regret I canโt tell anyone about Coralee. Itโs like sheโs a dirty secret. I know thatโs how it has to be for now but it stings.
Coraleeโs still out in the GYM when I arrive, so hurry to unload and unpack the grocery before changing into my shorts and shoes then sneak through the door. Shit, sheโs wearing a tight red top and leggings with new running shoes. I grow hard watching her breasts bounce as she runs on the treadmill. I need to order her proper exercise attire.
โNot done yet?โ
Coralee jumped, then let out a squeal as she loses her footing. I spring forward, shutting the machine down, wrapping my arms around her sweaty waist. She giggles, her damp hair falling across my arms. Coralee smells even better like this. I smirk, letting her go before looking down. She ran five miles.
โWhen I said catch you later I didnโt mean literally,โ I deadpan, walking over to the weightlifting set on the opposite side of the room ignoring the need to keep her in my arms, โEver lift?โ
Coralee makes that cute nose scrunched up look, โNo. What about my life made you think I lifted weights?โ
I chuckle, โRight. Come over here and show me how strong you are.โ
I try to stay focused as she sat down on the bench, biting her lip. Shaking my head go to the weight rack coming back with two twenty pound dumbbells, making her take them. She listens as I coach her through the proper technique. Her arms are fairly toned, but after five minutes they shake.
โNice equipment,โ Coralee pants when I take the weights back, โAre you going to teach me to fight?โ
โYes,โ I peak at my watch, โWhy donโt you go shower and Iโll do my workout before dinner?โ
โCanโt I stay?โ
I pull her off of the bench, keeping her hand in mine, โNo. Youโre quite a distraction Sunflower.โ
Coralee licks her lips, which I take as an invitation to kiss. She sighs against my mouth, making me mad with lust. Her body fits so right against mine. I slide one hand down to her firm ass, squeezing a cheek. When Wylan arrives, it wonโt be like this. The thought makes me kiss her warm mouth harder, and she shivers against my chest.
โI like it when you kiss me,โ she admits breathlessly when I lift my head, knowing we have to stop.
I step back, needing distance, โI like kissing you. Go shower.โ
She tosses her long hair back, hazel eyes flashing with a warning, โSo bossy. See you inside Jax.โ
I ignore her comment because I will always be bossy, which I think she kinda likes. I spend a good half hour on the heavy bag with my mind planning the punishment I canโt wait to one day dispense on Braden. Coralee is a wonderful woman, which a douche-bag like Braden doesnโt even deserve to breathe the same air.
I had forgotten how much women found Wylan attractive until Coralee watched him get out of his rental car the next afternoon. Her eyes widen, cheeks flushing that adorable pink. Shit, all I need is for Wylan to see that.
โHey,โ I shake his hand on the porch, โThanks for coming. This is Coralee.โ
Wylanโs blue eyes scan her once, โNice to meet you,โ he holds up luggage.
I jerk my head for him to follow, going to the extra guest room that only has a bed inside. My house hasnโt seen this much company… ever.
I shut the door, โHow long can you stay?โ
Wylan tosses one bag on the bed, keeping the other, โUntil she knows everything. I donโt have a job right now. Coraleeโs a little young for you, Jax.โ
I smirk, โMeaning?โ
โSheโs more my age.โ
I laugh humorlessly, โForemost, Iโm helping her. She trusts me.โ
Wylan doesnโt seem convinced but says, โIf you say so. Have you told her about your past?โ
I shake my head, opening the door, โLetโs get to it.โ
Coraleeโs in the kitchen when we join her. Wylan places his bag on the table, then sorts files. She asks if we want anything to drink, but I take out two beers. I need a buzz to deal with her tears. Coralee is strong. I saw her almost cry a couple of times, but she never did. She turned them into anger or reason instead. Tonight Iโm certain there will be tears, but Iโm here to build her back up.
โSit down Coralee,โ I smile, patting the back of the chair next to Wylan, โWeโre going to go through some things, okay?โ
Her eyes drop to the mug of coffee she holds, nodding. Wylan picks up a photo of a man with blonde hair, blue eyes, sporting a perfect fucking smile.
โIs this Braden?โ his voice gentle when asking.
I rest my hands under my chin, silently observing. Coralee gives a curt nod. I spin the picture my way, seeing it was taken outside a restaurant. Braden sat alone, but his smile seems knowing as if he knew he was being tailed. I quirk an eyebrow at Coralee catching her eyeing me.
โHe doesnโt look like the devil, huh?โ she rasps, sadness etched around her down-turned mouth.
I tilt my head, โThey never do.โ
Wylan shifts in his seat and she frowns his way, โLook, Cora, I found out something that will sound bizarre, but I swear itโs true. The couple who adopted you werenโt truthful. They were your handlers, supposed to care for you until you turned eighteen.โ
Coralee looks completely confused, as am I, but I keep my face a flat calm, โHandlers? What does that mean?โ
Wylan stabs a hand through his short brown hair before picking out another picture. This one is an older man, maybe in his sixties with classic Irish looks. I hope Iโm wrong in where this seemed to be going. With what Coralee had said about paying protection to the Conry family, and Braden kidnapping her, I can see the puzzle pieces locking into place.
โLike it sounds. This is Patrick Conry, head of the family. Your real father.โ
Coralee inhales sharply, โHow do you know?โ
โI just do. Your mom died when you were five, a car accident. Patrick was already married and sent you to live with the Winters, paying them to take care of you until he could marry you off. I mean, thatโs what usually happens to the illegitimate daughters of men like him. The people you thought your parents were paying, probably made sure everything was going well.โ
Coralee stands up, covering her mouth. I straighten, ready to catch her if she falls apart. Her eyes burn with anger once more, taking back the emotions. Fuck if I donโt love and hate how Coralee fights against herself.
She clears her throat, โI need a drink.โ
I jump to my feet, โI bought wine.โ
She laughs, but itโs without mirth, โGet the whiskey.โ
I awkwardly pat her tense shoulder before going into the kitchen to grab a bottle and three glasses. I glance back, seeing Wylan cover Coraleeโs hand when she sits down. He whispers something to her, and my chest tightens.
I bang the glasses down on the table a little harder than necessary sitting down, โIf Patrick is her father, why did Braden snatch her?โ
Wylan flips through a few more photos as I pour drinks. Coralee weakly smiles in thanks before gulping the whole glass down.
I refilled it asking, โEver sneak a drink at Toms?โ
She shakes her head, โNo. Braden let me have drinks before Enzo or his other friends came over. I can hold my liquor.โ
โThis Enzo?โ Wylan shoves a picture of a pock-marked looking thug forward.
โUgly,โ I grunt, then swallow my shot.
โHe is a fucking pig,โ Coralee swears.
I resist the urge to laugh, knowing Coralee will take it the wrong way. Coralee doesnโt swear much, and Iโm surprised. โWhat do you have on him Wylan?โ
โHeโs a Romano, Italian. Second cousin or something. I figure he and Braden burned the Winters, faking Coraleeโs death to gain leverage. What kind, is the mystery. When she ran, Braden didnโt have it anymore. Heโs probably afraid the Conryโs will find out.โ
โSo, my real dad thinks Iโm dead?โ she frowns at the picture of Patrick, โHow did you find all this out? Will Braden come here?โ
Wylan shoots her a big grin, making her flush. Pretty boy. โNo Cora, youโre safe.โ
โNo wonder,โ she snatches the bottle, refilling her glass, โNow I know why he kept telling me I was lucky.โ
Wylan and I exchange confused expressions, so I ask, โWhat do you mean?โ
Coralee flushes again, looking first to Wylan, then me before muttering, โIโm a virgin.โ
My heart skips a beat.
I swallow hard against a suddenly dry mouth.
Sheโs a fucking virgin and mine to protect.
Avenge.
Oh, Braden better be living it up because when I get my hands on his sadist ass heโll never see the light of day again.
Chapter 5
* Coralee *
The last thing I want to confess to two gorgeous men is that Iโm a virgin. I canโt even meet Jaxโs intense gaze, hoping heโll continue to kiss me and not treat me like a broken doll when he hears the rest.
The alcohol hits fast and hard, making the news of how deep Braden deception runs messy in my head. How can I still have a parent out in the world? Does he think about me? Did he even love me?
Patrick Conry is in the mob. I had heard his name a few times around my old neighborhood, but my parents never once talked about him. Iโm stunned by the fact Wylan said they might have had plans to marry me off. Does that kind of thing still happen? Was that why Braden kept me a virgin? He had no problems raping my ass whenever he wanted.
Braden sat on the bed with a strange object in one hand, the other holding a bottle, โI know sometimes I scare you Cora, and for that, I canโt exactly apologize for as we both know I like controlling you. Having said that, I will prepare you to take me anally.โ
I let out a whimper.
He caressed the top of my head, gliding the strange object over the ball gag, โShh… I swear Iโll be gentle. See this?โ he held up the bottle, โItโs lube. Plus, this anal plug is the smallest to start out with. I wonโt fuck your ass tonight. Weโll just leave it in for a while. I bet it will make your sweet little pussy so wet youโll beg me to lick it all up,โ he smirked, now running the plug down my ass, โYou would if you able talk I mean. You look so beautiful tied up like this. Now, dry those tears and maybe Iโll let you come later.โ
I tried to stop the tears, but as he straddled my form, I panicked, yanking on the ties. Face-down position was the worse, never knowing what Braden would do. I couldnโt see, but I felt the cool liquid sliding down my ass-crack. Braden liked my tears even though he constantly told me not to cry.
It hurt. My ass was on fire. He chuckled, kissing my shoulder, pressing the object harder inside of me. I screamed around the ball-gag, choking on my spit. He laughed when I could do nothing but cry and whimper.
โI love you, Cora. My beautiful princess. You make me so damn happy when you submit. Youโre a lucky girl.โ
In and out he plunged me with the butt plug until pleasure built to the point I wriggled like a worm on a hook. The pleasure I always found even when Braden disgusted me. I moaned with his dark, lust filled tone in my ear promising he would always love me.
I never cried after that. Braden always made me want more.
โCoralee,โ Jax deep voice once again brings me out of my stupor, โEr, you told me Braden would let Enzo watch?โ
Didnโt he believe me? My face flushes with embarrassment and the burn of alcohol, โDo I need to say it, Jax?โ
His jaw ticks, โBraden sodomized you?โ
I peer into my empty glass, nodding, โBraden kept my virginity for himself, saying it was for our wedding day. Every day he would remind me how lucky I was, but it always made me confused… considering everything else he did.โ
Wylan snags his beer saying in a soft voice, โIโm sorry that man did that to you Cora. Heโs disappeared by the way. No one has heard anything from him in eight months.โ
I stare at Wylan. Heโs a good-looking man. He doesnโt seem much older than me, but he has to be from the way he handles himself. His striking blue eyes hold mine, โI left eight months ago. He brought me to a new location last time, instead of his house in the city. I wonder if he was hiding then too?โ
โPossibly,โ Wylan frowns in contemplation, โEnzo is going about business like normal, but when I checked his phone records, I saw nothing unusual. How did Braden find you?โ
I shift my chair, avoiding Jaxโs gaze, โBraden loves me. In his own mind, he believed it when I said it back. He would let me go out with a guard a few times a month to a spa. Braden liked me plucked clean, sparing no expense for how I presented myself. After I turned eighteen things changed. He gave me my license back, letting me drive myself, with a guard of course, to where I needed to be.โ
โJust like that?โ Wylanโs tone is wary like Iโm holding something back so I force myself to relive that terrible day.
โNo, I was stupid. One day I ran from the spa while his man was in the bathroom. I wore several expensive pieces of jewelry to pawn for money. I came out of a shop an hour later when I noticed Braden standing outside with a shit-eating grin. The pawn broker refused to help me.โ
โHe already tagged you,โ Jax growls, making me more nervous.
I dislike telling these things about my past but if Wylan and Jax want to help, they need to know how crafty and twisted Braden is. Iโve spent years putting up with his mind games.
โYes,โ I swallow thickly, โHe took me home, stripped me down and made me sit naked in front of his friends all night. I wasnโt even allowed to use the bathroom. I had no idea how he had found me because Iโd taken the bus across the city. Later that night he set up a circle of mirrors making me sit staring at myself until I noticed anything different about my body.โ
โSick fuck,โ Wylan mutters, โYou donโt have to tell me more. Iโll help Jax find Braden and then we can go from there. No one stays hidden forever not even you, honey.โ
I flinch, โNo crap. Thatโs the reason I never stay in one place longer than a few months tops. I should leave within another week as it is.โ
โNo,โ Jax stands up, looking pissed, โWe already discussed this Coralee.โ
Wylan glances at us both in amusement although I find none of this funny, โWhoa man, itโs her life.โ
Jax glares at his friend, then points a thick finger in my direction, โNo more running Coralee.โ
Alcohol burns through my veins when I jump to my feet, pointing back at his frustrated face, โIf Braden is missing then heโs looking for me. Heโs obsessed. Heโll kill you both.โ
Wylan snorts, getting to his feet as well while gathering the folders and pictures into a neat pile, โWeโll go through the rest later. Cora, nobody is getting past me or Jax.โ
I huff and hold on to the edge of the table, โWhat makes you so sure?โ
Jax licks his sexy lips, โIโll show you one thing. Come here.โ
One thing? I only want to see one thing and itโs in his tight jeans. Gah, Iโm drunk! I take a deep breath and pretend I donโt want to rip Jaxโs clothes off. Jax rakes his eyes up and down my body like he senses where my thoughts are at. The ticking of his jaw muscles tells me heโs still pissed.
Even though I can sense Jaxโs anger, itโs not aimed at me. Every time I talk about Braden he gets this murderous look on his handsome face. I follow him to the front area, Wylan trailing behind. Jax takes out his cell phone but also hits the wall beside the coat rack. Iโm surprised when a panel slides back, revealing a complicated computer screen. Suddenly the house shutters and metal slatted plates come down covering every single window in the house. I yelp, making the men chuckle. I slap Jax arm, playfully.
โThe windows are bulletproof,โ he informs me, โThereโs also a panic room in my office.โ
โWow,โ I donโt know what to say, โAre you one of those doomsdays preppers?โ
Jax hits a few buttons on the screen and the house goes back to its original state, โNo. Whoโs hungry?โ
โReally?โ I place my hands on my hips, โWho has a house that turns into a tank unless theyโre planning for war?โ
Jax leans close to my face, and my skin prickles. Every time heโs near me my hormones explode, โI do.โ
I lock eyes with him, fighting a smile, โYou even boss around inanimate objects.โ
Jax barks out a laugh, peering down at me with his insane silver eyes, licking his lips like he wants to kiss me, but Wylanโs laughing at us. He winks instead, walking away. I turn around to see Wylan giving me a contemplative expression.
โWhat?โ I bristle.
He shakes his head, giving me an innocent smile, โNothing, honey.โ
Honey? I ignore Wylan and follow Jax into the kitchen to prepare dinner. Wylan silently observed us as we work to make a meal of baked potato, salad, and ribs I stuck in the oven earlier.
โI almost became drunk,โ I admit when we sit down to eat, โIโm such a lightweight now.โ
โStress amplifies it,โ Jax comments like itโs no big deal.
โHow old are you Wylan?โ I canโt help but ask.
Wylan picks at his salad like itโs alive, โTwenty-four. Your birthday is next month, right?โ
I nod, realizing these men know more about me than I will probably learn about them, โThe big two-one,โ I chew a piece of meat before asking another question, โShould I let my family believe Iโm dead?โ
Jax slams his fork on the plate making me jump, โWhat makes you suspect they already donโt? I keep going back to the fact Braden paraded you around in the same city as the Conryโs. Even if he hadnโt, Braden had people in his house. Men that fucking saw you naked and humiliated.โ
Iโm not hungry anymore, realizing Jax has a very sick point. There were times when the men around Braden would look uncomfortable when he punished me but did nothing. Did they recognize who I was? Did my father not give a crap after my mom and dad died?
Wylanโs not affected by Jaxโs outburst saying, โI speculated at first the point of killing the Winters was to gain leverage. Maybe Paddy sold you.โ
โPaddy?โ I clutch my stomach feeling sick.
โPatrick mostly goes by Paddy,โ Wylan shrugs one shoulder, โTucker City is a mess. I couldnโt hit the streets like I normally would to discover information about you Cora.โ
โWhy not?โ I pick up my water glass hoping to calm my belly.
โNo telling if a word would get back to Braden or Enzo and tail me right to you and Jax. We need a plan.โ
โCoralee,โ Jaxโs deep voice calls, and I take in his concerned expression, โLetโs just enjoy dinner, leave the rest until the morning. Wylan will stick around for a while and together weโll find Braden, okay?โ
His reassuring tone and smile relax the cramping in my chest. I exhale, returning his smile. We finish dinner without talking again.
They never answered my question.
Chapter 6
* Jaxxen *
โYou werenโt lying then when you said you are just helping Cora? She needs all the help she can get with a family like hers. I admit Cora is pretty fucking hot though. โ
I want to punch Wylan in his smug mouth, but pick up my gloves instead, โItโs not like that. When I saw Coralee, I felt something.โ
“Awe,โ Wylan tugged at his tank top, rounding the heavy bag, โAre you in love Jax?โ
I grit my teeth, pulling the gloves on, โMaybe.โ
Wylan pauses, โOkay, this is new. I knew living out here with no pussy would be dangerous to your health.โ
I feint a punch towards his head, โYouโre full of piss this morning.โ
He laughs, stepping back, โSleeping in the same house with a virgin will do that to any man.โ
I slap my palm against his face with more force than I meant to, making him scowl, โShow a little tack man. Coralee is a good woman asshole.โ
He looks contrite but his eyes are still full of mischief, โSorry Jax. Yeah, she is. Actually, Iโve never seen you smile so much as when sheโs in the same room. Itโs like I donโt even recognize Killer White.โ
I smirk at my old nickname, โThatโs because I left that life behind. I had my quiet time, now I want Coralee.โ
โAnd everyone better get out of the way of what you want,โ he rolls his eyes, going back to the bag, โI wonder though, why do you suppose Braden didnโt fuck Cora? Man, Iโm surprised sheโs as stable as she appears after going through that shit. She didnโt even cry.โ
I sigh heavily, having thought about the same issue all night long while laying in bed, recalling the time Coralee tried to grab my cock like she knows what to do. Iโm sure she does after being used as a party favor by Braden, but losing your virginity to an asshole like me isnโt something she should want. The secrets she hides made me nearly to go to her room to demand answers.
Sheโs hiding something but the thought of Coralee crying without my dumb ass comforting her makes my fist tighten. I noticed how she had a hard time meeting my eyes after admitting sheโs still a virgin which is nothing to be embarrassed about. Sheโs so young and yet when we talk and laugh I donโt see a twenty-year-old. I look at a beautiful woman with potential and a heart so big it squeezes mine.
โWell?โ Wylan tilts his head.
I clear my throat and thoughts of Coraleeโs intact virginity, โIโll be sure to thank him when I catch up.โ
He hoots, โCocky much? How serious have you guys become in the space of two weeks? Maybe I should show her a little-โ
โDonโt,โ I growl, โWhat the fuck is wrong with you? Let it go. Sheโll have breakfast ready soon.โ
Wylan holds up his hands with a playful wink, โJust busting your balls fucker. Sheโs too tall. I like my women tiny so I can put them in my pocket.โ
I huff out a chuckle, relaxing. Wylanโs a crazy kid. I met him a few years back when he tried to hack into my bank account, hiring him after he simply laughed after I knocked his ass out. Wylan has crazy skills, and we became good friends before I left my old life behind.
โI noticed the necklace,โ Wylan says a while later before we enter the house, a serious gaze replacing the playfulness thatโs usually there, โDoes she know?โ
I shrug feeling the weight of my sneaky actions between my shoulder blades, โSheโs a runner. People are looking for her.โ
โJax,โ he exhales, โBe careful. Sheโs already escaped once from a psycho.โ
I bristle turning to glare at his cocky sneer, โThe fuck you mean?โ
He nods towards the house unaffected by my anger, โCoraโs not stupid. She may like youโre brooding ass for now, but I know how you can be. If you try to control her, sheโll run.โ
I ignore him, heading into the house. Wylan has no clue about Coralee. She needs me. I have never been so certain about anything or anyone in my life. Glimpsing her long strawberry-blonde hair when I go up the stairs, a pang of worry clenches my guts. Wylanโs right, I canโt keep her if she doesnโt want to stay. Itโs all too soon to worry about, I tell myself, sheโs here now and itโs good enough.
When I return downstairs after showering, I hear Wylan and Coralee laughing at the kitchen table. She beams a smile my way and I canโt resist dipping down to smack my lips on hers. Coraleeโs cheeks flush then she ducks her head like I wonโt kiss the shit outta those sweet lips again. This is the first time Iโve kissed her in front of Wylan and I donโt miss the way his eyes narrow.
โBreakfast is on the counter,โ she mutters, eyes roaming over my body.
I wink because it makes her turn a deeper shade of pink, โThanks.โ
Wylan sighs, clutching his chest like an idiot, โDomestic fucking bliss.โ
I shoot him the finger then collected my food. Coralee is a great cook Iโm finding out. Too bad that dick-hole Braden had been the one to teach her. Iโm puzzled by a lot of things he did with Coralee. The man is a piece of work.
โWhatโs on the agenda today?โ Coralee asks when I sit down.
โWhat would you like to do?โ I want to call her Sunflower but refrain around Wylan. I donโt need more teasing from that asshole.
โCan you teach me how to throw knives?โ
I nearly choked on my eggs, โUm… you want to learn knife throwing?โ
She grins nodding excitedly, โI want to use Bradenโs picture for practice.โ
Wylan smacks the table in mock shock and I laugh at her creativity.
He smirks, leaning close to her face, โIโll hang up Enzo picture too, honey.โ
I glare briefly at his affectionate tone, then focus on my girl, โSure thing. I own a set. You can practice in the field out back.โ
Coralee grins so big I wish I had a camera. Sheโs truly beautiful. I look at my plate so I donโt stare, finishing breakfast since they already ate. Wylan runs upstairs to get the pictures while Coralee cleans the kitchen.
Not one to miss a chance with Coralee, I push her against the counter, wrapping my arms around her waist, โYou have to promise me youโll use your knife-wielding skills for good, Sunflower.โ
She quirks her lips up at that, โIโm honestly surprised you have throwing knives. Iโll ask again, who are you, Jax?โ
I plant my lips on hers instead of answering. She melts against me like warm butter as I run my mouth down her slender neck, inhaling her sugary scent. My hands move down to cup her perfect ass and she wriggles against my body and the counter letting out a little moan that makes my dick jerk. I will never tire of how Coralee affects me. I donโt deserve someone as sweet as her in my life, but I will hold her for as long as she lets me.
โAre you okay?โ I question, gazing into her multicolored eyes, noting the blue stands out more than the green today since sheโs wearing a navy pullover, โYou can lean on me.โ
โIโm not broken,โ she rasps, clutching my biceps hard enough I feel her nails dig in and my cock likes it, growing painfully hard, โDonโt treat me like I am.โ
โNever,โ I growl, โDonโt misunderstand my intentions. Do I need to repeat myself? Youโre strong and I fucking love how you protect yourself, but Iโm here. Iโm not going anywhere and neither are you.โ
โJax…โ she starts to protest so I slam my mouth down on hers so she canโt deny how we fit together.
โIs this how dishes are done out here in Montana?โ Wylan drawls.
I let go of Coralee after one last lingering kiss that makes her whimper, โIn my house, yes.โ
The morning is the most interesting one Iโve had in years. After pinning a line of pictures to the spare plywood boards I dug out of the scrap shed, taught Coralee how to turn her wrist too properly flick the blade. Wylan showed off, of course, hitting one of Braden pictures continually into his forehead. Coralee liked that, clapping, making me laugh at her morbid encouragement.
By the time lunchtime rolls around, her stances good and sticks the knife a few times. She never once became frustrated, impressing me. Iโve never worked weapons with a woman before, and expected her to at least stomp her feet or pout once, but not Coralee. She had patience and allowed me to help when I pointed out mistakes. I felt in those hours even more certain sheโs the one for me.
โNot bad,โ Wylan nods in approval when she nails the picture of Enzo at last, โIโm starved.โ
โThis was so much fun! I can make turkey sandwiches,โ Coralee places the knives back into the leather sheath, โGive me ten minutes.โ
โThanks, honey.โ
I grit my teeth confused to why Wylan insists on calling her โฒhoneyโ. Heโs never resorted to pet names in the past. I tell myself to calm down, throwing once more to nail Braden between his eyes.
โSheโs not here to wait on you,โ I snap at Wylan before gathering the knives and returning them to my safe in the GYM. I have safes all over the property in case I need a weapon.
In the house I check my phone, seeing a voice mail. Wylan and Coralee sit down to eat as I listen to old Mrs. Pills explain I have packages that arrived at the post office instead of my house. It happens now and then. While I eat, I tell the two Iโm popping into town, certain the packages are Coraleeโs new workout clothes. I canโt wait to see her in tight gear.
โIโll keep her company,โ Wylan winks at Coralee.
She rolls her eyes, making me smirk, โYouโre a helpless flirt Wylan. How about you keep Ren and Stimpy company while I figure out what weโll have for dinner?โ
He pouts, โCold Cora.โ
โThatโs me, Icy Cora at your service,โ she returns with a flip of her long hair.
โIโm told youโre not here to service me,โ he drawls with an obvious innuendo causing Coralee to flush up to her ears.
Chuckling I stand up to leave but not without giving him a warning look, โBehave Wylan.โ
Coralee follows me out to the jeep while the dogs jump on my legs hoping for a ride. I cave, ushering them inside the vehicle. She places a chaste kiss on my lips, and I pat her ass because my hands are drawn to her juicy globes every time she touches me.
โLetโs grill tonight,โ I suddenly crave steak, โIโll grab a new propane tank in town.โ
Her smile is soft and so is her sweet voice, โSounds perfect.โ
I wink, starting the Jeep, โSure does.โ
Anything that includes that girl smiling at me like that is perfect. Iโm turning into a damn sap, but hell if I care.
Chapter 7
* Coralee *
Thereโs something about Jaxxen and Wylan I canโt put my finger on. I observed them all morning, concluding they are dangerous men. The way Jax casually and repeatedly tells me heโs not afraid of anyone makes me wonder if I let Jax bully me into his life.
When Jax peers into my eyes and speaks itโs as if he sees into my heart and donโt get me started on how he kisses and touches my body as if heโs been doing it forever. He demolishes any thoughts of leaving and it will cost me in the end because I canโt afford to settle down and play house.
I fell asleep the night before fretting over the way Jax smirked when the metal shutters barred the house like heโs in constant danger. Maybe Braden isnโt the only one I should fear.
Then thereโs Wylan, who flirts and shoots me odd looks as if heโs trying to figure me out. He gathered information about my entire life in less than a week, a little creepy considering I donโt even know the guy. After Jax took off to Perla, I realize Wylan doesnโt care one way or the other if I catch his blue-eyed stare.
Wylan smirks, joining me on the porch after the dust from Jax jeep settles, โWanna get high, honey?โ
I stare as he produces a joint from a small tin. He lights up, inhaling before taking a seat at the small table at the other end of the porch. As I continue to fix him with an unimpressed gaze, he pulls a gun out from behind his back and sets it on the table.
Guns donโt scare me, itโs the people behind the trigger that do. I made Braden consent to never bring one in the house. It was the only time he listened. He probably worried Iโd shoot him and back then I might have.
It crosses my mind to go to my room or take a walk until Jax returns but this as an opportunity to get answers while heโs away. Wylan doesnโt act as secretive or against my need to flee from Braden. The night before he agreed itโs my life and my decision to leave.
I sit beside him at the deck table asking, โHow long have you known Jax?โ
Wylan offers me the blunt, but I shake my head no, โFew years. Whatโs going on in that pretty little head of yours Cora?โ
Biting my lip, I try to not ogle the handsome man in front of me. Wylanโs blatant sky-blue eyes and smirking mouth could crack any female resistance. Not that I figure many reject his obvious charms. I think if Jax could have peed on me when Wylan showed up, he wouldโve. Jax scowls every time Wylan flirts with me, but the man doesnโt seem to take anything seriously.
โWas Jax in the military or something making him move out here and turn his house into a transformer?โ
Wylan huffs out a chuckle, โNo. Hasnโt Jax told you anything about himself? What have you two been doing out here if not… talking?โ
Rolling my eyes at his obvious innuendo wave towards the woods, โJax spends his time out there. We talk, but itโs mostly what we like or dislike or my past. Iโve asked, but he changes the subject.โ
โYou think you can get information out of me?โ he scoffs, โYouโre pretty, but Iโm not risking Jaxโs wrath.โ he shoots me a cocky grin, stabbing a hand through his shiny brown hair.
I look to the trees, โI just wonder whatโs in it for Jax. Helping me, I mean. Whatโs in it for you?โ
โCora, youโre a smart girl. Shit, I applaud you getting this far away from that sick asshole Braden, but men like Jax donโt go around rescuing damsels in distress without a motive.โ
My face grows hot and I narrow my eyes at Wylan. How dare he suggest Jax has insidious plans when heโs been nothing but kind? He inhales another hit, blowing the cloying smoke right into my face. I donโt blink, hating Wylan for making me feel used. Jax still kisses me, but after finding out Iโm still a virgin, thereโs hasnโt been time to talk.
โShould I leave?โ I ask, unable to hide the hurt in my voice.
Wylan exhales, stubbing the blunt out before meeting my gaze with a smirk thatโs a little to leering, โYou tried that once, right? How did that turn out? No, meeting you changed my mind. I donโt want you to leave.โ
โI suggested letting my father know Iโm alive. Maybe Paddy could protect me and Jaxโs life can go back to normal.โ
Wylan leans forward, hands between his knees, โWhat makes you assume heโll protect you? They arenโt good people Coralee. Your father gave you to an old couple so he could come back later and do whatever it was he planned.โ
โYou think he was coming back?โ
โWhy pay the Winters for seventeen years if he wasnโt?โ
I shrug, looking away from his bright blues, โIโve been alone for so long…โ
Wylan places a hand on my knee, rubbing his thumb over the denim, โI know, honey. Stay here with Jax and you wonโt be. Or, leave and take your chances like you have been.โ his touch aims higher, so I catch his wrist with a sneer, โHmm… shy Cora?โ
I clench his wrist hard, โDo you have any shame?โ
He smirks yanking out of my hold, โNope. Life is too short. Plus, I canโt resist a virgin.โ
What a jerk! I stand up to tell him off when we both hear a vehicle approach. I notice right away itโs not the Jeep from the slow tire roll. Wylan snatches the gun and grabs my arm at the same time. He shoved me towards the door, barking for me to get inside the cabin.
My heartโs in my mouth realizing I have no clue how to access the safety features of Jaxโs home. I stumble into the house but stall when a red Toyota RAV4 comes to a stop and a woman steps out.
Bria.
The curvy, bleached blonde with painted red lips holding a plastic container stops cold when she catches sight of Wylanโs large body taking up space on the top porch step. Bria licks her ridiculously glossy lips as if she tastes Wylan from where she stands. A weird pang of jealousy hit me in the chest. Sheโs obviously here for Jax.
โAfternoon,โ Wylan drawls when Bria continues to gawk, โWhat can I do for you?โ
She clears her throat, then steps up in her expensive skirt and heels with a flirty smile, โHello! Since Jaxโs jeep isnโt here I assume heโs not home?โ
โThatโs right.โ
โIโm Bria,โ she extends a manicured hand, gold bracelets tinkling.
Wylan tips his head, shaking it once, โPeter. Iโll tell him you stopped by Bria.โ
She flushes, looking past Wylan to spot me. I didnโt bother to go inside once I realized a woman and not an enemy stood in the driveway. Although, from the way her eyes narrow in on me, maybe Iโm being too hasty.
โCora, right?โ Briaโs tone is noticeably icy.
Wylan turns giving me a warning look to keep my mouth shut. How weird is it I already know his mannerisms? I should go inside, but curiosity takes over my judgment since Jax isnโt around to keep me out of his business. Jax has every right to a personal life separate from our situation, but I remind myself he keeps insisting I trust him and I need to learn more before doing so.
I step onto the porch with a false smile, โHello. How are you?โ
Bria flashes Wylan a coy gaze under thick eyelashes ignoring me, โI brought my famous brownies for Jax. The fair and rodeo is next weekend, and Iโm in the bake-off. He just loves my baking and thought Iโd pop in for a visit.โ
Iโm sure she wants to do more than share her brownies from the way sheโs dressed and keeps licking those blood-red lips at Wylan. I may have been a tad sheltered growing up, but after living with Braden and seeing every type of depravity men can fashion up for women, know she came over to fuck.
โThatโs so sweet,โ I bump Wylanโs hip with mine, โRight, Peter?โ
Wylan grins at the blonde, thrusting his hand out, โIโll make sure he knows you stopped by Bria. Cora and I are about to shower.โ
My cheeks flame and Briaโs eyes pop, โOh… I tried to call but… thank you, Peter. You should both come to the fair next Saturday.โ
Wylan keeps the smug grin fixed on his face, taking the container from Bria before he throws an arm around my shoulders, โWeโll sleep on it. Have a nice day.โ
Clearly not used to being dismissed, let alone by a good-looking guy such as Wylan, she turned her flustered look to one of indifference, โYou too,โ her eyes roam over my outfit, โSee you around Cora.โ
I grimace when Wylan pulls me tighter against his hard frame. Gah, the way his fingers caress my upper arm does funny things to my body, โYeah.โ
As soon as Bria is out of slight I sling his arm off, โSeriously? A shower? Weโll Sleep on it?โ
He cackles, leaning into my enraged face, โCould happen,โ he dodges the swipe I aim at his chest, โNow I understand why Jax sticks around this Podunk town with an ass like that bringing him fucking baked goods. Her lips are made for sucking dick.โ
I growl, letting my jealousy show as I stomp back into the house, slamming the door in his face and turning the lock.
โAwe, come on Cora! Iโm sure she knows Jax doesnโt want her brownies anymore! Open the door! Cora? Dammit!โ
Giggling as he bangs on the door, run upstairs. I could do with a break from the hotness of Wylan and Jax. Too much testosterone is making my lady parts crazy. Plus, I need to rethink Jaxโs motivation for supporting me. He doesnโt work so where does the money come from?
I spent the rest of the afternoon organizing the clothes Jax bought me, having a good chuckle over the unopened box of Victoria Secret lingerie wondering how he knows my size. Men like to dream I suppose. An uncomfortable thought crossed my mind maybe Jax sees me as a conquest instead of a friend.
I curl up in the bed when the sunโs setting, skipping out on dinner but donโt care. All Iโve done lately is cook and clean. I had enough of that living with Braden. Although I told Jax I wish to be useful, need space tonight.
I crave information about Jaxโs past but Wylan befuddled my good-guy view of the man who took me out of living above a bar then clothed and fed me asking for nothing in return. Wylan insinuated Jax expects something from me, and itโs not my housekeeping skills.
The box of lingerie I buried in the closet boils my blood.
Iโm a virgin and they know, much to my mortification, along with how I lived.
My attraction to Jax is not just physical. When he caught me on the road after running I recognized the hurt in his eyes. The need for comfort. Heโs as alone as I am. Jax truly wants to help, I know he does. Heโs a bossy jerk sometimes, but his kindness shows everywhere I look.
I fell asleep then a while later the bed dipped and warm fingers brush across my cheek. The first person I normally assume to catch me unaware is Braden, coming to drag me back. Itโs not him I smell, but the earthy masculine scent of the mountain man thatโs burying himself in my heart and soul.
Opening my eyes, the low moonlight shining through window allows me to see Jaxโs huge form, head propped up on one large forearm. I roll over, so weโre eye to eye. His body is so massive, I sometimes imagine heโd have been a formidable Viking in another life.
โDo you believe in reincarnation?โ I whisper.
In the dim light, I see his eyebrows quirk up, โNo.โ
โWhat do you believe in Jax?โ
His warm hand brushes the hair away from my face and I resist the urge to nuzzle into it, โFor a long time I only accepted power and money worthy of my time. Figuring if I had both, there was nothing else I needed besides the control and fear that came along with it.โ
Confused I ask, โPower, money, and fear is what you believe in?โ
He runs a callused thumb across my cheek and I shiver under the tender touch, โNot anymore. What do you believe in, Sunflower?โ he whispers near my mouth.
I melt into the mattress when he continues to caress my face as if heโs memorizing my features, โ Well, I used to go to church with my mom and dad presuming if I prayed hard enough… but now I donโt know if God ever heard me. It must have been the devil listening instead.โ
His hand explores my body languidly, โWhy do you say that when you look like an angel?โ
Such a charmer.
I sigh when he rests a heated palm on my hip, โI only had one good girlfriend growing up. My friends called me a cock-tease because the boys at our school liked me, but I didnโt do much besides kissing or go to movies. My mom and dad didnโt notice because I wasnโt allowed to date. I was secretive, but the girls werenโt kind. Sometimes when I was with Braden, I wondered if trying to get boys attention caused everything.โ
He kisses my lips murmuring, โThey were jealous,โ he leans back with a smirk twisting his sinful mouth, โSpeaking of…โ
I groan and try to push him away but of course, he doesnโt budge, โBria. How are her famous brownies?โ
Jax grabs my ass, heightening my arousal, โDelicious. I saved you one.โ
I shoot him a glare he probably canโt make out knowing Iโd rather toss it into the trash than eat anything that woman made. Jax keeps smirking, leaning closer before slipping a hand between my legs, fingers pressing against my center. I inhale his manly scent, becoming instantly soaking wet. Jax attacks my mouth, lips and tongue so hot I wonder if he can burn me. I kiss him back just as fiercely, moaning when he cups my pussy. Heโs so big I wondered what his cock looks like.
โDo you always wear jeans in bed?โ he growls against my wet lips, pressing his erection against my stomach.
I push his chest once more, creating space although my body aches for more. It would be easy to lay here in the dark, pawing this gorgeous man, but we need to talk before things go too far. โWhat time is it?โ
He nuzzles my neck, making me shiver and writhe against his impossibly hard chest, โAfter eight. I wanted to see if youโre hungry.โ
I smile into his soft hair but this has to stop before I rip off my clothes because Jax lights my core up like the fourth of July, โThank you. Iโll come downstairs in a few minutes.โ
He lifts his head at my dull tone, โBria isnโt in my life. I didnโt know sheโd come here.โ
I sit up facing away from his confused expression. Gah, why canโt I be a normal woman? โI found the lingerie and donโt want it. You donโt have to explain about Bria, Jax. Weโre basically strangers and we each have our own lives. Unless thereโs something you want to tell me?โ
He springs off of the bed quite gracefully for a man his size, โI bought them because you deserve to feel special but yeah, I can tell you took it the wrong way. Iโm sorry. Iโll see you downstairs.โ
Shut downโagain.
I roll my eyes going into the bathroom to wash my face. Things have to slow down until he tells me about his life. I could fall in love with Jax if Iโm not careful. Every time his rough hands touch my skin I want more. So much more than someone like me deserves. Jax doesnโt know the first thing about what I deserve. If only I wasnโt such a coward, and heโd answer my damn questions perhaps weโd be sleeping together! Just imaging Jaxโs body naked sends a thrill through mine. If I can tell him about my sordid past, so can he.
โHave a nice nap?โ Wylan snips when I enter the dining area. There are four empty beer bottles and a deck of cards in front of him. The speakers in the walls play a song by Arcade Fire and itโs the first time I notice the hidden system. โDirty pool locking me out Cora. Iโll get you back for that one.โ
I shrug, sitting on the other side of the table. โBring it.โ
Jax joins us, picking up the deck and shuffles them like a seasoned pro. He doesnโt look at me when dealing the cards and itโs extremely awkward. Iโm always so relaxed around Jax, the uncomfortable sensation makes me retreat to the kitchen. Wylan says something I canโt make out and Jax grunts. Was I too ungrateful throwing his generosity in his face? Why did I jump to conclusions? Jaxโs been nothing but a gentleman except for pawing my covered body like a caveman. Damn Wylan for getting in my head.
The kitchen is clean as if they hadnโt eaten or cleaned up already. I rummage the fridge, taking out a yogurt and move into the den, switching on the TV. I eat fast because the men behind me are unnaturally quiet. After throwing away the trash I head outside to play with Ren and Stimpy.
โGood boy,โ I coo when Stimpy brings me a stick to throw.
Ren and Stimpy are so playful that time passes and I find myself apart from the driveway and in the woods with the dogs running around as if they want me to run with them. I spin to pick up another stick and scream.
Wylan grins like a villain in a bad horror film, standing a mere five feet away.
โJumpy?โ he snickers in amusement. โGotcha.โ
I scowl and return my attention to Ren, whoโs rubbing against my legs in an attempt to move me further into the darkness, โWhat are you doing creeping up on me?โ
โWe couldnโt see you from the house and I needed a smoke,โ Wylan waves a lit joint in front of my face, โYou shouldnโt stray when you donโt know your way.โ
โYou rhymed,โ I toss a stick watching both dogs take off.
โYou want some, honey?โ Wylan holds the fat joint inches from my mouth.
I purse my lips, โI donโt do drugs.โ
“Ever?โ
The automatic lights behind us hide Wylanโs eyes so I canโt make out his astonished expression but I hear it in his tone, โItโs complicated. I get weird when I smoke pot.โ
He tilts his head, โHow weird?โ
โForget about it,โ I mutter walking back to the house.
โDid Bria upset you so much you felt the need to hide in your room all day? Lock me out for saying she has cock sucking lips?โ Wylan falls into step beside me, โI reminded Jax youโre still a kid who sees him as a hero instead of the fuck off he is.โ
I canโt help but flush, โThatโs complete bullshit!โ
โBullshit?โ Wylan chuckles in my ear, โShe curses. Do it again.โ
I shove his shoulder with as much force as I can muster. Heโs not expecting it, staggering back a few feet still laughing like heโs the funniest person alive for pushing my buttons. Does Wylan think Iโm a prissy teenager? Well, I didnโt exactly act like a grown-up when I locked him out of the house.
โI couldnโt care less who Jax sleeps with because itโs not my business,โ I retort, โI donโt have to explain myself to you Wylan.โ
โYouโre right,โ he smirks in an irritating way thatโs sexy yet condescending, โI doubt youโd understand anyhow, being a virgin.โ
โReally? Go away Wylan!โ I think I might hit him.
Stepping up on the porch he pauses, โWe should go to that fair Bria mentioned. I mean… it sounds fun. Wanna go with me?โ
I open and close my mouth shocked because heโs suddenly turned venerable and soft-spoken. What? Is he asking me out? No… he canโt be. I give him a suspicious look to which he widens his eyes, โDid I say, me? I meant us. Bria and Jax and maybe the dogs.โ
Wylan is such a little shit! โYou better find a comfortable place to sleep outside!โ
Jax storms out of the house, โI should kick your ass Wylan. Come on, Coralee, letโs round up the dogs.โ
I place my fingers in my mouth and whistle. Both dogs bound in sight, โHere they are. Iโm going to bed. Good night, boys.โ
Wylan chuckles, โI get it. See you in the morning.โ
โGet what?โ I snap, taking off my boots, โYouโre infuriating, you know that?โ
Wylan shrugs, smoking his damn weed wandering off towards the outbuildings. Jax shots me one last soft smile with steel eyes boring into mine before I go inside with mixed feelings.
I fall back into bed in panties and a tank top. I canโt sleep, listening to Wylan and Jax laugh and play cards while my thoughts return again and again to the way Jaxโs hands explored my body. The way he watches at me with those intense stormy gray eyes as if he knows what I want but wonโt give in to temptation. I push him away too, scared Braden will find out another man is touching his precious Princess. Gah, fire settles in my core and I toss and turn wondering if I ever will lose my V card.
As Iโm dozing off, the door opens and Jax sticks his head in to check on me. He does this every night, and I normally pretend to be asleep but tonight sit up, beckoning him closer with one crooked finger. His eyes become hooded and his body tenses as he closes the door coming to stand over the bed.
โWill you sleep with me? Hold me… just hold me?โ I breathe out.
His hands clench, โI donโt think thatโs a good idea. Plus, this bed is fucking small as hell.โ
I lay back, pulling the sheet low, so he sees what Iโm wearing. I have no idea how to seduce a man. Braden always handled me the way he wanted. Having a choice about who touches my body is liberating, but itโs been so long since someone held me.
Jax groans and his eyes roam across my exposed flesh, โFuck Coralee. I canโt.โ
Blushing, I pull the sheet back up. Iโm an idiot. Why would Jax want a girl when he has someone like Bria in his life? โI-Iโm sorry Jax. Iโm…โ
“Stop,” he growls, sitting down next to my hips, โYouโre so fucking beautiful I can barely take my eyes off of you sometimes. Thereโs so much I want to show you, to experience. If I let myself get carried away in what I want, then Iโm not focusing on what you need. Iโve been a selfish bastard all my life Sunflower, and I will do better for you.โ
I swallow the sudden lump of tears his kind words bring rasping, โFor me?โ
โYes,โ his deep timber soothes as his hand cups my cheek and this time I nuzzle into his touch yearning for more, โIโll do anything for you. Sunflower, I want to make you believe in the kindness of the world again because for a long time I felt like you. A slave to others needs and wants.โ He nods as if heโs agreeing with his own words, his rough palm sliding behind my neck massaging my flushed skin, โJust because I want to take things slow, doesnโt mean I donโt want you. Fuck, I want you all the time. Even when youโre being a brat.โ
My mouth parts but no words come out because Jax leaves me speechless. His massive body leans in and I moan when his lips meet mine. I shiver lustfully as his hold on my neck allows Jax to deliver our best-shared kiss yet. Itโs deep, raw and messy with panting murmurs of the things he wants to do to my body. My breast ache, sharpening against his broad chest. I moan again, gripping his arms as if my life depends on it, my body on fire for more. More sentimental declarations and more of his panty-melting kisses.
โJax…โ I mewl, shamelessly rubbing my tits in his face.
โShh,โ he gently eases my grip on his biceps, breathing as hard as I am, โGo to sleep Sunflower. Tomorrow weโll work on your exercise routine. I put new workout clothes in the closet.โ
I blink, the fog of lust too thick to comprehend heโs bought me more things I donโt need. Why is he so obsessed with my physical fitness? Itโs fun though, and when Jax is covered in sweat, I swear my ovaries kick.
I lick the taste of him off my lips, savoring it, โThank you, Jax.โ
He stands with a huge smile that lights me on fire again, โThank you for trusting me.โ
He lets himself out and I ignore the burning ache between my legs. Jax is so damn hot and wants me. How did I get to this place with a man that understands I need to find myself before rushing into anything? Heโs so patient and kind.
Who made Jax give up on life and move out here? I want to know everything about this enigmatic man and I canโt deny my feelings anymore.
Iโm falling in love with Jax.
If remaining in Perla means I can have Jax Iโm staying even with the possibility of Braden finding out and ruining it all. I believe Jax when he professes he can protect me but hope it doesnโt come down to that because of my selfishness.
Chapter 8
* Jaxxen *
I trust Wylan but with the man hanging around my house, flirting shamelessly with Coralee it makes me wonder if I can trust him to keep his dick in his pants. Iโm sure Wylan wouldnโt actually try to fuck her, but when his eyes linger a little too long on her ass or when he inserts raunchy opinions into our conversations, it makes my jaw tick in irritation. Coralee seems oblivious which takes the sting away.
For over a week I kept my distance from Coralee except for working out or meals, and she took everything in stride. I kiss her like a damn schoolboy but there are no more visits to her bedroom or long talks.
I want Coraleeโs complete confidence before having a serious discussion about Braden and what she plans to do. Thereโs information concerning her family we still need to disclose but luckily no one brings the subject up and I go to bed each night thankful for another drama free day with the girl Iโm falling for.
Wylan taught Coralee self-dense moves one evening and as I watched them touch and laugh, my insecurities surfaced. Am I too old for Coralee? She isnโt even twenty-one yet while Iโve been through a lifetime of shit. She deserves a carefree life for someone her age and although Coralee behaves and speaks like an old soul, still has a lot to learn.
โI bet I can outrun you, Jax,โ Wylan taunts stretching his legs before we left on a hike, โLetโs race.โ
โAre you ten years old?โ Coralee teases but stretches too.
I keep myself in check when Wylanโs eyes stare at her chest which I admit; I gawk at too. The new workout clothes I gave her test my control. Her body has filled out the last weeks sheโs lived with me and canโt help but want to run my tongue over her new curves. She has the best rack and ass Iโve seen in years.
Sadly, the skimpy runners top let us see the scar where Braden tagged her before she crudely cut it out. Imagining the bravery Coralee must have dug deep the day she did it makes my dick a little hard.
โYou donโt even know the terrain,โ I dryly remind them both, โLetโs do the two-mile hike first. Got your water bottle Coralee?โ
She flashes a smile picking up the container, โYup. Such a wonderful morning. How hot do you think itโll be today?โ
โNot very since itโs early spring,โ I reply, beginning a fast-paced walk itching to run but Iโm doing this to show Coralee the path I normally take.
Wylan sighs and falls into step although I told him he doesnโt have to come. Itโs a perfect morning for hiking as the winds are low and the sky clear. Wylan doesnโt shut up for a while, explaining to Coralee how he hacks into peopleโs data. Sometimes heโs too cocky for his own good, but Coralee wonโt say anything to anyone.
โWhy would you do that?โ she sounds offended, โI know you hacked my information, but itโs illegal and immoral.โ
โImmoral,โ Wylan scoffs, โDo you think the government cares when they do the same thing? Itโs not as if Iโm digging into womenโs info, jacking off in my momsโ basement with-โ
I spin around and caught Coralee shocked expression, โDude, fucking quit.โ
Coraleeโs hazel eyes find mine, and they seem troubled. There are questions in her beautiful eyes I refuse to answer. I want to help her but if the truth about my past comes between her trust and happiness, I wouldnโt know where to start to repair it. Iโm a Grade A-Asshole and Wylan not far behind.
The night she bared her nearly naked and extremely fuckable body begging for my touch, all I wanted to do was settle between those milky thighs and do what comes naturally, but I need to be better than that. Ever since I laid eyes on Coralee, felt in my soul sheโs the one. The one I wanted to give it all too. Now knowing all the fucking drama she brings; another matter altogether. I want Coralee any which way I can, but need to make sure sheโs mentally and physically willing. Iโve ruined more experienced women, and she deserves better.
โI love seeing you smile,โ I whisper in her ear as we walk side by side.
Coralee gazed up with those pretty hazel eyes giving a shy smile, โStop! Sometimes I think you say things like that just to make me-โ
โRen!โ Wylan snaps when my dog barks and growls ahead of the trail.
I place a firm hand on Coralee arm, โHe only barks when predators are around.โ
Wylan and Coralee stand aside as I watch my dogs do their job. After living alone with them all these years we three are a unit. I see Coralee giving me a curious look, but focus on what my boys perceive as a threat. After five minutes they trot back, calm and lick my hand telling me itโs safe to proceed.
โWhat was it?โ Coralee shifts uneasily side to side.
I shoot her a reassuring smile, โProbably a coyote. Come on, itโs okay.โ
Wylan and I resume walking with Coralee bringing up the back. Ren and Stimpy relax and playfully scamper along the trial which helps Coralee resume her good mood and soon weโre talking about the plants along the path.
I ramble, explaining the edible ones like Shepherdโs Purse which is a little bitter but has a lot of benefits. She listens and stops to poke at the plant while Wylan and I keep going. Coralee soaks in knowledge like a sponge which is impressive and sexy as hell.
By the time we reach the two-mile mark, which I measured out by a rock big enough for me to lean onto, Coralee goads Wylan into a race. I watch amused, no longer jealous as itโs obvious their relationship is turning into bratty brother and sister rapport. Thank fuck for that because Iโm not sure if Iโd stand in their way. Wylanโs practically the same age while thereโs over a decade between her and me.
โYou may be tall but Iโm fast,โ Wylan smugly jeers.
Coralee pivots on her heels and takes off. I chuckle when Wylan shouts sheโs a cheat, running after her. I push off of the rock and jog to see Coralee way ahead of Wylan although the man tried hard, sheโs faster. Thereโs a bend, and I lose sight of them for a few seconds but then I hear Coralee cry out and sprint forward fearful sheโs in danger.
โCoralee!โ I shout, rounding the bend to see her over Wylan shoulder screeching.
โLet me go!โ she laughingly demands, beating on his wide backside with open palms.
Wylan chuckles, spinning around with a grin, โShe cheated. Gotta keep your eye on this one, Jax.โ
I roll my eyes and take Coraleeโs hips, pulling her back to my front. โYou were going to be beaten by a girl and couldnโt stand it. Just admit it.โ
Coralee slid down my body slapping at Wylan chest, โExactly.โ
Wylan grins but doesnโt respond, walking back towards the cabin. I shake my head at their antics while Coralee catches her breath. Sheโs adorable all flushed and sweaty and when I smell the scent of her vanilla lotion, pretend to admire the sky, so I donโt do something stupid like drag her into the trees to have my way with her.
โI love it out here,โ she says with a sigh, walking once more, โYou know so much about the flora and fauna.โ
I raise an eyebrow, โCan I ask you a question?โ
She nods, long ponytail bobbing, and I picture running my fingers through the silky-looking locks while she chokes on my cock. Fuck! I need to stop before she noticed the raging hard-on I sport every time weโre alone. Coralee drives me absolutely crazy, and it takes a lot of willpower to keep my hands off of her. Kissing like high school kids does nothing when alone in bed picturing her tits and the way she shook in my arms, begging for it.
โOf course.โ
Right. Back to my questions. โIโm guessing you never finished high school-โ
โI did though,โ she cuts me off defensively, โI took online courses and have a high school diploma.โ
Just another thing Braden did for Coralee Iโm confused over. He made sure sheโs educated and able to keep a home but never had sex with her. What was his end game?
โBraden gave you have access to the internet?โ I question.
She narrows her eyes, โIf youโre asking why didnโt I seek help there was none. He monitored everything down to how many tampons I used.โ
I shake my head at how this conversation is going. Like shit! โIโm not trying to imply anything, Sunflower. Seriously. Iโm more than a little curious about the way things were between you two.โ
She opens the water bottle taking a long drink before replying, โThings were always a bit blurry between us Jax. To say he loved me with a single focus is an understatement.โ
The cabin came into view, โIt must be hard to talk about it, but I want you to know you can.โ
โWhat about you, Jax?โ
โWhat about me?โ
โWill you talk about your past if I tell you about mine?โ
I try to keep my shoulders relaxed but my hands clench, โI suppose thatโs a fair trade, but all in good time.โ
โYou want me to explain my relationship with Braden but refuse to tell me anything about yourself!โ she spins around, eyes searching mine for truths she wonโt find, โI need answers, Jax. You said you hurt people for a living. Are you a bad man?โ
Shrugging I carefully say, โCanโt deny Iโve done awful things but am I bad for you is a more relevant question. I wonโt betray or purposely hurt you. I want to be better.โ
โAs to what?โ she pries, โWere you like the men Braden made babysit me?โ
โNo.โ
I walk away, hating myself for not giving Coralee answers when I need more information about Braden. Maybe I should ask Wylan to speak to her. She meanders behind, calling to the dogs who are sniffing something out. I glance back one more time before going inside, watching Coralee go into the GYM. The morning took a dark turn and I hate sheโs hiding from me.
In the kitchen, I down a glass of water then check my phone, glad there are no messages. Since itโs not lunchtime yet head to the office. As Iโm punched in the pin, hear a phone ringing upstairs. Curious I hurry to find the source, finding Coraleeโs little flip phone ringing. A burner. Smart girl. Who had she given the number out to? Even I donโt know her number.
Not wanting to invade Coraleeโs privacy, I lock myself in the office and spend a good hour messing around on the computer. Iโd formed a paranoid habit of checking into the people of my past, making sure they arenโt anywhere near Perla. Living out in the middle of nowhere has its perks but remaining vigilant keep my instincts from slipping.
When I come out to see if Coraleeโs hungry, find them eating at the table on the porch. I relax when she says thereโs food in the kitchen for me. Coraleeโs so considerate and kind itโs hard to imagine someone abused this incredible girl. I hesitate to kiss her but think what the hell, and place a chaste kiss on her forehead, feeling her stiffen and it kills me to think all my progress with her may have come undone with one misunderstood conversation.
โKiss the cook,โ Wylan jokes, puckering up.
I smirk, โYou wish.โ
Coralee giggles, but a wary air remains between us when I return to the table to eat. I need to tell Coralee about my past soon. When I do, hope to still see that sparkle in her bright hazel eyes.
Chapter 9
* Coralee *
I like routines.
My mom and dad instilled in me repetitive daily acts when I was young, hoping to curb my boundless energy. At age seven, they brought me into the bakery to mix ingredients, and I loved it.
As I grew older, during the week Iโd go to school, but afterward, I helped in the shop, and by the time I turned sixteen, I had perfected every recipe and learned how to run the place so my parents could rest more.
I dreamed one day Iโd take over, teaching my children how to knead dough and make the perfect caramel apple popover.
When I moved into Bradenโs home, I cultivated another routine with his specific instructions, which I slipped into. Not that those first few weeks were nothing but tears and pain. Besides the parties and excessive sexual games he liked to play, Braden taught me things I wouldnโt have undertaken on my own.
He said he wanted me to think for myself even if heโs the one telling me how to behave.
Braden was always a challenge, but because I couldn’t escape his control, I made an effort to please him.
Now, here I am, standing fresh out of the shower, looking at myself in the mirror with nothing to do but get dressed. Jax doesnโt care what I do. When on the run from Braden, I nabbed any job I came across to keep myself busy. The constant fear Braden would pop up and end the game was a real motivator to stay active.
A knock at the bedroom door startles me, and I hastily pull on a robe. โYes?โ
โItโs me, Sunflower,โ Jaxโs deep voice drawls.
Smiling, I threw it open.
Things became awkward during our morning hike, and I feel guilty. All week I waited for the inevitable questions regarding my past, and when they came, I turned defensive.
No matter how attracted I am to Jax, there are certain subjects I refuse to discuss.
He takes me in, gray eyes intense. Crap. Heโs not happy, so I step back. โWhatโs up, Jax?โ
He lingers in the doorway, corded arms hanging loose although his body is stiff. โI heard a phone ring earlier, and it was yours. It dawned on me that I need your phone number.”
“Oh?”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “If that’s okay?”
I walk over to the bedside table, flipping open the old burner cell Iโd bought the first chance I got after escaping Braden. โOk, it was Tom.โ I listened to the voicemail and then tossed the phone aside. โHe needs help this weekend. I guess the rodeo and fair attract quite a crowd.โ
Jax sits on the bed, making the frame drop when he stretches his long legs out.
I peeked in his room once. His bed can hold six of me, but Jax is so tall and impossibly big it probably barely fits him. Iโve never seen someone as large and in shape as Jax outside MMA matches. Again Iโm reminded heโd have been a magnificent Viking in another place and time. His sun-kissed skin and dark hair belied Norse heritage, but the image remains in my head.
โItโs true that the town fills up because the fairgrounds sit outside the county line. Tom’s Tavern is the only drinking hole available. Do you want to help the old man out?โ His jaw ticks once.
I wrap the tie of the robe over my hand. โI donโt see why not. He helped me when no one else did and could use the money, but before you say anything, I need to get out and do something.โ
Jax nods, eyeing my bare legs. The garment is short, falling above my knees, and I wonder if he bought it to torture himself.
Once again thereโs an undercurrent of attraction that simmers below the surface every time weโre alone.
Gah, his smiles are my Kryptonite. Yes, Iโm team Superman, and Braden gifted me the complete movie collection so I could nerd out as an eighteenth birthday present. Thinking of Braden once more makes me cringe, but luckily Jax doesnโt notice.
โWhen does Tom need you there?โ Jax asks, then leans forward, snatching my hips so I fall between his muscled thighs. โI know Wylan wants to see cowgirls in tight jeans.โ
My pulse races each time he touches me, and this time is no different. He smells so good, like fresh-cut wood and something that is purely Jax. He spends so much time outdoors; his scent is infused with the pure mountain air.
Bravely, I perch on his right knee, wrapping my arm around his wide shoulders. His flint eyes drop to my lips, and without wondering if I shouldnโt, I kiss Jax as if Iโm trying to taste his sins.
โShit,โ he breathes across my upturned face, โyou smell damn good, Sunflower.โ
โI was just thinking the same thing about you, Jax.โ
He clears his throat. โAnyway, what are your plans?โ
I shrug, running a fingertip over his corded muscles. โIโll call Tom back and tell him Iโm free. Heโll need me until Monday. The rodeo ends Sunday, right?โ
He hums in agreement, turning to kiss me again.
โJaxโฆโ His name is a plea and a confession.
A muscle jumps in his jaw. The ravenous hunger in his gaze doesnโt fade, but itโs joined by something else, something painfully tender that makes my heart clench. He leans down, his lips brushing the shell of my ear, his voice a gravelly whisper. โYou keep looking at me like that, Sunflower, and Tomโs gonna be waiting a long damn time.โ
I cling to his hard body, letting him have mine at will. Heโs such an excellent kisser, lips soft yet firm. His tongue flicks on the roof of my mouth, tangling sensually with my own.
My senses heighten, my body on fire as I lace my fingers in his dark hair. I become so aroused and lost in the kiss that when he lifts his head for air, I find myself on my back with one of his knees grinding against my core.
Jax watches me pant and rub myself against the rough denim of his jeans like a cat in heat with ravenous hunger in his stormy gray eyes. I shiver in his embrace, hoping he doesnโt mind the wet spot I left.
โYou guys should really close the door!โ
Jax glares over his shoulder, barking, โItโs my house, asshole! Go away!โ
โWylan!โ I gasp, mortified, and with a sigh, Jax rolls away to stand.
“Caught!”
I straighten my robe before sitting on the edge of the mattress. Wylan smirks at the both of us, no shame on his face as he watched us make out like horny teenagers.
I finally understand that Wylan really is shameless.
Jax squeezes my knee, asking Wylan what he wants in a terse voice. My face feels like hot lava was poured over my head.
โDinner,โ Wylan gives me a once-over before walking away.
I awkwardly laugh to ease the tension. โWhy donโt you fire up the grill while I get dressed?โ
Jax places a tender kiss on my forehead. โOkay. Iโm sorry. Wylan needs a lesson in boundaries.โ
I wave a hand in the air, resisting the urge to drag him back down. โHeโs like a kid who always has to see what everyone is doing. Itโs fine. The door was open after all.โ
After Jax leaves, I pull on a loose summer dress and then call Tom. Heโs glad to hear Iโm willing to help over the weekend and explained his niece is also coming in to lend a hand.
When I come downstairs, I smell steak, and my stomach growls like I havenโt eaten today. Jax pushes food my way like a drug dealer, always urging me to take a little more. I think Iโve gained at least five pounds since moving in.
โI put the potatoes in earlier to bake,โ Jax informs me. โWhat else do you want?โ
With such an open-ended question, Iโm tempted to say we go back upstairs, but I shrugged and set the table instead. Wylan sat down, peering wordlessly at me with a stony gaze in his bloodshot eyes. He smokes a lot of weed, making me wonder if he does it to forget something.
I help Jax bring in the fat juicy steaks, laughing when Ren and Stimpy whine in an attempt to make one of us give in and share our food. Unfortunately, Ren and Stimpy continue to be spoiled dogs!
โRodeo?โ Wylan mutters, cutting into his steak like it offended him, โI miss the city.โ
โYouโre welcome to go back,โ Jax shoots back, โHave you shared all the information I need to find Braden?โ
โWhat?โ I drop my fork. โNo, you canโt, Jax. I told you to leave Braden alone!โ
Jax looks incredulous. โYou want to sit here and let him attack us unprepared? Thatโs not how I do things, and Iโm not scared. And I told you, Coralee, I can take care of this problem.โ
Take care of this problem?
I stand up so fast my chair tips backward. โI donโt need you to take care of him. This problem. Wylan said heโs missing. He might even be dead.โ
Both men stare at me as if I lost my mind. Breathing hard with my fists clenched at my sides, I kind of wondered if I am. Anxiety curls up my spine as I wait for Jax to tell me he wonโt go after Braden.
โIโm not bending on this, Coralee.โ Jax calmly forks a piece of steak, ignoring my outburst. โI care too much about your safety to chance Braden finding his way to Perla. Donโt you want to see justice?โ
I want to stomp my feet but donโt. โWhat justice? The police?โ
Wylan laughs, scooting away from the table. โOh honey, Jax serves his justice with blood spilled.โ
“Donโt!” Jax warns with a growl.
โThis isnโt funny, Wylan!โ I glare at them, hoping they take me seriously. โYou know nothing!โ
Jax exhales, slowly setting down his cutlery as if it takes every effort not to throw it across the room. โThen tell me, Coralee. Tell me why I should let Braden find you?โ
โItโs not your problem, and maybe this was a mistake.โ
My voice comes out nasty and petulant, and when I turn to leave the room, he snaps, โWhy wonโt you trust me to do the right thing, Coralee? Braden fucked with your head, but Iโm not. You canโt run forever, and you shouldnโt want to. Do you want my help before ending up dead?โ
I cross my arms defiantly. โIโve told you Bradenโs more clever than you realize.โ
Jax stands up, and I want to run. He doesnโt scare me physically, but truth does. Why wonโt he let this go?
Keeping his distance, Jaxโs eyes rake over me with a look I canโt comprehend. โDo you want to feel safe? Do you want to go into town and make friends and find out who you are as a person? Or, are you going to keep pushing away people that genuinely care about you, Coralee?โ
What can I say to that? โOf course I do, Jax. Jesus, I do care, but itโs not your responsibility. We barely know each other, and you need to respect that fact.โ
His flint eyes never blink. โI understand. Are you finished eating?โ
I glance at my half-eaten plate. โYes.โ
Jax nods and then sits back down to eat his dinner, not giving me another glance or word. Angry and confused, I stomp out of the room and up the stairs. I noticed Wylan simply sat there smiling after my outburst. He probably thinks Iโm a bratty, ungrateful child who Jax shouldnโt waste another minute with.
Still dressed, I curl up on the bed with tears in my eyes. Jax is right. If I continue to reject the kindness of others willing to help me, what kind of life am I leading?
โOne day I will marry you.โ Braden breathed in my ear while flicking my hardened nipples, โYou believe Iโm incapable of love after everything Iโve put you through, but I love you, Cora. Say it.โ
I stared at the fine blonde hair on his chest as he continued to torment my breast and whispered in a dispassionate voice the words he needed to hear to end this nightly game, โI love you too.โ
โYes, you do, princess,โ he whispered back, kissing the tip of my nose. โIโve taught you how to submit but keep pure. You are so perfectly intact, yet you are broken. Oh, if only everything were different. Say it again?โ
I looked away, to the headboard where the soft silk bindings held my wrist. โI love you, Braden.โ
He always made me tell him how much I loved and cared for him. I don’t think anyone else in the world ever told him that, except for me.
Bradenโs voice slithered back into my thoughts, smooth as the silk that had held me.
You are broken.
He was right. But he was wrong about the breakage being his masterpiece. The crack was where the light was trying to get in.
Blinking back tears, I pull the covers up to my chin, resting on my side.
I need people like Jax in my life, but itโs hard trusting others with the pain and joy I experienced with Braden. I had to decide if staying with Jax made me completely selfish or if I truly can take back my life with the help of men who want to kill Braden.
Chapter 10
* Jaxxen *
Waking up Friday morning, I laid in bed for several minutes going over last nights events. Coraleeโs unexpected hissy-fit insisting I leave Braden alone makes my brain hurt. Is there something sheโs hiding about their relationship? I donโt understand her behavior. Itโs irrational and dangerous and I canโt force her hand, although itโs in my nature to demand answers.
I sit up, raking a hand over my face feeling the need to run. To clear my head. After getting dressed amble downstairs, surprised to smell coffee then spot Wylan at the dining room table with Coralee, his files spread out. Itโs a little after six in the morning and I frown, wondering why they are up so early.
โHey.โ Coraleeโs usual bright eyes are dim.
I look at Wylan receiving no hint of what I should expect from Coralee, โWhatโs up?โ
He shrugs packing away the same folders Iโd gone through a dozen times searching for clues to Bradenโs whereabouts, โCora wanted to discuss the facts before deciding so I explained the rest of what I found out about her family.โ
A decision about what? Every time I think I have a handle on Coralee she throws me for a loop. Is she going to leave? My heart thumps heavily in my chest at the prospect.
โI have an older brother,โ she sounds so sad that I itch to wrap her up in my arms, โHis name is Cavan. Wylan says itโs pronounced like Kav-an.โ
I only nod and wander into the kitchen for much-needed caffeine. From dealing with women in the past, know to not push for more than sheโs willing to share. Coffee in hand I return to the table and standby.
Coralee sighs, tucking a leg under her bottom and bites her lip. Wylan gives me a half smile before going to refill his mug. Silence looms heavy in the room but I have the patience to wait it out.
โI need to be at the tavern by ten,โ she finally says then sighs again, โIโm sorry I was a brat, Jax. I want to stay here with you and do all the things you mentioned but Iโll always be looking over my shoulder. Youโre right, I havenโt been living, only surviving. But, I need time. Iโm asking for you to wait.โ
Why is she against even finding out where the bastards hiding? I tongue the inside of my cheek deliberating. โTell you what, after the weekend weโll come back to discussing Braden. You need some fun so Iโll ask Tom to let me take you to the fair for dinner. Howโs that?โ
Her smile is genuine with an added rose tint on her cheeks, โIโd love that Jax. Iโve never been to a rodeo.โ
โYouโll love it. Iโm going on a run then weโll go into town.โ
When I arrive outside my dogs trot over to exercise with me. For years this has been our routine. Early morning runs are the best when the airs crisp and birds are loud in their wake-up calls. I take my time, ruminating on Coralee and Braden. Thereโs something off Iโm not grasping but I tell myself to hold on until Monday.
Monday Iโll tell Coralee about my past because I canโt expect her to trust me without admitting how damaged we both are. When I voice she isnโt alone with internal struggles, hope it brings us closer together instead of causing her to run away in fear. I still believe sheโs the one for me even if she needs time to realize it.
Later that morning, when we pile into the Jeep, I remember to ask Coralee for her cell phone number. Quickly, everyone exchanges digits then I head into town for something Iโve avoided and not particularly looking forward to.
I attended Perlasโ annual fair and rodeo a few times finding it always the same. The townspeople are close-knit but when outsiders invaded their turf, itโs as if neighbors and friends take that one weekend to be extra greedy and spiteful.
My eyes skim over Coralee, whoโs wearing a simple black t-shirt and jeans with comfortable sneakers. A sudden nervous fear that a drunk will start a fight and hurt her in the process makes my hands strangle the wheel but force myself to relax. Coralee knows how to handle herself.
After parking in the half-full lot of the tavern, tell Wylan to wait and walk Coralee inside. The old jukebox along the far wall next to the pool table and sad looking dart board are being well used by excited patrons. The place is already rowdy and I donโt like it one fucking bit.
Coralee gives me a weary expression, โPlease donโt tell me you plan on another stakeout.โ
I chuckle, โNo, but I promised to have a word with Tom.โ
When I spot the old man in his usual place behind the counter lean in, asking if I can take Coralee out for dinner around five. He winks knowingly before checking the list of activities going on at the fairgrounds, agreeing she can go if I promise to have her back by seven.
I pull Coralee close at the entrance and she smiles up at me with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. The song โTennessee Whiskeyโ plays, and the lyrics are fitting as I appreciate her strawberry colored hair. Holding her left hand while my other one grips the back of her neck, take her mouth in a bruising kiss, ignoring the whistles. As usual, Coralee responds with as much passion as Iโm trying to convey. Thereโs nothing sweeter than a kiss from Coralee.
She steps out of my hold gasping, โI have to get to work Casanova.โ
I smirk, licking my lips tasting her cherry lip gloss, โIโll be back this evening. Call me if you need anything. Promise?โ
Her pale skin is glowing as she waves me away, โYes, I promise Jax. Go have fun with Wylan and promise me you wonโt let him accost a poor ranchers daughter.โ
I laugh at that and when I rejoin Wylan and repeat what Coralee said he scowls but then raises his eyebrows as if considering actually doing it just that to piss her off. Wylanโs a young single, good-looking guy, and I know thereโs going to be a few women that day trying to sell him more than baked goodies.
The smell of hay and manure along with fried foods and God knows what else assaults my senses after Wylan and I exit the Jeep after parking in a big dirt field. Since itโs nearing noon the fairs in full swing.
โWhat theโฆ look at that!โ Wylan points to a raised stage where a group of children ran around like theyโre on fire while a harassed-looking woman had her hands up as if begging for help, โDoesnโt get more country than a bunch of Children of the Corn kids wreaking havoc.โ
Grinning, we watch as the children tumble into each other before the woman grabbed hold of the one that seemed to be the ringleader. Other adults standing nearby donโt react when the little boy pushes the woman, and she falls to her knees. Damn, kids are brutal!
I glance the other way, just in time to see Bria and her gaggle of girlfriends heading our direction, recognizing a few, chiefly the red-head from the grocery store. Cursing, I pinch the bridge of my nose and Wylan follows my line of sight.
โGreat timing,โ Wylan jokes, โDonโt scare them off too soon.โ
โOhmigod Jax,โ Bria titters, not giving me an inch of personal space as she leans in so far I can smell the sweet chocolate on her breath, โI didnโt think youโd come! Girls, meet Peter, Jaxโs friend. Did you get my brownies? I know how much you adore them.โ
I side-eyed Wylan, โOh right, Peter, and I enjoyed them very much. Thank you, Bria.โ
She beams, her usual painted red lips a subtle pink today. Her blonde hairs pulled back in a girly ponytail and the jeans and top she has on are considerably less slutty than Iโm used to seeing her wear. She must have dressed down to appear a simple country girl hoping to impress those who donโt realize sheโs the towns good-time gal. Her father has the most successful cattle ranch in the area and she has the most success rate for sucking dick.
โMmm, so delicious,โ Wylan plays it up, โHey girls, I heard there will be a cook-off?โ
The four women with Bria chat excitedly, and I avoid making eye contact. I donโt need the drama Bria can stir up over the weekend, especially if Iโm bringing Coralee back with me tonight. Everyone talks in Perla, even the damn walls.
โCome with us,โ Katie, I believe her name is, latches onto Wylanโs arm, โThe chili cook-off starts soon. Are you a betting man?โ
Wylan smirks, โDepends.โ
โWell,โ she bats her eyelashes, โI bet youโll need something to quench your thirst after tasting so many goodies. Iโll be around if you want to have a drink later.โ
Wylan cast the women a charming lure with a megawatt smile, catching all but Bria in his net. โIโm parched. Lead the way.โ
โWhat about me!โ the red-head from the grocery store pouts, โPeter, youโll never guess the secret ingredient to my chocolate eclairs!โ
โGo ahead,โ I wave them off when Wylan gives me a head tilt, โI want to walk around.โ
โIโll come with you,โ Bria grabs my arm, pulling us in the opposite direction of her friends, โThanks for coming by to see me.โ I refrain an eye roll, โBy the way Jax, Iโm glad that girl, Cora left. Itโs scary that people like her can settle into our peaceful town.โ
I stop cold and give her a penetrating gaze. She looks confused, so I ask, โBack up. What do you know about Coralee?โ
Bria huffs and toes the dirt with her boots, โWell, what did anyone know about Cora before she turned up at Tomsโ? Why was she at your house? Are youโฆ with her?โ
โItโs none of your business,โ Briaโs mouth pops open in an O, โWhat do you mean sheโs gone?โ
โNo need to be rude, Jax. At the store the other day a man stopped people in the parking lot asking if anyone had seen his sister. I recognized Cora immediately. Apparently, sheโs off her meds and-โ
I donโt listen to the rest.
Braden found Coralee.
My blood boils in my veins as I call Wylan, not wasting another second on my way back to my Jeep. I canโt believe I left Coralee alone! Stupid!
โJax!โ Bria screams behind me, โWhatโs wrong? Seriously? Where are you going? Are you coming back?โ
โYeah?โ Wylan sounds confused because we just separated.
โBradenโs in town. If you donโt make it back to the jeep by the time I do Iโm leaving.โ
I shove the phone back in my pocket and take off in a dead run, shoving people aside without apologizing. If Bradenโs been in town for days, heโs waited for Coralee to be alone and Tom doesnโt even realize sheโs in danger. Fucking Bria and her jealous fat mouth!
As I turn the key in the ignition, Wylan barrels into the side of the door and flings himself over onto the seat. โShit! How long has he been here? Pull up the tracer on the necklace.โ
I toss my phone into his hands while maneuvering around people and vehicles, honking my horn loudly and incessantly, โItโs the sunflower on the last screen but I fucking know. I know Braden took her.โ Wylan shows me the blip of the transmitter still coming from Tomsโ Tavern, โWeโll find out soon.โ
