Summary

In an effort to put her life back together, Omara travels to her aunt and uncle’s pack. She went there seeking a fresh start, a chance for her soul to find peace, but what she finds is so much more than she ever bargained for!

Chapter 1

Omara

“Omara McFae, I, Kyle Lowry, reject you as my mate.” My heart feels as if it’s exploding into a million tiny pieces. My lungs feel as though they’re being crushed, leaving me wishing that death would embrace me and free me from this misery.

It’s been almost three months since Kyle rejected me in front of my entire pack during the pack’s monthly pack gathering. Being the quiet and invisible person that I am, no one felt sympathy for me because technically, they never knew me. The pain of that day still radiates within me, but thankfully it’s dulled ever so slightly, or perhaps I’ve just grown accustomed to the agony of it.

Kyle wasted no time moving on and is now taking the former beta’s daughter as his chosen mate, which works since he’s the new alpha’s beta, while I’m left alone, used and unwanted. A few days ago, my mother approached me with an idea of me going to my aunts in the northern territory for the summer to see if it might help me to move past the horrible pain and depression that are slowly eating me alive. I’ve just finished packing and after taking one last look around my room, I take my bags and head downstairs.

“Did you take everything you’ll need, O?” My brother, Liam, calls out from somewhere in the kitchen.

“I packed everything but the bathroom sink. Where’s mom?” He walks out of the kitchen and into the hall, stopping directly in front of me.

“She ran to fill the tank on the car and get you both some snacks for the trip.” He hesitates and shifts awkwardly then suddenly throws his arms around me. “I’m going to miss you so fucking much.”

“Awe, I’m going to miss you too, you big ape.” Liam has never been one for words, but he’s always been my rock. I honestly believe that if I didn’t have him in my life, the rejection would’ve killed me. He held my hand, stayed with me and comforted me through the worst of it and I couldn’t love him more for it. Since that day, he’s been in several fights and spent most of his time jumping to my defense, always standing at my side like a silent sentinel.

Being the rejected mate has given my packmates endless ammunition to use as a means to torment me and completely obliterated the invisibility that used to protect me, but I still don’t know what I ever did to them to deserve their hatred and torment. I went from being invisible to being a target overnight. Liam pulls away and I can see the tears glistening in his eyes, even though he tries to hide them away.

“I can hear the car. You should get out there before she comes in and delays your trip with a walk down memory lane.” We both chuckle softly and hug once more before I leave my home. I throw my bags into the trunk of the car, climb in the passenger seat and as soon as I’m buckled, we’re off. The first hour of our car ride is filled with only the sound of the music on the radio and while the tension in the air is thick, the silence is most welcome, though eventually my mom decides to try and fill it.

“Your aunt Avery is excited to have you stay with them. She seems quite confident that you might find a second chance mate while you’re there.” I roll my eyes and shift to gaze out my window, wondering why the hell everyone seems so set on shoving me off onto another mate as if it would fix me.

“A mate is the furthest thing from my mind, mom. I know you’ve never experienced the pain of being rejected, but it isn’t something I’ll ever be willing to experience again.” My voice breaks at the end as I choke back a sob. I know that, not having gone through it for herself, this is a foreign subject for her. It’s as if she expects me to just pick myself up and dust myself off then move on, but it’s not that easy. How can you pick yourself up when your pieces are so fucking scattered?

“I know sweetheart, but you really should open yourself up to the possibility because you deserve to be happy.” I sigh loudly and turn my head to face her, wanting her to actually see the way her words are hurting me.

“Opening myself up to the possibility of happiness is also opening myself up to the possibility of soul crushing heartbreak. If dad died, would you just move on?” I know I might be pushing a bit too far, but so is she and she needs to know that. I know she sounds like she’s just trying to help, but she’s been pushing this since mere days after the public rejection and it’s quickly taking its toll.

“It’s not the same, Omara, and you know it.” I feel something in me break before I even speak my response.

“You’re right. If dad died, you wouldn’t have to see him walking around with the woman he rejected you for. You wouldn’t have to live with the constant reminder that he chose someone else over you, that you weren’t good enough.” Those are the last words spoken during our eleven hour drive. We arrive at my aunt’s just past nine pm and I can tell that my mom feels as exhausted as I do. My aunt rushes out as we’re closing the doors to the car and quickly pulls me in for a hug.

“Oh, sweet girl, I’ve missed you so much. I can’t believe how much you’ve grown!” She pulls away and her kind eyes scan my body as if committing the changes to memory.

“Eight years will do that.” I reply dryly.

“Don’t mind her, she’s been like this since the…event.” Apparently, that’s how we’re describing me being rejected by my mate in a very public setting and shunned by my entire pack…a damn event.

“Oh, it’s okay. She’s well within her rights to be hurt, angry, or whatever else she might be feeling right now. I hope being here will help her to move forward and find her purpose.” I have to respect her determination, but I doubt anything will help at this point. Everything feels so hopeless.

“I think she just needs to hold her head high and show that bastard that he doesn’t have any power over her.” My mom makes it seem so simple, but it’s really not since he does have power over me! If he didn’t, I wouldn’t be continuing to suffer while he parades around with his chosen mate like he didn’t completely destroy me.

“I think she’s doing the best she can and we just need to be supportive of her. We’ll do whatever we can to help her through this, but she has to be allowed to grieve the loss.” My mom rolls her eyes at my aunt because, no matter what anyone says, she just doesn’t understand.

“There’s nothing to grieve, Avery. Her mate rejected her, he didn’t die.” I love my mom, I really do, but she really can be a bitch sometimes.

“Avery dear, I’m sure they’re exhausted after that long drive. Let’s get them settled and you can catch up in the morning.” Uncle Randy calls out from the front porch. My mother helps me grab my bags and Avery shows us to our rooms. I forgot how huge their house is. My uncle was the Head of security for the former Alpha and as such, was given the best of everything. Their log cabin style home has five bedrooms that each have their own bathrooms, a large kitchen, spacious living room, a dining room with a table that can fit a dozen people easily and the most beautiful garden in the back. I spent most of my time in the garden when we would visit during my childhood. My aunt opens the door to my room and I’m pleased to see the colors are neutral and not overly feminine. We place my bags on the bench at the foot of the bed and say our goodnights. I don’t even bother to change before crashing on the bed and getting lost in my thoughts.

I know I can’t do anything to make things change or to make things better, but being around my mom and her insistence that I just grow up and get over it really has taken a toll on me. I didn’t ask for this, for any of it. I didn’t ask to be lied to, manipulated and betrayed. I didn’t ask for my mate to reject me. I didn’t ask for my heart to be ripped out, torn to shreds then set on fire until it was reduced to ash. I didn’t ask to be forced to endure the soul crushing pain of seeing my former mate with the wolf he chose over me, the one he decided was more worthy than me. As with every night since that fateful day, I allow myself to cry until I have nothing left and finally succumb to the exhaustion of the day.

Chapter 2

My mother left for home just before eight am and I’m left to be smothered by my aunt and am finding myself wondering if this was such a good idea after all. We just finished our breakfast when she begins her onslaught of questions.

“Omara, I know things have been hard back home, but how are you feeling now that you’ve had time for things to really sink in?” I try to keep my tone in check as I respond.

“I feel like my heart was ripped from my chest, set on fire and it continues to burn with the intensity of a thousand suns.” I notice the saddened expression on her face and almost feel bad for how I responded.

“Our neighbor’s son is going to take you on a tour of the town around nine. I know you’ve been here before, but a lot has changed since your last visit. This evening, we’ll be having dinner with the Alpha and his ranking members. He likes to meet all newcomers personally.” I nod, not interested in her dinner plans, or in being a part of them, but not wanting to ruffle her feathers too much on my first day here either.

“Ok. Is there a dress code for this dinner?” She smiles and shakes her head softly.

“Just wear a nice pair of jeans and a clean shirt. The new alpha isn’t big on formalities. The only exception being the pack celebrations. You’ll be here for the spring ball, so we’ll have to get you a dress made for it, but that’s a few weeks away still.” I nod again, hoping our conversation is almost through.

“What’s the name of my escort for today?” My attempt at a distraction from the tedious conversation clearly works. She smiles ear to ear and takes a seat in the chair beside me.

“His name is Blaine. He’s a very sweet boy, but he can be a little shy. You should go get ready, he’ll be here soon.” I welcome the invitation to leave and quickly head to my room, easily deciding that this Blaine guy can’t be worse than everyone else who’s already tried to fix me. I slide on a pair of stone washed skinny jeans, a burgundy t-shirt with a v-cut neck and my black and white converse shoes. I decide to pull my long white hair into a braid then throw on mascara and eye liner before deciding I’m done. I stare in the mirror and feel a sharp pain in my chest as I study the features that Kyle had once told me he loved so much, but it turns out he only said what he needed to in order for me to agree to mate with him, though he never planned to mark me. Once he got what he wanted, he rejected me and moved on without looking back.

My white hair and pale turquoise eyes have always made me stand out among my people, all of whom have darker hair and most of them have brown eyes. The differences that made me stand out are why I always wore hoodies and hid everything unique about myself away. My mother attributed my unique looks to recessive genes, but I’ve always seen it as a curse. I spent most days hidden behind hoodies and loose fit clothing. As if my pale hair and eyes weren’t enough to set me apart, I’m also shorter and thinner than everyone else in my pack. I quickly blink away my tears as a knock on the front door echoes through the house. I slowly exit my room and walk down the hall where I can hear my aunt talking to someone, presumably Blaine.

“She should be ready any moment now. We really appreciate you taking time to show her around.” Her voice is light and I can easily tell she’s smiling.

“It’s my pleasure, Avery.” I step beyond the hall and watch as my aunt whips around then places a hand over her heart and sighs with a huge smile on her face.

“Omara, this is Blaine. Blaine, this is my niece Omara.” He steps closer to me and extends his hand which I politely take for a friendly, though admittedly awkward handshake.

“It’s great to meet you, Omara. Your aunt has told me so much about you.” I smile, a forced one, but he seems to not be bothered by it.

“It’s good to meet you as well.” He walks back toward the door and stops just before stepping onto the porch.

“Shall we?” I nod and give my aunt a quick hug before walking out the door with Blaine at my side. My wolf, Kira, seems intrigued by this wolf, but all I can think is that I want nothing more to do with being around unmated males.

“So, how did you get stuck with the job of being my tour guide?” He chuckles and gives me an amused smile.

“Your aunt asked and I agreed. Where are you from?” I smile at the simplicity and ease of our conversation, something that generally doesn’t come easy for me these days.

“White Crest.” He nods, but the look on his face tells me he wasn’t expecting my response, probably because of the distance between the two packs.

“What brought you up to Ember Ridge?” I figure this is the chance to make it known that I’m not interested in whatever kind of set up my aunt may be trying to arrange with this little outing of ours.

“My mate rejected me and my family thought it would be good for me to get away since I’ve been having hard time moving past it.” His brow rises and he shakes his head slowly.

“Shit, I’m sorry. Some people don’t realize that rejection isn’t something you just get over. It’s like having a piece of yourself die. It’s been my experience that you don’t get over it, but you do learn to live with it.” I stop walking and stare at him, suddenly realizing why my aunt wanted me to meet him.

“You were rejected?” He nods with a soft smile that’s incapable of masking his pain.

“Last year. It still hurts, but now the pain is just in the background. It no longer cripples me. The pack doctor said that finding a second chance mate will cause the pain to subside completely, but I don’t know that I’m interested in finding one.” It’s like he’s in my head and it’s a mild comfort to know that someone else can understand what I’m feeling.

“That’s what I keep trying to tell everyone! My mother said I should open myself up to the possibility of finding happiness, but after living with this pain, I don’t know that I’d be willing to risk being rejected again.” He puts an arm around my shoulders and nods his agreement.

“What was your mates name?” I take a deep breath and practically choke out the name I haven’t spoken out loud since the day I was rejected.

“Kyle. Yours?” His forced smile completely vanishes and his voice carries an unbearable grief.

“Jacob.” We both stop walking, feeling the weight of our heartache bearing down on us. He pulls me into his arms and we both break down into a sobbing mess in the middle of the sidewalk. It takes several minutes for us to regain our composure, wiping away tears and taking steady breaths.

“I see why my aunt wanted me to meet you. I honestly thought she was trying to set me up.” He chuckles and shakes his head at me.

“You seem like an amazing girl, but I play for the other team. I can say, your mate was a blind asshole for rejecting you. You’re a beautiful woman.” I smile and take a long look at him. His skin is a perfect golden tan, his hair a medium brown and his eyes are like pools of honey. He has a muscular build and is fairly tall, all-in-all, he’s the whole package.

“I can say the same about yours.” We return to walking the town with him pointing out several shops and a few restaurants that I don’t remember being here during my last visit. We end up stopping for lunch at a small diner before he walks me back home.

“Omara, I must say it actually was great getting to spend the day with you. Maybe we can hang out again soon.” I nod enthusiastically.

“I would really like that, thank you.” I watch him walk away before heading inside and finding my aunt waiting eagerly just inside the door.

“So?” I smile and pull her tightly in my arms.

“Thank you.” She pats my back softly and squeezes me tight.

“Sometimes it helps just to know we aren’t alone.” Even with all my frustration this morning, I couldn’t be more thankful for this woman than I am right now.

“You’re a pretty amazing woman, you know that?” She chuckles and steps back with a smile on her face.

“That’s what your uncle tells me every day. You should freshen up before dinner. We leave in thirty minutes.” I nod and make my way to my room to touch up my eyeliner and mascara that’s a wreck after my sobbing fit. I make my way to the foyer when I hear my aunt call my name and find her and my uncle patiently waiting for me by the door.

“You look beautiful, Omara.” My uncle praises with a warm smile on his face.

“Thank you. So, is the new alpha stuck up or easy going?” They both laugh as if that’s the craziest thing they’ve been asked in ages.

“He’s very nice, but firm. No need to be nervous about meeting him.” We exit the house and climb into my uncle’s car then drive off toward what I assume will be the main pack house.

Chapter 3

It’s almost seven and the evening sun is sinking low and setting the sky ablaze with bright shades of pink, orange and yellow. I almost forgot how beautiful the sunsets are here. I see an unreasonably large building coming into view through the front windshield and I’m pretty sure my mouth is gaping open in shock the closer we get. The large log cabin style building is two floors with a balcony that runs the length of the entire second floor. I see the golden glow of the lights in the windows that makes it seem inviting and warm. In all the times I visited here, I never did visit the pack house.

The car pulls up in front of the house and my aunt climbs out, gesturing for me to follow her. As soon as I close the door, my uncle drives off to park the car before returning to us and approaching the house. As we walk toward the steps to the front door, I get a strange feeling of being watched, but with a quick glance around, I can’t find the source. A guard at the door opens it as we approach, flashing a kind smile as we walk past him. If I thought the outside of this house was impressive, the inside is unbelievable! The vaulted ceiling in the foyer has a large crystal chandelier hanging that casts a calming light on the beautiful dark hardwood floors. The walls are natural wood and are covered in pictures of pack members at what look like gatherings. I’m scanning over the pictures when my uncle clears his throat behind me.

“Omara? This is Alpha Tristan.” I turn to see a ridiculously tall man with broad shoulders, a muscular build, jet black hair that’s medium length and hangs loosely around his face where his dark green eyes lie, framed by a set of long, thick eye lashes. Those green eyes are focusing on me and the weight of his stare is intense, holding a greater command than that of the alpha of my own pack. I feel myself growing uncomfortable and quickly rush out a greeting in an attempt to ease the tension.

“Hello, Alpha Tristan. It’s a pleasure to meet you. Thank you so much for allowing me to visit your pack.” He nods slightly, but his eyes never leave mine.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you as well, Omara. Please, follow me. Dinner will be served shortly.” We all follow the alpha to a large dining room with a crescent shaped table. I notice the many wooden chairs around the table with one much more extravagant chair at the center. He motions for us to follow him to our seats which, as it would happen, are right next to his. My aunt and uncle take the second and third seat down from his, leaving me sitting right next to the alpha with his strange and overwhelming stare. I lower myself into my chair, cross my legs and clasp my hand in my lap.

“So, Omara, your aunt was telling me that you’re from the White Crest pack.” I nod and smile nervously.

“Yes, sir.” I hear a strange rumble vibrate through his chest…a growl?

“What made you want to come visit?” I sigh loudly and decide that I might as well relay my story and I speak loud enough that the people who’ve joined us at the table can hear as well.

“My mate rejected me and rather than suffering in soul shattering agony as he dangles his chosen mate in front of me, my parents and I thought it would be best for me to visit my aunt and uncle so I could have a chance to find some kind of peace.” I look over and see his eyes glowing and it’s the most unnerving thing I’ve ever seen. He turns his head away for a moment before returning his eyes to mine, but they’re back to the piercing green from when I first saw him.

“I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what you had to endure.” I shrug softly and lower my head, my eyes fixed on my hands in my lap.

“No, sir. You can’t.” My aunt nudges me in my side in warning.

“I find your honesty refreshing. How long before you return to your pack?” I glance over at my aunt as I speak the words I haven’t yet said out loud to anyone.

“I’m not. I plan to take some time to figure things out and hopefully I’ll find a place that feels like home.” I feel my aunt and uncle’s eyes on me, but I refuse to meet their gaze.

“You’re welcome to stay here as long as you’d like. We can help find you work and even get you into your own place if you’d like. You’re over eighteen I assume.” I nod, knowing full well that he knows I am since we don’t find our mates until the age of eighteen.

“I’ll be nineteen in four months.” Our conversation is thankfully cut short as the wait staff carry out our plates and set them in front of us. I stare at the medium rare steak on my plate with a side salad then glance around the room to see everyone already diving in, but I refrain from touching my meal until the alpha begins to eat. He seems to notice my actions and I can feel him studying me closely as I finally take my first bite once he begins chewing his. The others are carrying on loud conversations, many chewing with their mouths open, a nasty habit that I truly can’t stand, but I bite my tongue and continue to eat in silence. When I reach the point where I feel I’ve eaten enough, I slide my plate forward and take my glass of water, sipping it slowly as I wait for the awkward and unpleasant pack dinner to come to an end. I notice the wait staff clearing plates as another group brings out dessert.

“Alpha, may I please be excused?” Before he can speak, my aunt quietly scolds me for my ‘rude’ behavior.

“Omara! We’re guests here and you’re trying to leave early? The dinner’s almost over!” I’m about to lose my temper when Alpha Tristan speaks to my defense.

“She was very polite about her request and this is likely overwhelming for her. I take no offense, none at all. Yes, Omara. You certainly may be excused. Allow me to escort you to the garden. Perhaps it would be more peaceful for you there.” I rise from my seat and step aside to allow the alpha to get by then follow him out of the crowded dining hall, through a long corridor and out a set of large French doors. The cool spring breeze gently caresses my face and I instantly feel the tension in my body ease. My eyes close involuntarily as I allow the energy of the moon to course through me like waves on the shore. I exhale slowly, feeling more centered and slowly open my eyes. The alpha is staring with a curious expression as I walk toward him then continue to walk further, my feet guiding me to the garden I can see just ahead. The scent of lilacs, lilies, marigolds, roses and honey suckle float heavily in the air and it’s intoxicating.

“Who are your parents?” I stop, almost having forgotten that the alpha was still out here with me.

“Olivia and Daniel McFae of the White Crest pack.” I slowly bend down, inhaling the fragrance of the roses in front of me.

“Are others in your pack like you?” I turn to him with a raised brow and a smirk on my face.

“Like me? You mean rejected? No.” He chuckles nervously and shakes his head.

“I mean the way you look. I’ve never met a wolf that looks like you and the members of your pack that I have met all shared the same characteristics. Dark hair, olive skin and dark eyes.” I sigh softly and shrug my shoulders.

“None of the others are like me. My mother blames recessive genes, but I believe I’m cursed. Why else would I have been created to look so different and have to suffer being rejected if not for being cursed?” He steps closer and draws a deep breath.

“I don’t believe you’re cursed, Omara. I believe that your mate was too ignorant and too blind to see what a blessing the goddess had given him. There’s something strangely intriguing about you.” I stand up straight and tilt my head slightly.

“Intriguing?” He nods and smiles warmly.

“Very intriguing.” I shrug and begin walking slowly, slipping deeper into the garden.

“I’ve been called many things in my life, but intriguing is a new one.” I see a stone bench and slowly make my way to it, lowering myself onto the cold surface and breathing deeply, allowing the mixture of smells to permeate my senses.

“What of your alpha? Did he do nothing to ease your suffering through your rejection?” I sigh softly and slowly shake my head.

“My alpha is…I honestly can’t find a polite word to describe him.” His next words surprise me greatly.

“Then use an impolite word. Speak freely, Omara.” I smile wide and chuckle softly.

“My alpha is a callous, arrogant, self-righteous dick.” He chuckles loudly.

“Not pulling any punches I see.” I let my smile linger and let out a weighted breath.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have spoken poorly of Alpha Andros.” He places a hand on my shoulder and a shiver shoots down my spine from the unexpected contact.

“Don’t apologize. If he were a good alpha, his pack would have no reason to speak poorly of him. Besides, I’ve met Alpha Andros and he really is a dick.” We both burst out laughing only to be interrupted by my aunt’s voice calling out to me from the porch.

“Omara?! We’re getting ready to leave!” I stand and turn to the alpha with a warm smile.

“Thank you for dinner and for the reprieve from said dinner.” He chuckles and takes my hand in his, raising it to his lips and softly kissing the back of it, my body shivering once again from the contact.

“It really was a pleasure. Be safe, Omara.” I nod and return to my family to go home.

Chapter 4

I’ve spent almost every day with Blaine and have found it strangely comforting to have someone I can talk to who doesn’t treat me like I’m overreacting. After trying so hard to get my mom to understand and failing to get through to her, it’s nice to have someone I can just open up to without judgement and without having to worry that they’ll feel that my feelings aren’t justified. We’ve had a lot of enjoyable conversations and I can say without a doubt that he’s the first true friend I’ve ever had.

Today he took me for a walk and then to the pack library and I’ve been skimming through books on wolf bloodlines for the last hour, though I’m not entirely sure of what it is I’m looking for. I don’t know what I had hoped to find, but even my wolf seems pretty insistent that we try to figure out more about where we come from. Maybe I’m hoping for answers about why I’m so different, or maybe I hope to find something that will make me feel like less of an outcast.

“Omara, I need to go help my mom with some things. Were you wanting to walk back, or did you have more reading you’d like to do?” Blaine gives me a playful smile, clearly already knowing my answer.

“I’d like to research a few more things, but if you want me to walk with you I can. I can always just come back here tomorrow.” He gives me a quick hug and shakes his head.

“I think I’ll survive the walk home alone. If you need me to come get you later, just let your aunt know.” I smile and quickly nod my agreement. He leaves me alone to delve deeper into the ancient bloodlines, seeking insight into my own line, though nothing I’ve found so far has provided me with answers.

After my talk with the alpha, I realized that he was onto something. I’ve never once seen another wolf like me and if my mother was right about it being recessive genes, then there’ll be others like me in our family line. It’s been three hours since I got here and I’m staring blankly at a book that’s proven to be yet another dead end. My eyes are burning and my brain is overwhelmed by all the useless knowledge I’ve flooded it with since I arrived here.

“Hard at work studying your family’s history I see.” The deep commanding voice floats from behind me, the authority in his tone undeniable.

“I was trying to find the records of my family’s bloodline, but it’s like finding a needle in a haystack, or maybe a needle in a needle stack would be more accurate.” I huff out in a frustrated tone as I shove the current book away from me. I hate to admit defeat, but I’ve searched through every book here that could possibly contain information that would be useful, but not a single one mentions anything about my family’s line containing strange ancestors like me.

“You said your family’s last name is McFae, right?” I nod and watch as he walks past me and begins searching the bookshelf on the other side of the table I’m sitting at, the bookshelf I already scoured over an hour ago. He pulls out a book, flips through several pages then sets the book in front of me while pointing at a tree with the name McFae above it.

“I saw that one, but there’s nothing of use in it. I also looked for my mother’s bloodline, thinking maybe the traits I ended up with came from her side, but hers doesn’t have anything useful either.” He walks over and sits on the edge of the table, a clearly thoughtful look firmly taking over hi handsome face.

“I can send a request to the council for their head of the genealogy department to look into it for you. It might take a little while for them to get back to us though and we can even submit a DNA sample for analysis.” Well, it’s not like I haven’t already exhausted all my other options here, so I don’t really have much to lose.

“I would really appreciate it. I honestly don’t even know why this feels so important to me, but I just feel like I need to know.” I’m not sure it makes sense to him, but he does nod his head in agreement.

“Alright, well, lets go to the elder’s office and submit the request.” I follow him out of the library and down the street for about two blocks, stopping in front of an older building that resembles a courthouse.

“This is Elder Taurou’s, he’s our pack historian. He works very closely with the council and was personally responsible for aiding the genealogy department in documenting the family history for the members of our pack some thirty years ago.” We walk up the stone steps and the alpha knocks loudly before opening the door. We walk in and I take in the sight of thousands of books randomly stacked and scattered throughout. As we walk into what I assume is the living room, an elderly man with white hair and glossy brown eyes steps out of a room to the left.

“Alpha Tristan, to what do I owe the honor?” Tristan steps closer and motions for me to come to him.

“This is Omara McFae. She wishes to learn about her family’s bloodlines, but we’ve hit a dead end with the records in the library, so I was hoping you could help submit a request to the council for them to search her family’s bloodline and get us anything they can find.” The elderly man steps closer to me and I see a spark of something in his eyes as they go wide.

“You are a unique young wolf, aren’t you? Let’s go fill out the forms and I’ll send them right over. We should hear something back in a week or so.” We spend almost an hour filling out the request then getting a DNA sample then leave the elder’s office after he promises to have everything sent off right away.

“I understand wanting to know more about who you are and learning more about your ancestors, but is there something specific you’re looking to learn from this?” I shrug my shoulders, unsure of why I feel so damn driven to dig deeper into my family’s origins.

“I…I don’t know if it’s something specific, per se. I just…I guess I kind of hope that I’ll find some answers about why I’m so different. Maybe I can stop feeling like a walking curse if I know I’m not the only one like me.”He nods his head, though I’m not sure if it’s in acknowledgement or understanding.

“I still don’t think you’re cursed, Omara. I believe the goddess has a plan for you and will reveal the path when the time is right.” I can tell he believes what he’s saying, but it’s just really hard for me to see it.

“Well, I hope you’re right. Surviving this crap just to find out that this is all my life was meant to amount to…it would really suck.” He gives me a sad smile, but nods.

“Well, I can’t say I disagree, but I don’t think this is the plot of your story, just the end of a chapter. When it’s time, you’ll turn the page and that’s when the real story will begin.” He always speaks with such conviction…such certainty. While I may not be inclined to believe what he’s saying, part of me really wants to.

“Who knows, maybe you’re right. Maybe the information the council finds will help start the next chapter.” I’m trying to be positive, goddess, how I’m trying!

“Well, I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they find. Come on, why don’t you let me drive you home.” I nod then reluctantly follow the alpha to a car that’s parked in front of the library, climbing in and silently contemplating the natural disaster that is my life. We arrive at my aunt’s house and before I climb out, I turn toward him, not meeting his eyes.

“Thank you, Alpha Tristan.” He grabs my hand before I can slide out and another icy chill runs down my spine.

“You’re meant to be so much more than the pain you carry. I don’t know why you’ve had to suffer so much, but I do know that you’re destined for something much greater.” He releases my hand and I feel him watching me as I exit his car and walk into my aunt’s house. As I lay in my bed, thinking of what I might learn from the council and what the alpha had said to me, I drift to sleep where I’m greeted once again by the re-run of my memory of Kyle and the pain he caused me.

Chapter 5

It’s been two weeks since the elder submitted the request to the council for information about my family. I’ve visited the elder twice since then and he’s filled me in on some of the things the genealogy researcher has found, though none of it gave me answers about why I’m…me. After I last spoke with him two days ago, I felt myself losing hope…but then he requested that my aunt send me to see him an hour ago and now I’m in his office, waiting for him to finish making tea so he can tell me what he found out.

“I won’t bother wasting either of our time beating around the bush, young wolf. The research into the bloodlines didn’t yield any results, but the DNA test certainly did. You are a descendant of one of the most ancient bloodlines, the Onkuntarea, or Moon Born. It was believed that your bloodline had ended more than a century ago and yet, here you are. You’re a testament to the greatness of our goddess and the powers that she possesses. Your line was one of the greatest and I’m sure you have noticed that your wolf’s abilities are unlike any others. Your speed, strength, senses and perception are unmatched.

“I’m not sure who the people are that raised you, but I can assure you that they’re not your birth parents. With the council having nothing documented about your birth or you being adopted into your pack, there’s nothing I can do to provide answers for how you came to live among them. I think that, for now, you should give yourself time to come to terms with this new knowledge and after you have accepted the truth for what it is, perhaps then you can seek further answers from your adopted family.” I nod, thank him and then leave his home feeling more lost than when I had entered. I absentmindedly wander the streets, eventually finding a quiet little park where I drop down on the grass and lay looking up at the sky as my knowledge about myself and my family is blown away.

“Was he able to help you, or are you still waiting?” The deep commanding voice instantly pulls my attention and my eyes instinctively seek out his now familiar green ones.

“If by help, you mean completely left my world asunder, then yeah. He was a big help.” He slowly lowers himself onto the grass beside me with a look of concern on his face.

“So, not the information you had hoped for then?” I sit up, pull my knees to my chest and wrap my arms around them.

“You can say that. I definitely wasn’t expecting to find out that my family has lied to me my entire life and they’re not actually my family at all. Oh, and the icing on this fucked up cake…I’m apparently the last of my bloodline.” The tone of my voice is sheer chaos as my confusion, anger, hurt and sadness spiral out of control, each fighting for dominance inside me.

“Is he sure you’re the last? Maybe there are others, I mean, the world is a pretty big place after all.” I drop my forehead onto my knees and let out a soft sigh.

“He seemed pretty damn sure.” There’s a brief and awkward silence between us that feels like it stretches on forever before he finally speaks.

“Did he have any other information for you? Did he give you answers to any of your questions?” I lift my head and look at him, feeling completely and utterly defeated.

“He told me to give myself time to process the information and then suggested I seek further answers from my family. It’s not that he didn’t give me any answers, but the few he was able to give me only left me with even more questions.” I rise to my feet and give him a weak smirk.

“And you said I wasn’t cursed.” He stands up, brushes off his pants and lets out a heavy sigh.

“Well, I know you don’t agree, but I still don’t think you’re cursed. Maybe they had a good reason to keep this from you. Don’t hate them until you know everything. Come, let me take you home.”

It’s been a few days since my world was turned upside down by the information from the council, but I still can’t bring myself to tell my family that I know the truth now. Blaine has begun training with the guards and ever since his training began, his behavior has been very unusual, but then again, so has the alpha’s. In the last two days, Alpha Tristan has managed to show up almost every time I’ve left the house and he seems to spend an unusual amount of time with me, even when we aren’t really talking or doing anything.

Tonight is the pack’s spring full moon celebration and my aunt has been quite insistent that I need to attend, but finally compromised with me. I agreed to attend the celebration so long as she agreed to allow me to shift alone. While most of the pack knows of my reason for being here, there are many things they don’t know and I aim to keep it that way, at least for now.

I can feel Kira stirring just beneath the surface and, if I’m being honest, I’m having a hard time reeling her in. She always gets a little worked up around the full moon, but it’s never been anything like this. It’s honestly taking everything in me just to keep her at bay. I know it’s been a while since I’ve let her run, but until tonight, she hasn’t really shown any desire to, so I thought she was fine. As she lets out a whimper followed by howl in my head, I realize she might not be as fine as I had let myself believe she was.

I stand in front of the full-length mirror in my room and admire the gown my aunt picked out for the celebration, the sight of it even buying a moment of reprieve from Kira’s torment. It’s an ankle length dark teal gown with a satin corset top with flowing satin that hangs loosely from my hips to my ankles. She chose a pair of black sandals because she knows that I’ll likely spend most of my time barefoot anyways since the event is taking place in the grassy area between the pack house and the garden.

As I think of the amount of consideration she’s put into this, it’s then that I realize that she may not be my blood, but this woman is definitely my family. I double-check my hair and makeup, my braid is perfect and my eyeliner and mascara make my eyes stand out perfectly, only further enhanced by the color of my dress. I walk out of my room and head toward the voices in the foyer, but freeze the moment I see the one person who has always been home to me.

“Liam?!” I shout as I rush to him, throwing my arms around his neck as he wraps his around my waist and gives me a bone crushing hug.

“Goddess, I’ve missed you, O.” I pull away and take in his appearance. He’s wearing a black suit with a tie the same color as my dress, our Aunt Avery’s doing no doubt.

“What are you doing here? I thought you were supposed to be doing training for the next few months?” He smiles and kisses my forehead just like he always does.

“I had a little help. I wanted to be here for you during your first shift here. I already knew that when you left, you wouldn’t be coming back, so I wanted to spend some time with you and this gave me the perfect excuse.” I hear the sadness in his voice and it crushes me.

“I wanted to tell you, Liam. I’m so sorry, but I just can’t be there anymore. I can’t force myself to suffer through that hell anymore.” He smiles then places his hand softly on my cheek.

“I know and I understand, O. If this is what you need to do, I one hundred percent have your back.” He gives me a reassuring smile, the same smile he’s given me anytime I needed comfort.

“Wait, you said you had help?” I look at my aunt and uncle who quickly shake their heads, so I look at Liam in confusion.

“Alpha Tristan contacted me. He made all the arrangements for me to come. He’s clearly a better alpha than ours, that’s for sure.” I couldn’t agree with his statement more.

“Ok, you two. We need to get going or we’ll be late.” We all hurry out to my uncle’s car and leave for the pack house.

Chapter 6

We pull up to the house and find a place to park among the sea of cars then make our way toward the crowds of people standing around the inside of the pack house. Liam is the ever-caring brother and makes sure he’s always at my side as we follow the people through the packhouse and out to the yard behind it that’s beautifully lit with fairy lights and hanging lanterns.

Neither Liam nor I have ever seen such a celebration and are frozen in place as we take in the beauty of it all. White Crest has monthly pack gatherings, but they’re nothing like this! Liam grabs my hand then wraps my arm around his and leads me toward the table where our aunt and uncle are taking a seat, even going as far as pulling my chair out for me just like the gentleman he is.

I can feel people staring at me, but with Liam by my side, I have the strength to ignore them and choose to instead focus my attention on trying to enjoy my time with him. Everyone enjoys the food and there’s a DJ playing music while people dance. The song When I See You Smile by Bad English comes on and I see Liam’s face light up, obviously remembering the many times we danced to this very song when we were just pups as it was one of our mom’s favorites.

“Let’s dance, O.” Liam takes my hand and drags me to the grassy area just beyond the tables where several other members of the pack are dancing. He places one hand on my waist and the other holds mine as he guides me. I’ve never much been one to dance, but Liam always manages to persuade me. As the song comes to an end, I notice Liam’s eyes shift to something behind me and he smiles warmly.

“Might I have the next dance?” The deep commanding voice has goosebumps pricking at my flesh and I turn to find the deep green eyes of Alpha Tristan. Liam gently kisses my cheek and bows slightly to the alpha before returning to the table. The alpha places both of his hands on my hips and I hesitantly place mine on his shoulders as we begin to move to yet another slow song that I vaguely remember from my younger years with my mom and dad.

“I’d like to thank you for helping to bring my brother here. You didn’t have to, but I appreciate it so much more than you know. It really means a lot to me.” He smiles and it sends a surge of warmth through me that has my cheeks flushing.

“I thought it might help for you to have someone you’re comfortable with here when you shift with us for the first time.” I feel a pang of guilt as I realize he was expecting me to shift with the rest of the pack, but that’s something I’m definitely not ready for.

“Alpha, I won’t be shifting with the pack tonight. Liam and I have found a place not far from here where we’ll be letting our wolves run. I don’t mean to be disrespectful or to seem ungrateful, but I would honestly feel more comfortable if I didn’t have the eyes of the entire pack on my wolf for now.” I see the disappointment in his eyes, but his smile tries to hide it.

“If that’s what would make you most comfortable, then I’ll respect your decision. Just know that no one here will look down on you for your differences. Many of the pack are curious about you, but they don’t fear you and they won’t shame you.” I find comfort in his words, but it doesn’t sway my decision.

“Your people have been kind to me, unlike my own. I…” I’m cut off when an unfamiliar and altogether unpleasant scent seeps into the air around me. It smells of rot and decay with a faint undertone of blood. The alpha shakes my focus when he places a hand on my cheek, turning my eyes to him, but the smell is growing stronger by the second.

“What’s wrong?” Kira is now scratching at the surface and is close to breaking free. She’s seconds away from taking over and in this moment, one thing is clear to me…I need to go, I need to run. What the fuck is that goddess awful smell?!

“You can’t smell that?” He draws in a deep breath then looks at me with confusion in his eyes as he slowly shakes his head.

“I don’t smell anything, Omara. What…” He freezes in place as the last of my control slips and Kira takes hold, shifting in a matter of seconds and tearing off into the woods, running toward the stench. Why the fuck is she running toward it?!

‘Kira! What are you doing?! We need to go the other way!’

‘Blaine, he’s in trouble. Must help.’

I immediately fall silent and take to watching our surroundings as the scent becomes stronger. Kira lets out a guttural growl as a figure comes into view in the distance. The closer we get, the more I can make out the features of a large man who’s filthy and it’s clear that he’s the source of the stench of rot and decay. As we draw closer, I see a body curled up on the ground in front of him and can hear the weak heartbeat which sends Kira into a frenzy. She lunges at the large man, sinking her teeth into his throat and shaking her head violently until his neck snaps. She quickly drops him and moves over to where Blaine’s weak and bloodied body lies on the ground and begins to nuzzle him in an attempt to help him regain consciousness.

Another scent wafts through the air, the smell of pine and cloves. Kira stands over Blaine and growls menacingly as a large black wolf emerges from the brush. The wolf is large even by werewolf standards and as soon as I see his eyes, I know it’s Alpha Tristan, but Kira’s not backing down. She slams her front paw into the ground and snarls as he steps closer, causing him to pause. I watch in wonder as the large black wolf slowly bows its head to her. The sound of movement beneath her breaks her focus and a hand gently brushes across the fur on her neck. She looks down and stares softly into the bloodshot eyes of Blaine.

“You saved me.” His voice is so weak, but it’s music to our ears. Kira positions herself on the ground beside him and allows him to pull himself onto her back then carefully stands and begins walking back to the town to get him to the pack doctor. The alpha follows closely behind us, and it takes us less than twenty minutes to arrive at the hospital.

When we arrive at the hospital, the alpha shifts first and helps lift Blaine off my back then carries him into the hospital while Kira follows behind. She’s keeping me pushed back, protecting me as she always has, even though I let her know we’re safe here. She stops in front of a large floor to ceiling window where we can see our reflection and she stares at the sight of our once pearlescent fur that’s now saturated with the blood of our friend. She finally proceeds down the hall, following Blaine’s scent until we reach his room where the alpha and another man are tending to Blaine’s wounds. After a moment, the alpha looks at us and slowly walks toward us, kneeling a few feet away.

“It’s ok, you’re safe here. You can let Omara come back now.” Kira huffs and shakes her head defiantly. “You saved Blaine’s life.” He slowly stretches out his arm, holding his hand out to her. Kira lowers her head slightly and leans her head against his hand, allowing him to run his fingers through her fur.

“Omara?” The sound of our name from Blaine’s broken, but familiar voice makes her pull away from the alpha as she makes her way to the side of the bed where Blaine is now reaching out to her. She nuzzles his hand and lets out a low whine. “Thank you.”

Chapter 7

Blaine has just fallen asleep when a loud, thundering voice shouts from somewhere down the hall and Kira whips around and takes off toward it. It’s the one voice that can talk her down and convince her to give me control again…the voice of my amazing brother, Liam.

“Omara?! O?!” Liam stands near the entrance looking frantic and Kira rushes to him, jumping forward and into his arms, nearly knocking him over as he falls back against the wall to brace himself.

“Oh, goddess, Kira! Are you hurt? What happened?!” She licks at his face as he slowly slides his arms off of her and inspects her for injuries, but I see his relief when he finds none.

“The blood isn’t hers. She saved one of our people and killed a rogue. By all accounts, she’s a hero in the eyes of our pack.” The deep commanding voice of the alpha calls out from the hallway and his praise has Kira standing tall.

“Kira, it’s safe now. Please let Omara come back. I promise you that you both are safe. I won’t let anyone hurt her.” She stares into Liam’s eyes and I feel her retreating and pushing me forward as Liam grabs a white coat off the hook by the door and places it over me. I’m on my knees on the cold hospital floor as Liam pulls me to him, hugging me tighter than ever.

“O, we should go get you cleaned up. You’re looking a little like a serial killer right now.” I chuckle softly and nod at him.

“Omara, my people owe you a great deal. You not only saved Blaine tonight, but likely many others as well.” I shake my head and lower my gaze to the floor, hoping like hell that he can’t see how red my cheeks are.

“I was only doing what I needed to in order to save my friend. I’m going to go get cleaned up.” Liam grabs my arm and gives me a strange look that has my brow furrowing.

“If Avery sees you like this…she’ll lose it, O. She’ll absolutely go ape shit.” I let out a sigh knowing he’s right.

“Let me take you to my place. You can get cleaned up there.” I look at the alpha with a confused look and I know that when I respond, my voice will only further convey my confusion.

“Going to the packhouse where your entire pack is currently gathered isn’t really an ideal plan, alpha.” He walks over and places a hand on my shoulder while flashing me an amused smirk.

“I don’t live at the packhouse, Omara. Come with me. Liam, will you let your aunt and uncle know that she’s ok?” Liam nods and we all exit the hospital. Alpha Tristan leads me to his black town car where a driver is waiting for us and opens the door for me, but I stop and stare at him in disbelief.

“I’m going to get blood all over your seat, alpha.” He chuckles as he gently grabs my arm and guides me in.

“It won’t be the first time and please, when we’re alone, call me Tristan.” I make myself comfortable and buckle the seat belt with Tristan getting in on the other side before the car takes off. We drive through town and turn just before the pack house, following a well-maintained dirt road that leads up a small hill to the side of the pack house and stop at a large log cabin that’s slightly bigger than my aunt’s home, but not by too much. Tristan helps me out of the car and leads me into the house that’s only lit by the light of the full moon shining through the multiple sky lights. He guides me down a short hallway and pushes open a door to a large bedroom then walks through a door on the left side, flipping on a light to reveal a large ensuite with a long counter with two sinks, a full length mirror, a large tub that could easily fit four people and a separate shower that’s the size of a walk in closet and has multiple shower heads.

“I don’t have any feminine scented soap, but it’ll at least get you clean.” I chuckle and shake my head, honestly unconcerned with the fact that I’ll be smelling more like a male than a female for a bit. It sure beats being covered in dry blood and dirt.

“I’m sure I’ll be fine. I may walk around smelling like you for a short time, but at least I won’t be covered in blood.” He smiles and nods then turns and walks out of the room, leaving me to get cleaned up. I take my time cleaning the blood off of me and enjoy the feel of the water beating down on my skin, easing the tension in my muscles. When I finally exit the shower, I find a t-shirt and a pair of track shorts sitting on the counter, so I dry off and get dressed then exit the room to search for Tristan. I hear noise down the hall and follow it to a large kitchen where Tristan is standing, making coffee. He turns as I enter the room and smiles warmly, which has me blushing yet again for reasons that I don’t understand. I’ve never been a shy person, but I can’t seem to stop blushing!

“You look much better, Omara. Do you drink coffee?” I slowly walk to the island in the center of the kitchen and lean forward on it.

“Yes, black please.” He looks surprised by my answer, but grabs a cup and pours the coffee then slides it over to me.

“I see why you were concerned with the others seeing you shift, but I can assure you, the only thing the pack felt when they saw your wolf was awe.” I take a greedy drink from my mug, savoring the slightly bitter taste before swallowing and praying like hell that he can’t see the blush that’s returning to my cheeks for the umpteenth time.

“I’m sorry you had to find out the way you did. I wasn’t sure how to even go about telling you about her.” He walks over to me and leans on the counter beside me.

“You have nothing to apologize for. You saved one of my people, possibly more. I’ve never seen someone shift that fast and your wolf…she’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Her color and size are remarkable to say the least.” I smile at his complimenting words and Kira seems pleased to hear them as well.

“She certainly is a remarkable creature.” He turns toward me, leaning on one elbow as he looks at me.

“You both are.” Before I can respond, there’s a knock on the door and he quickly exits the kitchen to answer it.

“I brought her phone and a change of clothes for her. Avery has had a bit too much to drink and is in a panic. I told her that Omara will be staying with Blaine at the hospital. I doubt she wants our aunt to be smothering her right now.” I walk out to the foyer to see Liam standing at the door. Wet strands of my white hair hang loosely around my face and a smile instantly finds its way to my face just at the sight of him.

“She can stay here for the night. I’ll take her to see Blaine in the morning.” Liam’s eyes shift from the alpha’s to mine and he smiles widely.

“O! You’re looking much less murdery.” We both chuckle as I make my way to him and pull him into a tight hug.

“Thank you.” He pulls back and gives me a strange look.

“For what?” I smile and tilt my head slightly.

“For handling aunty, for calming Kira and for being there for me like you always have, even though you didn’t have to.” I see the shift in his expression as it fades from confusion to resignation. Maybe it’s my tone, or maybe he sees something in my eyes, but I need him to know that I finally know the truth and I need him to know it’s okay.

“You know?” I nod softly, but my smile never fades.

“I do. You may not be my blood, but you are and will always be my brother. I love you Liam.” He pulls me tightly to him and kisses my temple.

“Blood doesn’t make a family, O, love does. I love you too.” He finally pulls away and leaves the house, looking back to smile and wave before disappearing down the hill.

“You’ll be staying in the guest room tonight and I’ll take you to see Blaine in the morning. Are you ok with that?” I nod and smile, finally feeling the recent chaos in my life starting to settle.

Chapter 8

Kira is acting rather strange, pushing forward even though I don’t currently feel the call of the moon pulling us and there’s no threat in sight. Tristan seems to notice my struggle as he steps closer and grabs my chin gently, tilting my head until his eyes are staring into mine.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what’s coming over Kira. Something has her worked up, but the little shit won’t tell me what’s wrong. She’s been like this all night, even before the pack celebration.” He studies me closely and I watch his eyes shift as flecks of gold appear and they begin to glow, his wolf is showing himself, yet this change somehow calms Kira and I feel her relax and slowly retreat.

“How? You aren’t my alpha, so how did you get her to respond to you?” He gives me a playful smile and softly shrugs his shoulders.

“It’s an alpha thing. Most alphas can calm other wolves.” I don’t call him on his lie, I wouldn’t even know what to say if I wanted to. An alpha has the ability to calm pack members who are bound to him through the pack bond, but not outsiders. He slowly leads me to the room beside the one where I showered and opens the door.

I step inside and while the room is beautiful, my eyes focus on the glass door that leads to a balcony overlooking a small cliff on this side of the house where the moon is shining brightly. My feet move of their own accord as I walk through the room and out the door, instantly feeling the energy of the full moon sinking into my flesh and pulsing through my veins. I feel his presence behind me, but he remains quiet as I bask in the warmth of the goddess’s energy.

My skin glows under her light and while I know he can see it, I don’t feel afraid as I normally would. Something about him seeing me, the real me, is comforting. It’s a relief to know that someone sees the side of me that I’ve hidden from everyone, even Liam, for my entire life. I don’t know why I feel so safe around him, like I know deep down that he won’t judge me…that he won’t hurt me. I turn to face him, not sure of what I’ll see, but the glow in his eyes tells me that he’s accepted what I am, or at least his wolf has. He takes a step closer, his eyes scanning my body as if he’s trying to understand what he’s seeing.

His fingertips graze the skin on my arm sending chills down my spine while his eyes follow the movements of his fingers with expert precision and a low growl rumbles out of him. I can tell by his eyes that his wolf is in control and while the thought of an alpha who’s lost control to his wolf should terrify me, I find myself intrigued.

“What’s your name wolf.” His eyes flash to mine and a deep growling voice answers me.

“Nuro.” His eyes remain on mine as he studies me closely.

“It’s an honor to meet you, Nuro.” I bow my head slightly, but he catches my chin and raises my head until our eyes meet again.

“The child of the goddess bows to no one.” I stare at him curiously, wondering what the hell he’s talking about.

“Do you know who I am…what I am?” He nods as the glow in his eyes intensifies while he flashes me a wolfish grin.

“All of my kind know of you. Our humans think you to be nothing more than a story in their history books. Your mother was the last of her kind until you came along and with her death, you are now the last. You are a miracle in a world that needs one. Can you not feel your connection to our goddess?” I nod my head, knowing I’ve always felt the connection, but never truly understood it. According to this wolf, I’m a child of the goddess, but I really don’t want to believe the goddess would let her child suffer through what I have. I know the elder said I’m moon born, but I’m not really sure what that means.

“Does Tristan know what I am?” He shakes his head firmly, no hesitation what-so-ever.

“My human suspects much, but knows little. Your kind were mated to mine to create a strong line of wolves, but over the centuries your kind were hunted down and exploited for your unparalleled skills. They were used as weapons to fight endless wars, wars that still rage on. They were created to be our salvation, but instead they were used as weapons of mass destruction. You hid yourself tonight, dulled your presence. You have lived in the shadows when you were meant to lead.” Kira is howling in appreciation, almost as if she had been waiting for this acknowledgement her whole life even though it’s something that I’m only learning about now. My wolf may feel vindicated in having Nuro acknowledge her apparently superior abilities, but I’m just not sold on it and now I’m finding myself with even more questions that I have a feeling won’t be getting answered.

“Nuro, I’m no leader.” His fingers gently trail down my cheek and neck until his hand is resting on my shoulder, a strange warmth surges through my skin where his hand rests.

“You may soon have no choice but to become one.” I watch the glow in his eyes fade until Tristan’s green eyes are staring back at me. He looks at the placement of his hand and slowly pulls away from me like a child caught touching something they weren’t supposed to.

“I’m sorry. Nuro forced himself forward and blocked me.” I give him a reassuring smile, not wanting to let on to how seriously messed up my conversation with his wolf side was and not sure if I should believe he didn’t witness any of it.

“There’s nothing to apologize for. He’s a very knowledgeable wolf.” He smirks and runs a hand through his hair, the action almost making him appear nervous. He’s a very handsome man, but this relaxed, almost nervous looking side of him is pretty damn adorable.

“He is, but he’s also a bit of a pain in the ass. Most people don’t dare talk to him. His alpha command is too strong for most people to withstand…except for you it seems.” I have a feeling that he’s alluding to the scene in the woods when Nuro bowed his head to me, but I won’t mention that incident because most alphas would find something like that to be humiliating.

“After the life I’ve lived, there’s little that I can’t withstand.” He gives me a sad, knowing grin as I walk past him and return to the room, taking a seat on the edge of the bed.

“I think you’re a lot stronger than you realize, Omara. I think the goddess has plans for you and I think very soon, you’ll figure out what those plans are.” He sounds so sure of this, but I really just can’t see it.

“Maybe, but whatever her plans are, they kind of suck. First, she pairs me with an ungrateful prick and then she stands by while he rejects me and turns me into a joke for the entire pack while letting me feel broken and worthless. Sounds like a shitty plan to me.” I know I sound like a whiny child and I damn well know I shouldn’t be cursing the goddess, but it’s hard not to be a little bitter about the whole thing.

“I understand that it all seems unfair right now, but I promise you that things will start looking up for you.” I really don’t want to discuss my misfortune with him anymore, so I decide to appease him for now.

“I hope you’re right, alpha.” He gives me another sad smile, clearly knowing I don’t believe him.

“I’ll leave and let you get some rest. Sleep well, Omara” He walks out of the room and I sit in confusion as Kira whimpers and paces in my mind. I lay down and stare at the ceiling while she paces back and forth until I finally feel sleep slipping in and dragging me under.

Chapter 9

Tristan held true to his word and took me to see Blaine first thing this morning. The doctor is releasing him to return home so Tristan is driving us back so I can help him settle in. Since last night, things seem different between Tristan and I. I feel both relief and indescribable tension in his presence. He says he was blocked when Nuro came forward, but I feel as if he knows more than he’s letting on. I try to remain focused on Blaine to help distract myself from needlessly worrying about the overload of information that I’ve had dumped on me and whether or not Tristan knows what Nuro said to me.

“You should go see your aunt. She’s probably worried sick about you.” Blaine growls out the words through his obvious discomfort as he lowers himself onto his couch. I bend down and kiss his forehead while I smile in amusement as he pouts like a child.

“You’re probably right. Call me if you need anything. I mean it.” He smiles and jokingly salutes me as I turn and leave with the alpha following me out.

“Do you need help with your aunt and uncle?” I find myself amused by what he’s offering, but shake my head.

“I can handle them, but if I’m not out in three days, send a search party.” We both laugh as I wave and walk to my aunt’s house next door. I walk in and before I can speak, my aunt has her arms around me.

“We were so worried! Are you ok? How’s Blaine?” She rambles out every word in a single breath.

“I’m ok. Blaine is healing nicely and is almost back to his old self. You don’t need to worry.” She pulls back and smiles softly.

“You smell…different.” I chuckle and nod, not doubting her statement in the slightest.

“Alpha Tristan let me shower at his house and all he had was his body wash. I would’ve come home, but I wanted to tend to Blaine as soon as I was cleaned up. I hope you’re not upset.” She places her hands on my cheeks in a loving gesture and shakes her head.

“We’re far from upset. We heard what you did for Blaine and we’re so very proud of you.” I’m not sure how to process her praise, so I simply smile and nod. In all my life, I’ve never had anyone other than Liam tell me that they were proud of me, even my parents haven’t said that to me, and while the words warm me, they seem so foreign. Don’t get me wrong, my parents always made sure I knew they loved me, but they never showed or declared that I had made them proud.

“Can…can I go for a run? I know I let Kira out last night, but she hardly had a chance to enjoy herself and she’s been so restless.” I can see the worry on her face, but I know that she’s aware of the fact that I’m only asking out of respect for her and that, in the end, I’ll go with or without her permission.

“Please be careful, Omara. You may be strong, but there’s great danger beyond our borders.” I nod and exit the house, making my way to the tree line. As I reach the first tree and breathe in the thick forest air, I call forth Kira and allow her to take the freedom she so deeply craves. She rips through the barrier and takes off through the trees at breakneck speed. We pass by several of the border patrol guards as we run through, finally reaching a clearing with a clear pool of water at its center. We reach the water’s edge and I can feel her emotions surging.

I can feel her confusion, her anger, her sadness and most of all, her loneliness. We’re the last of our kind, never to know those of our blood and never to be among others like us. We have family, but we’re still alone in a world full of evil that would strike us down if it knew we existed. In the silence of the meadow Kira releases a howl that’s filled with pain and heartbreak, followed by another and another. The third howl is answered by another in the distance and Kira steps into a defensive stance, scanning the trees for movement.

The air around us stills as a large black wolf emerges from the trees and stalks toward us. His green eyes giving him away as he stops several feet away from us and bows his head. I can’t see the sadness in Kira’s eyes, but I can feel it and it’s almost unbearable. Kira lets out a soft, but desperate whimper and Nuro answers in turn. He rises up and steps closer, nuzzling her neck gently with his muzzle. His touch soothes her and the ache in our heart vanishes. We watch in awe as Nuro shifts back into his human form, hand held out to show he means no harm.

“I feel your sadness, Kira. I hear you. You’re not alone, young wolf. You’ll never be alone again.” She presses her head to his hand, an unspoken acceptance of his promise. “You’ve buried so much, suffered such great agony with no knowledge of how great you truly are. You deserve peace. You deserve happiness. Please, let me help you find them.” I feel Kira’s hesitation as a reminder of our rejection flares to life within us both. How can this man possibly think he can repair such damage? I feel Kira retreating while I try to urge her to stay. She pushes me forward despite my protest and I’m left on the grass in the meadow, bowed down before the alpha.

The waves of Kira’s emotions crash into mine in a symphony of destruction leaving me trembling and sobbing in the grassy meadow. I feel the warmth of arms around me as I’m lifted from the ground, my body alight with a strange warmth. I bury my face in his chest, not daring to look into his eyes for fear he’ll see how broken we truly are. I feel the movement as he begins walking until the light around us is swallowed by darkness and my curiosity quickly gets the best of me. I turn my head to take in the dark surroundings and find that we’re now standing inside some kind of a cave. I feel him lowering himself to a sitting position and finally feel calmed enough to look at the man who’s holding my shattered pieces in his arms.

“Where are we?” I stare into his beautiful green eyes and wait for his answer.

“This is where I come when life becomes too much to bear. I came here when my father died and again when my mother died shortly after. This is where I come to bury my sorrow.” I sit up and take a look at the stone walls around us that are now more visible since my eyes have adjusted. The walls are cold and dark, but the air within is calming and I can feel the charge of energy. I know this energy as it’s the same that courses through my veins. It’s ancient and powerful like that of the sacred lands of my pack.

“How did you find us?” He allows me to shift on his lap, but his arms remain around me.

“One of my patrols called in that they saw a shimmering white wolf run through. Nuro took it from there until we heard you howl.” I let out a gentle sigh and let my eyes travel back to meet his.

“Why did you come for me?” My question seems to have confused him, though I’m not sure why.

“Because I felt your pain. No one should suffer alone. You’ve been alone long enough, Omara.” I feel the weight of his words bearing down on me and it’s overwhelming. I’m trying to process what he’s saying when one thing stands out…

“You say you felt my pain?” He smiles softly and nods then leans forward and breathes in deep, taking in my scent.

“I did. Have you really not figured it out yet?” I stare at him as my confusion deepens.

“Figured what out?” He raises a hand to my cheek, stroking my skin with his thumb and causing immense heat to spread though me.

“We’re connected, Omara. It’s like a mate bond, only much stronger, much deeper. I know you’ve been hurt and I’ll be patient for as long as it takes, but we were meant to be together. I’ve known it since the first moment I saw you. Before that, I dreamt of you every night. We were destined to meet, to find each other.” Kira is reveling in his words, but I’m overcome with one single feeling…fear. He must be able to feel it because he pulls me into his arms and begins to gently stroke my hair.

“If it’s destiny, then why was I mated to another? Why would I have to go through the pain of rejection if I was meant to be with you?” He gently kisses the top of my head and a deep soothing growl rolls through his chest.

“I wish I knew, but all that matters is that you’re here now. You’ll never have to know that pain again.” I feel a calm wash over me and release a heavy breath, exhaling my pain and sadness into the electrically charged air of the cave. I feel the pull to him as surely as I feel my own heart beating within my chest, though my mind fought to brush off the signs until now. Kira senses it as much as I do, but this is nothing like what I felt with Kyle…just like Tristan said, it’s stronger. Kira is pushing, begging for control and I’m quickly losing the will to fight her. I want the pain to end. I want to be happy. I want to be loved. The last of my resolve vanishes and I let her take the control she wants, no longer willing to deny her, or myself.

Chapter 10

Kira

I pull his arms away from our waist, rise to my feet then swing my leg over him, lowering myself back down to straddle his lap. The look in his eyes is full of hunger that only further intensifies my need for him. Our lips crash into his with an undeniable urgency and, much to my delight, he rises to the task without missing a beat. Our tongues tangle and twist in a passionate dance as my hips rock and grind against his already hardening length. His hands explore my body at a feverish pace as he lets out a pleased growl into my mouth with every new inch he discovers. I can feel that this is Nuro, his rough, rushed movements so very different from his human side. His animalistic behavior and the fact that even his panting is accompanied by a slight growl are a dead giveaway of who’s in control and I know he needs this connection as much as I do right now.

We break our passionate kiss and he slides his hands down my hips, gripping them and holding me to him as he slides off of the rock he’s been sitting on then lays me down on the cold dirt, positioning himself at my entrance. His glowing eyes stare into mine, silently seeking permission to continue and I can’t deny him, I wouldn’t even if I could. With a nod of my head, he slides into my hot, wet core slowly. His impressive size overwhelms my senses as he stretches me slowly until he’s fully sheathed inside me. His low growl tells me just how hard he’s struggling to be gentle and control his need to claim me, a need that I feel burning in my own veins. I don’t want him to be gentle and I no longer want his control. I want him…I want him to claim me…to own me and make me his in every way.

I allow my claws to tear forward, digging them into his flesh and severing the last thread of his control. He pulls out then slams back into me with violent force, sending both pleasure and delicious pain shooting through my body. He repeats his assault, slowly picking up pace until we’re both moaning and panting as the pressure builds. I can feel the first surge of my orgasm tearing through me and my claws sink into his back as I howl out my release which only fuels his fire. His body tenses beneath my hands and I quickly force him onto his back, not ready for this moment to end. He growls in excitement as I begin to ride him with desperate and calculated precision. I’m slowly climbing to the cliff of ecstasy when he speaks.

“Claim what’s yours my queen.” His words push me over the edge, our passion and release crashing together in an explosion that sets our bodies on fire. Before I can think about what I’m doing, or give Omara a chance to interfere, my sharp teeth push forward and sink into the flesh of his neck, marking him as mine while my orgasm continues to tear through me in violent waves. The pleasure is overwhelming and only intensifies when his teeth pierce my neck sending wave after wave of agonizing ecstasy through me, unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. We gently lick each other’s marks, healing the wound instantly and leaving behind only the crescent scars. I can feel Omara trying to push forward and I only pray she’ll forgive me for what I’ve done without having considered her feelings first. He’s still buried deep within me as I relinquish control to her.

Omara

I had watched as Kira not only allowed him to claim us, but as she urged him to. I had expected to be angry or hurt, but all I feel is relief. I sit on top of him, still feeling his length stretching me to my limit and stare into his eyes. I watch them as the glow fades and his expression changes, looking more concerned than satisfied, but his body betrays him. I feel him growing harder within me and I know it’s time to reassure him that this is what I want. I begin slowly rocking my hips in a much less confident rhythm than Kira, but still making my intentions clear. He sits up, using his hands to guide my legs around him then trailing them up my sides, over my breasts, up my neck then pulling my lips to his. In an impressively smooth movement, he rises to his feet and I feel the cold stone wall of the cave pressed against my back as he begins slowly thrusting into me. His movements are the complete opposite of Nuro’s. He’s passionate, but gentle and loving. His mouth doesn’t leave mine, deepening our kiss as we both quickly reach the peak of our desire. With one final deep thrust, we both come undone together, falling into a sea of euphoric bliss.

I can feel our link opening and expanding as we slowly come down from our high, feeling all of his emotions flooding me at once. Flashes of memories flood my mind and I close my eyes as I allow myself to focus on what he’s showing me. I see images of a young boy in a field, watching as a pearlescent white wolf approaches him slowly, her glowing pale turquoise eyes stare at him intently as he reaches out a hand to gently stroke her fur. The image fades and another comes into focus. The same boy, though he seems older now. He stands in the same field with the same pearlescent white wolf approaching.

Yet another image comes forward, only the boy is now a man and the wolf is now a woman…she’s me. I watch as I walk toward him and can’t help but wonder if that’s how he truly sees me. I watch as I approach him, but when he reaches for me, he pulls me into a loving embrace. The next image is the most surprising by far. The man is no longer in a field but is standing at the window at the front of the pack house, watching as a car approaches and I climb out of the car, accompanied by my aunt. I feel the excitement, fear and love he felt in that moment. I know the other visions were dreams, but the last was clearly a memory and it has my heart swelling. To know that he had waited his entire life for me is more than overwhelming. I open my eyes and am immediately met by his.

“And now you know. I waited a lifetime for you and I would’ve waited a million more. The goddess never let me forget who was waiting for me and I never stopped waiting for you.” I feel his love burning through me, quickly melting away my past heartache and sadness.

“You’ll never have to wait again. For better or worse, I’m yours.” The truth of my words both warms and terrifies me.

“And I’m yours my queen. Let’s take you home.” He wraps me tightly in his arms and carries me out of the cave. We walk through the forest with not a word spoken, but the emotions flowing between us are loud and clear. I have no doubt that he’s my heart and soul. I never thought that when I found my happiness, it would be with him and it would be so all consuming. I rest my head on his shoulder with my face buried in his neck and drift into a peaceful sleep with the sound of his heartbeat soothing me as he carries me home.
