11 Aftertaste

What was that? That was the first question Nayantara’s brain asked as she woke up. Her hands fisted on the hem of the comforter as she clenched it against her bare torso. She looked beside her. Siddhant was not there, but his spicy scent was still all over her. Now there was no romantic atmosphere, and all her excitement was gone, feelings of regret sank into every cell of her body. What the hell did you do? A voice shouted in her head.

He… He is my husband. I did nothing wrong. She argued weakly.

Husband, who won your kingdom and took you here as a winning trophy. And what if you get pregnant?

Pure terror washed over her. She was never a careless girl. She was wise, always thinking twice before doing anything. But this time, she just did it. She just submitted to her husband without thinking about the consequences.

Have you completely forgotten about your aim? Her brain continued to strike her. All you care about is lust. Lust is a human weakness, Nayantara. A distraction. You ruined everything for a moment of pleasure. When did you become so stupid? Since you have come here, you are so lost enjoying the luxury like you have never seen it before, like you are a poor girl. You are the princess of Anhilwara. Get the grip on your life and don’t drown yourself in all these comforts.

Tears collected in her eyes. So all in my life, I have to just worry and work hard. Can’t I enjoy my life a little?

Enjoy! Her brain scoffed. Go on then, enjoy your life. And one day you will end up like Queen Chitra and Queen Mrignayani. Don’t forget how shady your in-laws are. Maharav Palace is full of mysteries. You must understand that getting married, loved by husband and in-laws, and having a child next year, that dream life is not for you. You have to give justice to your father. You have to give justice to that little princess. You have to sit on the throne of Anhilwara.

Tears started dripping from her eyes. She was not regretting her time with Siddhant, but what she would do about getting pregnant. Her life was messy. She was unhappy. She couldn’t bring a new seedling into the world at this stage of life. But the damage was done. Now there was nothing she could do but wait. Her menstruation was just a couple of days away. She would know soon.

Suddenly, she heard Siddhant’s footsteps. She quickly wiped her tears and closed her eyes. He came out of the dressing room and walked to her. Her heart raced. She didn’t want to face him right now.

He sat at the edge of the bed and caressed her head lovingly. ‘Good morning, princess.’

Nayantara slowly opened her eyes and looked at him.

He gave her a soft smile and kissed her forehead. ‘How are you feeling?’

Nayantara just blinked at him. She felt a lump in her throat, unable to say anything.

‘Are you sore? Any pain?’

Nayantara swallowed hard to calm her racing nerves. ‘I’m fine, my lord. I just want to sleep a little longer.’ Her voice was raspy.

‘Yeah, you rest.’ He kissed her bare shoulder and walked away.

Nayantara lay there, staring at the ceiling, drowning in her thoughts, until Vida came to her.

‘My lady, I just got the news that the king’s grandma has returned from her pilgrimage. You must get ready. You have to meet her,’ Vida said.

Nayantara breathed heavily. ‘Yeah, you prepare my bath. I’m coming.’ She was mentally so exhausted that she didn’t want to leave the bed. She just didn’t want to start the day.

She forced herself to sit. Every muscle in her body was aching. She bent down and grabbed her dupatta from the floor. Wrapping it around her naked body, she stood up. A painful cry escaped her lips due to the pain between her legs. Is it supposed to hurt this badly? She enjoyed last night, but now it was giving her an actual aftertaste. She was angry at everything and everyone. Mostly, she was angry with herself that he violated her, and she enjoyed it.

Her first few steps slightly limped as she walked towards the bathroom. The maids gasped as their eyes fell on Nayantara’s body. There were bruises, hand prints, and bites all over her body. But seeing Nayantara’s washed off mood, they didn’t dare to tease her. Nayantara sat in the water with her eyes closed. The warm water soothed her tired muscles, but there was nothing to soothe her tired brain. Two maids standing at a distance and preparing Nayantara’s clothes were mummering to each other what the king would have done with the queen. But she didn’t care about all this gossip. She had many more things to worry about.

As she got dressed, Vida told her her schedule. ‘My lady, today you have a meeting with the head maid. They have some issues regarding…’

‘I don’t want to meet anyone today. Cancel all my plans,’ Nayantara said in a flat tone.

‘Okay, my lady.’

‘I want to stay alone. Make sure nobody disturbs me.’ With that, Nayantara walked to the balcony and took the stairs down to the private garden. The pain between her legs was a constant reminder of her mistake. She sat on the bench and closed her eyes, soaking up the sun. Two small rabbits came towards her and started playing around her legs. Nayantara smiled and caressed their heads, feeling jealous that everyone was happy in their lives except for her.

‘Nayantara…’

Nayantara groaned in frustration as she heard Siddhant’s voice. She wanted to stay alone, but of course, her lord husband didn’t come in nobody. Vida couldn’t stop him.

‘Nayantara…’ he called again. ‘Where are you, princess?’

‘I’m here, my lord. In the garden,’ Nayantara said as she stood up and turned around to look up at the balcony.

Siddhant went down the stairs and walked towards her with a big smile. ‘Nayantara, my dadi ma has just returned from the pilgrimage. And she is very excited to meet you.’

‘Yeah, Vida told me.’

‘Listien, today we’ll all have lunch together. So I want you to cook something for us. Dadi ma will like it.’

Cook! Nayantara’s heart gave a horrible jolt. She had never cooked in her life. Her auntie had never given her this task; however, many times she had asked Vishakha to cook for everyone. Now she knew why. They didn’t want her to learn cooking, so she had to get embarrassed in front of her husband and in-laws. Because every princess used to know cooking to impress her husband.

‘What do I have to make?’ Nayantara asked in a barely audible voice.

‘Anything. Whatever you like and comfortable with. Maybe a sweet dish or something.’

‘Okay,’ she said in a small voice, relieved that she had to cook just one dish.

Siddhant cupped her cheeks, his finger pressed the soft spot below her ear. ‘Why are you so off, Nayantara? Is everything all right? Tell me if you are in pain?’ His voice was laced with worry. His eyes lingered on a bruise on her neck as his thumb traced it.

Nayantara felt weak on her knees as last night replayed in her head. ‘I’m okay, my lord.’

Siddhant warped his arm around her. ‘C’mon. Dadi ma is waiting for us.’

‘She will like me?’ Nayantara asked nervously as they walked through the long corridor.

Siddhant smiled and rubbed her shoulder reassuringly. ‘Don’t worry. She is very kind hearted.’

As they entered dadi ma’s chamber, she was talking to Aditya. ‘Why? What is wrong with her? Give me one reason?’

‘Dadi ma, please, I don’t want to marry her. That’s it,’ Aditya said.

‘Dadi ma,’ Siddhant said, drawing their attention towards them.

Dadi ma smiled as they approached her. And to Siddhant’s relief, Nayantara touched dadi ma’s feet.

‘Dadi ma, Nayantara,’ Siddhant said, and dadi ma placed her hand on Nayantara’s head.

‘God bless you, my child,’ Dadi ma said. She held her shoulders and pulled her up to embrace her. ‘Give us good news soon,’ she said, and her words felt like salt on Nayantara’s open wound.

Nayantara pulled back and forced a smile on her face.

Dadi ma cupped her cheeks and kissed her forehead. ‘You bring new happiness into my son’s life.’

Nayantara closed her eyes for a moment, relieved that dadi ma accepted her and didn’t lashed at her with bitter words like her mother-in-law. This was all she wanted — a little love and respect.

‘Now that the queen of Maharav is here, I’m giving my responsibility to you.’

Nayantara gave a genuine smile. ‘What responsibility, dadi ma?’

‘Aditya’s responsibility. Siddhant and I are tired of convincing him to get married. We have shown him dozens of beautiful princesses. But he rejected all of them.’

‘Dadi ma, please, don’t drag bhabhi shri in all this,’ Aditya cried.

‘Why not, devar ji? I will find a beautiful princess for you. And I will make sure she knows fencing,’ she said teasingly.

‘Not you too, bhabhi shri. I don’t want to marry yet,’ Aditya said irritably.

‘Then when do you want to marry? You are twenty four now,’ dadi ma scolded.

‘Twenty five next month,’ Siddhant said, and Aditya glared at him.

‘Relax, devar ji, no one is rushing you. You have all the time. I can understand marriage is a serious thing. You can’t make these decisions based on a moment of impulse,’ Nayantara said as she glanced at Siddhant.

Siddhant narrowed his eyes. He could understand her hidden taunt.

‘Thank you, bhabhi shri. You are the only one who understands me,’ Aditya said, and Siddhant and dadi ma shook their heads in disappointment.

They all talked for some time before Siddhant and Nayantara excused themselves, as Siddhant had to go to the throne hall and Nayantara had to cook.

As Nayantara went to the kitchen, she found it empty. ‘Vida, where are the head cook and other servants?’

‘Wait a moment, my lady, I will find out.’ Vida walked away and came back in a few moments.

‘My lady, Rajmata asked them to leave, so you have to cook everything on your own,’ Vida said with a slight fury in her tone.

‘What? But how will I cook without their help?’

‘But, my lady, you can easily overpower her decision. You can call them back. You are the queen after all.’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘No, Vida, she already hates me. If I go against her will, then it will just add more bitterness to our relationship. Can you cook?’

‘Yes, my lady,’ the young girl nodded excitedly.

‘What can you cook?’

‘I can cook all the vegetables… aloo gobi, bhindi, brinjal… roti… dal-chawal…’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘This will not work, Vida,’ she said, and Vida’s face fell. ‘Royal people don’t eat all this. I mean, they eat these, but in a different way. Their dishes are made up of some secret recipes and spices.’

‘Oh, okay,’ Vida hung her head, but then quickly looked up with a new excitement in her eyes. ‘But my mother knows some rich recipes.’

‘That’s a good idea, Vida. We can call you mother and my daai ma,’ Nayantara said, and Vida immediately ran out of the kitchen to call them. Nayantara smiled. Vida was such an enthusiastic young girl.

After five minutes, three of them were standing in front of Nayantara, discussing the recipes.

’Okay, so we will go with navratan korma,’ Nayantara said. ‘You both guide me, okay.’

‘You don’t need to cook, my lady,’ Malini said. ‘We will do it.’

‘No, I will do it myself.’ Nayantara didn’t care about her mother-in-law, but she would like to cook for dadi ma and Aditya. They both welcomed her with a warm heart. And of course, her beasty husband, whose massive cock she could still feel inside her.

She threw herself into cooking. And after hours of hard work, she managed to cook navratan korma, chapatis, and gajar halwa. She wiped the sweat with the back of her hand as she looked at the dishes. She felt like crying. She knew rajmata wouldn’t accept just three dishes. And chapatis couldn’t be counted as a dish, so just two.

‘This will not work, princess.’ Savita gave words to her fear.

‘But it is almost lunch time. I cannot make one new dish in this short amount of time. Dadi ma is nice. She will understand, right?’ Nayantara looked at Savita and Malini for answers.

‘Yes, they will like it,’ Vida said cheerily. ‘I mean, look at korma and halwa. They looked so mouthwatering. You go, my lady. You are all sweaty. Take a bath before everyone arrives for lunch.’

Nayantara gave a weak smile and walked away. After taking a quick bath, she wore light weight attire and headed to the dining hall.

There was a long, low platform table and mats for seating. Dadi ma, Aditya, and Kathan were already there. Kathan was sitting in Aditya’s lap, talking about sword fights.

‘Mami shri,’ Kathan immediately ran to Nayantara as his eyes fell on her. ‘Dadi ma said that today you cooked for me?’

Nayantara ruffled his hair. ‘Yes, I cooked for my little prince.’

‘What have you made for me?’

‘Halwa.’

‘It is my favorite,’ Kathan jumped with joy.

‘Why are you bothering your mami shri?’ Adhisha said as she entered with her husband.

Nayantara greeted them, and they took their places. Then Siddhant came and sat at the head of the table.

‘I will sit beside mama shri,’ Kathan said as he hopped beside Siddhant.

‘Kathan, that place is for your mami shri. You come here,’ Adhisha scolded.

‘Mami shri will sit next to me. I want to sit between them,’ Kathan said to her mother before he turned to Siddhant. ‘Do you know, mama shri, what mami shri made for me? She made halwa.’ Kathan’s chatter went on and on until the maids came with the food and placed it on the table.

Nayantara’s heart began to race as she looked at the three dishes she had cooked. Immediately after that, a few more dishes arrived. Tikka masala, stuffed chillies, daal, and rice.

Nayantara immediately got to know who had cooked them. Malini and Savita had cooked them after she left.

‘I want halwa.’ Kathan bounced up and down in his place. ‘Nobody makes halwa in Gurukul.’

‘Behave yourself, Kathan. Your nani ma hasn’t come yet,’ Adhisha said.

‘It’s okay, Adhisha. Let him start,’ Siddhant said.

Adhisha shook her head. ‘You are spoiling him, bhai shri.’

‘It’s okay, didi. He is just a child,’ Nayantara said as she sat on her knees, filled a bowl with halwa, and handed it to Kathan.

Nayantara held her breath as Kathan took a spoonful of halwa and put it into his mouth.

‘Auooh, mami shri, this is so delicious. I will eat all of it,’ he complimented, and Nayantara’s heart leaped with joy. Seeing the little boy smile, she felt that all her hard work had been worth it.

‘You taste it, mama shri,’ Kathan said as he filled the spoon again and forwarded it towards Siddhant’s mouth.

Siddhant looked at Nayantara, and her heart skipped a beat. He took the bite without breaking eye contact with her. Nayantara fidgeted with her fingers as he chewed on it more slowly than necessary.

‘Is halwa that hard, bhai shri, that you have to chew so much?’ Aditya teased.

‘No, it is not,’ Kathan said innocently, and everyone laughed.

‘Don’t you think it’s too sweet, Kathan?’ Siddhant said, and Nayantara looked away to hide her blush.

‘No, I like it this way,’ Kathan said, who didn’t understand the puns the elders were using. He then fed Adiya, dadi ma and his parents.

‘Wow, bhabhi shri, perfect,’ Aditya said. And with each compliment, Nayantara’s smile was growing bigger.

‘Nayantara, my child, you gratified us by cooking with such love,’ dadi ma said.

‘Dadi ma,’ Nayantara lowered her gaze as she said, ‘I didn’t cook everything. I just cooked halwa, korma, and chapatis.’

Before dadi ma could say anything, Padmini entered the room and took her place. Her face was stern as usual. Nayantara felt her fingers become cold, and she took a sharp breath to calm her nerves. She just wished that her mother-in-law liked it.

‘Come, sit, Nayantara,’ Siddhant said, drawing her attention towards him.

Nayantara nodded and took her seat beside Kathan. The maids served them. They all folded their hands and did a small prayer before they started eating. Everyone jumped on the food immediately, but Padmini sat there without touching her food.

‘Is something wrong, maa shri?’ Siddhant asked, and Nayantara looked up at Padmini. She knew her mother-in-law would create a scene.

‘Wrong!’ Padmini sneered. ‘This is what she cooked,’ she said, picking up the chapati. ‘Have you seen its shape? And it is harder than the rock. How could someone eat this?’

A quick anger rose inside Nayantara, but she swallowed hard to control herself.

‘It is not that bad, maa,’ Siddhant said.

‘It is not perfect either,’ she said curtly. ‘She hasn’t even cooked sufficient dishes. This is nowhere near a royal meal.’

‘She will learn with time, maa,’ Adhisha said in her overly sweet voice, and Nayantara felt even more angry. She didn’t know what was wrong with her. Adhisha spoke in her support, but still, for some strange reason, Nayantara hated her.

‘Yes, maa,’ Siddhant said. ‘And I had asked her to make one dish. Still, she made all of these.’

‘It was your greatness. But she should understand what to make in the first cooking. My Chitra and Mrignayani knew everything from the beginning,’ Padmini seethed.

‘She is not Chitra and Mrignayani. Don’t compare her with them,’ Siddhant said.

Nayantara was taking in every insult with her head low. Her hands fisted on her skirt to control her rising warmth.

‘Padmini, why don’t you taste it?’ dadi ma said in a slightly scolding tone.

‘Why, maa shri? Why should the rules be different for her?’ Padmini said in a slow, sharp tone. ‘Have you forgotten, maa shri, I was just fifteen when I came here. And you made me cook the entire royal meal for seventeen people on my own. And I had cooked five subzis, three sweets, and many other things. And Chitra was just seventeen when she cooked for us. And she had made sweets of everyone’s choice. And Mrignayani had made seven new foreign dishes that we had never tasted before. And this is what she made. Just two common sabzi. That is it. I don’t know what my son saw in her. She can’t even cook.’

That’s it. All her life, Nayantara just longed for some respect. She was okay if they didn’t love her, but at least they could give her some respect. It was too much to ask. After all, she was their family. ‘If you have so much problem with me, then why did you let your son marry me?’ Nayantara snapped.

‘Nayantara,’ Siddhant said her name in a warning to stay quiet.

‘My son didn’t want to marry you, your uncle begged on his knees for this alliance. And I can now understand why he did so, otherwise who would marry a girl like you.’

‘Maa… please…’ Siddhant pleaded.

Nayantara stood up. She couldn’t take this anymore.

‘Nayantara… wait…’ Siddhant tried to stop her, but she stormed off without a second glance at anyone.

Siddhant shook his head helplessly. ‘Why did you ruin everything, maa?’

‘Do you think I would eat food cooked by her? Her father killed my husband. And now her uncle sold his damaged piece to us.’

Siddhant stood up. ‘Enough, maa… What happened to you? She is my wife. The queen of Maharav. Speak of her with respect.’ With that, Siddhant left the room.

12 Breaking down

Nayantara ran towards her chamber. Her eyes were shining with angry tears, her dupatta fell from her head as she ran through the corridor. The guards respectfully lowered their gazes seeing the queen in devastated form. As she entered the chamber, she dashed to the balcony. She was feeling so suffocated. Her head was throbbing with pain and anger. First, her uncle killed her father and treated her like a maid, then he sold her to save himself and married her off to a man who already had two wives and a shady past. Siddhant brought her here as a winning trophy, and now her mother-in-law was lashing her with her words. How much humiliation and abuse she had to face? For the last eleven years, she had been living in constant pain, and nobody cared. Even God or his ancestors never heard her prayers. She cried day and night, but there was no one to wipe her tears. Still, she was living — living in the hope that one day her time would come. One day, she would get control of her life. She would get the power — the power to destroy anyone who raised their heads in front of her — a complete authority over her life and her kingdom.

Sometimes she wished she could fight like her father and husband. Then she didn’t have to make plans and strategies; she could just put the sword on her uncle’s neck and claim the throne. But she was a thin, underweight girl. She couldn’t even lift a sword. No, Nayantara, no. Don’t think like that. No weapon is more dangerous than the brain. In the end, only you will win.

Siddhant rushed into the chamber immediately after her, and Nayantara’s body stiffened as she felt his presence.

Siddhant slowly walked to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. ‘Nayantara, I’m sorry…’

‘Don’t touch me,’ Nayantara shouted, pushing his hand away and turning to face him. Her eyes were burning with rage.

‘Nayantara, I can understand your…’ Siddhant tried to hold her into his arms, but she stepped back and yelled like a mad woman.

‘You cannot understand anything. You have ruined my life.’

Siddhant’s jaw hardened. ‘Stop shouting like a spoiled brat. I had warned you from the first day about your manners. You are not a princess anymore. You are a queen now. A wife. A daughter-in-law. Increase your tolerance level a little.’

Nayantara gave a bitter laugh. ‘Yeah, right, so I can tolerate more humiliation. Did you hear what your mother said to me?’

Siddhant shook his head tiredly. ‘Nayantara, I know…’

‘What did she mean by a girl like me, huh?’ Nayantara interrupted him angrily. ‘If you are the king of Maharav then I’m also the princess of Anhilwara. And Anhilwara is not some princely state whose princess needs to compromise. But still, my uncle married me to a man who was ten years older than me and already had two wives. Everybody is insulting me because I don’t have my father to protect me. If my father were alive, you could never have won Anhilwara.’ Her body was shaking in anger and pain.

Siddhant’s jaw jutted with aggression. ‘You are right. I ruined your life. Any young, handsome prince will easily fall for such a clever and sharp tongued girl. You deserve better than me. I will not force you into this marriage anymore. I’m allowing you to go back to your Anhilwara. I will make all the arrangements. You can leave tomorrow morning. And if you cannot wait that long, you can leave even right now.’ With that, he stormed off.

Nayantara’s heart broke into a million pieces. Siddhant was his only family. She was expecting anything, but not this. He wanted her to leave. Wasn’t she his wife? She collapsed to the floor in anguish. First, he forcibly married her, and now he didn’t want her. How could he do this? She would be a laughing thing for both Maharav and Anhilwara.

Why, father, why did you leave me? I’m your daughter. Didn’t you have any responsibility towards me? How could God and my ancestors give all happiness and joy to my uncle and his family and not a bit to me? Everyone did wrong to me, but they are all happy, and I’m the only one who is suffering.

She cried and cried and then fell asleep there in a heap of emotion.

It was late evening when Siddhant came back to his chamber in the hope that now Nayantara’s anger would have subsided. His eyes searched the chamber, but she was nowhere. He walked to the balcony and was stunned at the sight.

Nayantara was still there, lying on the floor in a fetal position.

Siddhant ran to her and sat on his knees beside her. ‘Nayantara…’ He tapped on her shoulder.

She was muttering something in her sleep. ‘Fa-th-er… fa-er… dwn’t g…’ she slurred.

Siddhant pulled her into his lap. He could catch some of her words. She was calling her father. He had no idea she was this much hurt.

‘Nayantara… princess…’ he called her softly.

Her hands fisted on the hem of his overcoat. ‘Noo… noo… d-n’t jo…’

His heart ached for her as she mumbled more words, this time completely unintelligible. ‘Princess, nobody is going anywhere. Open your eyes. Everything is okay. You are just dreaming, my love.’ He brushed a strand of her hair out of her eyes and watched her face contort.

She whimpered, and Siddhant cradled her in his arms, rocked her as if she was a baby. ‘No, no, my princess, calm down. Open your eyes.’ He slowly unclenched her fists and rubbed her palms. Her hand was so small, thin in his huge palm.

‘Auh… nu… dn-t… fa-tr… fath-r…’ Seeing her cry for her father was heart wrenching. She held Siddhant’s arm close to her chest.

Siddhant looked at her with pity in his eyes. He had lost many people in his life. He could understand her hopeless yearning for her father. ‘Princess, I’m here with you. Calm down, my love.’ He rubbed her arm up and down and kissed her sweaty head. He held her tight against his chest and kept saying her soothing words until she stopped babbling and the pain on her face faded away. He could feel her heartbeat slowing down to a normal pace.

Her eyes blinked slowly.

‘Yes, my princess, open your eyes. Everything is okay,’ he cooed.

She looked dazed for a moment, but then she suddenly sat up and detached herself from his embrace.

She stood up and rushed towards the dressing room. Siddhant followed her. She roamed into the room in search of something.

‘Nayantara, what happened? What are you looking for?’ Siddhant asked worriedly.

She didn’t say anything. She opened the cupboards and took out a bedsheet. She spread the bedsheet on the dressing table and went to the cupboard again.

Siddhant stood there, watching her hasty movements.

She took out some of her dresses and threw them on the bedsheet. She knew she had no place to go. Her uncle would never accept her. But still, after this contempt, she couldn’t stay here.

‘What the hell are you doing, Nayantara?’ This time, Siddhant asked in a strong, demanding voice.

Siddhant clenched his fists as she didn’t say anything and continued with her madness. He pushed her against the cupboard door. Her back hit the solid wood, and she winced in pain.

‘I’m talking to you. What are you doing?’ Siddhant asked in a scolding tone. His huge frame was towering over her.

Nayantara’s face was emotionless as she looked into his eyes. ‘Following my husband’s order. He wants me to leave. So I’m leaving,’ she said in a flat tone.

It took Siddhant a moment to make the connection to what she was talking about. He had completely forgotten about it. He said those things in a surge of anger, but he didn’t mean it.

When he didn’t say anything, Nayantara continued, ‘Don’t worry, I will not take anything from here. Just a few clothes.’

‘What nonsense!’ Siddhant snapped back to reality. ‘This empire, every princely state, every town, every village, all the wealth of Maharav comes under you. And you are talking about insignificant clothes.’

‘An abandoned wife has no rights to anything. When my husband is not mine, then…’ She blinked her eyes to fight back her tears.

‘Nayantara, it was reflex action. You said you were not happy with me, and in a fit of rage, I said those things. But I…’

‘Tell me one thing, my lord,’ Nayantara interrupted him, her voice cold. ‘If I get pregnant after leaving you, what will our child be? A bastard!’

‘NAYANTARA…’ Siddhant roared. His hand raised in the air, and Nayantara closed her eyes, ready for the impact. But it didn’t land on her cheek, instead it landed beside her face, making a big cracking sound and a hole in the wooden door.

Siddhant closed his eyes and took a sharp breath, relieved that he had stopped himself in time. If he had slapped her, he would not only have disrespected his wife, but his heavy, rock-like hand would have broken her delicate jaw or, worse, killed her. He had never raised his hand to Chitra and Mrignayani. But they both were such sweet, submissive wives. They were not a fireball like Nayantara. They never provoked him like this. They even never argued with him.

Nayantara shrank in fear, her breathing heavy. Siddhant’s wrath was not easy to handle. When he got angry, he looked more feral, and his beasty features were pronounced even more.

He rested his head on her. ‘I’ve not abandoned you, Nayantara. I can never do that. You know I didn’t mean it,’ he said tiredly, hoping she would understand.

Nayantara took a sharp breath to calm her shaking body. His sturdy, muscular physique was swallowing her.

Siddhant pulled back to look into her eyes. ‘This is your home, and you are not going anywhere. I will never let you go,’ he said with finality in his tone.

Nayantara looked away. ‘If this were my home, you would never have asked me to leave,’ she whispered.

Siddhant cupped her cheeks, forcing her to look at him. ‘Please forgive me, princess. What can I do for your forgiveness, tell me?’ he asked softly.

Pain rushed into her eyes as she said, ‘It’s not that I’m not aware of my mistake, my lord. I know I should not talk back to your mother. I know you would punish me for that. But I never thought you’d break the marriage, you’d send me back,’ she trailed off, and Siddhant’s heart swelled with compassion.

‘No, my princess, no. Marriage is a divine bond. I cannot even think of breaking it.’ His voice was thick with emotion.

Nayantara pushed him back. ‘I want to stay alone for sometime.’ She ran down to the garden. She sat on the bench and burst into tears. She wanted to leave. But when you have no place to go, you have to compromise with your self respect.

Siddhant didn’t go after her. She was so angry that no matter how much he apologized to her, she was not going to listen. He had to give her some time. He sat on the edge of the bed. His heart was aching for her. He knew she was in a lot of pain. She was not able to digest this marriage. She was taking this alliance as her insult. But what could he do now? He couldn’t just let his wife go.

A few hours passed. Siddhant waited for her, but she didn’t come back. He could see her from the balcony. She was sitting on the bench like a statue, her back facing him.

‘My lord!’ Vida’s voice grabbed his attention, and he walked into the room. She was standing there with her head low.

‘Yeah, Vida?’

‘My lord, the lady hasn’t eaten anything since morning,’ Vida said in a small voice.

Siddhant sighed deeply. Now he knew why she was so thin. Her spicy nature ate up all her calories. He just wanted to run to her and pull her into his lap and feed her with his hand. But he knew she would not lower her guard that easily. ‘Leave it, Vida. She will not eat.’

‘My lord, do I bring your dinner here?’

‘Is there still food left that Nayantara made?’

‘No, my lord. The maids ate it. Now there is just some left in the pot, which we will throw away.’

‘Bring that food here.’

Vida’s head shot up to look at the king, but then she immediately lowered her gaze. ‘But, my lord, it is not fresh anymore. That food is not suitable for you.’

‘My Nayantara cooked it for me. No amount of food should be wasted.’

‘Okay, my lord.’

In some time, Vida came back with a plate. She had reheated the food. She also put some fresh food there in case the king wanted it.

Siddhant sat on the couch and pulled the table close. He was feeling so helpless. His one wrong move ruined everything. Nayantara was hurt. His mother was hurt. All because of his one yes to this alliance. The other princesses were dying to marry him, but no, he had to marry this fiery princess. He had lost his appetite, but still he started eating. He really appreciated her effort. She was the princess of Anhilwara. Anhilwara was as big and wealthy as Maharav. He could understand that she was not used to working on her own. But his mother didn’t want to understand all this. She always saw her as an enemy.

He finished the plate and went back to the balcony. He shook his head as he saw Nayantara was still there, but now she was sleeping on the bench. Why was she so stubborn? Today, Siddhant was missing Chitra so much. She was such an understanding wife. He knew it was not right to compare Nayantara with Chitra. They both were different persons. But after dealing with Nayantara’s temper, he couldn’t help it.

He thought of carrying her into the room. But in that, there was a possibility of her waking up and fighting with him for touching her. And he didn’t want one more fight. He looked at the sky. The weather was pleasant and suitable for sleeping outside.

He took a blanket and some incense and walked down to the garden. He stared at her thin, fragile body. She looked so innocent in her sleep. Her smooth, curvy waist was visible, and her skirt was slightly up, revealing her shapely calf. Siddhant fought his urge to pull her into his arms, kiss every inch of her body, and suck her warm, tempting folds. Pushing his dirty thoughts away, he put the blanket on her and bent forward to kiss her forehead. ‘I hope tomorrow we can make peace.’ He then burned some incense around her to keep mosquitoes away before he walked back to his chamber.

The next day, Nayantara got up early, even before servants in the palace. She smiled weakly as she found a blanket on her. Vida was so caring, she thought as she sat up. She felt stiffness on her neck and back as she had slept on the hard bench. She took the bath on her own and got dressed without any noise as Siddhant was still asleep. First, she had to get rid of her main worry about getting pregnant. She had once read that there were some herbs that could prevent pregnancy. But she didn’t know much about it. She just hoped the physician in the palace would have known about this. She slowly stepped out of her chamber and went to the infirmary.

‘My lady, you are here this early. Are you all right? You should have called me if you are not well,’ the physician said.

‘I’m perfectly all right. Now listen to me. I want to know if there are any medicines that can prevent pregnancy?’

The physician thinned her brows. ‘There is, my lady. But why are you asking about it?’

‘I want it,’ Nayantara stated firmly.

The physician gaped at her. ‘Why? For who?’

‘It is not in your jurisdiction to ask me questions?’ Nayantara said sternly.

‘I have to ask, my lady. If you want it for yourself, I need a permission letter from the king.’

Nayantara shook her head in disbelief. ‘Why?’

‘He is your husband, my lady,’ she said, like it was an obvious thing. ‘What if he wants a child? And you are not an ordinary woman. You are a queen. You have some duties towards your kingdom.’

Nayantara gritted her teeth. She knew what duties she was talking about. Maharav didn’t have an heir yet. ‘Fine, you will get the letter,’ she said, and she took out a ring from her finger and handed it to the physician. ‘Don’t tell anyone about this. If this news leaks, I will fire you and banish you from Maharav.’

The physician looked down at the ring and nodded. ‘I will not.’

Nayantara walked out and headed back to her chamber. She knew Siddhant wouldn’t agree to this. Why would he? He and his entire family would be desperate for the heir. She had to try, and fight if necessary.

When she came to her chamber, Siddhant was not on the bed. He might be in the bathroom. She went to the study room and prepared the letter. By the time she came back to the bedroom, Siddhant was all dressed and sitting on the couch, writing a letter.

This was the right time. Nayantara walked to him and placed the letter on the table.

Siddhant looked up at her. She was dressed in pink attire with just a nuptial chain around her neck. Her slightly wet hair was open with thick, red vermilion in the partition of her hair, showing she belonged to him. His grumpy princess. ‘What is this?’ he asked calmly.

‘This letter is saying that you are allowing me to take birth control herbs. I want your signature on this,’ Nayantara said in one breath.

‘What?’ Siddhant gawked at her in utter shock.

‘Yes, sign it,’ Nayantara stated firmly.

‘But why?’ Siddhant said, confused. How could she demand something like this?

‘Because I don’t want a child yet.’

Siddhant just stared at her, trying to soak up her words. ‘Nayantara, there is no such medicine.’

‘There is. You just sign it.’

Siddhant shook his head in disbelief. He was not desperate for an heir, as he had Aditya to take his place. But he was craving a baby girl. He wanted his Aayushi back. ‘I’ve never seen a princess like you. Generally, princesses are desperate to give an heir to the throne and secure their power and position as Mother Queen. Even Chitra and Mrignayani were desperate to give me a child. Don’t you want the same?’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘I don’t want that kind of background power,’ she muttered.

Siddhant narrowed his eyes. ‘Then what do you want? Don’t tell me you want the throne.’

‘Siddhant, just sign it,’ Nayantara said irritably, trying hard not to raise her voice.

Siddhant took a sharp breath before he said with a heavy heart, ‘Okay, if you don’t want a child, I will take care of it. You don’t have to take any weird herbs.’ He had never heard of this kind of herb before; what if they were not safe?

‘Good. But I still want a backup. In case… you know…’

Siddhant’s jaw hardened, a vein on his temple started throbbing. Her demand was not just highly inappropriate, but she had no shame or regret for asking it. He grabbed the paper near him and signed it hastily. ‘Here,’ He shoved it towards Nayantara. ‘If you are so against having a child, then I have a better option. I will never touch you.’ With that, Siddhant stood up and strode away.

Nayantara stood there, staring at his back as he walked away. She knew she had hurt him. But she didn’t care. Why should she? Nobody ever cared for her feelings, then why should she care for others?

But then he stopped at the doorway and turned back. ‘And please eat something. You haven’t eaten anything since yesterday,’ he said before he went through the door.

Nayantara’s heart jolted with a surge of emotions. Even after all the fighting and hurting him deeply by rejecting his seed, he still cared for her.

13 The queen tries to win the king

Two days passed. And those two days were full of restlessness for Nayantara. Her mood became more spoiled when, even after that letter, she couldn’t get that herb as it was not available right now. The physician said it would have to be imported from outside, and it would take six to seven days. It never went the way she wanted. So now she had to leave everything to God. And God never listened to her.

Siddhant didn’t talk to her after that. He even used to sleep with his back towards Nayantara, and Nayantara was also fine with it. She didn’t care about anyone in this world. She immersed herself into palace administration work, but still she couldn’t help with her constant worry about getting pregnant.

Plus, dadi ma had created a new problem. She scolded both Padmini and Nayantara for their bad behavior and made a rule that everyone would take lunch together. Nayantara was not comfortable with this, but she had no daring to refuse dadi ma. Lunch time was tense for her. But to her relief, Padmini hadn’t said anything to her in the last two days. Kathan had gone as he had to go to Gurukul, but Adhisha and her husband were still here.

Today was the third day since that incident. Now Nayantara’s anger was calmed, and she was regretting her behavior towards Siddhant. She was so incensed with him for no reason. He was nice to her from day one. If she wanted to achieve her goal, she would have to keep her husband by her side. She couldn’t fight with him all the time. She was missing his kisses and hugs. She wanted him to hold her when she slept. His distance was now killing her. So she decided to talk to him.

She had woken up early and was already dressed. But Siddhant was getting ready. She walked into the dressing room. One of the maids was tying the string of his kurta, and another one was adjusting the overcoat on his shoulder.

‘Privacy,’ Nayantara said, drawing Siddhant’s attention towards her. The maids immediately went out of the room. Nayantara walked to him. He was all dressed, so she took his crown from the dressing table and put it on his head. ‘My lord, I want to apologize to you,’ she said as she adjusted the crown.

‘For what, Nayantara?’ Siddhant said as he stood up. His voice was deathly calm. ‘Everything is my fault, then why are you apologizing?’ He walked away, but Nayantara held his arm.

Siddhant respectfully removed her hand from his arm. ‘Nayantara, I’m getting late. And you also have a lot of work. We will talk later,’ he said and left the room.

Nayantara sighed and walked out with deadly steps. She decided to work in the garden. Maybe nature could heal her a little.

For the next hour, Nayantara sat in the garden under a tree with piles of papers all around her. Vida was playing with rabbits and birds, as she was not interested in what Nayantara was doing.

Nayantara thumped her hand on the papers, drawing Vida’s attention.

‘Siddhant just knows how to win the war. He has no attention toward anything else,’ she muttered.

Vida ran to Nayantara with a small rabbit in her arms. ‘What happened, my lady? Have you found another fraud?’ Her eyes lit up with excitement.

Nayantara chuckled. ‘No, Vida. It is just that everything is so disorganized. It will take me a while to get everything on track.’ She rested her head against the trunk of the tree and rubbed her head.

‘You look so tired, my lady.’ Vida sat in front of Nayantara and let the rabbit go. The rabbit jumped on Nayantara’s lap and nestled there.

‘I’m, Vida.’ Nayantara said as she stroked the little rabbit.

‘Then leave all these and rest for some time.’

‘I’m mentally exhausted, Vida. Physical rest will not heal me.’

‘I will message your head. You will feel relaxed after that.’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘No. I’m okay.’

‘Is it because of your fight with the king?’ Vida asked carefully.

Nayantara took a sharp breath. Vida had hit her nerve.

‘You both look so good together,’ Vida said. ‘The king loves you so much. That day, he ate everything you cooked.’

Nayantara straightened her back, and the rabbit ran away. ‘What did you say?’

‘What?’ Vida blinked at her confusedly.

’He ate what?’

‘The food you had made. That day, I asked the king to dinner. And he said he would eat what you had cooked.’

‘What? He ate stale food?’

Vida smiled. ‘Yes, my lady. He said my Nayantara cooked it for me. No amount of food should be wasted.’

Nayantara’s heart swelled with love and regret. He respected her food and effort, even after she was so rude to him. Siddhant’s words rang into her head. Nayantara, just because we have a bad past and we are hurt, that doesn’t mean we should hurt everyone around us.

Nayantara stood up. She couldn’t just sit like this and wait for things to sort out on their own. She had to make efforts to win her husband back. She decided to cook for him. As she was not good at cooking, she decided to focus on one dish at a time. But this time, she would only cook for him. She didn’t want another conflict with her mother-in-law.

The atmosphere in the dining room was heavy. Padmini glared at Nayantara when she found Siddhant had one additional sabzi on his plate. However, she didn’t say anything. Dadi ma and Aditya giggled and chatted in barely audible voices. Nayantara’s heart leapt with joy when Siddhant put out the other bowls of sabzi from his plate and only ate the sabzi Nayantara had cooked for him. But he didn’t give any reaction. He ate quietly, acted like it was his regular food.

At night, Nayantara again tried to communicate with him, but he said he was tired and slept, turning his back towards her.

The next day, Nayantara made a sweet dish, and like yesterday, Siddhant ate the sweet dish she made and rejected other sweets. Nayantara was dying to know whether he liked it or not. But he didn’t say anything.

Another two days passed. Nayantara was now more restless. Even after trying everything, Siddhant was talking to her. He ate whatever she cooked but didn’t give any reaction. She was okay if he shouted, fought, or scolded her. But she couldn’t stand his quietness anymore. She was dying to hear his voice. The way he called her princess out of affection. And if this was not enough, her menstruation was two days late. She knew it was not a big thing. But when you acted out of lust, you certainly felt worried.

But the next day, all Nayantara’s stress washed off when she got her menstruation. Generally, she didn’t like her bleeding days. But today she was feeling more energetic, even after little cramps. She was ready to face every problem and challenge. But first, she would start with the task that was higher in priority. Her safety.

‘Vida, I’m in the study room. You come there with a glass of lemon juice,’ saying so, Nayantara went to study. She instructed Aazad and Abhay to stand at the door and make sure nobody entered or overheard them.

In a few moments, Vida came there with a glass of lemon juice and some fruits. Aazad closed the door behind her.

‘My lady, if you are in pain, then why don’t you rest a little?’ Vida said as she placed everything on the table.

Nayantara smiled as she picked up the glass of lemon juice and took a sip. ‘When you are happy, Vida, your brain used to ignore the pain.’

Vida beamed. ‘So you get the king?’

Nayantara rolled her eyes. ‘No, the king has decided to torture me. But don’t worry about him. Today, I will break the ice between us. By hook or by crook,’ she said mischievously.

‘What are you going to do, my lady?’ Vida asked excitedly.

‘That I will tell you later. First, I have to talk to you about something important. Take the seat,’ Nayantara said as she finished the glass in one go and put it back on the table.

Vida pulled the chair and sat in front of Nayantara.

‘Look, Vida, I’m trusting you with a very serious thing. I hope you will not disappoint me.’

‘What is it, my lady? I will try my best.’

‘First, you have to promise me that you will not tell anyone about this. Not even your mother. This thing will always remain between us.’

‘I promise you, my lady.’

‘Good. Now listen. We have to find out everything about Queen Chitra and Mrignayani.’

‘But I already know everything about them,’ she said confidently.

‘And what about the things you don’t know? Like, who killed them?’

Vida shuddered. ‘What are you saying, my lady! Nobody killed them. Those were unfortunate events.’

‘I would be happy if that were true. But my instinct is saying that something is fishy.’

‘Then you should talk to the king, my lady.’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘He has already done the investigation, and nothing comes out of it. I don’t want to reopen his wounds without strong evidence.’ It was not that he would believe her just like that. And even if he did, he would hand this to the investigation agency, and that would make the murderer alert.

‘My lady, if the king doesn’t want to dig into this, then why do you care?’

‘First, they are Siddhant’s family, which makes them my family, and second, whoever killed them will try to kill me as well.’ Nayantara knew she sounded like a mentally sick person who always lived in constant fear. But she could tell from her experience that nothing about royal people could be a coincidence.

‘What? But why?’ Vida’s face bleached.

Nayantara sighed wearily. ‘The throne asks for blood.’

Vida palmed her face. ‘This is so scary, my lady.’

‘It is, Vida. My life is in danger, and I want your help.’

‘What do I have to do?’ she asked with determination in her eyes.

‘Your favorite thing. Gossip.’ Nayantara said as she took a slice of orange and put it in her mouth.

‘Gossip?’

‘Yeah, you have to talk to everyone in the palace and collect the information. Talk to the maids who had survived them once. Talk to their personal maids. Talk to the maids working in the kitchen. In short, you have to talk to everyone. I’m sure someone knows something that others don’t. But you have to do this very smartly. Nobody should be suspicious that you are doing this purposefully. And remember, Vida, we have to collect more and give less. When you ask them, they will also ask you about me out of curiosity. You don’t have to pass any sensitive information about me.’

‘I will take care of it, my lady.’

‘Whatever you will listen to, you will report to me daily.’

‘Okay, my lady. But I have to do this after dinner. At that time, most of the maids are free and talk and gossip about their day.’

Nayantara nodded. ‘You can do it on your time and your way,’ she said, and she took out a pouch full of gold coins and put it in front of Vida. ‘This is for you.’

Vida shook her head. ‘I cannot take this, my lady. Your life is in danger. And as your personal maid, it is my duty to protect you.’

Nayantara gave a small smile. ‘You are not my personal maid. You are like my little sister.’

A big smile flashed on Vida’s face as she jumped on her feet and threw her arms around Nayantara. ‘You are so nice, my lady.’

Nayantara chuckled as she wrapped her arms around her. Vida pulled back after a moment with happy tears in her eyes. ‘I will not tell anyone about our mission, but I will definitely tell my mother and everyone in the palace that the queen sees me as her little sister.’

Nayantara laughed. ‘You are so cute, Vida. If you could help me solve this mystery and give justice to those poor souls, then Maharav will never be able to repay you. But for now, you take this.’

‘You keep it with you, my lady. I will take it after this work is done.’

‘Okay, as you wish. Now let go, I have to cook for the king.’

Nayantara headed her way towards the kitchen, and Vida followed her. Today came with all the good news. When she went to the kitchen, she found out that Adhisha and her husband, Vikam, had left today. So they would not be at lunch. Nayantara felt lighter with this news. She hated her sister-in-law for no reason.

‘What did you do, my lady?’ Vida cried as Nayantara mixed a lot of red chili powder in the sabzi. ‘Oh, no, everything is wasted. Now you have to cook again.’

‘No, it’s all done,’ Nayantara said wickedly.

‘Done? The king will eat this?’

‘Yup.’

‘It will burn his tongue.’

‘Let it burn. Hasn’t he been burning my heart for the last few days?’

Vida giggled. Both women went back to the chamber and waited for lunch time.

By the time of lunch, Nayantara’s heart was fluttering with fear and excitement. This prank could put her in trouble. But today she had made up her mind that she would get a reaction out of him.

The food had been served, and as usual, Siddhant picked the sabzi, which Nayantara had cooked for him. The sabzi had tomato curry in it, so Siddhant couldn’t recognize the extra red chili powder in it.

Nayantara held her breath as he tore a big piece of roti and dipped it into sabzi. He scooped up a generous amount of sabzi with the roti and put it in his mouth.

It took a moment before he started coughing badly, drawing everyone’s attention towards him.

Aditya and dadi ma giggled, but then quickly put their hands on their mouths to stop their laughter. They immediately understood Nayantara’s mischief.

Padmini glared at Nayantara. ‘What are you giving my son every day? Why is he coughing so much like you poisoned him?’

Nayantara smiled softly. She didn’t want to repeat her mistake. So she answered her in a very sweet, polite way. ‘How could I poison him, maa shri? He is my husband. I love him.’

Siddhant coughed even more. She was never sweet when they were alone. And here she was. Publicly showing her affection. Bragging how much she loved him.

‘Oh, my lord, what happened?’ she asked innocently as she leaped beside him and rubbed his back. ‘Easy, my lord, easy. Here,’ she picked up the glass of water and brought it to his lips. Siddhant took a few gulps as Nayantara continued to rub his back.

‘Okay, my lord? Better now?’ she asked silkily.

Siddhant stared hard at her before he said, ‘Yes, my lady. Thanks for the water. Now please take your place.’ His voice was hoarse from all the coughing.

Aditya and dadi ma couldn’t control themselves anymore and started laughing openly at Siddhant’s condition. Padmini was beyond angry but didn’t say anything.

Nayantara went back to her place and started with the delicious food on her plate, while Siddhant continued to eat that spicy sabzi and coughed throughout lunch. Sweat covered his head, and his eyes and nose started running.

Nayantara’s heart was heavy when she went back to her chamber. Siddhant ate everything without any complaint.

‘I shouldn’t do this. I make him even more angry. Now he will never talk to me,’ she cried.

‘Don’t worry, my lady, the Lord has a forgiving heart,’ Vida said. ‘Didn’t he forgive your uncle? If he wanted, he could have killed your uncle and then married you.’

Nayantara rolled her eyes. I wish he had done that.

She spent the rest of the time worrying and waiting for him. But when he didn’t come at his usual time, Nayantara changed into her night clothes and lay on the bed. Her legs were tired from pacing all evening.

Suddenly, she heard Siddhant’s footsteps. He walked in and blew off some of the lamps before he walked to the dressing room. He changed into his night clothes and went to bed. He lay on his side of the bed with his back towards Nayantara.

Nayantara clenched her fists. He was treating her like an invisible thing. But she was not going to give up. Her eyes lit up as another plan cooked up in her head.

‘My lord!’ She tapped on his shoulder.

Siddhant didn’t say anything.

‘My lord?’ She tapped again.

‘What, Nayantara?’ he said irritably, without turning back.

‘Auh, I’m in pain,’ she said in a small voice.

Siddhant immediately turned around, propping himself up on one elbow, and looked down at her. ‘What happened?’ His face tensed. ‘You got hurt?’

Nayantara pressed her lips in a thin line to suppress her smile. Her plan was working. ‘I’m feeling cramps.’

Siddhant thinned his brows, confused. ‘Cramps?’

‘Yes, menstrual cramps,’ she said innocently.

Siddhant relaxed and shook his head in disbelief. ‘What can I do in this, Nayantara? Go to sleep, you will feel better tomorrow,’ he said, but before he could turn away, Nayantara interrupted him again.

‘How can I sleep when my stomach is hurting?’ she said like a poor, helpless girl. However, she was not feeling any pain. She had a little pain in the morning, but it had gone away in half an hour. Now she was completely alright.

Siddhant sighed and sat up. He called the maid and asked her to bring a hot water bag, but Nayantara refused it and sent the maid back. That made Siddhant even more irritated. ‘Then what do you want? Do you want me to call the physician for this?’

‘Why are you shouting at me like this is my fault?’ she whined like a child.

Siddhant took a deep breath. His face softened as he asked calmly and patiently, ‘Then what do you want, princess? Do you want to eat or drink something?’

Nayantara’s heart leapt up as he called her princess after four days. But she kept her excitement in check and shook her head. ‘No, I want you to message my stomach.’

Siddhant swallowed as he felt hard in the middle of nowhere. Why did her simple request make him so turned on? ‘Okay, close your eyes and try to speed.’ His voice was thick. He removed her thin dupatta from her stomach and placed his big palm on her soft, flat belly.

Now that he was so close, Nayantara couldn’t help but admire his harsh features. His impenetrable eyes. His broad shoulders. His solid torso. His muscled arms and thick biceps. He was massaging her belly like it was the most important task in the world. A small smile tugged on her lips as she remembered how much she was scared of his appearance on their first night.

Suddenly, he looked at Nayantara, and she lowered her gaze. ‘I said try to sleep, Nayantara. Are you feeling better now?’ He brushed off a thick, long strand of her hair out of her face.

Nayantara shook her head. ‘I feel like crying.’

Siddhant tensed again. ‘Oh my god, is it hurting that much?’

Nayantara shook again. ‘I want to cry because my husband is not talking to me.’

Siddhant stared at her for a moment, and then his face broke into a smile. He collected her in his arms and squeezed her affectionately. ‘My drama queen.’ His anger had vanished the moment he saw her little effort to please him by cooking food for him. But he wanted to tease her a little, so he extended the matter this far and enjoyed her food every day.

‘I’m sorry, my lord. I was so rude to you,’ she said as she buried her face in his chest.

‘Did you take that weird herb?’ he asked in a serious tone.

‘No. It has not been delivered yet.’

‘Please don’t take it unless necessary. I don’t trust it.’

‘I will not,’ she reassured him.

Siddhant kissed her temple and inhaled her sweet, refreshing scent.

‘Don’t take me wrong, my lord. I just want to know my husband and family before taking the next step.’

Siddhant’s heart sank. He wanted a child. A sweet, cute baby girl. He knew she couldn’t take Aayushi’s place. Her place would always remain empty in his heart. But at least his dead heart would beat a little. He didn’t want to wait. But of course, he couldn’t put the burden of his wishes on Nayantara. He could understand she was young and wanted to fly without responsibility. He forced a reassuring smile on his face as he said, ‘I will not force you for anything. And by the way, I already have a grumpy baby to deal with.’ He tapped on her small, pointy nose with his fingertip.

‘I’m not a grumpy baby.’ She slapped his chest.

‘Yes, you are. My spoiled princess,’ Siddhant said as he pulled her over his torso and kissed her cheek harshly.

Nayantara squealed with delight. ‘Ahhh… my lord… you will swell my cheek.’

‘Don’t complain. You deserve it. You were so naughty today,’ Siddhant said, and the room filled with Nayantara’s laughs and giggles as he showered, pampered, and tickled her with his wet kisses.

14 Pleasure trip

A few days passed. Nayantara didn’t realize how much she had healed in the last few days. After eleven years, she was now freely smiling and laughing. She was enjoying her life. Her husband. Her new family. Her surroundings. She was always busy during the day since she had some new information about Maharav. She found out that the people of Maharav were not happy with the king. Siddhant was so engrossed in wars for the last few years that he didn’t pay any attention to public interest work. She had to do something about this before it was too late. She decided to do it herself. She was the queen after all. And looking after her people was her duty. She had big funds for her personal use and charity work. She could use it, so she didn’t need to bother Siddhant for anything. She wanted to do more than charity. She would help her people grow. But even after a tight schedule, she always had lunch with her family. Padmini was still not talking to her. But Siddhant, Aditya, and dadi ma were there. She used to play chess with Aditya in the evening. She didn’t like to play with Siddhant, as she easily gave him a checkmate in just a few moves. He always lost to her. But Aditya was really good at chess and was able to give her a tough fight. Then she used to have dinner with Siddhant. Her herb arrived and she securely placed it in her cupboard. But Siddhant didn’t try to get intimate with her. He kissed her, hugged her, held her, but not more than that. Maybe he was serious about not touching her. But she would deal with his annoyance at the right time.

She now started enjoying her journey and not yearning for the destination all the time. But one thing had not changed yet. Her trust issues. She still didn’t trust anyone with her past and her safety. Not even Siddhant. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t forget that Siddhant couldn’t save his wives and daughter. He thought their deaths were natural. Unfortunate events. But she knew it was not. Siddhant was capable of protecting her from the entire world, but not from the dangers in the palace.

Vida was doing her work, but they still didn’t get anything useful.

‘Nayantara…’ A deep voice called her, and she looked up with a smile, putting the quill aside.

‘My lord, you are here at this time?’ she asked. It was afternoon. Siddhant was often busy at this time.

Siddhant raised his brow. ‘Why is there any specific time to meet the queen?’

Nayantara held her head high as she said, ‘Yes, the queen doesn’t meet anyone without an appointment.’

‘Apologies, my lady. Next time, I will come with an appointment. But for now, if the Queen allows, can I talk to my wife?’

Nayantara giggled. ‘What is it, my lord?’

‘Since we got married, we haven’t spent any quality time together. So get ready, we are going out for two days.’

Nayantara jumped on her feet. ‘Really?’ she said excitedly. She had not gone out anywhere for the last eleven years.

Siddhant chuckled at her enthusiasm. ‘Yeah, pack your things. We will leave in an hour.’

‘Thank you, my lord.’ She threw her arms around Siddhant and gave him a quick hug before she ran away to get ready.

Siddhant smiled and walked away to see the arrangements. He came back after some time and went to the dressing room to change his clothes. Nayantara was nowhere to be seen. He walked to the bathroom, and there she was, still inside the pool.

‘You are still taking the bath. Get ready, princess. We are getting late,’ Siddhant said annoyingly.

Nayantara suddenly got alert. ‘Yeah, yeah, my lord. I’m coming.’

Siddhant shook his head and walked away.

Nayantara stared at Vida. ‘See, Vida, I told you this is not the right time to take a bath.’

‘But you are going for your pleasure trip. You have to look beautiful,’ Vida said.

Nayantara raised her brows. ‘Pleasure trip?’

Vida giggled. ‘Yeah, that is what everyone is talking about — that the king will make love to you for two days.’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘Wow. You guys are just impossible. You have nothing to do except gossip.’

Vida giggled again.

Nayantara thinned her brows. ‘What? There is something else?’

Vida shook her head, smiling. ‘No, nothing.’

‘What is it, Vida?’ Nayantara asked in a demanding voice.

‘They say after this trip you will not be able to walk for a week.’

Nayantara’s eyes widened. ‘If you guys keep talking like this, I will fire all of you.’

Vida shuddered. ‘No, my lady, it was not me. I even scolded them to not talk about the king and queen’s personal life.’

‘Okay, okay, now get me ready.’

Siddhant sat on the couch and read the book to kill some time. It felt like hours when finally Nayantara walked out of the dressing room.

Siddhant stood up. ‘What took you so long…’ he shouted at her, but stopped abruptly as his eyes fell on her.

She looked stunning in a navy blue colored lehenga with mirror work on the border. She loved mirror work. Her blouse was tight and revealing, with a net dupatta, elevating the outfit with its sheer texture. Her hair was open, just some of her strands were tied with an elegant hair brooch. She wore a small pearl nose stud, pearl necklaces, earrings, and bangles. Her look was simple yet plushy.

Siddhant leaned in and kissed her cheek, inhaling her freshly bathed aroma. ‘You look lovely. Sexy actually.’

A blush made its way to her cheeks. ‘You look great yourself,’ she said timidly as she placed her tiny hand on his chest. Siddhant was in a plain light green kurta and off white pajamas without his royal coat and crown.

‘Everything is ready, my lady.’ Vida interrupted their moment, and Nayantara immediately stepped back, making Siddhant grunt in annoyance.

‘I’m waiting for you in the chariot,’ he said, and he walked away.

Vida lowered her gaze. ‘Sorry to disturb you, my lady, but all your stuff is here. Do you want to check it or you want me to send them?’ Vida said. She was also coming with two other maids.

Nayantara shook her head in disbelief as she saw three big trunks. ‘Vida, we are just going for two days. Not two months.’

‘I know, my lady. But I cannot compromise with your beauty and comfort.’

‘Whatever, just send it. The Lord will kill me if I make him wait any longer,’ Nayantara said, and she ran out of the chamber.

They sat on the chariot, drawn by two big, strong, white horses.

‘Oh, this is so comfortable than a palanquin,’ Nayantara said as the chariot started.

‘If you would agree to sit on a horse, we could travel even faster,’ Siddhant said.

‘I’m scared.’

‘What is scary about that?’ he said in a scolding tone. ‘I will sit behind you and control the horse. Don’t you trust me?’

‘No. I don’t want to sit on the horse.’

‘When we come back, we will go back to the palace on the horse. Whether you want it or not.’

‘I will not sit.’ Nayantara pouted and looked away.

It took about an hour or so when they reached the river bank. They stepped out of the chariot and started walking on the soft sand.

Nayantara scanned the area as she said, ‘Where are we going? I think this is the longest river of Maharav, isn’t it?’

Siddhant gave her an impressed look. ‘Your knowledge about Maharav’s geography is good. Yes, this is the longest river of Maharav.’

‘So where are we… Oh my god…’ Nayantara was about to ask, but her voice came out in a scream. ‘Is it a houseboat?’

Siddhant chuckled. ‘Yes, princess, it is a houseboat.’

‘Yes, we will travel through the river.’ She twirled in delight. She removed her clogs and picked them up in one hand as she ran towards the boat, enjoying the soft, wet sand under her feet. Siddhant laughed and followed her.

It was a beautiful, artistic barge. Its wooden body, weathered and seasoned, spoke of countless voyages and sun-drenched days. Atop the hull, a spacious living area stretched outwards, enclosed by walls of polished wood and large windows offering panoramic views. The open deck, a perfect spot for soaking in the scenery, was adorned with comfortable seating and perhaps a low table for leisurely meals.

There were a few more boats for other staff and the guards. But they were not luxurious like this.

Siddhant stepped into the boat and held out his hand for Nayantara. She placed her tiny hand into his big palm, and he pulled her in. She tripped over her skirt and collided with Siddhant’s chest.

‘Careful, princess,’ Siddhant said with a smile and led her inside.

Nayantara’s eyes roam over the exterior. There were two bedrooms, snug and cozy, outfitted with comfortable beds.

The late afternoon sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues of orange and pink. The houseboat started and glided gracefully across the water. They sat on the open deck of the houseboat, the gentle sway of the water rocking them softly.

Siddhant’s heart skipped a beat as Nayantara brushed her incredibly long, flowing hair out of the way and leaned against his shoulder, her eyes closed, the warmth of the setting sun on her skin.

‘This is perfect,’ she sighed, contentment radiating from her voice. ‘Just us, the water, and this beautiful scenery.’

Siddhant smiled. ‘Yeah, I don’t know when I last took a vacation.’

‘This is so much more relaxing than the palace chaos,’ Nayantara mused. ‘No crowds, just pure peace and quiet.’

The lush green landscape unfolded before them. Tall trees swayed lazily in the breeze, their fronds rustling like whispering secrets. Tiny villages dotted the shoreline, smoke curling from thatched roofs like wispy dreams. The chirping of crickets and the distant calls of birds were weaving through the air.

‘You know, I used to go on ferry rides with my parents. My father also had this kind of houseboat. But his barge was a little bigger and new,’ Nayantara said.

Siddhant thinned his brows. ‘Yeah, I know; at that time, Anhilwara was wealthier than Maharav. But now Maharav is not any less. If the Queen of Maharav wants a new, bigger barge, then her wish will be granted,’ he said, and Nayantara slapped his bicep playfully.

‘I didn’t mean that.’

Siddhant looked up at the sky. ‘You see, father-in-law, how your daughter is treating your son-in-law. She hits me all the time. I still try to make your daughter happy in every way. And I must say, keeping your daughter happy is not an easy task. She has a lot of demands and complains.’

Nayantara laughed and slapped him again as she also looked up at the sky. ‘Yes, father, your son-in-law is the best. He is kind and brave like you. And you must be proud of him that he has won everything back, along with your daughter’s heart. Wish you were here,’ she said, and her eyes turned watery. She lowered her gaze to hide it.

‘Hey,’ Siddhant wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close, and Nayantara buried her face in his shoulder.

‘I miss him. I miss my parents.’ Her voice cracked.

Siddhant rubbed her back. ‘Hey, princess, don’t be sad. They will always want to see you smiling.’

She nodded against his shoulder. Siddhant noticed how every time she hid her tears. She never let him see her tears.

They sat like that and enjoyed each other’s warmth, nature, and peace around them.

After some time, their boat stopped, and another boat came near them. They placed a plank of wood between them, and Vida came, followed by two guards who had carried their food.

They placed everything on the small table in front of them, and Vida served the food.

‘Vida,’ Suddenly, Siddhant said, making Vida look up at him, but she immediately lowered her gaze as the king had such a dominant personality that caused fear in anyone just by his look.

‘Yes, my lord,’ she said in a small voice.

‘You stay here. It is dangerous to cross the boat like this,’ Siddhant said as he just noticed poor safety arrangements for women.

‘Yeah, the Lord is right,’ Nayantara agreed. ‘You stay here.’

Vida shook her head. ‘No, my lady, I’m fine. I don’t have any problem. In fact, this is adventurous.’

‘No, Vida…’

‘Please, my lady, the other maids are there. I will be bored here.’ Vida didn’t want to violate their privacy with her presence.

‘Okay, as you wish,’ Nayantara said, and she looked at the guards. ‘Take care of Vida when she crosses the boat.’

‘We will, my lady,’ the guards said in unison.

They ate dinner under the dark, velvety sky, covered with uncountable stars. The food was simple, as they couldn’t cook so many dishes on the boat. There was just one sabzi, chapatis, and salad.

After finishing dinner, they made some small talk. Siddhant removed his kurta to enjoy the cold wind. Nayantara watched him with passion-filled eyes. She slowly stood up and sat on Siddhant’s lap. Siddhant smiled and wrapped his arm around her, kissing her jaw softly. She sat there without saying anything. Her one hand went to his hair while her other hand traced a small scar on his neck. ‘Your scars are so sexy, my lord,’ she muttered.

Siddhant laughed. ‘I would make more scars if it gets me the attention of my pretty wife.’

‘How many wars have you fought?’

‘Nayantara, I don’t want to talk about wars,’ Siddhant said dryly.

‘Yeah, right, let’s get inside.’ She stood up and pulled his arm.

‘No, I would like to sleep under the open sky. You can sleep into the bedroom.’

Nayantara cleaned her fists. ‘Stand up and follow me,’ she shouted. She was tired of his distant behavior.

He eyed her confusedly at her sudden outburst. ‘What happened?’

‘I said stand up.’

He stood, and she held his hand and dragged him into the bedroom.

She pushed him on the bed and bent over him. Her hand reached the knot of his lower, but Siddhant held her wrist. ‘What are you doing, Nayantara?’

‘Are we here just to see water? We are newly married.’

Siddhant smirked. ‘Yeah, I’m aware of it. But I don’t want you to regret it the next day and shout at me for no reason.’

Nayantara gritted her teeth. ‘Siddhant, enough of that. I’ve already apologized to you. And don’t act like you are a saint and you don’t want this,’ she said, looking down at a tent in his lower. ‘Now be a good boy, or I will tie you up.’

Siddhant laughed, his chest rumbling with amusement. She was cute when she acted dominant. Nayantara untied the knot of his lower and removed it. He was all hard and ready to penetrate her.

Siddhant grabbed her arm and pulled her over him. ‘Don’t provoke me like this, Nayantara. I’ve not forgotten how you rejected me on our wedding night and then kept me waiting for a week,’ he said as he captured her lips and sucked them passionately. His hands moved to the strings of her blouse and pulled them open. Nayantara moaned into his mouth. She could feel his rough palm all over her bare back.

She pulled away as she went out of breath. Siddhant hurriedly removed the blouse hanging on her shoulders. He opened the knot of her skirt and got rid of it as well. Nayantara sat on his firm stomach and started removing her jewelry. Siddhant’s eyes darkened as they roamed over her glorious body, taking in her smooth, delicate curves. Nayantara felt heated under his intense gaze and tried to focus on removing her bangles.

‘You are so pretty,’ he said as his hand went between her legs. She jolted as his hand touched her sensitive clit.

‘Siddhant… wait a moment…’ she said as she struggled with her earring.

He chuckled. ‘You are so sensitive,’ he said as he rubbed her clit, enjoying how she couldn’t focus on her task. At last, she removed her hair brooch and took a sharp breath, letting her hair completely open.

‘Next time you remove my jewelry,’ she said annoyingly.

‘Why don’t you wear those rags when we’re alone? You look sexy in it. And so convenient for me.’

Nayantara blushed as she remembered that embarrassing moment of their first night.

His thick, rough fingers continued the magic until she started shuddering. He pushed his fingers into her hole, and she cried in pleasure. ‘Aah, warm and wet.’

‘I want you inside me, my lord,’ she heaved.

‘Go on,’ he said, his voice thick with desire.

Nayantara gulped and slowly lowered herself onto him. She gasped as she felt his rigid length deep inside her.

Siddhant grunted as her tight muscles clenched around his girth. She pushed her hair back and placed her hands on his chest as she began to rock on him.

Siddhant groaned in pleasure. ‘That’s right. Just like that. You’re doing really good.’

Nayantara breathed out as she felt him grow even bigger inside her.

Siddhant reached up and grabbed her soft breasts and played with her buds.

He growled as her slick, velvety walls started clenching him hard. He knew she was close, and he took over thrusting. He held her hips, helping her to move against him. She let out a breathy cry as she trembled over him.

Her orgasm waned, but Siddhant was still building. He flipped her over, laying her on her back.

He caught hold of her thin wrists with one hand, pinning them above her head. Her breasts pert and he leaned in, kissing and sucking her buds. He spread her legs wide and forced himself into her with one thrust.

Nayantara cried in pain, but Siddhant sealed her lips with his. He gave her a few soft kisses to make her calm and started thrusting into her again.

Nayantara’s moans echoed in the quiet atmosphere.

She wrapped her legs around him as he hit her sweet spot. ‘Ahhh… Siddhant… there…’

‘I know… princess… you are more sensitive there,’ he said confidently as he picked up his pace, making her scream in pleasure as he hit the spot every time. She lay pinned as he pounded into her. Faster and faster.

‘Siddhant…’ she cried as strong pleasure built up inside her. Her body writhed beneath him.

‘Yes, princess, come for me,’ he coaxed. Her tight, tender tissues cleaned him with each spasm of her body. He slowed his strokes, letting her ride out the orgasm. He left her wrists, which were swollen from chafing. He softly kissed her lips.

Nayantara closed her eyes in contentment. She was spent and finished. But to her shock, Siddhant was not done with her yet, and he flipped her on her stomach. He didn’t give her any moment of rest, and he entered her from behind.

‘Ahhh… Siddhant… it is hurting now,’ Nayantara cried breathlessly.

‘Relax for me, love. You can take it.’ His hand grabbed her messed up hair into a bun and kissed her nape. She arched her shoulders as he sucked there harshly, leaving bruises. He continued to kiss her shoulder as his one hand cupped her breast and the other hand went between her legs, massaging her clit.

‘Siddhant…’ She shivered under him. She felt extremely timid and helpless in this position.

‘Calm down, princess.’ He gave her a few slow thrusts, letting her feel every inch of his length before he picked up his pace. He pressed her breasts from behind while thrusting hard and fast. She was moaning in pain and pleasure, fisting the bedsheet as hard as possible. Her walls expanded and contracted with his each thrust. He was harsh, raw, and dominating.

Her body shuddered again as another orgasm hit her. Her body went limp, but Siddhant held her tight and continued his invasion.

Nayantara’s throat went dry from all the crying. It felt like hours when she finally felt him throbbing inside her. He shouted her name in pleasure, and then he pulled out of her. Nayantara’s body went slack on the bed. Siddhant grabbed the tablecloth that covered the side table and filled it with his release.

As his orgasm subsided, he crawled to her and lay beside her. He turned her on her back and pulled her into his arms. ‘You are amazing, princess.’ He peeled a sweat-slicked strand of hair off her forehead and pushed it back out of her face.

Her body was heaving against him. Her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes were heavy with sleep.

‘Thank God, you didn’t leave me. Or the entire Maharav would gossip about me that I couldn’t satisfy my queen, so she left me within a week.’

Nayantara playfully slapped his chest. ‘You are overly sensual. You exhausted me completely.’

‘I will try to be gentle next time,’ he said honestly.

Nayantara rolled her eyes. ‘I doubt it.’

Siddhant noticed her hoarse voice. He sat up and took the glass of water from the side table. ‘Here,’ He lifted her head and brought the glass to her lips.

She took a few gulps before she said, ‘My lord?’

‘Hm,’

‘You didn’t have to control yourself. I have that herb now,’ she said.

Siddhant growled in annoyance. ‘Don’t you dare take that evil thing.’

Nayantara chuckled. She didn’t know why he hated that herb so much. ‘Relax, my lord, I will not take it without your consent,’ she said, and she snuggled into his chest. She didn’t want to ruin the moment.

Siddhant gave her some more water before he covered themselves with the comforter.

Siddhant held her close. She was a new ray in his life.

Nayantara passed out in the bliss of his arms, and when her eyes opened, it was morning. She didn’t want to wake up, but they had just two days to roam.

Nayantara slowly sat up and stretched her arms above her head. The door of her room was open, and she could see Siddhant sitting on the open deck in just his loin. She took her dupatta and wrapped it around her. She stood up, and the soreness instantly hit her. She smiled with the effect of pain, remembering the thickness of his manhood. She slowly walked outside.

Siddhant’s heart raced as she approached him in just a sheer dupatta around her. He took a sharp breath to keep his lust under control. He observed her face and relaxed as he saw a smile on her lips. He was worried that she might wake up with pain. She blushed as their eyes met. Siddhant grabbed her arm and made her sit on his strong thighs. Her face was glowing, with a pink tint on her cheeks.

‘Good morning, princess,’ he said, kissing her neck, savoring the taste of her skin. He loved the way she smelled. He loved the way she felt in his arms.

‘What is today’s plan?’ Nayantara asked eagerly.

‘I want to fuck my wife all day,’ Siddhant said shamelessly, and Nayantara’s eyes widened in horror. ‘But I don’t think you can take it anymore, so we will go to the forest.’

‘Forest?’ Her eyes lit up with childlike excitement.

‘Yes, there is a beautiful waterfall you would like to see. But if you are sore, we can just rest.’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘No, I want to go.’

Those two days were complete heaven for Nayantara. Nature, peace, and pleasure. Her days were adventurous, and her nights were sleepless as her lord husband rode her relentlessly. She almost forgot about all her worries and missions. When the trip ended, she didn’t want to go back. She stubbornly insisted Siddhant to extend the trip, but he couldn’t spare that much time. He had a giant empire to look after. It was already four days and three nights if he counted the days of arrival and departure. Nayantara got heartsick at his refusal and only agreed to go back when Siddhant promised her that he would take her on the trip again.

And as he had said, they went back to the palace on the horse. At first she was scared and sat clinging to Siddhant, but then slowly she started enjoying the ride. She felt like flying in the air. When she reached the palace, exhaustion hit her all of a sudden. Siddhant immediately separated from her and made his way to the throne hall. Nayantara ran straight to her chamber. She was sore down there, and the horse ride added fuel to it. Her thighs were chafed raw, and the muscles of her legs and back were so wracked with pain that she dropped herself on the bed and fell asleep in no time. She didn’t even have the strength to eat or take a bath. Vida was right, it was a pleasure trip.

15 Anhilwara is plotting something

It was midnight. Nayantara was standing on the balcony. Her long hair was open and flowing in the air. Her eyes were closed, and pain was written all over her face. Whenever she thought her life was smooth and her wounds were healing, something would happen that would rip open all her wounds again.

It had been two and a half months, and everything was good in her life when she got the news that Vishakha was pregnant. That means her uncle would have an heir now. Heir of Anhilwara and Patyal. She was expecting something like this from Vishkha. She knew Vishakha would try to get pregnant as soon as possible. So her son could claim the Anhilwara throne and not Nayantara’s. Her uncle also gifted her the castle in the air for giving him such good news. The same castle where their wedding happened. The castle was made by Nayantara’s great-grandfather, and then her father renovated it and added a few more towers to its glory. And now her uncle gave it to his daughter just like that. And if this was not enough, her mother-in-law taunted her every day that how good daughter-in-law, Vishakha, was. Nayantara should learn something from her little sister. Like producing a baby was some kind of achievement. She scolded Siddhant too that what kind of man he was who had control over his wife. The way she was getting angry at Nayantara and Siddhant, Nayantara had suspected that she knew about the herb she had asked from the physician. However, Siddhant took everything on him to protect Nayantara from condemnation. He said he didn’t want a child yet. Nayantara felt so bad for him. She knew he wanted a child, but still, he heard every ill thing because of her. Dadi ma never said bitter words to Nayantara, but she always blessed her for having a child whenever she touched her feet. Sometimes those blessings felt like pressure and expectation.

Nayantara was hurt and frustrated. A woman had no value without her husband and child. She didn’t care what Vishkha was doing in her life. But why did everyone expect her to do what Vishakha did? Just because Vishakha was having a child, she had to do the same. Why didn’t they understand that her and Vishkha’s circumstances were different. Vishakha had a wonderful childhood. A dream wedding. A most handsome prince. While Nayantara had a dark past. A forced marriage. A husband with a shady past. Vishakha could see her life in a positive way, as she never tasted grief. She never drank the poison of humiliation. She didn’t know the pang of betrayal.

Nayantara took a sharp breath. How cruel life was! How someone’s happiness became someone else’s misery.

Her chain of thoughts broke as two large arms came from behind and engulfed her in a tight embrace.

‘What’s my princess doing here all alone?’ Siddhant said as he pushed away her hair and kissed her shoulder. His hand touched her breast, and he couldn’t help but cup it. He smiled as he felt it slightly bigger. She had gained a little weight in the last one month and her poking bones finally began to fill out. She really needed to plump up a little. She was all skin and bones.

Nayantara didn’t say anything. She just rested her head on his chest, inhaling his comforting scent.

‘Don’t be sensitive to what my mother says. I will talk to her. She will not presurase you for anything.’

Nayantara turned around to look into his eyes. ‘I can take anything. But I can’t hear a word against you.’

Siddhant laughed softly. He felt blessed to see how much she was fond of him. ‘It’s okay, princess. It doesn’t bother me.’

‘But it bothers me. It hurts me. You shouldn’t take the blame on you,’ she cried, her voice laced with care and possessiveness for her husband.

‘Nayantara, it’s okay. Why do you care what they think?’ Siddhant said softly, but Nayantara was in no mood to calm.

‘I don’t want to, they are provoking me. It is just two and a half months of our marriage, and they already want a child. They don’t have any patience.’

‘Just ignore them.’

‘How could I?’ Nayantara flared up. ‘I don’t understand why Vishkha deserves so much respect? Like she did some kind of miracle. Like she found a cure for a malignant disease.’

Siddhant shook his head, smiling. His wife and her temper. ‘Oh, my fierce queen, calm down,’ he said as he held her by the shoulders, his thumb rubbing her collarbone to soothe her anger.

Nayantara looked away with annoyance.

‘Okay, come here, I will make you feel better,’ Siddhant said as he pulled her close and scooped her up in his arms with such effortless strength it nearly stole Nayantara’s breath.

She wriggled in his arms. ‘Put me down, my lord. It’s late.’

‘So, is there any specific time to make love?’ he said as he carried her inside and dropped her on the bed.

Nayantara blinked at him with her long eyelashes. ‘Please, my lord, I won’t be able to get up early, and then you will scold me that I’m a spoiled princess.’

‘Oh, you’re a spoiled princess,’ he said as he approached her like a hungry wolf. He cupped her nap as he sucked the supple skin below her jawline. ‘I will eat you raw,’ he muffled, his breath hot against her skin.

Nayantara blushed and giggled. It was a long and frantic session. And by the time Siddhant finished with her, she passed out with exhaustion and forgot about all her worries.

The next day, she woke up early. For the last one month, she was used to waking up early, even before Siddhant, as she was doing a lot of things these days. She was focusing on the development of people and the kingdom, which Siddhant used to ignore in his war activities. She had hired some officials to look after these works. She had started so many projects. She was making some schools, infirmaries, stepwells, and ponds according to the requirements of specific villages and cities. But now she had a hurdle in her way. Her queen’s funds were almost finished, and she still had a lot to do. So today she was going to ask the minister for more funds. She could directly ask Siddhant, but it was not for her personal use, so she decided to follow the procedure.

Siddhant had no idea what she was doing, and he didn’t make an effort to know. He had his own issues. In the north, Ghan was raising its army. The civil war was somehow under control, but Jakat was still creating the conflict on the border.

Nayantara stood up, and one last time, she glanced at herself in the mirror. She looked lively in peacock green attire. She came out of the dressing room and found Siddhant was still asleep. She walked to his side and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. ‘Good morning, my lord,’ she said and walked away, but Siddhant held her arm and pulled her back, making her fall on his chest.

Nayantara glared at him. ‘My lord, you will ruin my clothes. I have a meeting with my officials.’

‘What meeting, Nayantara,’ Siddhant said irritably. ‘What are you so busy with that you do not have a moment for me?’

‘I had told you. I have decided to do something for our people.’

‘Yeah, yeah, your charity work and all that.’

‘Not charity work, my lord. I’m making…’

‘Whatever, Nayantara. Just give me a proper kiss, and then you can go.’

Nayantara shook her head. Why did he have no interest in what she was doing? He should take some interest, as it was about his people. Pushing her thoughts aside, she placed her lips on his. Siddhant sighed in bliss as her soft lips slowly moved against his. She slipped her tongue into his mouth, letting him test her fresh breath, while Siddhant’s breath was rotten as he had just woken up. After giving him a slow, deep, passionate kiss, Nayantara pulled away and looked into his eyes. ‘Happy now?’

‘Very,’ he said as he let her go.

Nayantara walked away, and Siddhant sat up to get ready. His day passed with the same routine. And at the end of the day, the minister of Maharav came to him. Siddhant was with Aditya, talking on Jakat matter.

‘Can I have a minute with you, my lord? Alone,’ he added the last word slowly.

Siddhant thinned his brows. What was so serious that he couldn’t speak in front of Aditya? Before Siddhant could say anything, Aditya spoke up, ‘Sure, Mister Minister, I was about to leave anyway.’ He stood up and left the room.

‘What is it?’ Siddhant asked.

‘Auh, actually, I got an application from the queen. She wanted some extra money in the queen’s funds.’

Siddhant sighed with relief. He thought it was something serious. ‘If the queen wants extra money, then give it to her. Why are you asking me?’

‘I would have. It is just that she wants 2 lakh gold coins… so I thought I should have asked you once…’

‘What?’ Siddhant said with a little shock. ‘2 lakh gold coins? Is she making a palace or what? Do you know why she wants it?’

‘She didn’t mention it in the application. And I couldn’t ask the queen.’

Siddhant’s hand went to his beard as he thought for a moment. He had no idea why she wanted so much money. But if she wanted it, he would give it to her without any question. After all, she had never asked for anything. This is the least he could do for her. ‘Give as much as she wants,’ he stated.

‘Okay, my lord.’ the minister bowed his head and walked out.

A few more days passed. Nayantara was sitting in the meeting area of her chamber with some of the officials she had appointed. She had completely thrown herself into the work to forget about Vishakha. Now that she had more money, she had accelerated the projects. She couldn’t believe Siddhant didn’t ask her any questions. It was not possible that such a huge amount would go into the queen’s funds, and the king would not be aware of it. Or maybe he already knew everything, so he was okay with it.

‘So, what’s the update about Vaga and Lambha village?’ she asked.

‘Both work is done. Vaga village now has a stepwell. And school renovation has started in Lambha,’ one of the officials said.

‘And what about the infirmary in Sekim town?’

‘The work has started but, my lady, we need more money,’ another official said.

‘Have you come with expense statements?’

‘Yes, my lady,’ he said, and he handed her some papers.

Nayantara put the papers aside as she looked at him. ‘Okay, I will check it out and then release the funds.’

‘My lady,’ Suddenly, Abhay walked in and bowed his head. ‘Sorry to disturb you, my lady, but someone wants to meet you.’

Nayantara looked at the officials. ‘You all can go now.’

They bowed their heads and walked out, one by one. As they all left, Nayantara looked at Abhay. ‘What is it?’

‘It was your informant.’

‘Send him inside and make sure nobody else comes while I’m talking to him.’

‘Yes, my lady,’ Abhay walked out, and the informant came in.

Nayantara straightened her back. ‘Yes, Ganesh, what is the information?’ she asked desperately. She had her own men for all her personal tasks. Even Siddhant was not aware of some of her hidden activities.

‘I have found some activity in the castle. There are some people living there,’ Ganesh said.

‘Of course, it is a castle, so it needs staff to maintain it.’

‘Yes, they are staff to maintain the castle. But some of them are army men in normal dress.’

‘What? Are you sure?’

‘Yes, my lady, they are from both Patyal and Anhilwara.’

‘Do you know what they are doing there?’

‘Not yet.’

‘Then find out.’

‘Okay, my lady,’ Ganesh said, and before he could go, an enraged Siddhant walked in, thumping the entire room with his heavy footsteps.

Nayantara stood up, seeing her husband in furious form.

‘Privacy,’ Siddhant shouted, and a frightened Ganesh ran out of the room.

Siddhant turned to Nayantara with anger burning in his eyes. ‘Do you know what the hell your uncle is plotting behind my back…’

Nayantara held up her hand, making him stop in mid sentence. ‘I just got the news, and I am as shocked as you.’

‘As per the agreement, they couldn’t stand their army near Maharav’s border. Already Maharav’s army was protecting both borders. Then what is all this? Get one thing straight in your head, Nayantara, if your uncle plots anything against Maharav, I will not hesitate to kill him and his son-in-law and take complete control over Anhilwara.’

Like I care! She muttered under her breath.

Siddhant narrowed his eyes. ‘What did you say? I hope you have nothing to do with this?’

Nayantara eyed him shockingly. ‘Are you accusing me? I’m here in front of your eyes all the time. How could I plot anything?’

‘Oh, don’t look at me like this. We both know you are not innocent. You are perfectly capable of ruining any kingdom without even lifting your finger.’

A big smile spread across Nayantara’s lips as she said, ‘Thanks for the compliment, my lord, but I’m not behind this. And by the way, I’m already upset with my uncle’s decision. It is our ancestral castle. How could he give a part of Anhilwara to Patyal!’

‘Don’t worry, I will stop whatever they are planning.’

‘No, my lord, if we stop them right now. We will never find out their true intentions.’

‘Then should I wait for them to attack Maharav,’ Siddhant seethed.

‘Relax, my lord, my uncle will never fight directly with you. After my father’s death, Anhilwara’s army has become very weak.’

‘Then what do you want to do?’ Siddhant asked impatiently. He didn’t want to harm any of Nayantara’s family members. He didn’t want to hurt her wife. But Maharav was his top priority, so if someone posed a threat against his kingdom, he would have to take some strict action.

‘If you trust me, then leave this matter to me. I will handle Anhilwara and Patyal both.’

Siddhant sighed deeply. He thought for a moment and then decided to let Nayantara handle this in her own way, as he didn’t want a conflict with his in-laws. He had no idea that Nayantara didn’t care about her family at all. All she wanted was her revenge. ‘I trust you, Nayantara. But are you sure you want to be involved in this swamp?’

Nayantara gave a wry smile. ‘You think I’m not capable of playing dirty?’

Siddhant raised his brows. He stepped up to her and placed his arm around her waist, pulling her close. ‘Really?’ He stared into her eyes hungrily. ‘I didn’t know you could play dirty.’

Nayantara blushed and slapped his chest. ‘I mean in politics.’

‘I would like to see that side of yours one day.’ He winked before he walked out of the room.

Nayantara stood there alone. She had a wicked smile on her lips. Finally, she got the chance she wanted. ‘Get ready, uncle, for my first strike. I’ll show you hell.’

16 Evidence room

Nayantara yawned. She was lying on the swing, her head resting on the pillow. Her long, thick hair was flowing, and her dupatta swept the ground. Vida was sitting in front of her on a small stool. She was continuously babbling, telling Nayantara everything she had heard about Chitra and Mrignayani. Nayantara had chosen this idea as she had worked with the maids, so she knew the servants in the palace knew everything about their masters. Every dark and deepest secret. But in this case, she proved wrong. After so many days, she still didn’t get anything useful. Now she had to find some other way because this wasn’t going the way she wanted. All useless stuff.

‘And there is one sensitive information about Queen Chitra,’ Vida chuckled.

Another yawn escaped from Nayantara’s lips. ‘What is it?’ she asked lazily.

‘The king had a relationship with Queen Chitra even before their marriage,’ she slightly giggled as she continued with excitement in her voice. ‘And the king used to fuck her on the terrace before their marriage. And one day…’

‘Enough, Vida,’ Nayantara shouted as she sat up straight. The swing moved violently with her sudden movement. ‘I got it. I don’t want details. And I have asked you to bring some useful information. Not this kind of obscene thing.’

Vida’s face fell, and tears collected in her eyes. Nayantara never scolded her this badly. ‘I’m sorry, my lady.’

Nayantara took a sharp breath. She didn’t know why she got so angry. Maybe she was jealous. But why should she be jealous of Siddhant’s dead wife? She always hated the reality that Siddhant had two wives before her. ‘You can now go, Vida,’ she said dryly.

‘Auh, there is one more thing about Queen Mrignayani. She was…’

‘I don’t want to know how Siddhant fucked Mrignayani. You can go,’ Nayantara said bitterly.

Vida gulped before she said, ‘No, it is not that, my lady. It is different,’ Vida told her anyway, as it was her duty. ‘Queen Mrignayani was pregnant when she fell.’

Nayantara’s eyes widened in horror, her anger immediately replaced with tension. ‘What?’

‘Yes, my lady.’

‘But if that was the case, then the entire palace would know about her. At least Siddhant and the physician would know.’

‘No, my lady, it was not conform news. She just told her personal maid that she missed her menstruation, so maybe she was expecting. But before she could go to the physician or tell the king, that accident happened. She fell from the stairs and died.’

Nayantara placed her hand on her mouth to cover her shock, sweat broke out on her forehead. So she was right, those were murders. Someone was trying to kill Siddhant’s babies. So if she gets pregnant… Nayantara shuddered at the thought. She had to solve this mystery as soon as possible. But one thing was still unclear — why Aayushi? She was just a little girl. It was not that Siddhant was going to give her the throne. Nayantara’s head was racing. Whoever did this would be very powerful, as he dared to kill the king’s wives and daughter. Siddhant did the investigation, then why did nothing come out of it? She had to see the investigation report once. Maybe she might find a clue in it.

‘What happened, my lady? Are you all right?’ Vida asked worriedly, pulling her out of her thoughts.

Nayantara wiped the sweat with the back of her hand. ‘Yes, Vida. Finally, we had a major breakthrough. Good job,’ she said, her voice heavy with tension.

Vida blinked at her, confused. ‘What breakthrough, my lady?’

‘Your information confirmed that those were murders.’

‘How?’ Vida still didn’t understand anything.

Nayantara ignored her question as she said, ‘We have to go to the evidence room.’

‘What evidence room?’ Vida cried in absolute shock. ‘We cannot go there, my lady.’

Nayantara thinned her brows. ‘Why?’

‘That place is haunted. There are ghosts,’ Vida said in a very low voice, as if the ghosts would hear her if she raised her voice.

‘What nonsense! I don’t believe in all these.’

‘But I do, my lady. We shouldn’t go there.’

‘We are going, Vida, and that is final,’ Nayantara stated firmly.

‘But even if we go, the guards will not enter us. Nobody could go into the evidence room without permission. But as you are the queen, I think you can go.’

‘No, no, Vida, we have to do this without anyone noticing,’ Nayantara said. She couldn’t take the risk of alerting the killer. If he could kill a little girl and pregnant ladies, he wouldn’t hesitate to kill her. She had to be very careful at every step.

‘But how will we go there without anyone noticing? It is a highly secure room. There are guards protecting the room twenty-four seven.’

Nayantara’s eyes lit up as she said, ‘I have a plan.’

The evidence room was located in the south wing. A long, deserted corridor led the way, lined with numerous locked doors keeping their secrets hidden. The evidence room had just one door to enter and exit, constantly guarded by a pair of vigilant sentinels.

It was morning, and everyone was busy with their daily chores when Nayantara and Vida made their way to the evidence room with a small rabbit with them. They stopped at a safe distance and hid behind the pillar.

‘The shift will change now. Are you ready, Vida?’ Nayantara asked.

‘I’m scared, my lady,’ Vida said, clinging the rabbit against her chest.

‘There is nothing to be scared of. If something goes wrong, then I will protect you. Get ready.’

Vida nodded.

The other two guards came to replace the night shift guards. The night guards walked away even before the morning guards took their place. Nayantara was expecting something like this. She knew human nature. There was no one in this world who did their work honestly. That’s why she chose this time. And before the morning guards reached the door, Nayantara threw a stone, which hit the door on the far side of the corridor.

The stone created a light thud sound and fell to the ground. The morning guards directly walked in the direction of the sound. With their focus diverted, the door to the evidence room stood unguarded, ripe for Nayantara’s next move.

‘Now, Vida,’ Nayantara said, and Vida put the rabbit down, making him run into the open door. They had given a week of training to this rabbit. The rabbit had to hide at the far end of the room in the darkest corner, where nobody could find him.

But as the rabbit ran inside, one of the guards, named Saju, stopped midway, feeling something passed behind him, realizing his mistake — that they both shouldn’t leave the place. He turned back and scanned the area. Nothing.

‘What happened, Bali?’ Saju stood at the door and asked the other one.

‘There is a small stone here,’ Bali said.

‘Where did the stone come from?’

Bali shrugged. ‘I don’t know, maybe…’

‘Leave it. It is just a stone,’ Saju said.

Bali came back to his position, and Nayantara gestured Vida.

Vida swallowed hard as she came out of the pillar and walked towards the evidence room. ‘Chiku… where are you, Chiku… Come out… I will give you a carrot.’ She ran through the corridor like a lost girl and tried to enter the evidence room like she didn’t notice the guards.

‘Hey, girl, where are you going?’ Bali growled, stopping her way.

‘My Chiku has come in this direction. Maybe he is inside,’ Vida peeped like a small girl.

‘Go away, you stupid girl. This is a prohibited area. No Chiku is here,’ Saju snapped.

Vida stood adamantly. ‘No, I’m sure he is inside. Let me see once.’

‘Have you lost your head, girl?’ Bali said. ‘Going into this room is a punishable act.’

‘Why?’ Vida asked innocently.

‘Because this is evid…’

‘What’s going on here?’ Nayantara suddenly appeared there. And everyone stopped the argument hearing the queen’s authoritative tone.

‘My lady!’ The guards bowed their heads.

‘What are you doing here, Vida? I was waiting for you in the inventory room,’ Nayantara said. The inventory room was in the next corridor. So it was the best lie. And everyone knew Nayantara was involved in so many activities of the palace.

‘I was coming. But then suddenly, Chiku jumped out of my arms and ran somewhere. I was looking for him and came here,’ Vida said.

‘No one has entered, my lady. We are here all the time,’ Bali said.

‘Actually, Chiku is a rabbit.’ Nayantara informed the guards before she glared at Vida. ‘Why did you bring that rabbit in? Are you here to serve me or play with the rabbit?’

Vida lowered her gaze. ‘I didn’t want to. He followed me. So I…’

‘Okay, okay,’ Nayantara said irritably before she turned to guards. ‘I’m not questioning your abilities, soldiers. But I think you guys should check it once. He is a nasty rabbit. If he is inside, then he could ruin everything there.’

‘As you say, my lady,’ the guards said. They couldn’t say no to the queen. They walked in and separated in different directions to find the rabbit.

As the guards disappeared from their sights, Nayantara stepped in. The place was huge, with a labyrinth of passages. The air in the room was thick with dust and a palpable weight of untold stories. Floor-to-ceiling cold metal shelves, crammed with manila folders and cardboard boxes, seemed to hold the faintest impressions of the crimes they housed. A single shaft of sunlight pierced through a high, grimy window, barely penetrating the oppressive darkness that clung to the corners.

She blinked her eyes to see into the darkness. Everything was arranged year wise. Her eyes quickly roamed on the year boards hanging at each entrance of the passage. Her heart was fluttering in her chest, and her throat went dry. She was the queen of Maharav, and here she was stealing documents. Spotting the passage she needed, she ran inside, thankfully her anklets were without bells, the way she liked. Inside the passages, cases were arranged month wise. There were many other things along with the papers, like murder weapons, the belongings of the victims and killers, and some skeletons.

Damn! I don’t know in which month this happened. I should have collected this information before coming here. Why did this thing slip from my head?

But it was now or never. Her eyes quickly scanned all the labels. The darkness of the room was creating further hindrances to her work. A few moments dragged by, and then she got the box she wanted. She extended her hand to pull out the folder, only then a lizard jumped in front of her, and she almost screamed. The folder fell from her hand. She staggered to her feet, and her back hit the shelf behind her. She bit down her lip to prevent a cry as something sharp cut her right leg. She turned around and found a rusty dagger, poking out of a box kept at the lower shelf. It could be a murder weapon or something. Nayantara lifted her skirt and found a stream of blood running down to her feet.

Damn! If the guards saw her blood, she would be in trouble. She quickly tore a piece of her dupatta and tied it around the cut on her calf, so her blood couldn’t leak everywhere. She quickly picked up the documents and fixed it securely beneath the string of her skirt and covered it with her dupatta. She ran towards the entrance. To her relief, Vida was still standing there alone. That means she did it in time.

‘My lady?’ Vida stepped up to her with a tense face.

‘Done,’ Nayantara said reassuringly. They waited a few more minutes before the guards came with the rabbit.

‘Here,’ Bali handed it to Vida angrily. ‘This rabbit is such an evil. He hid in such a dark corner that… anyway, we are leaving you just because you are the queen’s personal maid. Otherwise, right now, you would have stood in front of the king.’

Vida shuddered. ‘No, no, I’m sorry. I will never come here.’

‘Don’t worry. I will teach her lessons for her clumsiness. C’mon now,’ Nayantara scolded her, and they both walked away. Nayantara tried not to limp, as the guards could notice it. As they came into the chamber, Nayantara collapsed on the edge of the bed. She took out the folder and put it aside before she held her injured leg.

Vida sighed in relief. ‘You are so brave, my lady. I couldn’t go into that dark, scary place.’

Nayantara ignored her blah and lifted her skirt to see the damage.

‘Oh my god, what happened, my lady?’ Vida ran to Nayantara as she saw her blood covered leg.

‘I got hurt,’ Nayantara heaved. She didn’t feel any pain there, as her head was in a surviving mode. But now, coming back to her chamber, her leg was throbbing in unbearable pain.

‘Oh, no, I told you that place is haunted. Look, what happened to you!’

‘Stop this nonsense, Vida. It was a dragger or something, not a ghost,’ Nayantara said irritably, grimacing in pain.

Vida sat beside Nayantara’s leg and slightly lifted her leg. ‘Oh my god,’ she cried as she saw a blood-covered strip of dupatta. ‘Let me see,’ she said, and Nayantara hissed as she slowly removed the strip and more blood leaked from the wound. ‘No, no, no… I have to call the physician.’

‘Don’t worry, it will be alright. Just give me a proper bandage.’

‘It will not heal just like that, my lady. The cut is deep. You are bleeding. Let me call the physician,’ Vida said worriedly.

Nayantara shook her head. After her first meeting with the physician, she had doubts that there was some kind of protocol that everything about the queen’s health would be directly reported to the king. And if Siddhant found out, he would ask thousands of questions, and she would have to create a pile of lies.

‘Please, my lady, if something happens to you, the Lord will kill me,’ Vida pleaded.

‘And if he finds out what I did today, he will kill me. So go and give me the bandage,’ Nayantara stated firmly.

With a tired sigh, Vida walked away. Nayantara lay on the bed, her legs still hanging low, creating a pool of blood on the floor.

The sweat covered her forehead as she fought back the pain. She felt like crying. She was not weak, she used to work even when she was sick. But this was different. She had never been hurt like this before. She breathed heavily, trying hard not to freak out. Deep down, she knew the wound was fatal. What if it couldn’t heal properly?

Before Vida could return with a bandage, she heard the strong, masculine voice of her husband.

‘Nayantara…’

Her heart stopped dead.

17 She lies

Forgetting about the pain, Nayantara immediately jumped into action mode. She took the folder and hid it beneath the mattress. She stood up and adjusted her skirt, pulling it slightly down so she could hide her bloody feet completely. She took a step forward to hide the pool of blood she had created. By then, Siddhant had entered the chamber, and Nayantara took a sharp breath, collecting the strength to face him.

‘Where the hell have you been?’ Siddhant was beyond angry. Today was his father’s birth anniversary, so dadi ma had arranged bhajan, and she wanted Nayantara to attend it. Siddhant was going to join them at last. But when he reached the temple at the time of the final aarti, he found that Nayantara was not there. He sent the guard to call her so at least she could attend the aarti, but the guard came back with the news that the queen was not in the chamber.

Nayantara blinked at him confusedly. ‘What happened?’

Siddhant shook his head in disbelief. ‘So you don’t even remember? Great!’

‘What I don’t remember?’ Nayantara asked impatiently. The pain was making her restless. She could feel her blood dripping from the wound. That dragger had lacerated her skin badly.

‘Dadi ma and ma shri were waiting for you in the temple,’ Siddhant said, and Nayantara slapped her head. She was supposed to attend bhajans. How could she forget this?

‘Yes, you had to attend bhajans,’ Siddhant seethed. ‘When will you become a responsible daughter-in-law? Attending bhajan is too much for you? Do you know how you’ve disappointed dadi ma and ma.’

‘I’m sorry, my lord.’ Nayantara tried hard not to show pain in her voice or face. She desperately wanted to sit, as she was feeling dizzy because of the blood loss and throbbing pain in her leg.

‘What sorry, Nayantara. Do you know now how many things I have to hear? Now how will I cover up your negligence, huh?’ Siddhant said in a disappointing, scolding tone.

Nayantara lowered her eyes. Siddhant was already hearing a lot because of her, as he hadn’t yet impregnated his woman when the throne was waiting for an heir.

‘You are a great queen, Nayantara. But please show some responsibility towards your family as well,’ he said tiredly.

‘You don’t worry. I will talk to dadi ma. I will apologize to her. This wouldn’t happen again,’ Nayantara said in a small voice.

‘What was so important that you forgot everything? Where the hell have you been?’ Siddhant asked in a slow, but demanding voice.

‘Auh, I…’

‘And why are you sweating? Are you sick?’ His tone softened a little as he noticed her uneasy face. He touched her forehead and cheek with the back of his hand.

For a moment, Nayantara felt like running into his husband’s arms and told him how hurt she was. But she controlled her child-like urge and shook her head. ‘I’m all okay. The weather is hot today.’

Before Siddhant could say anything, Vida dashed in. ‘My lady, I got the bandage,’ she burst out before she could notice Siddhant.

Damn, Vida! Nayantara cried in her head. That is it. She was so dead.

‘Bandage?’ Siddhant narrowed his eyes. ‘Are you hurt, Nayantara?’

‘No, it is just…’ Nayantara’s tongue stumbled for the words.

Siddhant’s eyes roamed over her body. He gasped as he found blood on the edge of her skirt. ‘Are you bleeding? What happened?’ He knelt down and lifted her skirt. His eyes widened in horror as he found her right leg covered in blood. ‘Oh my god, how did this happen? Vida, call the physician.’

‘Yes, my lord.’ Vida immediately ran out of the chamber. That was what she wanted to do. She was relieved that the king was here. Now he would take care of everything.

‘C’mon, sit here and let me see.’ Siddhant made her sit on the bed, but Nayantara resisted.

‘No, my lord, I’m all right. It’s just a small cut.’

‘Shut your mouth if you don’t want a slap,’ Siddhant shouted.

Nayantara shuddered at the intensity of his voice. Siddhant pushed her onto the bed and lifted her skirt to her knees. He held her leg carefully to find the source of the blood. There was a nasty cut on her calf, and blood was seeping through it.

He looked up at her. He had anger and worry in his eyes. ‘How this happened, Nayantara?’

‘I… auh… actually… I was…’

‘My lord, the physician is here,’ Vida said as she dashed into the chamber. The physician, Devika, entered with her assistant, Nirali.

Siddhant stood up and stepped aside so the physician could see her wound.

Devika was a middle aged woman with a stern, serious face. She observed her wound and said instantly, ‘Lie down, my lady. We have to stitch the cut.’

‘What?’ Nayantara cried in shock. She had no experience of this. She had no idea how much it would hurt. ‘It is just a small cut. I don’t want stitches.’

Siddhant also tensed. His delicate princess couldn’t bear that much pain.

‘Take this. It will help you with pain,’ Devika said, forwarding a green paste.

Nayantara winced at the foul smelling paste. She shook her head. ‘No, just tie the bandage. I don’t need stitches.’

The physician looked at Siddhant.

Siddhant gave an understanding nod and took the paste from her hand. He turned to Nayantara. ‘Open your mouth.’

‘No, I don’t want this.’ Nayantara pushed his hand away. ‘Why don’t you guys understand I’m okay.’

‘Nayantara!’ Siddhant glared at her. He had a warning in his eyes. He didn’t want to scold her in front of the physician.

Nayantara gulped. ‘But, my lord…’

‘Open your mouth, Nayantara,’ he said in a strong, demanding voice.

Nayantara slightly parted her lips, and he slid the paste into her mouth. The moment it touched her tongue, the bitter taste spread into her mouth, and she started coughing badly, inclined to vomit.

Siddhant rubbed her back and offered her some water. ‘Swallow it, Nayantara. Don’t you dare throw up.’

It took a moment before Nayantara finally calmed down and swallowed that bitter thing.

‘Lie down, my lady,’ Devika said, and Nirali started preparing for the procedure.

Nayantara became more scared as she saw medical equipment. Tears gathered in her eyes. She didn’t know if she was strong enough to handle this pain. She had never cried in front of anyone. Not even her daai ma. She hated to show her weakness.

She looked at Siddhant. ‘My lord, I don’t want this. Ask the physician to leave.’ Her eyes pleading him silently.

Seeing her so vulnerable, Siddhant’s heart twisted in pain. He could read her fear. She was looking at him like a scared child. ‘This way it will heal faster, Nayantara,’ he said softly.

‘No, no, no… ask her to leave.’ Her voice broke as she knew that was not going to happen.

Siddhant let out a heavy sigh, unable to fulfill her wish. He sat beside her, collecting her in his muscled arms. ‘Don’t be scared, my love. I’m here with you. It will not take long,’ he cooed.

Nayantara lowered her eyes, breaking into a silent cry, as now there was no way to escape.

Without wasting more time, Siddhant made her lie on her stomach and took her head in his lap, caressing it lovingly.

Devika quickly started her work. Nayantara felt her skirt lift above her knees, and someone held her leg tightly. She couldn’t see what Devika was doing. But suddenly, her wound burned. She tried to twist away and lift her head to look there. But Siddhant placed her massive hand on her back, rubbing her softly. ‘It’s okay. Don’t look there. She is just cleaning the wound.’

Nayantara gritted her teeth as Devika started disinfecting the wound. Despite the sedatives, the wound was still burning like hell.

No, Nayantara, don’t cry. You can handle it. You can do this. She was chanting in her head, but the moment the needle inserted into her skin and the thread pulled her torn skin together, she lost all her control and cried out loudly. She tried to pull her leg, but Nirali had a firm grip on it, and Siddhant’s big palm was on her back, preventing all her movements. ‘No, no, I don’t want this. Please, my lord, make this stop,’ she wailed, making Siddhant’s heart squeeze in pain. He could take any number of wounds on himself, but seeing Nayantara in pain was just unbearable for him. She was so thin and delicate. Her fragile body couldn’t handle this much pain.

Siddhant stroked her head, his thumb rubbing her cheek lightly. ‘No, no, princess, don’t cry. It’ll be over in a moment.’

The needle kept piercing her soft tissues, and Nayantara buried her face in Siddhant’s lap. Her hands were clawing at Siddhant’s thick thighs.

‘Siddhant…’ she cried helplessly, a fresh layer of sweat broke her forehead.

‘I know, my princess. I know you are in pain. It is almost done.’ He kept saying her soothing words, his hands stroking her head and making slow circles on her back.

By the time the physician finished, Nayantara was a sobbing mess. Her wound was throbbing intensely. It just took a few movements, but Nayantara felt like eternity.

‘Shhh… Calm down, my love. It’s over. You are so brave,’ he cooed.

Nayantara kept sobbing in Siddhant’s lap, while Devika gave him all the instructions about her medicines and other care. ‘I will come tomorrow to change her bandage. She will have a little weakness because of the blood loss. But nothing to worry about.’ With that, Devika and her assistant walked out.

Siddhant looked at Vida, who was standing at the corner. ‘Arrange her lunch here.’

‘Yes, my lord,’ she said and ran out of the room.

Siddhant looked down at Nayantara, who was still sobbing softly in his lap. He slowly sat her up, as she had yet to eat. She wiped her tears with the back of her hand.

He took the glass of water and brought it to her lips, but Nayantara pushed his hand away. The glass fell to the ground with a loud clunk, spilling some of the water on Siddhant’s clothes.

‘What the hell!’ Siddhant stood up angrily.

‘Why did you call the physician? I had told you I was okay. Why did you have to interfere in my matter?’ Nayantara shouted.

‘Shut up,’ Siddhant roared, the scar on his face pronounced as he contorted his features in rage. ‘I’m your husband. Don’t teach me what’s right and wrong for you.’

Seeing Siddhant’s wrath, Nayantara immediately shrank in fear. In her painful state, she had completely forgotten how dominating her husband was. She knew Siddhant never hit her or something, but still, she didn’t like to face his beasty side.

‘Have you completely forgotten all your manners? One more time that tone in front of me, Nayantara, and I will take all your privileges. You will stay in the room like a trophy queen. Got it?’ he demanded in a strong voice.

Nayantara nodded her head. She felt the same fear she had felt on her first day. How could she forget that her husband was a ruthless warrior.

‘I want verbal answers,’ he roared, making Nayantara sudder.

‘Ye-s, my lord. I got it,’ she said in a quivering voice.

‘Better. Now, like a good wife, tell me how this happened?’ he asked sternly.

Nayantara lowered her eyes and fidgeted with her fingers. ‘Ahu… I was…’

Siddhant grabbed her jaw, forcing her to look at him. ‘I asked you how this happened, Nayantara,’ he said in a threatening voice.

Nayantara swallowed hard to collect her strength. His grip was firm and painful on her jaw. ‘Auh, I was in the main library. I climbed on the ladder to take the book from the upper shelf. And my leg slipped. It was an iron ladder, so its sharp edge cut my leg.’ She finished. She could say the kitchen, but the kitchen was full of eyewitnesses.

Siddhant’s jaw hardened. How could she lie straight to his face? When he was coming here, Saju met him on the way, and he told him the whole thing, including the missing envelope of Chitra and Aayushi’s investigation reports she had stolen. She really thought the man who was ruling this giant empire was that stupid. Those were his best guards. They just pretended to be stupid in front of Nayantara and followed her orders as she was the queen.

He left her jaw and took a deep breath to control his anger. Why she was interested in Chitra’s death. Once she had told him that those could be murders. Perhaps she had heard the rumors that he killed his wives. This rumor was widely spread in his enemies kingdoms. Maybe she still did not completely trust him. Maybe that was the reason she didn’t want his seed. He knew how much of an overthinker she was. He decided to stay quiet and see what she would do with the reports, letting her be satisfied with her investigation, then maybe she would leave everything.

He came out of his thoughts as Vida called him, ‘My lord, the queen’s lunch is here.’

Siddhant turned to her. ‘Make sure she finishes her food. And then give her medicine. Let me know if she shows any reluctance. And did you listen to all the instructions given by the physician?’

‘Yes, my lord.’

‘Then why is there pickle on her plate?’ he asked casually, and Vida freaked out.

‘Oh, I’m so sorry, my lord. I’m so sorry. I will remove it,’ she blabbered.

‘I don’t want any kind of carelessness, Vida. And make sure she rests.’ Siddhant’s voice was calm, but still Vida shivered in fear.

‘Siddhant, stop scaring her. I can take care of myself,’ Nayantara interjected.

‘Yeah, I can see that,’ Siddhant seethed and walked away. She didn’t care about his feelings at all. She had no idea how much he was scared. What if something happened to her? He didn’t have the strength to bear one more loss.

Nayantara stared at his back as he walked out of the room. For a moment, she felt like Siddhant knew everything.

By the time of late afternoon, Siddhant came back to his chamber to see his sassy wife. Vida was there, but she walked out as Siddhant entered.

The curtains around the bed were drawn. He parted the curtains and found her sleeping soundly. She was wrapped in a thin cloth, which ended at her knees with no ornament on her body. Her injured leg was wide open, resting on the pillow the way her wound didn’t touch anywhere, revealing her sleek thigh.

He removed his overcoat and unbuttoned the kurta before he took a book and sat beside her. She continued sleeping for another hour or so.

Siddhant was lost in the book when she cooed softly, drawing his attention towards her. He put the book aside and caressed her head. ‘Hey, princess, how are you feeling?’

Nayantara blinked a few times, her eyes still heavy with sleep. She slowly sat up and grunted in pain.

Siddhant pulled her onto his thigh and tilted her leg to see her wound. Thankfully, her bandage was dry and clean, no blood was seeping out of it. ‘Is it hurting?’

Nayantara pushed against his chest. ‘I’m not talking to you.’

‘Why?’ Siddhant said, amused by her childlike revenge.

‘And I will not let you touch me.’

Siddhant pressed his lips in a thin line to prevent his smile. ‘Oh, such a big punishment?’

‘Yes, you scolded me.’

‘Then why do you do such things that I have to scold you, huh? First you hurt yourself, and then you were shouting at me why I called the physician.’ he snapped at her softly, and kissed her pouty cheek. She was such a stubborn, spoiled princess.

‘But how could you threaten me that you would keep me locked in the room and treat me like a trophy queen,’ she said hurtfully.

Siddhant placed his hand on her bare thigh. ‘Don’t take it as an empty threat, my love. If you ever hurt yourself again, I will not hesitate to take strict action against you,’ he said in a low, but stern voice.

‘How could you punish me because I was hurt. Like I did it intentionally.’

‘Yeah, right, what was your fault? It all happened because of your adventure trip to the library, right?’ he said, and Nayantara’s heart skipped a beat. Does he know?

Nayantara lowered her gaze to avoid eye contact.

‘Do you know how much you scared me,’ he said, his rough hand running on her smooth thigh. ‘What if something happened to you, huh?’

Nayantara felt her heart racing. Her core clenched with lingering want. ‘I’m sorry,’ she heaved and tried to slip out of his lap.

But Siddhant held her firmly. ‘And why are you in this kind of clothes? Do you want me to fuck you while you are injured?’

Nayantara shook her head violently. ‘No, the lehenga kept brushing against my bandage. So I…’

Siddhant kissed her jaw, slowly devoting her skin. ‘You shouldn’t wear this. You know it makes me wild,’ he muttered against her skin. His hand was running over her inner thigh. He slowly touched her core, and Nayantara’s body jumped up in excitement.

She felt aroused, wetness leaking from her core. But she knew how rough her husband was. She didn’t want to be sore while her leg was already throbbing with pain. She pushed against his chest, breaking the beautiful moment. ‘Let me go.’

His black eyes flashed as he glared at her, his ruggedly handsome features sharpening. ‘Don’t you dare resist me. The sassiness you have shown today is not enough.’

Nayantara tensed. ‘But, my lord…’

‘I was just thinking of your pleasure. But now you have to take me inside you.’

Nayantara shook her head. ‘No, please, my lord.’

‘Open my lower.’

Nayantara felt weak in her knees. He was already a beast. She didn’t want him to fuck her when he was angry.

‘Nayantara…’ he said her name warningly.

With trembling hands, Nayantara pulled the knot of his lower. She gulped as her eyes fell on his erection.

He adjusted her on his lap with her legs around his waist, being careful that her injured leg didn’t touch anywhere. Her soft curve pressed against his hard torso as he pulled her close and shoved his rigid length into her.

‘Oww,’ Nayantara wriggled to adjust to the sudden intrusion.

His hand gripped her hip tightly as he started thrusting into her. But this time, his strokes were slow, gentle, lovable. His lips stole kisses frequently. His hand was brushing against her sensitive buds.

‘Oh Siddhant…’ Nayantara’s hands fisted on his hair as she moaned again and again, her hips buckling against his. Her eyes fluttered shut, and blood rushed to her cheeks.

His thrust began to speed up, and she felt a tight knot in her stomach. Her legs started trembling, and her insides were spasming around him.

Her body shook in pleasure, and she came apart with a loud cry.

Siddhant smirked. ‘You came so fast.’ He thrust once more and then pulled out of her.

She fell limply against the pillow, breathing heavily. She watched as Siddhant continued to stroke himself.

As he finished his orgasm, he tied his lower and sat beside her. He took the glass of water from the side table and handed it to Nayantara. She took a gulp of water and gave it back to Siddhant. He drank the rest of the water and put the glass back on the table. He again pulled her into his lap and pecked her lips.

Nayantara gave in to his warm and soothing embrace as he savored every inch of her mouth.

Satisfied with her submission, Siddhant lifted her into his arms and carried her to the balcony. Nayantara didn’t protest, as she was still numb from a sugary orgasm. He sat on the chair with Nayantara on his lap.

Nayantara gave him a soft kiss on his neck. ‘It was amazing. It made me forget my pain.’

‘Oh, yeah,’ Siddhant said teasingly. ‘Then why did you resist it in the first place?’

‘I thought you would be rough.’

He pushed back a strand of her hair as he kissed her bare shoulder. ‘How could I be rough with my princess when she is already hurt. But you don’t have an ounce of trust in your husband, do you?’

She buried her face in the crook of his neck to avoid his stern gaze. They sat like that without saying anything, until Vida interrupted them.

She stood at some distance. ‘Sorry to disturb you, my lord. But the queen needs to eat something,’ she said, as it was the king’s order to take care of her health.

‘Yeah, bring it here,’ Siddhant said, and Nayantara wriggled in his arms, trying to get out of his lap. But Siddhant held her firmly, unaffected by her struggle.

Vida slowly walked to the balcony. She kept her eyes low, as the queen was in such a compromising position. She had a shy smile on her lips. The lord was so big that the queen looked like a baby in his arms. She quickly put the fruit dish on the small table in front of them and ran away.

Nayantara rolled her eyes. She knew Vida would tease her when they were alone.

Siddhant picked up a mango slice and brought it to her lips. She started taking bites one after another. Her eyes were lost in staring at Siddhant’s scar, her fingers playing with his chest hair.

She suddenly flinched when Siddhant put a naseberry in her mouth. ‘Auh, only mango,’ she said grumpily.

Siddhant chuckled. Putting her half eaten naseberry into his mouth, he picked up another mango slice for her.

She was still looking at his scar. Siddhant wondered why she was so fond of his scars.

‘My lord,’ she mumbled.

Siddhant hummed in response.

‘You cried while they were sewing it,’ Nayantara said as she traced the scar on his face so gently like it would still hurt him.

Siddhant thinned his brows at her strange question, but then he suddenly realized, and a knowing smile spread across his lips. ‘Hey, are you embarrassed that you were crying while getting stitches?’

‘Just answer me, Siddhant,’ she said irritably, like he hit her nerve.

A deep laugh rumbled from his chest. ‘It would make you feel better if I said yes.’

‘I want an honest answer,’ she said in a small voice.

Siddhant’s voice turned serious as he said, ‘I would like to cry, but at that time I was on the battlefield. We were losing the war. I had to go back to the battlefield. So the healer sewed it as fast as possible, without giving me any pain relief as it could numb me on the battlefield.’

Nayantara gasped, and Siddhant chuckled at her expression.

‘You cannot cry when you have responsibilities on your shoulders. You cannot cry when there is no one to hold you or pamper you,’ Siddhant said sadly as the images of his rough past flashed in his head.

Nayantara rested her head on his shoulder. She knew this feeling when you had no option but to be strong. ‘But I don’t like to be strong, my lord. I hate being strong.’

Siddhant kissed her head with clear adoration. ‘Then don’t be. I will always hold you.’

Nayantara closed her eyes in contentment. She felt loved, protected. ‘I love you, my lord,’ she whispered, and Siddhant secured her in his embrace. Sometimes he felt like she was holding so much inside her, like she wanted to say something but she couldn’t. Was it her parents’ loss or her forced marriage that made her like this, or was there something else in her past he didn’t know yet?

18 Fruit of her selfless act

Next morning, when Siddhant came out of the dressing room, he found Nayantara still nestled in deep slumber. Her medication was making her sleepy. Mesmerized by her peaceful beauty, Siddhant lingered a moment, his gaze tracing her delicate features. Her long, dark eyelashes. Her small nose. Her lush lips. He leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on her cheek. Then, with a last reluctant glance, he turned and walked away.

Everyone stood up as Siddhant stepped into the throne hall and made his way to the throne. Reaching the dais, he ascended the steps and sat on the throne.

The first matter was Jakat. Aditya had just returned from Jakat border.

Siddhant looked at Aditya, who was sitting right to the throne, a few steps below. ‘So what is the situation there?’

‘Right now, everything is under control. They have army men, but they don’t have as advanced weapons as us. So even if they attack, we don’t need more manpower there. But right now, they are not planning any attacks. Just some infiltration here and there, which our army will easily foil,’ Aditya said.

‘Keep an eye on them,’ Siddhant said.

‘I will, my lord.’

Siddhant turned to other courtiers. ‘And what is the news of Ghan?’

‘Their men tried to enter our border. We killed all of them with the loss of our one soldier.’

Siddhant shook his head. ‘This hurt me. We have such a good relationship with Sultan Sulayman.’

‘We have, my lord. But his son is a mad bull. He has snatched the throne from his father,’ one of the courtiers said.

‘They won’t stop their aggression. We have to take strict action against Ghan. Let me go with the army, my lord,’ Aditya said.

Siddhant shook his head. ‘No, Aditya. I don’t want more wars. Our people are suffering from this. We have good business relations with Ghan. If we fight the war, the business chain will break, and our and their people will suffer.’

‘Then what will we do? They are trying to despoil Panamek. The people there are living in fear. They will not stop their activities just like that,’ another courtier said.

Siddhant let out a heavy breath. ‘What does Sultan Sulayman want?’

‘We have confirmed news, my lord, he doesn’t want to give the throne to Aadam. Even Ghan people are not happy with Aadam,’ the minister said.

Siddhant ran a hand over his beard before he said, ‘Then it is decided. We will help him with a coup. We will set his younger brother, Aaftab, on the throne. This way, we could avoid conflict with Ghan.’

‘But what is the guarantee that Aaftab will stay under control after he gets the throne?’ one of the courtiers asked.

Siddhant smirked. ‘Don’t worry about him. I have his weakness. He will not go against me. All the planning about the coup will be discussed with selected army officers. What is the next matter?’

Before they could move on to the next matter, a constable walked in and bowed his head. ‘I apologize for disturbing the royal court, but my lord, there is a group of people standing outside the palace gate. They want to meet you. We told them that you cannot meet them right now, but they don’t want to go. Should we drive them out?’

Siddhant thinned his brows. Would everything be fine in the kingdom? Why did his people have to take the trouble to come here? ‘No, they are my people. Let them in,’ Siddhant stated.

‘As you say, my lord.’ The constable bowed and walked out.

He went to the gate and conducted a security check of everyone to make sure no one was carrying weapons or other dangerous things. When the guards found them harmless, they let them in. Two other constables guided them to the throne hall.

After a few moments, they were standing in front of King SiddhantVeer Agnivanshi.

There were two groups of people with some women and children. They sat on their knees and touched the floor in the king’s respect.

Siddhant nodded, accepting their greetings.

‘What can I do for my people?’ Siddhant asked softly as they all stood up.

‘My lord, we have come to thank you,’ one of them said.

Siddhant smiled. ‘Thanks me for what?’ After a long time, he had met his people, and it felt really nice. When he was the prince, he often met his people, listened to their needs and problems, and tried to solve them. But after becoming the king, his desire to expand his empire distanced him from his people.

‘You finally listened to our problem. You solved our water problem. You made well in our village.’

Siddhant thinned his brows and looked at the minister and other officials. Maybe one of them did this noble work. But they all looked as confused as Siddhant.

‘And you renovated the school in our city,’ another man spoke.

Siddhant couldn’t believe his ears as his people continued to praise him. But he knew who could do this. His queen. Nayantara.

‘You are praising the wrong person,’ finally, Siddhant said. ‘It was not me. It was your Queen.’

‘Our new queen did all this for us?’ one of the women asked. They all looked surprised.

‘Yes, Queen Nayantara did everything,’ Siddhant said with a smile.

‘My lord, can we meet the queen for once? We want to thank her,’ another woman said.

Siddhant’s chest swelled with pride. He always knew Nayantara was talented. But he didn’t know she had such an altruistic nature. She didn’t just figure out the ground level problem but also worked on it.

‘Sure,’ Siddhant said, and he sent the guard to Nayantara. He knew Nayantara was injured and her stitches hurt when she walked, but he didn’t want her to miss the sweet fruit of her hard work.

Nayantara was sitting on the couch, writing and signing some papers, when she heard a clamor.

‘You cannot meet the queen. She is resting,’ Vida said domineeringly.

‘Have you lost your head? The king has sent me. I have brought a message from the throne hall.’ A manly voice came.

‘What is it, Vida? Let him come,’ Nayantara said, and the guard walked in and bowed his head.

‘My lady, the king has asked for your presence in the throne hall.’

Nayantara thinned her brows, wondering what could have been the issue. ‘You go, and tell the king I will be there in a few moments.’

As the guard walked away, Vida cried out, ‘Oh, no, why does the king want you there? Maybe he found out about the evidence room. He wants to punish us in front of everyone.’

‘Stop your drama, Vida. And get me dressed,’ Nayantara said. She was in plain cotton attire, as she didn’t have to meet anyone today.

‘Yeah, yeah, my lady.’ Vida ran to the dressing room, followed by Nayantara.

Vida dashed to the cupboard, and Nayantara sat on the chair. Vida quickly took out a red silk lehenga with heavy embroidery.

‘Vida, this is not my wedding night. Pick something sober.’

‘Dark color suits you, my lady.’

‘Yeah, but I’m going to the throne hall. I want to look sober rather than glamorous.’

‘Then you say what you would like to wear?’

Nayantara glanced at all the clothes. ‘That light pink would be fine.’

Vida quickly took it out and dressed Nayantara as fast as possible. It was a simple pink lehenga with a thick golden border. Without wasting time, Nayantara stood up and made her way to the throne hall.

A hush fell over the throne hall as Nayantara entered. Every head turned, every eye fell upon her as they stood up in her respect. Nayantara’s eyes lifted at Siddhant and a shiver ran down her spine as she found his intense, proprietary gaze fixed on her. He looked magnificent on his throne. His face was emotionless, which made him look even more ferocious. She swallowed hard to collect her strength. C’mon, Nayantara, be a queen. She held her head high and moved with a measured, graceful pace. She noticed a group of people standing in the corner.

She glanced at her right, where Aditya was sitting. She gave him a small nervous smile, and Aditya gave her a reassuring nod as if everything was okay. She walked up the steps, and as she reached the last step, Siddhant stood up and held out his hand. Nayantara placed her tiny hand in his big palm, and he led her to the throne. He made her sit and then took his place beside her.

The courtiers sat after them.

Nayantara held her breath as Siddhant started.

‘Sorry to trouble you, my queen, but this is something very important. These people come here to meet you,’ Siddhant said, and they all came forward.

Nayantara looked at the group of people. ‘Yes, what can I do for you?’ she asked in a calm, collected voice, the weight of expectations settling on her shoulders.

‘You already did a lot for us, my lady,’ one of the women said. And then one after another, people started praising her, showering her with their love.

‘We were longing for water. But no official listened to us,’ they said, and Siddhant glared at his officials, who hung their heads.

‘No one ever thought about our problems. But you did, my lady. You are our goddess. Your feet are the good fortune of Maharav.’ They kept praising her. They sat on their knees and touched their heads to the floor.

Seeing the people’s love, Nayantara’s eyes filled with tears. She joined her hands. ‘I just did my duty. And please rise. You all are my family. You don’t have to bend in front of me.’

Then, one by one, they gave the king and queen some gifts. Men gifted some fruits and grain. A woman gave them a handmade embroidery lehenga and overcoat for the king. A little girl gave Nayantara a handmade bracelet.

Nayantara smiled. She stood up and walked down the steps. She extended her hand towards the girl and asked her to help her wear the bracelet.

The girl became happy, and she tied the bracelet to Nayantara’s wrist.

Everyone looked at the queen in wonder. Generally, the royal people accepted the gifts out of courtesy but never used them. The queen had the most exquisite jewelry with the rarest gemstones. But here she was, wearing a cheap bracelet made up of stones and shells.

Nayantara leaned forward and kissed her cheek. ‘Thank you so much, sweety, for this pretty bracelet. I love this,’ she said, and the girl’s face broke into a big smile. She clapped twice, and Vida walked in. ‘Vida, bring something for my new friend.’

Vida nodded. She walked out and came back with a big tray of sweets and dry fruits.

All the children there got excited, but too hesitated to ask for it.

Nayantara saw their hesitation. ‘It is for everyone,’ she said with a smile, and a few maids entered with more sweets and dry fruits.

The kids started jumping, and their mothers tried to control them that they should behave in front of the king and queen.

Siddhant just sat there, staring at his wife as she mingled with the kids. He had a proud smile on his face. She deserved the throne more than him.

The kids ate some sweets and took the rest to their homes. Nayantara went back to the throne. People greeted the king and queen one last time before they walked out of the hall.

Siddhant cleared his throat, catching everyone’s attention. ‘The queen has done a marvelous job for Maharav and its people. Today, I would like to appreciate her effort and hard work with a little gift. Actually, it is not a gift. It is her right. I would like to give the queen all the rights I have. From now on, she doesn’t need my permission for anything. She has free rights to Maharav’s treasure and army. She has the right to every secret information of the kingdom.’

Nayantara blinked at him in awe. She couldn’t believe her ears. He gifted her the power.

He looked at Nayantara as he said further, ‘She could go to the prohibited places without my permission.’

That’s it. Nayantara lowered her gaze. He knows.

Everyone cheered for the king’s decision. Some were jealous. But most of them were happy.

‘You will receive the official letter as soon as it is ready. Now you go. You need rest,’ Siddhant said, so now he could take the class of his officials, who failed to serve the people.

Nayantara slowly nodded. The courtiers stood again as she walked out.

Siddhant’s eyes roamed over his officials like a predator. They had ruined his image among people. He knew it was his fault as well. He was so detached from his people that he did not even realize their problems. ‘How do you guys explain this blunder?’ Siddhant asked in a slow, thunderous voice, making everyone shiver in fear. Aditya also hung his head. His brother was busy in the war, so it was his responsibility to look after the people. He had also fought some wars, but not as much as his brother.

The officials tried to give explanations and excuses, but Siddhant was not going to buy it. He dismissed all their excuses and asked them to present their work report within a week.

After finishing with the officials, Siddhant went to the meeting room as he had to discuss Ghan matter.

That day at lunch, Aditya kept praising Nayantara. He told everything to dadi ma. Dadi ma was happy that her grandson had such a clever, big hearted wife. But Padmini was not pleased as usual. She said it was not Nayantara’s job to look after the kingdom, and Siddhant shouldn’t give her endless powers. But Nayantara ignored her as usual.

After lunch, Nayantara returned to her chamber. Siddhant, who typically retreated to his work after their meals, surprised her by following along. As he entered the room, he swept Nayantara off her feet in a strong embrace and spun her around in a joyous whirl.

Nayantara’s laughter filled the air, her hands instinctively finding his shoulders for balance. He was so strong. He always held her like she weighed nothing.

‘I’m so proud of you, my love.’ He pecked her lush petals. She parted her lips at the sudden heat that ignited between them. He sucked her lips slowly but passionately. Her eyes forced close, and her fingers slid into his hair as she moaned in his mouth. He broke the kiss and looked into her beautiful brown orbs. ‘I love you, Nayantara. You are such an angel.’

Nayantara’s breath hitched, her heart fluttering in her chest. This was a confession she’d longed to hear.

Siddhant put her back on the ground. He himself was surprised by his sudden declaration. He hadn’t thought he’d ever utter those words again after Chitra. Nayantara had expressed her love many times. He still remembered the first time she said it in front of everyone in the dining hall. Her each expression was a silent ache in his heart for his inability to return it. But today, something about her selfless act had cracked open a dam within him, releasing a torrent of unspoken affection.

Nayantara buried her face in his chest. ‘I love you too, my lord.’

Siddhant slowly caressed her back before he pushed her back to look into her eyes. ‘That’s why you asked for more money?’

Nayantara nodded. ‘I want it to make an infirmary.’

‘You used all your queen’s funds in public interest?’

She nodded again.

‘Nayantara, that queen’s funds were for your personal use. And some charity work. If you needed money for public welfare, you could have asked me. I would have given you from the royal treasury. As much as you want.’

‘No, you are already giving me a lot of money. I don’t need that much for myself. Already, your mother has given me racks and racks of clothes and jewelry.’

‘Every king and queen has everything, but they never give anything from their portion. You are such a selfless girl, Nayantara. I don’t have an ounce of regret that I snatched such a precious gym from Anhilwara.’

Nayantara playfully slapped his chest as she said, ‘You’re over praising me.’

‘My queen is worth praising in every way.’

‘I still don’t believe you gifted me power.’

‘I didn’t gift you. You earned it, my love. You deserve it.’

Nayantara smiled and held his arm. ‘Come, I show you a drawing of the infirmary.’

Siddhant shook his head. ‘Not now. I’m leaving for Panamek. I will be back in a few days.’ He had to stay near Ghan to ensure that nothing went wrong while his men executed the plan. So he would stay in the nearest castle from Ghan border.

Nayantara tensed. ‘Is everything okay between Ghan and us?’

Siddhant smiled. She was so smart. Just a small hint, and she understood everything. She never had to explain any political thing. ‘Yeah, everything is okay. I’m planning a coup.’

‘That is dangerous,’ she said in a serious tone.

‘Less dangerous than a direct war.’

Nayantara nodded in agreement. ‘Good luck,’ she said with a faint smile. She didn’t like this news, but suddenly something clicked in her head, and her eyes lit up with excitement. That means…

‘Yeah, that means you will be a freebird for some days with powers to do anything,’ Siddhant said as if reading her mind. ‘You are happy that I’m leaving, right?’ He narrowed his eyes on her, seeing a newly formed excitement on her face.

Nayantara shook her head as she put on an innocent face. She buried her face into his chest to hide her mischievous grin. ‘I will miss you.’

Siddhant wrapped his arms around her small frame, squeezing her affectionately. ‘Take care of the kingdom and family.’

Nayantara nodded against his chest. ‘I will.’

‘And don’t fight with maa.’

‘Did I ever fight with her after that day?’ she said in a small, hurtful voice.

Siddhant kissed the top of her head. ‘I know she is wrong. But she is elder, Nayantara.’

‘I understand, my lord,’ she muttered.

‘If you want anything, Aditya is here.’

‘Okay.’

‘And don’t put yourself in any trouble. Your wound is fresh. Take care of yourself until the stitches are removed. Eat properly and take medicines on time.’

Nayantara pulled back with a smile. ‘Yes, my lord, yes. How many more instructions will you give me?’

‘You won’t understand how scared I’m to leave you alone. I don’t know who will handle my little troublemaker in my absence.’

Nayantara punched his shoulder. ‘I’m not that bad.’

Siddhant placed his on the small of her back, pulling her close, her delicate curves collided against his hard torso. ‘Now give me a proper goodbye kiss.’

Nayantara rose on her toes to meet his lips. Siddhant placed his massive hand on her bottom, slightly pushing her up, helping her to reach his lips. The moment her soft lips claimed his, he sighed in bliss. He was going to miss her.

19 A brute of a man

Damn it! Nayantara thumped her hands against the table. Five days had passed since Siddhant’s departure. She had seen Chitra’s investigation reports a hundred times. There was everything. The physician’s statement and health report before and after her death. Servants’ statements. Head-cook’s statement. Royal family’s statements. But there was nothing suspicious. All the statements pointed to the fact that her death was natural. She had caught some disease. She had a stomach ache and a mild but constant fever, and that caused her early labor. And Aayushi got her mother’s infection. She had the same symptoms. As simple as that. But Nayantara’s suspicious brain was not ready to believe it.

She leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. She felt stressed. She had taken so many things in her hand and was now unable to handle them. On one side, she had development projects. Ganesh had not yet come back with any information. If she couldn’t do anything in Anhilwara matter, then Siddhant would never let her do something like this in the future. Or worse, before she could do anything, her uncle executed his plan, and Siddhant would never trust her again.

Her work stress was not the only reason for her sore mood. She was missing Siddhant. His absence was now killing her. She had thought she would like her freedom. Her days passed somehow, but her nights were restless. She used to live alone. She didn’t know when she became so needy. She was missing his spicy, comforting scent. The warmth of his body. His strong, protective arms around her. His hungry gaze when he checked out her body. And the burn of his fat cock inside her tender tissues.

She cried in frustration. Loving him made her so vulnerable.

Aditya even arranged a joust to lift her mood, and she enjoyed the brutal game a lot. But everything was just a temporary destruction of her constant longing for her husband. She hated such tender feelings. Her sharp, overthinking brain couldn’t find it healthy.

Thankfully, her wound was almost healed, but the physician said her stitches would remain for two more days.

‘My lady?’ Suddenly, a manly voice pulled her back to reality.

‘What?’ Nayantara said irritably as she quickly collected all the papers and put them back into the envelope.

‘Sorry to disturb you, my lady, but Ganesh is here,’ Aazad informed.

Nayantara straightened her back. ‘Finally, send him in.’

Ganesh walked in, and Aazad closed the door behind him.

He bowed his head before he stood straight in front of the queen.

‘So what is it?’ Nayantara’s heart was lurching to hear the information.

‘They have a large quantity of opium. And they are giving it to the Maharav army. They are doing this slowly and patiently. They also have some dancers and mistresses. They are only targeting desirous army men. Even the army head there doesn’t even have a clue about this yet. Everything is looking perfect from outside,’ Ganesh said.

‘I see.’ A wicked smile spread across Nayantara’s lips. ‘Good job, Ganesh. You can go now. And keep an eye on them. Abhay will give you your payment.’

‘Okay, my lady.’ Ganesh bowed his head and walked away. He knocked on the door, and Aazad opened it.

‘Aazad,’ Nayantara called him, and he walked in.

‘Yes, my lady.’

‘Tell the head commander that I want to meet him.’

‘Okay, my lady,’ Aazad said and left the room.

Nayantara leaned back in her chair. It was clear that they wanted to weaken Maharav’s army. But Nayantara didn’t think they were planning to attack Maharav. Maharav was not easy to win, even if they succeeded in unguarding one of its borders. That means they wanted to enter the drug trade in Maharav through that path. Good business idea, uncle, but it is not going to be fulfilled.

Siddhant entered the chamber, and his eyes immediately searched for Nayantara. But she was nowhere to be seen. Here, he was craving her and she was enjoying her freedom. He traveled day and night just to reach her faster. His convoy was still behind. He decided to take a bath first and then find his wife. He grabbed the apple from the fruit basket and took a big bite of it before he walked into the bathroom.

On the other side, Nayantara was sitting with Aditya, playing chess.

‘Checkmate, bhabhi shri,’ Aditya said.

Nayantara sank back into the chair. Since Siddhant left, she’s been losing every day.

‘Seems like your luck is not with you. But don’t worry, bhabhi shri. I have conformed news that bhai shri will be here by tomorrow morning. Even before you wake up. Then you can again focus on the game.’

Nayantara gave a wistful smile. It had been more than fifteen days since Siddhant left. ‘Did everything go according to plan?’ she asked.

‘Of course it had to be. Bhai shri has never faced defeat,’ Aditya said proudly.

Nayantara chuckled. She loved their brother bond.

‘Aadam is dead. And Aftab is now the new Sultan,’ he said.

‘I’m glad this time he didn’t choose war. The war has countless side effects.’

‘I’m also surprised by his move. He has changed a lot after marrying you.’

Nayantara thinned her brows. ‘What do you mean?’

‘His anger has somehow subsided now. When our father died, he was burning in rage. He wanted nothing but to ruin Anhilwara. But at that time, he was young and had no experience with war. Anhilwara was a big target for him, as it was strong and powerful. So he raised our army. He started winning nearby states to make Maharav big and powerful. And that day, when he left for Anhilwara, he was so enraged like he would burn Anhilwara to ashes. But seems like the princess of Anhilwara knows some kind of magic. The moment my brutal brother entered Anhilwara border, some divine power tamed him.’

Nayantara gave a bitter laugh. ‘Princess of Anhilwara didn’t do anything. It was my uncle who cajoled him and gave me as a winning prize. And why wouldn’t your brother accept this prize! He proved in front of all the kingdoms that he is the most powerful emperor, and Anhilwara is not even capable of protecting its princess. He left the Anhilwara in disgrace. He got his revenge.’

‘I’m sorry, bhabhi shri. I didn’t mean to hurt you. But trust me, bhai shri respects you a lot. He doesn’t see you as a winning prize or something,’ Aditya said in a small voice.

Nayantara waved her hand reassuringly. ‘I know, Aditya. I hated him in the beginning. But we are okay now,’ she said timidly.

‘Just okay, bhabhi shri? Look at yourself, you are craving bhai shri,’ Aditya teased, making Nayantara’s cheeks flush with warmth.

‘Shut up, Aditya. It is just a work burden I’m desperate to get rid of. Why should I look after his responsibilities? I want some time for myself.’

‘Oh, I see,’ Aditya mocked.

Nayantara rolled her eyes and stood up. ‘I should go now.’

‘Okay, okay, I will not tease you.’ Aditya raised his hands in surrender.

‘No, it is not that. I have a meeting tomorrow,’ Nayantara said, and she wished him good night before she left. She came to her chamber with a heavy heart. One more night without him.

She went into the dressing room and removed her earrings, followed by her necklace and bangles, when she heard the sound of water. Throwing the bangles on the dressing tables, she ran into the bathroom. Siddhant was standing there with a towel around his waist. The water droplets were dripping from his hair locks and rolling down to his fine abs.

Siddhant’s heart skipped a beat as he saw her in dark violet attire. She looked hot, desirable, tempting.

Nayantara looked at him for a moment and then ran into his arms.

Siddhant laughed, lifting her into a hug. ‘Oh, so desperate to meet the husband? I thought you were enjoying your freedom,’ he teased her.

She clung to him like a baby, and Siddhant placed his hand on her bottom to support her weight. His soothing, masculine scent enfolded her, and she almost moaned at the relief of his hands on her.

‘I miss you,’ she panted, her voice wet with emotions.

Siddhant rubbed her back lovingly. ‘I miss you too, my love.’ His voice was thick with desire. ‘How is your leg?’

Nayantara pulled back with a smile. ‘All you care about is my leg? It is fine. The physician removed the stitches yesterday.’

When Siddhant got the answer he wanted, he didn’t waste any time capturing her mouth in a fierce kiss.

She sucked in a gasp, and Siddhant plundered her mouth, enjoying her sweet taste.

The burning need to be inside her ignited in his body. He put her down and stripped her in a moment before pushing her against the pillar. His teeth locked on her neck, and his strong arm hooked around her waist, pinning her in place. His other hand grabbed her ass, squeezed them. A smile came to his lips. It felt bigger and plumper in his palm. She was gaining weight.

Nayantara could feel his cock pulse against her. ‘Siddhant…’ She quivered in his hold, and he released her from his punishing bite, dropping a tender kiss on the sore spot.

His massive hand patted her bottom, enjoying the smoothness of her skin against his rough palm, before he lifted her up effortlessly. Her legs automatically wrapped around his waist, and she pecked his lips. Her breast teased over his hard chest as she wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him in a frenzy.

Siddhant let his towel fall and shoved his rigid length into her tight hole.

‘Ahhh…’ Nayantara cried in pain and broke the kiss. ‘I’m dry, my lord.’

A low growl rumbled from his chest. ‘You will kill me, Nayantara. I can’t wait,’ he grunted as his thick fingers dipped between her legs. He pressed down hard on her aching bud, and stars burst behind her eyes. Warmth bloomed between her legs, and her walls clenched around his hard cock, milking it with her juices.

He pulled back and shoved into her again, this time hitting her pleasure spot. A blissful shudder rolled through her body, and more wetness leaked from her core.

He gripped her hips firmly. His massive hand could easily cup her small bottom. He thrusted into her fast and hard, hitting her pleasure spot over and over again.

Her back was hitting against the pillar, and she clenched on his shoulder to support her body from his relentless thrusting.

‘Ahhh… Sidhannnt… slowerrr…’ she whimpered, but Siddhant didn’t stop until he wrung out an intense orgasm from her body. He was savage when he was high on lust.

Her body went limp, and she dropped her head on his shoulder. ‘On the bed, please,’ she said breathlessly. He was still hard inside her. He was not going to stop anytime soon. He was carrying her entire weight, but still, she wanted something soft and comfortable beneath her back to handle his hard thrusting.

Siddhant chuckled. ‘Oh, my princess likes the traditional way.’

He pulled out of her and threw her over his shoulder, carrying her to the bedroom like his prize of war. He tossed her onto the bed. Nayantara gulped in fear. He was so horny. Spreading her legs wide, he settled between them. Her sex was red from her orgasm and covered with her juices. He leaned forward and kissed her inner thigh, biting and nibbling on her soft skin.

She moaned as his thumb rubbed her clit. She was swollen and achy between her legs. Her body was craving more orgasm, but this time without pain. She liked it this way. His fingers and tongue.

She let out a breathy whimper as his tongue slid into her folds and licked her tender tissues. ‘Ohh… Siddhant… You are so amazing,’ she sighed in bliss. His tongue was a soothing balm on her sore, sensitive skin.

He released a low hum of masculine satisfaction. He sucked her intimately, and her nerves sparkled with anticipation. He slightly bit on the edge of her fold, and stars burst behind her eyes.

She writhed in pleasure. ‘Ohhh, this feels so good. Your tongue is better than your monstrous shaft,’ she whined in bliss.

Siddhant smirked. ‘Oh yeah, all you care about is your pleasure. What about mine, huh?’

He came up, leaving her on edge.

She whimpered at the loss. ‘Please, Siddhant, make me finish.’

‘I will, my love,’ he said as he crashed down his lips on hers, hungry and possessive. His big, massive hands massaged her breasts, and his callous fingers pinched and teased her sensitive nipples.

‘Now keep lying like a good wife, and I will make you cum,’ he said as he widened her stance and entered into her again.

She gasped at the huge intrusion into her already sore vagina. Her hands flung to his chest, pushing him away. ‘No… with your tongue,’ she cried like a stubborn child.

‘Calm down, Nayantara. I will be gentle,’ he said in a slightly scolding tone.

She wriggled in discomfort as her tight walls stretched. ‘No, no, with your tongue.’ She kept hitting at his hard chest, but he didn’t budge an inch.

Siddhant’s jaw hardened. He grabbed her thin wrists in his one hand and pinned them above her head.

‘No… Sidha… Aahhh…’ Her words turned into a cry as Siddhant bit hard below her jawline, a primal warning that he would be more harsh if she didn’t behave.

A soft sob of surrender escaped her lips, and she went still beneath him. Her husband was a brute of a man.

He licked her sore spot in reward, humming his satisfaction. He released her wrist, letting her touch him when he would pound into her.

He began to move within her, slowly at first, stimulating all her pleasure points, and then slightly faster, but not too deep or rough. Nayantara relaxed, enjoying every inch of his length. ‘Ohhh… yess… don’t stop…’ she started chanting. Her hand fisted on his hair as she pulled him closer and pressed her lips on his, showing him how much she was enjoying his intimate invasion. But this soothing pleasure didn’t last long, as he hooked her thighs around his hips and shoved his rigid length deep inside her.

‘Ahhh… I can’t take this much…’ Nayantara let out a cry of protest. He had promised he would be gentle.

‘This is for not trusting your husband, even when he said he would be gentle.’ His voice was laced with dominance as he thrust into her in a punishing way, filling her with intense pain and pleasure.

The room filled with Nayantara’s quivering moans as he unleashed his full savagery upon her, pushing her towards her climax.

Her toes curled and her fingers scratched his back as her body shook in immense pleasure. Her guttural moans turned into a wail as her walls pulsed and gripped his cock tightly.

He growled in pleasure. The sensation of her throbbing walls was too much, and he buried his cock deep inside her, feeling her with his warm seed.

His weight dropped heavily on her, pressing her shaking body deeper into the mattress. His forehead rested on her as they both slowly came down from their highs.

He carefully pulled out of her sore vagina and rolled to his side. Pulling her into his arms, he rubbed her back as she was still struggling for her breath. ‘Are you all right?’ he asked, his tone warm and tender.

‘Don’t show me your fake concern after tearing me apart.’ Her words slurred with fatigue. She wanted to push him away, but her limbs were too heavy to move.

His thick fingers trailed through her hair. ‘I’m sorry, my love. But you know how much I want you. How could I resist my beautiful wife when I got her after so many days.’

Nayantara blushed, but then again put up a scowl face. ‘So what? I’m the Queen, and only my pleasure matters.’

Siddhant’s chest vibrated with an amused laugh. ‘Yes, my queen, yes. Next time, I will act like your slave and please you in every way,’ he said, kissing her bare shoulder.

Satisfied with his answer, Nayantara slowly melted into his arms. She buried her face in his chest and nestled in peaceful slumber.

Siddhant pulled up the comforter with his leg and covered themselves. He kissed her hair, inhaling her delicate floral scent as he closed his eyes in contentment. He had travel fatigue and fell asleep immediately.

Nayantara woke up at her usual time. During the bath, the maids kept giggling, laughing, gossiping, and teasing her seeing her bruised body. Nayantara ignored them. She was now used to it. The maids got her dressed in yellow attire, and she came out of the dressing room. Siddhant was still fast asleep. She could understand his last week was stressful and sleepless. She didn’t know whether he ate anything last night or not. What an irresponsible wife she was — she didn’t even ask him. She sat on the edge of the bed and tapped on his shoulder. She didn’t want to disturb his sleep, but she wanted to ask him something important.

‘My lord!’ she called him softly.

Siddhant grunted and turned towards her. He held her hand and kissed her fingers. ‘Come to the bed,’ he muttered.

Nayantara chuckled. ‘It’s morning, my lord. Wake up. I want to ask you something.’

He creaked open his eyes. ‘What do you want to ask when I have given you all the powers?’ His voice was heavy with sleep.

‘Auh, my lord, last night you… you… ended up inside me. So can I…’ She left the sentence unfinished. She knew he was touchy about this.

Siddhant’s heart sank, and hurt emerged in his eyes. He didn’t know what was wrong with her. Her demand was highly inappropriate. It was just unacceptable for him. He wanted to take control of this. He wanted to snap at her that he was the husband and he would decide on these things. If he wanted a child, she had to carry it.

His powerful muscles stiffened, and his grip on her hand tightened as he struggled to calm his anger.

Nayantara sensed his rising temper and pulled her hand back from his grip.

Siddhant hated to see fear in her eyes for him. But which wife would express such a wish to her husband?

‘My lord, please say something.’ Her voice quivered. Her eyes were looking at him with hope mingled with fear.

Siddhant let out a heavy sigh. ‘You can take it.’

Nayantara lowered her eyes to avoid his intense gaze. ‘I know, my lord, you want…’

‘My lady,’ Suddenly Vida called her, and Nayantara stood up from the bed and looked at her.

‘Yes, Vida?’

‘The head commander is waiting for you in the meeting hall,’ she said.

‘Yeah, I’m coming,’ Nayantara said, and Vida walked away.

She turned to Siddhant. ‘You get ready and have breakfast. Then we will talk. I want to hear about your adventurous mission,’ she said with a soft smile and went away.

Siddhant just stared at her back as she walked away from him. Something burned in his chest. He was so desperate for the child, and she was not ready to give him anytime soon.

20 Baby shower

Nayantara parted the silken curtains of the carriage and opened the window. Her heart skipped a beat as she found the magnificent view of Anhilwara’s palace. The tips of the towers were catching the sun, igniting them with a fiery glow. Gardens, sprawling and meticulously maintained, stretched out in a tapestry of vibrant colors. Lush green lawns were dotted with vibrant blooms — roses in every shade imaginable, lilies reaching for the sky, and the exotic fragrance of jasmine filling the air. Fountain water shimmering like liquid diamonds.

My palace! My Anhilwara!

‘Your palace is so beautiful, my lady. I’m so excited to see it,’ Vida chirped, drawing Nayantara’s attention to her.

‘Yeah, but first you fix my clothes and hair,’ Nayantara said as she was just woken up. Her chariot had all the luxurious comforts. So her six-day journey was quite smooth.

It was Vishakha’s baby shower, and of course, Siddhant and Nayantara had to attend it. She came back to her kingdom after more than seven months. Earlier this function was to be held in Patyal, as this ceremony was mostly performed by in-laws. But Patyal was facing a water crisis and was not able to handle so many guests. So Rajendra arranged it in Anilwara’s palace.

This invitation was a good opportunity for Nayantara to fulfill her purpose.

Finally, the chariot stopped at the grand entrance of the palace. Siddhant was already there. He would like to travel on horse, under the open sky. So he reached early. The chariot was for his delicate queen, as she couldn’t handle the sun and dust. Of course, he had no idea that his wife was used to living without comforts.

Rajendra and Veena were also there. They welcomed Siddhant, and now three of them were waiting for Nayantara.

Siddhant walked forward and opened the door of the chariot, offering his hand to his wife. Nayantara gladly took it and stepped down from the chariot.

As her step fell on Anhilwara’s land, all her painful memories rushed into her. Her father’s murder. Her mother’s grief. How her uncle reduced her to being a maid. How her auntie and Vishakha enjoyed her condition.

She looked around at their big convoy. Whenever Siddhant traveled to another kingdom, he always went with his entire convoy. His healer. His chef. And other servants and guards. It was protocol. And Nayantara was relieved by this. She couldn’t trust her uncle. He had already killed her father.

She looked on and found Rajendra and Veena. She took a sharp breath to face her family.

Everyone froze as their eyes fell on Nayantara. She was splendidly dressed in a gold metallic lehenga with heavy embroidery, creating a shimmering effect. She had gained some weight, and her modest curves were now quite prominent.

Nayantara adjoined her hands to greet them but avoided touching their feet. Siddhant noticed this, he even glared at her. But Nayantara ignored his silent warning and stepped in. She suddenly stopped and turned back to her aunt. ‘I hope my room is ready.’

Veena could read a silent warning in Nayantara’s eyes. She wanted her room back. Venna forced a smile on her face as she said, ‘Yes, of course, everything is done your way.’

‘You come with me, my lord,’ Rajendra said. ‘Nayantara is very choosy. If something doesn’t go according to her wishes, she will get it changed. So you better rest in the guest room till then.’

Siddhant nodded with a smile and walked away with Rajendra.

Nayantara turned to Veena. ‘I want my room,’ she stated, loud and clear.

‘Vishakha is there,’ Veena said.

‘Then send her somewhere else,’ Nayantara said dryly.

‘But you know Vishakha likes it. I can give you any other room you want.’

‘I want my room. Or get ready for the consequences,’ Nayantara said in a cold, threatening voice.

Veena clenched her fists. This marriage gave her immense power. They got her married with bad intentions. They thought that barbarian king would make her suffer, but now it seems she had a good influence on her husband. ‘Wait in the guest room. I will call you when your room is ready,’ Veena said bitterly. She didn’t want Nayantara to ruin her daughter’s celebration. So she agreed. She walked away, leaving Nayantara alone.

Nayantara looked at Aazad and Abhay. They were standing a little away from her. But their gaze was all alert, ready to fight any threat that came to the queen.

Sensing the silent gesture from Nayantara, Aazad walked to her. ‘My lady, you want something?’

‘The timing should be perfect, Aazad,’ Nayantara whispered.

‘Of course, my lady. But there is one problem.’

‘What?’ Nayantara said in a slightly irritable voice.

‘He is greedy. He is asking for 50 gold coins for this work.’

Nayantara thinned her brows. ‘50 gold coins just to give the news at a specific time?’

‘Yes, my lady.’

Nayantara took a sharp breath before she said, ‘Negotiate with him. And if he still doesn’t agree, then give it.’

‘Okay, my lady,’ Aazad said, and he stepped back to his previous position.

Nayantara walked in, her legs automatically went towards the servant quarters. By then, Vida had handed over all of Nayantara’s belongings to other servants and joined her queen.

Whenever the servants passed by Nayanthara, they would bow their heads respectfully. Their tone had turned extremely polite when they greeted her. A silent whisper running through the servants. The princess, who was all skin and bones and running here and there in rags, was changed so much.

Nayantara knew all this respect was only because she was SiddhantVeer Agnivanshi’s wife. Her value was nothing without her husband’s name behind her. She wanted people to bend in front of Nayantara, not Siddhant’s wife. After coming here, her desire to take back her kingdom was rekindled.

‘Where are you going, my lady?’ Vida asked.

She didn’t reply and stopped in front of the small room. She pushed the door open and stepped in.

‘My lady, you must be tired. Let’s go to your room,’ Vida said again.

‘You go to Siddhant. Prepare his bath,’ Nayantara said, and a confused Vida walked away.

Nayantara looked around, her eyes stung with tears as her past blurred into the present. She walked to the small cupboard and took out one of her old clothes. She can never forget her plight.

‘What are you doing here? I was waiting for you.’ Siddhant’s voice washed over Nayantara. She was startled, and the clothes fell from her hands. She blinked away her tears before she turned around to face him. Vida was also standing behind him.

‘Vida, I sent you to serve the king. Why are you bringing him here?’ Nayantara asked.

‘Auh, the Lord asked me where you…’

‘Leave her, Nayantara,’ Siddhant interrupted. ‘And tell me, what are you doing in this filthy place?’ he said as his eyes roamed over the room in disgust. It was more like a closet than a living space. Its ceiling was so low that Siddhant’s head was almost touching it. A single, dusty window offered a sliver of daylight. An iron cot, its mattress worn thin and lumpy, dominated the space.

‘Auh, this is my daai maa’s room. She wanted some of her belongings, so I…’ Nayantara lied.

‘Whatever. There are other servants to do this. You first come out. The room is so congested and dusty. I don’t want you to pass out because of suffocation,’ Siddhant said as he held her arm and dragged her out.

Nayantara chuckled. ‘I’m not that weak.’

‘Is your room ready or not? I’m in your home. You should guide me through the palace,’ Siddhant said.

Nayantara smiled. ‘Sure, my lord. It must be ready by now.’ She led him to her room, which she herself had not seen for many years.

Siddhant stepped into the chamber and looked around. The chamber was a haven of comfort and privilege. Sunlight streams through tall, arched windows draped in rich velvet curtains. A four-poster bed, draped in shimmering white fabric like a cloud, with soft furs and feather-filled pillows, dominated the center. Across from the bed, a large window offers a view of a rose garden, its fragrance mingling with the faint scent of lavender.

‘Your chamber is beautiful, Nayantara,’ he said.

Nayantara gave a meek smile. ‘Yeah, this is the biggest chamber after the king and queen’s.’ Her father had designed this room for her. But when Vishakha turned five, she wanted this room. So Nayantara’s father told her to give it to Vishakha, as she was her little sister. Nayantara didn’t like her father’s decision but gave it without argument, and she shifted to Vishakha’s room. But after her father’s death, they snatched that room as well and threw her in a servant quarter.

That whole day, Nayantara rested in her chamber. The function was after two days. Siddhant went out in the evening to meet other kings and princes and had dinner with them.

Everyone was nice to Nayantara, and nobody dared mess up with her. The two days passed quickly, and the day of the function arrived.

Every eye fell on Nayantara and Siddhant as they entered the celebration hall.

Nayantara looked elegant in an ivory silk saree with a thick red border. Her hair was restrained in flowing tresses with a garland of jasmine around it. Her presence was captivating. Her confidence shone as brightly as her outfit. She looked small and petite beside her mountain-of-a-husband. Siddhant was wearing a yellow kurta and black pajamas. He complemented her like the sun to the moon. Their presence intertwined seamlessly, reflecting an unspoken connection to their bond.

Vishkha was sitting on the couch in the middle of the room. She was dressed in red attire and adorned with flowers and bangles. Her eyes narrowed as she found Nayantara’s clothes looked more expensive than hers.

Siddhant and Nayantara met everyone. Nayantara introduced Siddhant to her maternal family. Her mama shri, mami shri, and nani maa. They had just arrived as they didn’t want to stay in this palace. For the first time, they came to Anhilwara after Gayatri’s death. Rajendra never let them come to the palace nor let them meet Nayantara. He threatened them that he would ruin them if they interfered in his family matters. They had no idea that Digvijay’s death was not natural. Nayantara was angry with them that they didn’t try to protect her, but she also understood their helpless condition. They had a small princely state, which came under Anilwara. They couldn’t wage the war against Rajendra. Today they were here just to see Nayantara. They were so happy that finally Nayantara could come out of Rajendra’s dark shadow.

They all had a small talk, and Siddhant invited them to Maharav.

Finally, everyone took their place, and the function started.

First, Vishkha’s husband, Jayraj, stood up. He gave her turmeric, wishing her a safe delivery. Then after her in-laws blessed her to have a son. Then her parents blessed her and gave her so many gifts. And then it was Nayantara and Siddhant’s turn. They both stood up and walked to her. They wished her, and the gifts came after them.

Siddhant went back to his place, but Nayantara sat beside her and asked her about her health. She hated Vishakha but not her child. The cataloger started reading the list. There was everything. Diamonds, pearls, gems, and gold. Outstanding clothes and jewelry. The finest perfumes. Unique artistic showpieces. Horses and elephants. The list went on and on. Everyone there was just astonished. It was more than the gifts given by Vishakha’s parents and husband. Nayantara had personally taken care of everything.

By the time the cataloger finished, Vishakha asked in a dry emotionless voice, ‘Why did you give me so many gifts?’

Nayantara sensed some change in Vishakha. Something was off in her. She wasn’t as happy as she appeared.

Nayantara hugged her like a good elder sister. ‘I’m the princess of Anhilwara and the queen of Maharav. I know how to gift someone. I don’t play cheap tricks. I don’t give worn clothes as a gift,’ she whispered in her ear, and Vishkha lowered her eyes.

’This is for your baby. After all, I’m his maasi.’ Nayantara gave a her a soft kiss on her cheek before she stood up and went back to her husband.

Then Jayraj’s five elder sisters and Vishakha and Jayraj’s maternal relatives came to wish her. The elderly women of the family applied special oil to her hair and gave her gifts and blessings for her baby.

Vishakha’s attention was on Nayantara, observing her bond with her husband. Nayantara looked happy with her husband. And for the first time, Vishakha felt jealous of Nayantara. Siddhant was not showing his affection publicly, like Jayraj. But when Nayantara spoke, he listened. When Nayantara suggested something, he considered it. He didn’t just cut her off like her husband. She wanted the same respect for herself. But respect was far away, Jayraj did not even treat her like his wife. She was just to warm his bed. He was a charming and romantic husband in front of everyone, but when they were alone, he was abusive. He was a lazy and greedy man who always drank and smoked.

She took a deep breath and tried to focus on the function.

The men were about to leave, so the women could start their musical function, when one guard dashed into the room and went straight to Rajendra. ‘Your Highness, Maharav army attacked our castle and took control over it,’ he whispered in a barely audible voice and handed him a scroll.

Nayantara closely observed her uncle’s expression as he opened the scroll and read it. His body tensed, and his brows frowned in worry and then in anger when he saw the royal stamp of Maharav Queen at the end.

He stood up and threw the paper towards Nayantara. ‘What the hell is this, Nayantara?’ he shouted.

Siddhant’s jaw hardened. He didn’t know what was in the paper, but nobody could talk to his wife in this tone, but he still remained in his seat as he was her uncle.

Nayantara was expecting this kind of reaction from him. ‘What happened, uncle?’ she asked innocently.

’How dare you take the castle in the air? I had given it to Patyal as a gift.’

‘What? She took the castle?’ Jayraj also stood up.

‘You violated the terms of the treaty. So as the queen of Maharav, I had to take action,’ Nayantara said calmly.

‘What terms?’ Rajendra shouted.

Nayantara gestured the legal executive, and he came forward in front of everyone.

‘Balvinder, tell Your Highness, what are the conditions of the peace agreement under which I’m married to the Lord?’ Nayantara said.

‘I know this agreement. You just come to the point,’ Rajendra said impatiently.

‘So as per clause 27,’ Balvinder started. ‘Anhilwara or Patyal cannot guard the borders that meet Maharav.’

‘We know that. And our army is nowhere near Maharav’s border. And we don’t discuss political things with a woman,’ Jayraj said.

Nayantara’s jaw firmed. ‘If you don’t like discussion then, Maharav’s army will deal with you.’

‘You are…’ Jayraj was about to burst as Rajendra interrupted him.

‘Nayantara, my child, we don’t know what you are talking about?’ Rajendra got scared and immediately came into damage control mode.

Nayantara eyed him satirically. ‘We found your army in the castle and near the border, uncle.’

‘I think it is some kind of misunderstanding. Our army is nowhere near Maharav’s border,’ Rajendra said.

‘You think we will not find out your wicked plan, uncle? You tried to enter opium in the Maharav,’ Nayantara said, and Rajendra was stunned.

Their arguments raged on and on. Vishakha’s father-in-law also jumped into the matter, and Nayantara was the only woman against all the men. She presented some witnesses to prove their crime.

The women there were shocked by Nayantara’s daring. She started gossiping that Nayantara shouldn’t be involved in all this and should learn something from her little sister. Meanwhile, the young girls were impressed with Nayantara’s boldness and found her as an inspiration. And the men were astonished by her knowledge and sharp tongue. Yet, the most unexpected turn was Siddhant’s silence. Here, where everyone anticipated him to discipline his wife, he just sat stoic, not uttering a word to his ill-mannered wife.

On the other side, Vishakha started crying. Not just her function had been ruined, but they had lost the castle. She had nothing to do with the castle, but her husband wanted it. Her father had not given it to him willingly, but he forced Vishakha to ask for it in dowry. And when Vishakha refused, he hit her. If he didn’t get this castle, he would hit her again. It was not that her father had not given anything in dowry. He had already given a lot. But that greedy man always wanted more and more. He didn’t even arrange this function in Patyal, as he didn’t want to take any responsibility. So Vishakha had to come up with the excuse of water crysis and ask her father to arrange the function in Anhilwara. She was relieved that her delivery would take place at Anhilwara. She wanted some break from her husband. A few more tears slipped from her eyes as she remembered the day she married Jayraj. Actually, Jayraj’s parents had asked for Nayantara’s hand as she was elder, but her father somehow convinced them for Vishakha. She was so happy with this. She had gone to Patyal with many dreams for her married life. Everything went well for one month. But then her husband started showing his true colors. She always took what was Nayantara’s. And now she was paying for it. So when her mother told her that Nayantara wanted her room back, she just gave it without any objection.

The argument heated up even more. Vishakha stood up and ran out of the room, but nobody noticed her as they were so engrossed in watching this high voltage drama.

‘We will not give the castle. We are already paying protection tax to Maharav,’ Jayraj raged.

‘You have to, prince. The order has been issued,’ Nayantara said silkily.

‘You arrogant woman, who are you to decide all these?’ Jayraj snapped.

Siddhant stood up abruptly. ‘Prince Jayraj,’ he roared, and the room went completely silent. He couldn’t take his wife’s insult anymore. ’You are asking my wife in front of me that who is she. She is the queen of Maharav, and she is not answerable to anyone for the decisions she makes.’ His thunderous voice rang into the hall, leaving no space for argument.

He stood there for a moment, daring anyone to raise a single question to his wife.

Everyone lowered their eyes in surrender. Satisfied with their obedience, Siddhant strode out of the room.

‘I will not forget my insult. You have to pay for this,’ Jayraj seethed.

Nayantara gave a wry smile. ‘We will see who has to pay,’ she said coldly and left the room.

As she reached her chamber, she found Siddhant sitting on the chair, his back was stiff, and one of his legs crossed over his thigh. His posture was intimidating. His black eyes flashed when they locked on her, and his square jaw ticked.

Nayantara gulped in fear at the intense vulnerability that assailed her whenever he trapped her in his penetrating gaze. Have I done something wrong? Why is he looking at me like this? Am I in trouble?
