Chapter 31

Jael stood waiting for her in the airlock. He wore a teal colored jumpsuit with the von Astrium emblem on his right sleeve, a single blue lobble flower on a white square backdrop. As the air lock closed behind them, Jael tapped a new watch. “Lady Lynn is on board. We can go now.”

“Roger,” Marvis’ voice sounded from the watch.

“Jael, what is going on here?” Lynn asked confused.

“This way, we have much to discuss. Everyone’s waiting in the mess hall. It’s the only place large enough to hold all of us.”

Lynn followed Jael, trying to maintain the urge to ask questions. Williamson followed close by.

The mess hall was crowded, but at least everyone had a chair. “Well don’t you all look like a proper crew dressed in matching jumpsuits. Great work Sir Doyle.” They all wore teal jumpsuits with a single black lobble flower embroidered on the right shoulders.

Although they all sat shoulder to shoulder, the room was still cold. Lynn shivered.

Marvis noticed her discomfort. “My apologies, but we did not have time to finish the temperature regulator before we left.”

“It’s next on the list of things to do,” Rael informed.

“Good because I don’t want to feel like an icicle for the next few weeks. But tell me, how were you all able to pull things together so quickly. I know Anna had folks helping, but this is amazing.”

“By the time we got to the Ship Master’s office, all the paper work was ready to be signed,” Dloakar said.

“This quickness apparently happened to all of us as we set out this morning,” Lunu explained.

Lynn could see the results of Anna’s generosity and it overwhelmed her. “Marvis, is this your parent’s ship?”

Marvis nodded. “Yes. There were 50 engineers working on her when we got here. The papers were in my name, and they refused payment. We got all the essential systems running just before you arrived.”

Lynn did not have to ask about food, because wonderful smells of stew and fresh bread wafted in from the kitchen. Lunu jumped up to go check on things every now and then.

“What cargo are we carrying?” Lynn asked.

Everyone stared at Jael who looked her straight in the eyes. “There was only one shipment destined to Vahvun.”

“And?” Lynn asked after an exaggerated pause. “I’m not going to like it, am I?”

Jael shook his head.

“Just give it to me straight.”

“We’re carrying a shipment of weapons. It was either that or wait 3 days for a shipment of medicine.”

To everyone’s surprise Lynn said, “You made the right decision Jael. Time is of the essence. Although, I never want to know how you came about learning about the shipment. How long before we reach Vahvun, and have we notified Destiny?”

“I’ve already sent word to Peter and Strict,” Dloakar said.

“It’s going to take a week to get there,” Lunu said.

Lynn was getting the strangest feeling that Lunu continued to complete Dloakar’s sentences. Were they really growing that close? Lynn would have to get to the bottom of this, but at another time.

“That is not a lot of time to prepare everyone,” Williamson said.

“Prepared for what?” Lynn asked innocently.

“This cover story only gains us access to Vahvun. Once we’re on the space station, we’ll need a plan to extricate Kyle safely while keeping our cover so that we are not captured. That means everyone will have to be in top shape,” Williamson announced. “As of tomorrow we all start training for this mission.”

Everyone in the room groaned, including Lynn, for Williamson was merciless when training. True to his word, Williamson trained them hard. He even got Dloakar to lift weights with them. Every night they would all meet to strategize about what they would do once they got to Vahvun. Since they were heading into an unfamiliar situation, they worked out several contingency plans. Fortunately, Ulla was there to give them some insights into Vahvun’s layout. In all truth, Lynn walked away feeling more depressed after each meeting. She was leading her friends to their deaths.

Tossing and turning in bed one night, Lynn gave up all pretenses of sleep. She rose, grabbed her photo album and pulled on her jumpsuit. After 10 days in this crowded barge, Lynn was starting to feel a bit claustrophobic. She had found a favorite spot in the cargo bay where she would lay sprawled on her back and stare out at the stars, or sometimes spend time flipping through her family photo album.

The path to her hide out took her past the kitchen. The light of the kitchen was on this night. Suspecting that someone had forgotten to turn the light off, Lynn opened the door and leaned in to flick the light off. Dloakar and Lunu were cooking pancakes for the morning. They did not notice Lynn or say a word. But they moved like dancers, each knowing what the other was about to do. They looked so happy together and Lynn wondered how long these secret rendezvous had been going on. Quietly Lynn closed the door not wanting to intrude. Instead, she went to her secret spot and fell asleep counting stars.

A few days later they were all in the mess hall when the ships warning alarm sounded. Everyone raced to their designated stations. Lynn followed Dloakar onto the bridge. Marvis leaned back from the communications station, “The Juntus are hailing us. I’ve sent them all the proper documents but they’re demanding to speak to the captain.”

“What do we do?” Lynn asked, “They’ll recognize Dloakar and me for sure.”

“What about me?” Williamson asked.

“After Drexos, they’ve probably got your photo plastered everywhere,” Lamean pointed out.

Several others volunteered, all speaking together. “Enough!” Dloakar commanded. “Marvis will do it.”

“Me?” Marvis asked with a quivering voice.

“Yes,” Lynn said smiling reassuringly.

“Why?” Marvis whined. “Jael could do it better than me?”

“And how many deliveries to space stations has he made?” Dloakar asked.

“Marvis this is perfect. You can do this,” Jael encouraged. “You have more experience with cargo transportation than any of us.”

“They will want the view screen on,” Marvis said hesitantly. “When they see how young I am, they’ll laugh.”

“So you tell them you inherited this vessel because of your success. Make up a story.”

“I don’t like lying,” Marvis grumbled, “but I can try.”

“Everyone noticeable get out of the view screen’s vision,” Dloakar ordered.

Williamson, Dloakar, and Lynn hid themselves. Lynn crawled underneath the table Marvis occupied and waited. They remained silent. All Lynn could see was Marvis. She nodded to him when she was ready. Marvis rose and sat down in the captain’s chair before he tapped a control switch on the chair.

“State your name and business,” came the voice of someone that sounded bored as can be.

“Names Marvis. This be my ship, Liberty. We got orders to deliver to Vahvun,” Marvis maintained a calm firm voice, but slipped into an accent he hardly ever used. It was clear to Lynn that he was imitating someone.

“You? But you’re just a whelp,” came the voice.

“That may be so, but I’ve got the papers to prove that she’s mine. A recent purchase due to my success trading on Nuelda. Now let me pass. Vahvun needs this delivery, and I’m already behind schedule.”

Several moments of silence drew out. Marvis was having a staring contest with the person on the patrol ship.

“Go on then,” the voice finally acquiesced.

Everyone sighed with relief when Marvis cut the transmission.

“Good job, captain,” Dloakar said. “You did well. You’ll probably have to do that a few more times. You’ll be okay, just stick with the facts we’ve come up with. Now everyone back to work.”

Marvis heaved a sigh of relief and slumped back in the captain’s chair. “What now?”

“We carry on as planned,” Lynn said.

46 hours later, and after 10 more narrow escapes with patrol ships, Vahvun finally came into view. Everyone crowded onto the bridge to get a look at the sky city. Liberty had just been cleared for docking and this was their last meeting.

“Everyone knows the plan?” Williamson asked.

Rael rolled her eyes, “We’ve only been over it a million times.”

“Indulge me,” Williamson said.

“Everyone but Master George, Lamean and Sir Doyle will remain on board. Dloakar, Jael, Marvis, Lunu, Xoan, and Ulla are responsible for finding Kyle. The rest of us are to stay with Lady Lynn at all times no matter what,” Rael rambled off. “If we get separated, meet back at the ship.”

“Beyond that, remember we’re a cargo crew delivering goods. So stay with the cover story. We don’t want anyone to know our real purpose here,” Dloakar said. “Everyone ready?”

They all nodded. “Then let’s go,” Dloakar ordered, and everyone took their positions.

Before they completed docking, Dloakar stepped up to Lynn and pressed a hypospray into her hands. “Keep this with you at all times. Use it only as a last resort to save yourself. Do you understand?”

Lynn bit her lower lip.

“This is the only way, Pibbel. I will not allow you onto that station unless you promise me that you will come back alive. Now take it.” Dloakar pressed.

Lynn took the hypospray and pocketed it. She hoped that it would not come down to her having to use it, but it could come in handy.

“Oh, and do you have your watch that I gave you?”

Lynn held up her arm, showing Dloakar the delicate communicator watch that he gave to her so many months ago.

“Don’t be a heroin. Promise me you’ll use it when needed.”

“I promise.”

“Williamson, you have yours as well?” Dloakar asked.

Williamson nodded. “I do.”

“Good. Promise me you will do everything within your power to protect Lynn.”

“I will.”

Lynn’s bones rattled as the cargo ship hooked onto the stations air lock. They all stood in the cargo bay ready to deliver the shipment of weapons. Juntu guards entered with weapons at the ready, demanding to see the paperwork. Dloakar handed them the papers and stood silently waiting. Lynn stood to the back, next to Williamson and Stix. Her hair was tied back, and she stood relaxed and tried to look bored. They were relying on no one recognizing her. For if they did, then their secrecy would be gone.

“Where’s the captain?” one of the guards asked.

“I’m right here,” Marvis said, and before the guard could ridicule his age, he said, “Here are my papers proving me the owner and thus captain of this vessel.

The guard snatched the paper and scanned it. “Let them pass,” he said handing the document back. “It’s not like we can let this shipment of weapons go.”

Things moved fast after that as the ship became a hive of activity. Lynn, Williamson, and Stix teamed up to move one of the antigravity pallets. They all paraded down a long hallway to take the shipment to the armory.

The moment Lynn stepped into the armory, the door slammed shut behind her. She was the last person in line and so thought nothing of it, until she heard Williamson roar his battle cry right next to her ear. Lynn looked up and saw hand-to-hand combat all around her. She had no time to prepare, so her instincts took over. She ducked, and pulled the knife that was strapped to her calf, and readied herself. It was chaos and she did not know who was attacking who. At first, she thought it was the Juntus attacking them. Then she dared a glance past the cargo container. There were people fighting the Juntus she did not recognize. Finally, all the Juntus were disposed of. Williamson was about to attack the other group, when Marvis shouted “Stop!”

Williamson panted, “We can’t allow them to warn the station about us.”

Marvis stepped forward ignoring Williamson’s protests. “We are here for Lord Kyle. We mean you no harm,” Marvis sheathed his wrist knives.

“Marvis. Is that you?” a big barreled chested man took a step forward.

Marvis froze. Recognition lighted on his face. One moment he stood planted like a tree. The next he hurtled forward as the big man raced to him. They embraced in a mighty clap nearly knocking each other down.

“You’re alive?” Marvis spoke in unbelief.

“I thought you were dead son,” the big man said.

“What about Mom and Dorcas?”

“They’re here. What are you doing here?”

It was then that Marvis appeared to remember where they were. He turned apologetically to Lynn. “It’s all right. They don’t mean us any harm.”

Lynn was not too sure about that, but for now saw now alternative than to trust Marvis’ judgement. Lynn stepped forward and bowed to the strangers. “Marvis, why don’t you properly introduce us.”

“Oh. Right.” Marvis blushed. “I forgot. Lady Lynn please allow me to introduce my father Raphael von Giraldic. Dad, this is Lady Lynn von Astrium, the royal Princess whom I serve.”

Raphael bowed deeply. “It is an honor to finally meet you, my Lady. But I ask again, why are you here? Why have you come?”

“To rescue Lord Kyle von Talion. Is he alive? Will you take me to him?” Lynn asked.

“Aye, my Lady. He’s alive. In fact he’s leading this rebellion and we have to get these weapons to him.”

“Rebellion?” Lynn asked.

“Yes. I’m afraid you’ve arrived at a dangerous time. We have been planning this for weeks, and only waited on this shipment. We are about to launch a full attack on the Juntus and claim this station.”

“And who will be in charge then?” Dloakar asked.

Raphael shrugged, “Whoever kills Isa von Juntu will be named leader of the station.”

Dloakar turned to Lynn. “The situation has changed.”

Lunu touched Lynn’s shoulder, “Perhaps you should return to the ship.”

Dloakar nodded, “It would be safer if you did.”

Lynn stood staring from one friend to the other. She did not know what was going on, but it felt creepy hearing the two of them speak as if they were sharing one thought, like twinians do. Lynn shook her head. She did not have time to deal with their oddness. She had to get to Kyle. Did they not understand that she would do anything to keep Kyle safe? “No. I will not turn around now.”

Williamson stepped up next to her. “I will not leave your side. This I promise.”

Dloakar sighed, as he shared an ‘I told you so look’ with Lunu. “Come on then. Let’s go help these folks with their rebellion.”

Chapter 32

Kyle paced back and forth behind the podium. “What’s taking so long?” he asked, observing that the gathered crowd was getting more restless with each passing moment.

Hixom lounged lazily in a chair. “Raphael said he’s secured the shipment and they’re on the way.”

“When will they be here?”

Hixom glanced at his watch. “At least 20 minutes if they don’t run into unexpected problems.”

Kyle stopped pacing and drew a deep calming breath. The crowed practically sizzled with anticipation and he could not wait any longer or it would dissolve into chaos. How did he get himself into this mess? No. He did not have the option of doubting himself. He was doing this. Helping these people was important because it was what Lynn would have wanted him to do. He had to survive, if just to see her become queen. But first, he had a battle to win.

Kyle stepped up to the podium and stared at the sea of faces. They grew silent as everyone strained to hear what Kyle was going to say. “Friends! The day has arrived for us to take back our freedom.” The people roared with approval. “I cannot promise that all of you will survive this conflict. Nor can I promise you victory. But what I will promise is that we will all provide a better future for our families or die trying. If there is anyone here who wants to oppose this, speak now.”

No one made even a squeak. By this Kyle knew he had their full attention. “The women and children will remain here. I know the women are as fierce in battle, but you must protect our assets and our rear. Men, you have been assigned your duties. To life and liberty!” Kyle yelled, pumping the air with his fist.

“Life and liberty!” the crowd chanted back. Their enthusiasm raised Kyle’s mood and for the first time he believed that just maybe they would succeed and he would go home.

One of the side doors slid open to reveal Raphael leading a train of men maneuvering cargo containers on antigrav pads. Kyle raised his hands and the crowed quieted once more. He was about to give them instructions on getting their weapons when his heart stopped.

Lynn’s face shone like a beacon in the darkness. Kyle stood mesmerized until Hixom cleared his throat. The crowed stared at him awkwardly waiting for him to proceed. But he had completely forgotten what he was going to say.

Kyle glanced at Lynn, and because he had to say something, he barked “To your stations!” Everyone jumped into action. As Kyle left the stage he turned to Hixom, “Come with me. There is a change in plans.”

Able-bodied men and women stood waiting to receive their weapons, but Kyle paid them no attention, his eyes were fixed only on Lynn. He was both exhilarated to see her and furious at Tristyn for letting her be his rescue team. With each step closer, the muscles in his jaw clenched tighter. Kyle walked right up to her and without any pleasantries yelled, “What in the blazes are you doing here?”

Everyone instantly shrank away from Kyle’s booming voice and no one made a peep.

Lynn being used to his rants stood her ground, just as he had taught her. “I missed you too.”

Kyle stared at her, and then a small smile creeped onto his lips. Giving in to his heart’s desire, he pulled Lynn into his arms and held her close. She smelled like cucumbers and freshness. He pulled away from her suddenly remembering she was the princess and they were not alone. A blush creeped into his cheeks. “I missed you more. But why are you here?”

“We came to rescue you.”

“We?” Kyle glanced around and for the first time recognized Lynn’s friends all dressed in the same blue jumpsuit that she wore, with a lobble flower on the shoulder.

Williamson and four others stood closest to Lynn. The four he did not know but it was apparent they were there to protect Lynn. So Williamson had passed his tests and by the look of things was now Delmi von Astrium. Jael and Xoan stood helping to unload the weapons. Hixom was hugging a girl who Kyle had never seen. Marvis stood next to Raphael talking animatedly fast. Lunu and Dloakar stood next to each other a few steps behind Lynn.

Kyle let go of Lynn and held out a hand to Dloakar. They clasped arms.

Dloakar punched Kyle on the shoulder, “It’s good to see you alive, all be it a bit skinny. You look as if the wind can blow you away.”

Kyle laughed, “It’s good to see you. But why did you bring Lady Lynn here? You know what the Juntus will do to her if they knew she was here.”

Dloakar shrugged, “It was her idea.”

Lunu spoke up then, “And you know how stubborn she can be.”

“Besides, Tristyn would not allow her to rescue you by herself,” Dloakar said.

“So, we came along to help.” Lunu finished.

Kyle’s smile broadened as it became apparent with each sentence that the twinians had been reconciled. Kyle wanted to celebrate with them, but then remembered Lunu did not want Lynn to know she was high born raised. Kyle wondered what Lynn thought of these two, but that discussion was best saved for later.

Turning back to Lynn. Kyle took her hands, and asked, “I give up. What are you doing here when you should be getting ready for a wedding?”

Lynn blinked back tears and bit her lower lip. “It’s a long story, but I will not be getting married any time soon.”

Kyle held her hands and waited patiently.

Lynn sighed. “Tristyn is in love with Suzea, not me. I will not marry him for the title when we don’t love each other. There is more to tell, but the short of it is that I withdrew from the Beauty Gala. Since I had nothing else to do or anywhere to go, I decided to come rescue you.”

“You could have gone home, to Earth I mean,” Kyle spoke deliberately.

Lynn pulled him closer and rested her head on his chest. “I would not have been able to forget all that you sacrificed for me. I did what Grammy taught me. I followed my heart, not my head.”

Kyle’s heart thumped in his chest as he held Lynn close. Was he hearing this right? She had chosen him over becoming queen. With admiration he pulled back and looked at her. Their lips were inches apart, and the feeling of her was intoxicating. He closed his eyes and nearly gave into temptation when he heard someone scream. His eyes flashed open and he assumed a fighting stance, positioning Lynn behind him.

Maggie and Dorcas were running through the crowd towards them. In slow motion, Kyle saw Marvis breaking away from Raphael and run to them. Their bodies collided into each other. Squeals of laughter and tears of joy filled the air. Raphael turned to Kyle, “Turns out my son, Marvis, is part of your rescue team.”

Lynn placed a reassuring hand on Kyle’s shoulder. He stood at ease and took Lynn’s hand in his own, and cherished her touch. “Hixom, I can no longer lead these rebels.”

“But you promised to help us,” Hixom pleaded.

“What do you think I’ve been doing all this time? Playing soldier?”

Hixom remained stubbornly silent. Kyle squeezed Lynn’s hand for reassurance. “All these people here know that you are the true general of this army, not me. You have planned out every detail and every contingency. The men are ready and willing to follow you. You just need to believe in yourself.”

Hixom clenched his fists. “I am no match for Isa.”

“No, but I am,” said the girl standing next to Hixom. “We can do this together, Dad.”

“You know my first duty is to protect the royal heir, above all else,” Kyle focused his attention on Lynn. “Hixom, I present to you her Highness Lady Lynn von Astrium, who is responsible for bringing you those weapons, and who is also the lost royal heir.”

On cue, Lynn bowed to Hixom. “It is a pleasure to meet you. Your daughter, Ulla, has spoken highly of your courage in the face of insurmountable odds.”

Hixom blushed at the praise and returned the bow. “The pleasure is all mine, your Highness.” Hixom straightened. “I cannot spare any men to escort you to your ship.”

“There will be no need. We will accompany you to the main hanger deck and from there make our way to the ship,” Kyle said.

“When do we go?” Marvis asked. He stood with one arm around his mother and the other around his sister. He was a head taller than they, and so he looked very protective.

“In 10 minutes. You should get to safety, Maggie,” Kyle suggested taking one of the weapons Jael offered.

“No, we are coming with you,” Maggie insisted, crossing her arms and daring anyone to argue with her.

“Blasted woman. I don’t want you in danger,” Raphael said.

“I will not leave my family again after only being reunited for 2 minutes. Where Marvis goes, I go.” Maggie stood glowering at Raphael.

“Then we will all stay,” Raphael announced, looking apologetically at Hixom.

“I cannot,” Marvis informed his family. “My duty and honor lies with Lynn. She has been my family while we’ve been apart. I will not desert her now.”

Raphael was about to protest so Kyle intervened. “What Marvis says is true. Besides you’re not going to win this argument, Raphael. Even if we leave them, they’re just going to follow us. May as well keep them close as it’s the safest they’ll be.”

Raphael reluctantly nodded but then pointed a finger at each of his family members, “You will stay close and not leave my side. Promise?”

They nodded and that settled it.

Kyle turned to Williamson, “Your team is responsible for Lynn’s protection at all times.”

Williamson nodded to his team, and immediately they moved into formation to flank Lynn on all sides. “I will not leave her side,” Williamson vowed.

Kyle had to admit he was impressed with the confidence and respect that Williamson managed his team. The young lad had blossomed under Lynn’s tutelage. She would make a wonderful mother someday.

“Ahem!” Hixom cleared his throat.

Kyle broke his gaze having stared at Lynn. He blushed but chose to ignore Hixom’s chuckles. “Everyone ready?”

A cheer from his group sounded and it gave Kyle hope that just maybe they would survive this. As they filed out, Hixom and his squad took the lead, followed by Lynn and her guards. Everyone else brought up the rear with Kyle, Lunu and Dloakar watching for any enemy approaching the rear. Hixom led them down the route they had planned weeks ago. It was supposed to have the fewest guards on duty. Nonetheless, they moved with caution and remained silent.

They had just passed the mid-way mark when a guard spotted them. Dloakar fired and took out the guard, but not before he was able to trigger the alarm.

“Pick up the pace,” Kyle yelled, “we need to hurry.”

Hixom took off jogging without hesitation. The others hurried to keep up.

“What’s the hurry?” asked Dloakar.

“Once the alarm is sounded, there’s only 30 minutes before they go into lock down mode. Anyone caught on this side of the door will die if they are in the vicinity of the doors.”

“How?” Lunu asked.

“Poisonous gas,” Kyle said.

“Will we make it in time?” asked Dloakar.

“It all depends on how heavily they have fortified the door. We may be in for the fight of our lives,” Kyle explained.

No more needed to be said after that. The only sound was that of boots pounding on the deck plating and people breathing steadily. Time ticked by too fast. Kyle wanted to run full out to the doors, but they dared not get delayed by cross fire, and so they stopped at every turn to make sure no one lay waiting for them.

Finally, they reached the point of no return. Hixom stopped and waited for everyone to catch up. “Last chance to turn around.”

No one replied but all nodded that they understood the risk.

Hixom shrugged, “Oh well, don’t get left behind.”

Hixom gave the orders and quickly the group split and lined up against the wall, just in case someone decided to fire at them once the door to the main hanger opened. Hixom popped off the door control panel, cut a few wires, and then rewired them. He neatly closed it back up. “We ready?”

“Do it,” Kyle said.

Hixom placed his hand on the panel and the door slid open. Everything seemed to happen at once. A grenade sailed through the air and landed in their midst. Everyone turned, ducked and covered. The explosion went off with a bang. Kyle was thrown a few feet down the hall. He regained his footing and ran for the door, jumping over his friends who were still recovering from the shock grenade. He fired his weapon on a wide beam setting and ran for cover. Dloakar was right on his heels. Both of them had been trained to deal with the side effects of a shock grenade, and so were able to recover quicker than the rest.

Kyle glanced at his watch. “We’ve got five minutes before that door closes,” Kyle said pointing to the doors at the other end of the hanger where 50 men stood hiding beyond a barricade randomly firing at them.

“We’re not gonna make it. We should turn back,” Dloakar suggested.

“We can’t,” Kyle said.

“Look at them,” Lunu said once she had reached them.

Kyle’s gaze followed hers. They were all a wreck. Everyone looked as if a ten-ton brick wall had fallen on them. “You two help them. I’ll go deal with the welcoming party.”

“How?” Dloakar asked.

“I’ll think of something. Now go,” Kyle said as he hurled himself over the crates he had been hiding behind and ran for the next closest cover. Kyle scanned the hanger for anything useful as he kept up firing at the enemy. He had no idea what he was going to do. Soon he was joined by the blue haired girl from Lynn’s guard.

“When that crate gets close to the door, fire at it,” she said at Kyle’s elbow.

“What?” Kyle asked.

“Just do it, okay,” the girl said. “Oh, and by the way. I’m Rael. Remember that when I save our lives. Cover me.”

Kyle had no chance to object. As Rael sprinted across the hanger, Kyle laid down cover fire for her. She was too far away for him to make out what she was doing, but moments later one of the containers lifted in the air and sailed to the door. Kyle waited until it was a few feet away from the enemy and fired. A fire ball engulfed the barricade and all that had been hiding there.

Rael jogged past Kyle and back to Lynn, the threat completely neutralized. “No need to thank me.”

Kyle laughed as the sprinkler system came on and squelched the fire. Kyle looked at his watch. One minute left. “Run!” he bellowed.

Those that could ran, while others limped forward with the help of friends and family. To Kyle’s relief Lynn seemed okay, but she was moving too slow.

Williamson scooped Lynn up and ran past Kyle, “You coming, my Lord?”

Kyle turned and ran. He was the first through the door and shouted orders as people came through, making sure they were ready for the enemy. Kyle heard an anguished scream and turned to see Lunu stumble through the closing door with Dorcas in her arms.

“Hurry!” Lunu screamed as tears spilled out of her eyes.

Dloakar shoved Maggie through the door as it closed inches in front of his face.

“No!” Kyle shouted pushing his way to the door. “Hixom, open it!”

“I can’t” Hixom spoke quietly. “I’m sorry.”

Instead of trying to outrun the poisonous gas, Dloakar stood at the door looking at them through the window. He smiled, bowed to them, and then collapsed as the unseen gas filled the room.

Lunu sunk to her knees and shook uncontrollably. “He said he was sorry,” Lunu said rocking back and forth. “He said he loved us as family and for us to take care of each other.”

Kyle pulled Lunu to her feet and hugged her. He could not bear hearing the thoughts of his dying friend.

“He said to be happy, marry and have children.” At these last words Lunu dug her face into Kyle’s chest and wept.

After a few moments, Hixom approached. “We have to go. We cannot linger here any further.”

Kyle nodded. “Go Hixom. Take your team and go kill the bastard. He is to blame for all of this.”

Hixom bowed. “It has been a pleasure knowing you.”

“Likewise.”

And with that Hixom, Ulla and their squad left.

“Lunu, we also have to go.” Kyle reached down and took Lunu’s hand. “I promise I won’t let go.”

Lunu nodded, and Kyle accepted her sorrow. He would mourn Dloakar’s death later in his own manner, but first he had to get everyone to safety. Kyle looked around assessing their situation. Marvis and Jael stood as lookouts, keeping an eye out for any enemy. Maggie stood by Raphael, while Xoan examined the unconscious Dorcas who was still out from the shock grenade. Williamson and his guard formed a tight circle around Lynn, acting like a human shield. Lynn stood still, refusing to meet Kyle’s eyes, biting her lower lip. He knew she must be torn up by Dloakar’s death, and was putting up a good front hiding it.

“Marvis and Jael take the rear. The rest of you in the middle. Let’s move.” Kyle took the lead still clinging to Lunu’s hand, and almost dragging her along. Occasionally Lunu would sniffle. But beside that, things were quiet. Almost too quiet. Kyle heard fighting up ahead and motioned for everyone to stop. They were in no shape to fight. He hoped that whatever and whoever was up ahead would move off in a few minutes.

Lynn came up to him then. “What’s the hold up?”

“We need to catch our breath. How are you?”

Lynn crossed her arms and stared at him coldly. “Fine.”

Kyle was surprised that Lynn was mad at him, but he was at a loss to understand about what. “Are you mad at me?”

“No.”

“Good.” Kyle hated not being able to take her aside and find what was going on, but this was hardly the place or time. Deep in Kyle’s heart, he felt like he was betraying Lynn by holding onto Lunu and protecting her. He did not have the time or permission from Lunu to explain this to Lynn that he did this because of his childhood bond with Dloakar and Lunu.

Lynn huffed. “Fine. Yes. I’m angry at you.”

Kyle stood baffled. “Why?”

“You really don’t remember what got you into this mess?”

“How was I supposed to know Voltaire would knock me out and drag me across the galaxy?” Kyle’s voice rose as he sputtered every word. Lunu squeezed his hand. He looked down at Lunu who was shaking her head. Kyle calmed a bit.

Lynn clamped her fists observing their exchange. When she spoke it was barely audible. “Where is my necklace?”

Kyle was not sure he had heard right. Their lives were at stake and she was concerned about her necklace. “What?”

“You lied to me. You had my necklace. That is why they kidnapped you. That is why we are here.”

Kyle knew what she really meant s; Dloakar died because of Kyle’s lies and the secrets he had kept from her. “I’m sorry. I had planned to give it to you once I knew it was safe.”

“That was not your decision to make.”

“I know.”

Lynn looked away, but when she looked back there was a small ounce of forgiveness in her eyes. “So, where is the necklace?”

“Isa has it. He keeps it on a pedestal underneath the von Astrium lobble vase, in a room at the top of the station. I told Hixom about it, and he’ll secure it. But now it is time for us to move and get to safety.”

Lynn fell back into formation without another word. Then out of nowhere an explosion went off behind them, followed by rapid fire and footsteps heading their way.

“Run!” Kyle ordered as the first Juntu guard rounded the corner.

They ran down the hall, and passed through the armory, then through another tunnel that spilled out into the walkway that led to the ship. Kyle pumped his arms and feet and ran for the ship. He halted at the airlock, turned and laid down fire as the others poured out of the tunnel. Everyone was there but Lynn and her guard. Kyle held his breath hoping that she was alive and willing her to appear. After several long agonizing seconds, Lynn and her guard burst through the tunnel exit.

“Marvis, get us on board now!” Kyle ordered.

“I’m working on it,” Marvis said.

“Work harder. We’ve got company.” Kyle wanted to run to Lynn, but knew he would be of more help from where he stood.

Then Lynn did the dumbest thing ever, or so he thought at the time. She ripped a grenade from the belt of a corpse, armed it, and threw it down the tunnel.

“Take cover!” Kyle shouted. Grenades were no place for fighting in close quarters. Kyle threw himself over Lunu. The grenade sent a wave of heat down the tunnel and then up into the cargo bay.

“I got it!” Marvis shouted as the air lock popped open. He did not wait for an invitation, but scrambled in.

Kyle stood at the airlock, waving everyone through. Lynn and her guards were a few feet away.

“Go!” Lynn yelled, and Kyle did not have to be told twice. He ducked into the airlock. On the other side, everyone stood ready to fire at anyone who was a foe that came through that door.

Kyle heard the air lock shut behind them. He was relieved. They were safe. Then he smelled plastic and metal burning. He swung around and faced the sealed airlock. “Where’s Lynn?”

Chapter 33

Lynn lowered her weapon and stared at the melted airlock controls she had just destroyed. She could see Kyle through the small window screaming at her.

Lynn loved Kyle. She knew that now, but she couldn’t let her necklace fall into the enemy’s hands. Now that she knew that her necklace and the lobble vase was part of a key to something important, she decided she was getting her necklace and then going home, to Earth, and that was that.

Lynn turned and smashed straight into Williamson’s chest. “What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be on the ship,” Lynn said bewildered.

Williamson shook his head. “I made a promise to not leave your side, and a vow to protect you. I do not break my promises.”

“Fine. You can come.” Lynn relented.

“Let’s go. I think there is an airlift this way.”

“I’m not getting on a ship,” Lynn said, refusing to move.

Williamson kept walking and said over his shoulder. “Who said anything about a ship?” Williamson said smiling. “Come on let’s go get your necklace.”

Lynn gawked at his back. “You know, I really taught you too well.”

“Ha! I learned from the best.”

Sure enough, as he had promised, Williamson led them to an airlift. The tunnel they were in spilled out into a spiral hallway that seemed to run the entire height of the station. Across the width of the space station they spied an airlift. The only problem was a battle lay between them and where they needed to go. From the looks of things, the Juntus appeared to be winning. The rebels were cornered in a clothing store, filled with dressed up mannequins. An explosion erupted, tossing Juntu bodies and mannequin heads through store windows. Lynn crouched instinctively and waited for things to settle. Nobody moved. They were all dead.

“No!” someone shrieked from inside the store. It sounded like a girl.

Lynn ran to the store, Williamson behind her. She ignored the blown up body parts and refused to acknowledge the smell of blood that clung thick to the air. “Ulla, are you all right?” Lynn asked, racing to the young woman.

Ulla sat crying, cradling Hixom’s limp body. Ulla nodded in response to Lynn’s question as tears spilled over her cheeks.

Lynn knelt down and felt for Hixom’s pulse. It was there, but barely. “He’s alive” she said to everyone’s relief.

“Will he live?” Ulla asked.

Lynn considered her options, pawing the hypospray that rested in her pocket. Either she used it now or saved it for later. Then again, if Ulla had not risked everything they would not have been able to save Kyle. She owed the girl this much, one life for another. She knew she was supposed to save it for herself, but this felt right. She could not allow Hixom to die. Lynn took the hypospray out and before Williamson could object, she injected Hixom with the nanubits.

“What did you do that for?” Williamson shouted, plainly angry.

“Because it was the right thing to do,” Lynn said.

Within minutes, Hixom was breathing comfortably and appeared to be in a deep sleep. Lynn rose and stretched her back. “We need to go. It’s best if you stay here hidden, Ulla.”

Lynn and Williamson were about to leave when Ulla said, “Here take this.” She held out a small piece of paper that had numbers written on it.

“What is it?” Williamson asked.

“It’s an access code. It will allow you to take the airlift to the top floor, bypassing all other floors. When you get to Isa, do me a favor. Kill him for me.”

Williamson took the scrap of paper. “Will do.”

With that they left Ulla, making sure to move some clothing racks so as to obscure the view so that no one would be able to see them from the spiral hallway.

The ride to the top floor was quiet. One by one, they flew past the battles taking place at all levels. There was no way to tell who was winning, only that men were losing their lives. The only way to stop this madness was to get to Isa. Now that Hixom had failed, it was up to Williamson and Lynn to do this.

Williamson finished checking his weapons. He carried a sword at his waist, a collapsed shield on his back, and a pistol in his hand. “Lynn when we reach the top, I want you to get the necklace and go. Isa will stop at nothing to kill you.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Take care of the vermin.”

“I can’t leave you to face Isa alone. I will not lose another friend today.”

“Do you have so little faith in me?”

Lynn struggled with her emotions. She shook her head. Williamson drew her into an unexpected hug. “I was trained to protect you. Now let me fulfill my duty. I will not fail you. I will kill Isa.”

The airlift chimed and the door slid open. They had arrived. Delicate soft green carpet led the way up the spiral hall and ended at a glass floor. Lynn stood awed at seeing the station beneath her feet. She felt like she was floating in the sky and so her stomach felt queasy. In an attempt to get a grip on her nerves she looked up and saw the pedestal that stood at the center of the rotunda.

Throwing caution out the window, Lynn ran to pick up the lobble flowered vase that stood on the pedestal. “It looks exactly like the ones on Destiny that I destroyed,” she said admiring the detailed painted lobble flowers. The pattern was so familiar to her; she had traced it often during her summer visits with her grandparents.

“What’s this?” Williamson asked. He stuck his hand into the top of the pedestal and pulled out the necklace.

Lynn shrieked with glee, thrusted the vase into Williamson’s arms while grabbing the necklace. This was the only piece of her family that she had with her. The engraved flower stared up from the pendent. She flipped it over, and on the back read Piapish Mishtum. “I can’t believe we found it,” she said, slipping the necklace over her head. The moment the pendant rested in place, the world felt right again as a surge of energy and excitement passed through her. Lynn could not explain the joy and determination that welled up in her.

“What should I do with the vase?” Williamson asked.

“Bring it with us. It rightfully belongs to me, so it’s not stealing.”

They turned to go back the way they had come, but to their horror a solid door had slid into place, blocking off their exit. They looked around to see if there was an override latch or something. Anything. But nothing. They were trapped.

Lynn started to panic but then remembered her watch. “Quick, activate your tracking signal on your communicator,” Lynn said as she popped open her watch’s lid and pressed the tiny red button. She looked up to see Williamson staring at her, sorrow dancing in his eyes. “No,” Lynn said in a quivering voice. “Williamson, where’s your watch?”

Williamson pulled a hand over his weary face and refused to look at her. “I lost it in an earlier battle. It was destroyed. But why is yours not working? You should have been gone by now.”

“I don’t know,” Lynn said looking down as the seconds ticked by.

“There could be a jamming signal or…”

“Or what?”

“Or there is no one there to transport you.”

Lynn’s jaw stiffened. “I refuse to believe that.”

The silence stretched out before them as both contemplated the possibility that they were the only ones left to fight this battle. Williamson reached into his pocket and held out the Avioran crystal and the vase to her. “Here take this.”

“No, it’s yours to protect.”

“Lynn, we don’t know what will happen. But I promise you this, nothing will happen to you. Do you trust me?”

“Yes,” Lynn said with a quivering voice.

“Then take it.”

With trembling fingers, she took the crystal and the vase. “What now?”

“Guess we move forward.”

“But it has to be a trap.”

“Indeed, but at least we know it’s one. Let’s explore a bit to see if we can’t find another way out.”

When they looked around, they found the place desolate. It appeared as if everyone who had been lounging around left in a great hurry. In the cinemascope a movie played to empty seats. In the men’s club room smoke drifted from cigars dropped in ashtrays. A kettle whistled in the kitchen of the lady’s hall, where handbags lay strewn all around.

“Where did everyone go?” Lynn wondered.

“Over here,” Williamson called, poking his head out of a door down a narrow hall.

Lynn headed into the hall, just wide enough for people to walk single file. The hall ended and off to one side was a room. Williamson stood scratching his head. He pointed at 10 human sized tubes in the wall. He bent over and stared at a control panel.

“What do you make of this?” Lynn asked.

“I can’t know for sure, but I’m guessing these were escape pods. This is probably how they all got away unnoticed.”

“Any left?”

“I don’t think so. There’s no way we can even tell if Isa used one or not. For all we know, he can be long gone.”

“I doubt that. He’s invested too much in this station to give it up that easy. If we find him, we may find out what is blocking the signal.”

Williamson headed for the door. “There’s only one door left. Let’s go see what we can find.”

The automatic door would not open as they approached like all the others had. “Try entering the code that Ulla gave you,” Lynn suggested, clinging to the vase in one hand and the orb in the other.

Williamson motioned for her to stand to one side of the door. Drawing his weapon, he nodded at her and then punched in the numbers.

The door whooshed open and an oily voice said, “Please come in. I’ve been expecting you.”

Lynn stole a peak at the wiry man with glasses teetering on his nose. He sat behind a triangular desk on the far side of the room.

“Come in. I promise I will not hurt you. I know when I’ve been out smarted.”

Lynn looked to Williamson for a decision. He just shrugged. Clearly the decision was all hers. Well, there was nowhere else to go so she could at least learn what the man wanted. Lynn took a nervous breath, calmed her thumping heart and stepped into the room.

Williamson followed weapon trained on the man. “Who are you?”

“I’m Isa von Juntu. And you are?”

Lynn stared at the man who was supposed to be a distant relative. The only recognizable feature was his perfect nose. “I’m Lady Lynn von Astrium.”

Isa steeped his fingers in front of his chest in thought. “I expected as much. It is a pleasure to meet you. I see you helped yourself to our family heirlooms.”

Lynn clutched the vase tighter, and slipped the orb into her pants pocket. No way she was going to allow Isa to lay his crummy hands on her things every again.

“Do you even know what they do?” Isa asked.

“It matters not.”

A sinister smile framed Isa’s otherwise pointy face. “Oh, but it does. Allow me to educate you on a family secret. There is a weapon so powerful on Saldiora, it is said to give the yielder anything that is asked of it. Those items you hold are part of the key that makes it work. Although I have no idea where you found the crystal that I’ve been looking for all these years. Therein lies my dilemma. All though you are family, I cannot allow such power to fall into the hands of my enemies. So, I will make you an offer. Join forces with me and I promise you will rule Saldiora, instead of my niece Brigieta.”

Lynn gasped at the confirmation of this truth that she had harbored for so long. Although Ulla had told her, she had needed to hear it straight from this man for it truly sink in. The Juntus killed Juke and Dloakar, kidnapped Dr. Phyldoa’s family and Kyle, and tried to kill her several times. It was apparent that they would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. No matter what, she knew there was no way she could ever trust Isa.

“Never,” Lynn spat. “Not after all you’ve done since my arrival. I will never trust a single word you say.”

“A pity.” Isa dropped his hands to the desk and a small click could be heard.

Williamson tackled Lynn to the floor. A beam of light burned into the wall above their heads. “Stay down,” Williamson said as he shoved Lynn underneath the table. He fired back at Isa and made his way around the triangular table, gaining ground. The pistol shots stopped as Williamson launched himself at Isa. A scuffle ensued and both were disarmed within seconds, the pistols laying scattered and forgotten. Both men had drawn their swords and were fighting ferociously in close combat.

Isa was older but more nimble on his feet. Williamson made up for his lack of experience with brute strength. After a few minutes of Williamson’s powerful strikes, Isa’s resolve seemed to be weakening. Williamson went all out, venting his frustration with each calculated blow. He raised his sword and crashed down on Isa. A crack sounded as Isa’s sword broke. Isa fell back on his rear.

Williamson held the tip of his sword to Isa’s throat. “Do you surrender?”

“Yes,” Isa sneered.

“Turn off whatever is blocking our signals,” Williamson demanded.

Isa rose reluctantly and walked over to the desk. Isa tapped a few strokes. “It’s ready.”

“Do it.”

Isa tapped the screen. Then to Lynn’s horror, Isa drew a hidden dagger from under the table, turned and plunged the dagger into Williamson’s chest.

Williamson did not hesitate a moment. As the knife entered his chest, his sword sliced through Isa’s neck. The decapitated head rolled over the floor. Empty shocked eyes stared at Lynn. She gulped back the bile rising in her throat.

Blood soaked Williamson’s shirt as he looked at Lynn apologetically.

Lynn took a step forward, but her body felt as if it was coming apart.

Williamson smiled at her and collapsed to the floor.

“No!” Lynn shouted as the image of Williamson dying disappeared and was replaced by a fountain of blinding light.

Chapter 34

Kyle appeared before Lynn as she was transported onto the ship. A mix of worry and anger radiated from him. “Are you all right?” he finally asked as she appeared hysteric.

Lynn shook all over from shock. “Send me back immediately. Williamson is dying. We have to rescue him.”

“We can’t,” Kyle said as he tapped his communicator. “Marvis, we have Lynn. Get us out of here.”

“No. We have to go back!” Lynn shouted.

Kyle took a step forward, but Lynn backed away from him. “The Juntu ships have us cornered, Lynn. We were barely able to get to you. We have to get away now or everyone on board is going to die.”

“No!” Lynn sobbed and sank to the floor.

Kyle sat down next to her, but kept his distance. “I see you found the vase and necklace. I just hope it was worth it.”

Lynn remained silent. If not for her stubbornness, Williamson would still be alive. She had done this. She was responsible for his death. She knew he would protect her, and like a silly child she thought he was unbeatable. And for what? A lousy weapon that she did not even know where to find and what it did.

“What happened?” Kyle asked quietly.

“It was a trap. After we reached the vase, he locked us in. The bastard was waiting for us in his conference room. We went in, chatted, then he tried to kill me, but Williamson fought him bravely. They killed each other, and you whisked me away.”

“Isa is dead?”

“Decapitated. He’s not coming back from that.”

“Did Isa tell you about the vase?”

“Yes.” Lynn stared at the vase in her lap and felt the comfort of the necklace against her skin. The Avioran crystal in her pocket was a reminder as well, but she decided to not tell Kyle about the crystal. “These heirlooms are all part of some key to a weapon on Saldiora.”

The ship lurched to one side as an explosion roared outside the hull. Lynn landed in Kyle’s lap, clinging to the precious vase. He held her close in his strong arms. For a moment, she felt safe. She just wanted him to hold her close and tell her everything was going to be all right. But then, he let her go.

“We should go to the bridge,” Kyle said rising and heading for the door, leaving her behind.

Lynn reluctantly rose and followed. The bridge was packed and busy as everyone tried to shout over each other. Warning bells sounded, and Lynn could see from the view screen that they were surrounded.

“Enough!” Kyle shouted.

Everyone stopped talking.

“Marvis. Report,” Kyle ordered, taking the empty captain seat. There was no doubt who was in charge now. Lynn bit the inside of her cheek. By birth she was in charge, but she knew Kyle was capable to lead them out of this crisis, so she kept her mouth shut.

“We’re surrounded with one engine down and the other one sputtering along. Shields are down to 10%. Only one more hit and we’ll be toast.”

“Do we still have warp capability?”

Marvis looked at Raphael who said, “Yes.”

“Everyone hold on. Lamean, warp us out of here.”

“But we’re too close to the planet… we may implode,” Rael argued.

“We’re going to have to risk it. Do it. Now!” Kyle shouted.

Lamean mumbled something under his breath about not being a miracle worker, but then he turned to his station. Lynn grabbed the back of the captain’s chair as they warped away.

“Is anyone following us?”

Marvis checked the scanner. “Yes. There are 4 traversials in pursuit, but they won’t be able to catch up to us until we drop out of warp.”

“Do we know where Destiny is?”

“Yes,” Lynn said stepping forward. “Destiny is hiding behind one of Nuelda’s moons. Peter is in charge.”

“Marvis, what is our heading?” Kyle asked.

Marvis grinned wickedly. “We’re heading to Nuelda.”

“Send a message to Destiny. Let her know we’re bringing some company. How long until we get there?”

“3 days, 4 hours and 28 minutes,” Lamean replied.

“Marvis, you can have the bridge back. I suggest that everyone get some rest while we can.”

Lynn was about to turn and leave, when Jael asked. “Where is Williamson?”

Lynn could not face them, but swallowed down her pride and did so none the less. “He’s dead.”

It was as if the air left the room as everyone stood, staring at her.

“How?” Marvis asked quietly.

“Isa stuck a dagger into his chest and then Williamson beheaded Isa. They lay dying in each other’s blood when I was transported.”

Kyle took a step closer as if to comfort her, but Lynn stopped him with her ice cold stare. “Don’t. I know it’s my fault. Now if you’ll excuse me, I just need to be alone.” Lynn’s voice broke as she turned and ran for her quarters. There she collapsed onto her bed. Lynn pulled her backpack closer. She took out the three books she carried in there and leafed through them. She found no comfort looking at Dechou’s prophesies, or reading her Beauty Gala notes. But paging through the family album that Anna had given her brought tears to her eyes as she longed for her family back on Earth. At least they loved her unconditionally. Lynn placed all the books back in her pack, and then laid down with the lobble vase next to her. She fell asleep tracing the patterns on the vase much as she had done as a child chasing the exact same pattern on her duvet.

Hours passed and when she woke, the smell of dinner made her stomach grumble. She would have stayed in her quarters with her own thoughts, but her physical needs won over her emotional needs. Lynn headed to the kitchen expecting to see Lunu there, but to her surprise it was Maggie that was cooking. No one else was there yet.

“Can I help?” Lynn asked.

Maggie turned a warm smile to Lynn. “Sure, why don’t you set the table for us and let Marvis know to tell everyone that dinner will be ready in 10 minutes.”

Lynn did as she had been asked. After talking to Marvis over the intercom, she helped Maggie bring all the warm dishes to the table. Lynn had loved their evening meals together as a crew. It was the only time of the day when everyone would be in the same room.

Tonight’s meal was subdued and quiet. No one spoke and everyone kept their eyes focused on their plates. After dinner, everyone pushed aside their plates and sat back content.

Kyle stood and addressed them all. “First off, I have to say what a delicious meal that was Maggie. Thank you.”

“Well it was wonderful to have proper ingredients to cook with again. I’ll have us fattened up within a week.”

Lynn looked at Kyle carefully and for the first time took in what she saw. He was bony and the skin stretched taught over his face and hands. He looked weary and defeated. What had happened to him while he was gone? He was not the same man she had met months ago. Some of his innocence had been lost, replaced by a hard reality that the good guys don’t always win.

Kyle cleared his throat and continued. “I also want to say thank you.” Kyle refused to look Lynn in the eyes, and instead stared straight ahead as he said “None of you had to make the perilous journey to rescue me, but you did none-the-less. I also recognize you did so, not because of love for me, but because of your devotion to Lynn.”

Kyle reached out and took Lunu’s hand as he said the next words. “We have lost some honorable men today. Dloakar was a brother to me, and Williamson as a son. They will both be mourned. But for their sacrifice in saving others and destroying the wicked, I will honor their memories forever. We will rendezvous with Destiny in 2 days. At which point many decisions will need to be made. I suggest we all take time to figure out what we are going to do. Thank you.” Kyle pulled Lunu to her feet and headed to the door.

Before they all started filing out, Lynn rose and said, “I have something to say.”

They all froze as if caught by a trap. Kyle pulled Lunu close and protectively wrapped an arm around her waist, comforting the girl who was visibly holding back tears. How Lynn longed to be the one in Kyle’s arms, but that would now never be. She had lost too much already. Between losing Tristyn, Dloakar, Williamson and now painfully Kyle she could not stand her fate anymore. No sense in delaying the inevitable. She made up her mind.

“I will not be returning to Saldiora,” Lynn announced.

A chorus of “no,” “what,” and “why” filled the room. Lynn held up a hand effectively shushing them all. She looked at each and evaluated the love she held for them in her heart. They had suffered enough because of who she was and her selfish choices. No more. They would never understand, and so the only way for this to work was to make them believe she did not care about them anymore.

“My life is on Earth, not Saldiora. Everything that I had set out to do on Saldiora has already been stripped away from me. There is no reason for me to return. I want to go home. To my home on Earth.”

“Then we will go with you,” Jael said, earning him a few nods from the group. Well, all except Lunu.

“No. I will not allow you to. Each of you have full lives to lead here. You should return to your own home, and I to mine.”

“You’re giving up?” Kyle asked, still clinging to Lunu.

“I’m accepting my reality. I am not to be queen, my family heirlooms have been returned to me, and now you have been rescued. It is best if I go away.” That way I can also take these dangerous keys away from Saldiora, where no one will be able to use them. Keep the keys safe, she thought, but dared not tell anyone.

“You are many things Lynn Davis, but I never took you to be a coward,” Kyle said with clear disgust.

His words cut her deeper than he would ever know. To them it would seem as if she was running away, but in truth it took all her strength to let them go in order to keep them safe. At least it was working. “I may be a coward, but I’m not a liar,” Lynn spat back.

“I told you. I kept secrets to protect you,” Kyle protested.

“And what was the point of hiding the fact that Dloakar was Lunu’s brother?” Lynn staggered as her eyes fell on Lunu. Lunu returned the gaze, lost for words.

“You knew?” Kyle questioned, his body shaking from exhaustion.

“There twinian behavior was obvious the more I spent time with them during this rescue mission. When Lunu spoke her brother’s dying words, it confirmed my belief.”

“I’m sorry we didn’t tell you sooner, but it wasn’t my story to tell.”

“That still makes you a liar. I’m tired of all these games, and I don’t want anything more to do with this or you.”

“But you’re the royal princess. It’s your duty!” Kyle’s anger rose with each uttered sentence. The others in the room had grown quiet watching this showdown between them. Lynn knew that if this was to succeed, she had to do it now.

“No. Tristyn is the royal heir and Suzea will be queen. Not me. Isa is dead and Saldiora is safe. I have done my duty and played the part of pawn in your planet’s war. Now I will go home.” She clipped out each sentence, her own anger boiling to the surface. What right had he to question her when he was breaking her heart by holding Lunu in his arms.

“And how do you suppose you’re going to get to Earth?” Kyle asked.

“That is for me to worry about.”

“But I’m charged with your protection.”

“Then I release you and yours of any duty and honor endowed upon the von Astrium house.”

Gasps filled the room. Lynn knew the full meaning of her words. It was the customary phrase she was supposed to use in order to absolve any formal alliance between their houses.

“Fine,” Kyle roared at her. He stalked out with Lunu in tow.

Lynn wanted to shout at him to come back. She wanted to tell them all how much she loved them, and that she was making this sacrifice for them. But if she showed any weakness in her resolve at this moment, then there would be no going back.

The next days passed in awkward silence. Everyone went about their chores, as if nothing was out of place. Lynn and Kyle avoided each other, but Lynn noticed that Kyle spent all his free time talking with Lunu. Lunu must be as close to Kyle as Dloakar had been. But was she like a sister to him, or more? So many questions left unanswered, but she had lost the desire to care. Her heart was numb and she was so tired of all the lies that she didn’t know what or who to trust anymore.

When they finally reached Destiny, everyone was relieved. Anna had come through for them again. A fleet of Nuelda ships lay in wait for the Juntus. As they dropped out of warp, the Nuelda fleet opened fire and disabled all movement capabilities of the traversials, but did not kill anyone. The ships were boarded and the Juntus taken into custody for violating neutral space.

After weeks of living in close compartment aboard Liberty, it was a delight to have some space to breath on Destiny. Taking a shower was a sublime delight. After everyone had cleaned up, they reconvened in the conference room. Upon hearing of Lynn’s plans, Anna had promised to take Lynn home. This was the best news she had heard in months. When she got back, she had so much to tell Grammy, and hopefully some answers about her own heritage would be cleared up.

The minute Lynn stepped into the conference room, she knew something was wrong. Kyle’s jaw was stiff, and everyone sat in silence staring at him for answers. They looked shell shocked.

“What happened?” Lynn asked hastily taking a seat next to Kyle.

“Why do you want to know? You’re leaving,” Kyle sneered.

“Kyle. Tell her,” Lunu said sternly.

Kyle looked from Lunu to Lynn. For a moment she thought longing flitted over his eyes, but then it was gone. “King Eber and Queen Elanor are dead. Tristyn and Suzea are being framed for the murders.”

“No!” Lynn gasped, as tears sprang to her eyes, “That means…”

“Yes. Eldwa will be king. He’s already chosen a queen. Brigieta.” Kyle completed the words to cause Lynn’s worst nightmare.

“Saldiora is no longer safe if Brigieta can claim the throne for both herself and the Juntus,” Lynn muttered as different futures flashed in front of her. How could she leave if her friends were neither safe with or without her? The kingdom seemed to be circling the drain with the death of the King and Queen.

“Then we plan a course right away for Saldiora,” Kyle announced as he nodded towards Peter. “Lynn, a shuttle awaits your departure.” Everyone in the room held their breath as they watched what Lynn was going to do next.

“The morning after Tristyn displayed his heart, I woke with Velice by a particular waterfall outside the Royal Library,” Lynn started as she looked over at Kyle, knowing passing before his eyes. “Williamson had road with Robert into the night to find me at the help of Marvis’ direction,” Lynn paused and looked at everyone in the room. A year hadn’t passed since she had been taken to Saldiora but it felt like a lifetime had been spent getting to know these people. Even though she was numb, she couldn’t run now. “When I questioned why he had come looking for me, he didn’t give me a silly speech about needing to protect me. He simply said ‘we never leave anyone behind or in danger’.”

“So what say you?” Marvis spoke up before anyone could say a word.

“I’ll return to Saldiora and use everything in my power, even a deadly weapon if I absolutely must, to make sure the Juntus never hurt me or my friends again.” A cheer rang out in the conference room and even Kyle began to look pleased. When the room settled down and Peter moved to set course, Lynn spoke softly to no one in particular. “Then I can return home to my family.” No one protested as Lynn stood and returned to her quarters silently. Kyle had stood to follow her, but decided to remain behind and help plot their course back to Saldiora.

Chapter 35

Brigieta slipped into the silky black dress that stopped just above her knees. Her auburn hair hung in luscious curls around her face. The best thing about being the queen-to-be was that she no longer had to live by anyone else’s rules. She could make her own now. That meant the days of wearing her hair in a braid were gone.

A knock sounded on the door and Mimt entered with Voltaire short on his heels. “You look ravishing,” Mimt said.

“Prettier than ever,” Voltaire chimed in.

“Thank you, but if I wanted compliments I’ll ask my fiancé. Now tell me, was there any problems with the council?” Brigieta brushed her hair into place and put the small diamond circlet on her crown. It had been a betrothal gift from Eldwa. His thoughtfulness had caught her by surprise when he gave her the gift and gently kissed her on her lips.

“There was little resistance, but once Voltaire and I pointed out all the logical reasons for the declaration they came around and approved it,” Mimt said. He had originally been over looked as an ally. But Brigieta was no fool. Mimt went where they money went. He would back whoever and whatever would yield him the greatest profit. She trusted him little and so kept him close in her confidence and thus on a tight leash.

Voltaire on the other hand would do anything she asked without question, especially now that he was Lord von Neashop. Their grandfather Lauri had unfortunately died of an unknown cause in his sleep, the night after the King and Queen’s death. Dr. Mishtoc, the palace physician, had said his heart must have failed due to all the stress of the sad news. Brigieta and Voltaire were the only two who knew the truth. Voltaire had poisoned Lauri with Castosius. Today she thought he would have looked more excited having sat in on his first council and having walked away victorious. However, he looked pale and upset.

Brigieta patted Voltaire on the cheek, “Cheer up Voltaire, it’s all going according to plan.”

Voltaire took both her hands in his and drew and trembling breath. Truth be told, he was scaring her. “What’s wrong?” Brigieta asked.

Voltaire drew a deep breath and let it out. “Isa is dead.”

Brigieta stood shocked for only a moment. Then she struggled to hide the smile that was creeping up her lips. She pulled Voltaire in for a hug before he could suspect anything. This was the best news yet. Not only was she going to be Queen of Saldiora, but she was now the only heir to the Juntu fortune. She was now the most powerful woman and would command Juntu and Saldioran forces to do her combined bidding and rule the universe. All her dreams had come true. It had so been worth killing Zebetila all those months back, and putting herself through all the agonizing training. Now it was her time to rule.

She pulled away from Voltaire and placed a saddened experience on her face before she asked, “How did it happen?”

“I have not heard all the details but there was a revolt from the slaves. They killed all the guards and then killed your uncle. I’m so sorry.”

“What about Lord Kyle?” Mimt asked.

It was true that Brigieta had kept no secret from either of these men. The same could not be said of her fiancé or her father. She wondered why that was so, and mused it was probably because she could control these two like puppets. The other two were impossible to control, at the moment.

“He led the uprising, but there is no word on where he is. We believe he has escaped and is already heading back here. We will need to kill him before he has a chance to accuse me of abducting him,” Voltaire informed them.

“There is no one here who will listen to him Voltaire since we control the council now. But if it makes you feel better, we can kill him,” Brigieta acquiesced. It was a shame to have to kill Kyle, but it was the price to pay to keep her puppets happy.

“There is more,” Mimt said when it was clear that Voltaire had run out of information.

“Yes?” Brigieta prompted.

“I received this video feed this morning and is the reason I hurried over here,” Mimt said as he held out his notepad for Brigieta’s inspection.

She took it and watched the images and sound play out before her. The camera angle showed the family conference room, a viewpoint that was situated behind where Isa usually sat. The doors opened, and in pranced Lynn and Williamson.

Brigieta gasped. “This is impossible! She killed him?”

Mimt nodded at the notepad in answer. Brigieta’s eyes were now glued to it. Isa explained about how he had learned that the family heirlooms were in fact part of a key to a weapon here on Saldiora. Then there was a big flash as a beam flashed from a weapon directly at Lynn. For a time, there was nothing to be seen, only the sound of gun fire, then sword fighting, and finally Lynn stood up and screamed as Isa’s head rolled into the view of the camera.

Brigieta in a fit of anger slammed the notepad on the ground and stomped on it, cracking it to pieces. “I promise you if it’s the last thing I ever do, it will be to see Lynn dead. She has killed my two uncles. She’s probably going to come after me now that she knows my allegiance. Mimt, we must double the guard around here. Voltaire, you must find this weapon and destroy it.”

Mimt placed a reassuring hand on Brigieta’s shoulders. “Calm down, my Lady. You must remain patient. I promise nothing will happen to you.”

Brigieta drew in deep breath, attempting to tamper the anger that was boiling inside.

“No one can know of our plans. If they suspect you are anything but the perfect queen, you will lose the throne and all we’ve worked for will be gone,” Voltaire chastened.

Brigieta screamed.

Mimt shook his head at Voltaire, “Not helping.”

“No he’s right,” Brigieta said, trying to make sense of it all.

“He is?” Mimt questioned incredulous.

“Yes. I’ve won this round. Lynn will never be queen. I am queen. If all goes as have been promised, in one year I will be crowned. Then no one will be able to stop me. We just have to stick to our plan,” Brigieta explained. With each sentence her heart rate calmed down a notch.

Trumpets sounded from the palace gates, reminding them all why they stood there dressed in black. Brigieta was about to give the performance of her life, and she had to make the populace believe in her.

Eldwa strolled in, not bothering to knock, since he was now the heir and could go wherever it pleased him. “It’s time.”

Brigieta nodded, took Eldwa’s arm and left her compatriots waiting for her return. Eldwa led her down the hall without a word. He paused for a moment behind the curtain that led to the royal balcony.

“Are you all right?” Brigieta asked, not because she was concerned about his feelings, but because she did not want him to destroy her plans.

Eldwa patted her hand. “I’m fine. I was just remembering the first time I stood here.”

“Yes?” Brigieta asked, curious now.

“It was the day that Tristyn was named the royal heir. I was so naïve back then. I thought he and I would always be together and rule together. But as we grew older, he was raised to be a prince, and I was forgotten and left to do whatever pleased me. I vowed that I would learn all I could on my own, and from my teachers, and one day rule. And here I am.” Eldwa stared down into Brigieta’s eyes and then gave her a tender kiss. “With the most beautiful queen I could ever have imagined.”

The unexpected kiss had robbed her of her breathe, and she barely caught this last sentence. But then the words settled into her heart. It surprised her how much she was growing to love this man. She would do anything to keep him safe and clear of all the dirty secrets she kept.

“Come,” Eldwa spoke, sweeping the curtains aside and pulling her through out onto the balcony.

The plaza and beyond was filled with Saldiorans who cheered the moment they were spotted. All wore black in memory of King Eber and Queen Elanor. Some cried, but most were pleased that the kingdom would not be left leaderless. Others seemed angry and mad. Brigieta could only imagine that the anger was directed at Tristyn. Their plan had gone off well. Voltaire had stolen Tristyn’s signature weapon and used it to kill King Eber. At the same time, Brigieta had borrowed Suzea’s dagger and stabbed Queen Elanor with it. This all happened in the dead of night while all were asleep. The next morning the dead bodies and weapons were found, but when they went to arrest Tristyn and Suzea, they had both disappeared. Someone had tipped them off, and Brigieta had not been able to determine who the traitor was. She suspected it was the poodolian, Meelocks, that was supposed to issue the arrests, but she had no proof.

Eldwa waved his hands too quiet the crowd. “Dear friends, it is with heavy hearts that we gather here this eve to say farewell to our beloved king and queen, and celebrate the legacy that they have left behind for us to uphold and cherish. With great honor, I am pleased to announce that this afternoon the council approved my union with the beautiful Lady Brigieta von Neashop. According to precedence, we will be married on the morrow but will only be crowned one year from today. It is with humble hearts that we accept the responsibility that fate has dealt us, and we endeavor to serve you with as much grace and mercy as my parents showed you.” Eldwa turned to face Brigieta and nodded.

Brigieta stepped forward. “In honor of our wedding, the council has also approved an edict for each of us. First, as of tomorrow, schools will be opened to all children and will be free to attend. Second, to anyone who cannot afford a roof over their head or food for their table, work, lodging, and meals will be provided at the palace. We understand that there may be long lines, but we promise that we will tend to all your needs in due course.”

The crowd roared with approval. Brigieta smiled at their foolishness, but waved and pretended to put on a pleased face. What she had not told them was that as of tomorrow anyone found loitering on the streets, would be put to forced labor in the palace. The streets would be cleaned, and the palace would be fully staffed in a few weeks. Everything would be in its place, and there would be a place for everyone. She would rule this city with an iron hand if that is what it took to maintain order and decency.

Chapter 36

Lynn stared out of Liberty’s window and contemplated how her life seemed to be on a never ending roller coaster. She had given up all hope on having her own happy ever after. Life was messy, with too many turns to really plan for the future. She ignored talk of planning for tomorrow and instead made a conscious decision to focus on today.

Lynn shifted the backpack slung over her shoulders. It had been Kyle’s idea to use Liberty to get to Saldiora. It at least was not as recognizable as Destiny. They had stripped all they could from Destiny and crammed every nook of Liberty with gear that they may need. Lynn carried with her the vase, the Avioran crystal, her necklace, some clothing and Kyle’s lobble embroidered duvet. She had told no one about the fact that she had the keys to a powerful weapon, only that she would be willing to use one to defend Saldiora. She was not even sure the weapon would work, where it was, but most important whether she was even willing to use it to kill hundreds of Juntus. The last doubt is what caused her to keep her mouth shut. She wondered why she had not just gone home to Earth. Maybe it was because she did not want Brigieta to rule, or that her friends needed her. She stared at Kyle who held Lunu’s hand. Maybe it was because she loved a man she could never have.

“We’ll be landing in 10 minutes,” Marvis announced over the comm.

Lynn turned and stared out the window. Few words had been spoken between her and Kyle. She preferred it that way. Pushing all these doubts and fears aside she looked to see if she could spot the library. To her surprise, it would have been difficult to miss. People camped for miles around the little house that was the entrance to the library.

“How many do you think have come?” Lunu asked nervously.

“Not to worry, there will be enough to fight back. The communication I received from Tristyn said there was close to 10,000 men and 2,000 horses at last count,” Kyle informed them all. Ever since his return, Kyle had been bossier than ever and it grated on Lynn’s nerves. Most of the time she kept quiet and chose to ignore him. How had things gotten so bad between them?

Liberty sat down in a clearing. Raphael opened the cargo bay doors and everyone disembarked. A young soldier ran up to them and bowed. “Lord Kyle. Prince Tristyn awaits you in the library.”

“Have some men help to unload the ship and then show my crew where they can stay,” Kyle said.

“Yes sir. A tent has been set up for your use and those in your charge. I will direct them there. But if you will follow me. I will take you to the Prince.”

“I should stay,” Lunu said when Kyle told her to come with him.

“Nonsense. You are coming with us,” Kyle protested. “Right Lynn?”

Lynn shrugged and walked off towards the library. She no longer cared what Kyle and Lunu did. She would do her own thing. Find her own happiness.

As they neared the library, three horses approached them from the stables. Lynn ran full speed into Velice and gripped her friend in a fierce hug.

“You made it back alive. That is good,” Velice said snuggling with Lynn.

“Where’s my hug?” Robert teased.

Lynn laughed. It was good to laugh again. “You best go see Jael if you want any love, mister.”

“I am pleased to see ye faring well, Lord Kyle,” Brial said in his formal manner.

Kyle bowed to Brial “You too.”

“But you look like skin and bone,” Velice commented.

“We haven’t had time to fatten him up yet,” Lunu quipped.

Everyone laughed, but Lynn only smiled. Velice gave Lynn the look that said ‘out with it’.

“I promise I will tell you everything, later.” Lynn cut Velice off before she could ask any embarrassing questions.

“Lynn is right. We must go see Tristyn first. Then we’ll catch up,” Kyle agreed.

“Fair thee well but do stop by to see me,” Brial said as they turned and headed for the library door.

Inside the house, Kyle took charge and opened the secret passageway that led down to the top floor of the library. The library was still as Lynn had left it weeks ago, just as dusty, but there were definitely many moor footprints in the dust. They all seemed to head in the general direction of the sitting area that looked out over the river valley.

Lynn felt nervous at having to see Tristyn again. After how they had left things the last time between them, she was not sure if she wanted to face him. She had loved him for a short time, until he broke her heart by loving another after proposing to her. Although she had forgiven him, it was still going to be hard to face him. She fell to the back of the group and allowed Kyle to take the lead.

Sure enough, they found Tristyn and Suzea in the sitting area that had been converted to a command center. 50 or so soldiers milled about, shuffling papers, and working on computer terminals. Suzea was the first to spot them, and she tugged on Tristyn’s sleeve to get his attention. He looked up from where he was staring at a computer and saw them.

A broad smile appeared on Tristyn’s face as he raced towards them, pushing soldiers out of his way. “Kyle! You’re alive!” They collided in a fierce hug, and held on for a while.

“It is good to see you Tristyn,” Kyle said breaking away from the bear hug.

Tristyn’s gaze settled on Lunu, who he embraced next. “I’m so sorry to hear about Dloakar. You have my deepest sympathies.”

It pained her that they did not trust her enough to tell her the truth. She finally realized that no matter what she did, she would always be seen as the outsider. The Earthling.

Tristyn turned to Lynn, but she backed away from him before he could touch her. “Hello,” was all she could manage.

Tristyn’s eyes were filled with tears, pain and regret. “Thank you for rescuing Kyle.”

Lynn nodded.

Tristyn nodded at Suzea, who cleared her throat. “Lynn, I’m so happy to see you are well. I wanted to tell you how deeply sorry I am for what happened. I had no idea about what Tristyn had promised you. He and I have talked, and we’ve decided that you and he should still marry.”

Lynn coldly stared at them in disbelief. Even if they tried to deny it, she clearly saw the attraction that sparked between Tristyn and Suzea. “This planet has been governed successfully ever since my grandparents left. As I see it, the people are happy with the way things are going. Saldiora has an heir and that is Tristyn, and he has a future wife. Just because I am a lost heir does not mean I need to be queen. Thank you, but no.”

“No?” Kyle blurted out. “Lynn this is the only way for the Asciendum family to regain the throne.”

Lynn crossed her arms and glowered at all of them. “I will never marry because of duty. I do not love Tristyn,” she lied.

“But –” Tristyn tried to get a word in.

“I said no, and that is my final answer.”

A quiet unease hung in the air. No one knew what to say. Changing the subject, Lynn said “Tristyn, what happened to your parents and why is there an army camped outside the library.”

“Meelocks woke me in the middle of the night. He told me my parents had been murdered and that we, Suzea and I, were being framed for the murders. Apparently, someone had stolen my gun, and Suzea’s dagger and used it to murder my parents.” Here Tristyn choked up. Suzea reached out and squeezed his hand. He regained his composer and continued. “Meelocks helped us escape out of the city unseen with only a few possessions, one being Kyle’s sword Ferial,” Tristyn explained as near by a soldier handed Kyle his sword. Words could not clearly explain the joy Kyle immediately gained at seeing his family heirloom. “Meelocks quickly spread the word of what had happened. By the time we made it to the library, the first of the soldiers had already started to assemble. Then yesterday we learned that the council has named Eldwa the heir and Brigieta his queen-to-be. They will be crowned in one year, but in the meantime, they will rule with the council’s approval. They are to be wed tomorrow.”

“It is awful,” Suzea interjected, “they passed a proclamation that states that all children be taken from the parents and put in boarding schools, and that if no one can afford to live because of increased taxes to pay for these schools they will be provided for in the palace. All Brigieta wants is to keep the city clean, people off the streets, and enslaved to her whims in the palace.”

Tristyn picked up the tale, “Already several families have been forced into service at the palace, their children taken from them.”

“I do not understand how the council could allow this?” Kyle said flabbergasted.

“Lord Lauri von Neashop died, and Voltaire was appointed to the council. With Voltaire and apparently Mimt in allegiance with Eldwa and Brigieta, the council was swayed. Lord Parin did all he could, but there were just not enough voices who saw reason.”

“What are we going to do?” asked Lunu.

“As soon as the army has grown to its maximum capacity, we will storm the city and the palace and take it back,” Tristyn said.

“Surely there has to be another way. Many people will die if we do that,” Lunu objected.

Lynn was surprised at how freely Lunu was speaking, but then remembered how close Kyle and Tristyn were growing up and how Lunu must have grown up the same way. Another twist of the knife in her gut turned as Tristyn said, “I see no other way. What I don’t understand is who would do such a thing? Who would frame me for the death of my parents?’

“I know,” Lynn spoke up. All eyes turned to her. “It was Brigieta.”

“Not this again, Lynn. We’ve been over this a hundred times. We have no evidence that Brigieta is behind any of this.” Tristyn objected.

“No, she’s right,” Kyle said. “Tell him Lynn.”

“Brigieta is a Juntu. She is Pel Juntu’s daughter to be exact.”

“How do you know this?” Suzea asked.

“Because Isa von Juntu told me she was his niece, right before he was beheaded and Williamson died,” Lynn said. The room grew silent at the announcement of Williamson’s death. There were many soldiers in the room that respected Williamson for all that he had done and accomplished as a slave.

“I heard it from him as well, and confirmed it with my friends on the station,” Kyle added.

“Well, I’ll be,” Tristyn said, sitting back in his chair, flummoxed by the news.

“Kyle, tell me everything that happened,” Tristyn said.

“I suppose you should all know that it was Voltaire that kidnaped me,” Kyle sat back and relayed to them all that had happened to him. Lynn watched as the two couples relaxed in each other’s company.

After a few moments, Lynn politely excused herself and left. She meandered her way through the library, and made her way to what she considered to be her study. Her books and things were exactly as she had left them. In a way it felt to her as if she was home. Placing her pack gently on the floor, Lynn started looking up references on the Avioran crystal, but could find none. There were no records of it to be found anywhere. She had a nagging feeling that she had learned about the keys before in a book somewhere, and supposed it was in the King’s Lineage, the only book she did not have access to because it was on Earth.

A knock on the door sounded. Lynn took her nose out of her book long enough to see that it was Lunu who stood there. “Yes?” Lynn said turning her attention back to what she had been reading.

“They’re about to start the funeral service. Tristyn asked that I come find you and ask if you wish to attend,” Lunu said.

Lynn swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat. “Yes, I will be there momentarily.”

When Lunu did not leave, Lynn looked up again, “Was there something else?”

Lunu nervously stared at Lynn, and then shook her head before turning and running away. Lynn had hoped that Lunu would come clean with whatever secrets were being kept. Not feeling like reading anymore, Lynn bottled up her emotions and headed for the surface, swinging her pack over her shoulder.

Outside, a big funeral pyre had been erected. Everyone was starting to gather around. Marvis stood with his family, all holding on to each other with relief on their faces to finally be together again. Sir Doyle and Xoan stood with them, staring blankly at the funeral pile no doubt remembering Juke. Jael stood with Robert and the other horses, all looking stoic. Kyle, Lunu and Peter stood near the front of the congregating crowd. Tears streamed down Lunu’s face as Kyle held her in his arms.

Rael, Vior, Stix and Lamean walked up and stood protectively around Lynn. Lamean bowed to her. “Lady Lynn, in Williamson’s absence please allow us to keep our promise and remain as your guard. He made us swear loyalty to protect you until our dying breath and we will do so.”

Lynn had no energy to argue, so she just nodded her acquiescence.

“Look.” Rael pointed at the pyre with no bodies. Instead the pyres were covered with lobble flowers.

“Now what does that remind me off?” Vior asked.

“Zentrial’s office,” Stix said.

“What? Why?” Lynn asked, curious despite the somber feelings coursing through her.

“A painting hung over Zentrial’s office, it depicted this exact scene,” Rael explained.

“I believe it had Dechou’s signature in the right bottom corner and it read, The end of the beginning prophesy by Dechou,” Lamean commented.

So even here and with all this, Lynn could not escape the prophecies. It seemed that no matter what she did, she had no choice in the matter on the path that had been set before her. What did the end of the beginning even mean? She had long given up trying to decipher Dechou’s mysteries. Instead, she wondered about whom she would lose next.

Tristyn held Suzea’s hand and was getting ready to give a speech. Suzea waved Lynn over. Lynn walked up and took her place between Tristyn and Kyle, her guard standing a few paces back. Although she was not pleased with it, she was technically a council member and understood the importance of showing the crowd a united front between their three houses: Feol, Talion and Astrium.

Tristyn stepped up onto a box and the crowd hushed. “There are no words I can say that will make the feeling of loss go away. We have all lost those who we love to the Juntus and their treachery continues. Today I learned that Brigieta is heir to the Juntu family.” Shouts of outrage and shock rippled through the crowd. “Please, listen. There is no doubt in my mind that they have orchestrated all of this, and murdered my parents. So, tonight we will mourn those who we have lost, and tomorrow we will fight to regain our homes.” A battle cheer at the imminent announcement of war, roared through the night air.

“Tonight we honor a noble young warrior, who pledged his life to protect another, Sir Delmi von Astrium.”

Tears welled up in Lynn’s eyes as one fire arrow sailed through the sky and embedded into the funeral pyre. She shifted the pack on her shoulders, feeling the keys burn into her back at the price that they had cost her.

“We honor one of my dearest friends from childhood, a bright scientist and an expert in the kitchen, Sir Dloakar von Eshod.”

Lunu turned and cried into Kyle’s shoulder as another fire arrow was shot.

“But most of all, we honor King Eber and Queen Elanor, who only ever wanted to serve their people and keep them from harm.” The crowd roared their outrage. Tristyn gripped Suzea’s hand as she wiped a tear from his cheek.

“We honor all of those who have fallen to protect our people,” Tristyn said as a rain of fire arrows descended onto the funeral pyre.

Lynn stared into the flames as they danced up into the night sky. Death was final to these people, but Lynn knew in her heart that there must be something more. She just did not know what.

The crowd dispersed. One by one, Lynn’s friends turned away and went to be with their families and loved ones. Kyle and Peter led Lunu away to some tents that stood not far from the library entrance. Lynn turned to leave, but Tristyn stepped in front of her path.

“Please have dinner with us,” Tristyn asked hopeful.

Lynn looked at Suzea, “Please, we want to catch up. It’s been so long since we’ve been able to talk. I’ve missed you.”

Lynn acquiesced and followed them into the library. The funeral pyre behind them casting eerie shadows before them as they went back into the depths of the library.

Chapter 37

Lynn plopped down on the chair facing the floor to ceiling windows and stared at the moon shining through the canopy of trees. Her emotions were spent, and she was too tired to even care about eating. Tristyn and Suzea sank down next to each other on the couch, looking as bad as she felt. Lynn closed her eyes, hoping for some peace and quiet between them. But sooner than Lynn would have liked, Suzea organized some food for them and got them to sit by the table and eat. The soup was nice and warm against the cool night air.

Lynn did not know how to console Tristyn, who sat frozen staring out the windows. “Your parents were kind people, Tristyn. Queen Elanor always gave me a hard time in class, but she surprised me the day of the Leyente duels when she said she would love me as a daughter. Her love for you ran deep, and she wanted to make sure you married someone who would be your equal and who would love you as deeply as your parents loved each other,” Lynn smiled at Suzea. “And I think you have found her. The two of you were always meant for each other. I should have realized it sooner.”

“Then you forgive me?” Suzea asked.

Lynn squeezed Suzea’s hand. “The best beauty won.”

“But I made you a promise. I am a man who keeps my promises, Lynn,” Tristyn said stubbornly.

“Tristyn, what you and I had together was special, but we were always meant to be nothing more than friends. I am glad that you have found love. I hope to find love myself one day, and so will not marry out of obligation. Now, please, no more talk of marrying me.”

Suzea placed a reassuring hand on Tristyn’s arm. “What she says is true. You cannot force her to marry you.”

Tristyn sulked. “I suppose you are right, but that does not mean I have to like it, and it doesn’t mean that I don’t love you. In fact, I do love you, more than you will ever know. It’s just -”

A door slammed, and running footsteps echoed through the library. “What now?” Tristyn said, rising in agitation.

An older gentleman rushed into the room and fell to his knees before Lynn. The guards ran up and tried to pull the man up.

“What is this?” Tristyn asked.

“This man broke through our security, my Lord. We are sorry, we will get rid of him,” A soldier said tugging on the man.

“Wait a moment,” Lynn said, coming to the man’s rescue. “Sir, what is so important that you had to break in to speak with us?”

“I have important news that only you may hear,” the man said.

Tristyn waved the guards away. “Please rise,” Tristyn ordered.

The man made no attempt to move.

“Sir, there is no need for you to remain on your knees. Please have a seat with us,” Tristyn offered, trying to remain patient.

“I am sorry, but I will not obey your order,” the man said.

Tristyn quirked an eyebrow. “Then whose order will you obey?”

“Only they royal heir.”

“I am the royal heir. You may rise,” Tristyn commanded, his temper slowly rising.

“You are not,” The man clipped out.

Tristyn’s nostrils flared, “Then who is? I suppose you serve my whittles brother, Eldwa.”

The man raised his head and stared at Lynn. Her stomach felt as if it had dropped out. She recognized this man, but from where? Instantly everyone in the room understood. Tristyn waved a hand at Lynn.

“Please kind sir, have a seat with us,” Lynn said, helping the man to his feet. As he rose, Lynn could almost recognize his face, it was right there on the edge of her consciousness. “Have we met before?” she asked, a knowing feeling nagging in the back of her mind. He looked familiar, but she could not explain why.

“Thank you for your kindness,” the man said as he sat. He once again stared nervously at Tristyn and Suzea, “Yes we have met, and you knew me well as a child. Please, what I have to say is for you alone.”

Lynn considered his request, but after having just reconciled with her friends, there was no need to show them away. It would have been too great of an insult to do so. “They are my friends. You may say and speak to them as you would to me. Now, please, what is your name?”

A smile climbed up the old man’s lips. “My name is Dechou.”

“Impossible!” Tristyn said, “Dechou has been dead for centuries.”

Dechou laughed. “No young sir. True I am one of the oldest who grew up with Gabriella and Pablo, but I am not ancient.”

“You knew my grandparents?” Lynn asked awed.

“Indeed, I did, or I should say I do.”

“What do you mean?”

“The message I carry for you are from your grandparents.”

“How is that possible?”

“They knew this day would come. Whenever I visited them on Earth during your summer vacations to check up on you, they would always make sure I would keep my promise to deliver the message. So, I went into hiding when it became too difficult to travel to Earth. I have been keeping this message for many years.”

Lynn took in short breaths. “I remember you now, kind of. Please tell me the message.”

Dechou stared at the others again, and then proceeded. “I am to show you the way to the future, and instruct you on what to do with it, in order to save you and Saldiora. This is the only path that will lead to success. All others will fail, resulting in the deaths of those you hold dear, and even your own death.”

Lynn shook her head. “How do you know all of this?”

“Lynn, he’s a prophet, of course he’ll know. It’s all written in the book A Royal Return,” Tristyn reminded her. “I’ve read it a thousand times and still cannot make sense of it.”

“It is not for you to make sense of,” Dechou said mysteriously.

“Then who is it for?” Suzea asked.

Dechou reached in his pocket and took out a King’s Lineage and placed it in Lynn’s lap. “The answers you so desperately seek are in there, if you know where to look.”

Lynn saw there was a book marker, and flipped to its page. She stared at the familiar text that explained how a weapon of unknown power could be used for good or evil, depending on who wielded it. The directions to the weapon was embroidered on duvets, and the door to the weapon was opened with a pendant and vase. A special crystal was needed in order to power the weapon. Once activated, only one worthy could sit in the chair, one of royal blood. In the darkest history of Saldiora, it would fall to the lost royal heir to venture to the weapon and use it. Lynn snapped the book shut, and held the bridge of her nose with two fingers. She knew all this already, but she could not bring herself to accept the reality, or even to tell Tristyn what she had learned. “You cannot possibly believe this is about me.”

“I do, Lynn,” Dechou said touching the pendant at her neck. “Gabriella said you would be hesitant. She told me to tell you, Piapish Mishtum.”

Lynn gulped down tears. “You spoke to Grammy?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Through a long range communicator back at my home.”

“What does it mean Lynn?” Tristyn asked.

Piapish Mishtum means to Seize Life. It’s a reminder to me to not run away from my responsibility, but to do the tasks that have been given to me to do.”

“What is this weapon?” Tristyn asked.

“I cannot tell you,” Dechou said.

“Why not?” Tristyn demanded.

“Because I am not permitted to.”

“Can you tell me?” Lynn asked.

“No. Your great grandfather made me promise to never tell a single soul about what it can do.”

“Even if it means saving everything we hold dear.”

“Especially then.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Lynn this is your destiny. Only you can decide where to go and what to do.”

“Where is the weapon?”

“It is deep within the forest.”

“You can’t go into Greenstin Forest. No one has ever survived,” Suzea protested.

Dechou laughed. “That is a story we have told people for centuries to keep them away from the weapon. I have just come from the forest. Now, it is no safe place by any means, but I can lead the way for you.”

“If Lynn goes, we are all going. It will take us 5 days to mount up the army and be ready to move out,” Tristyn decided.

“No. That big of a force would draw too much attention. We can only take a handful of people,” Dechou argued. “I would recommend you disperse the army. Let them all go home to their wives and children. You and Lady Suzea will be safe in the forest. I promise.”

“But we have the upper hand. If we attack tomorrow, we will over run the palace and take back the throne,” Tristyn contended.

“If you did go down that path, you would take back the throne, but at great cost. Thousands will lose their lives. Innocent children and mothers will be killed. Saldiora will never be the same with that much blood shed on your hands Tristyn,” Dechou stated.

“You cannot know that for sure,” Tristyn urged.

“I wish that that was true.”

“I have heard enough. I will come with you, but let me make this clear to everyone. This does not mean that I will use the weapon. Is that understood?” Lynn asked.

“Why come then?” Dechou probed, intrigued.

“Because we have nowhere else to go,” Lynn said.

“Yes we do. We will go back to the palace,” Tristyn said, starting to sound like a broken record.

“No we will not. You will do as Dechou has said,” Lynn demanded.

“Why would I do that?” Tristyn asked, rising and facing off with Lynn.

“Tristyn you got to see the people of the city when you were with me. Would you not do what is in their best interest? Or are you as selfish as you’re making yourself out to be, and only want to have the power and be back in your cozy apartment?”

“I… I…” Tristyn stammered.

“It is the right thing to do,” Lynn said, crossing her arms.

Tristyn sat down, all the fight gone out of him. “I will make the announcement in the morning.”

“No. We must leave tonight, and no one can know that we’re going into the forest,” Lynn decided.

“Why not?” Suzea asked.

“Because they will try to follow us, regardless of what Tristyn says. We will only take those with us who we can fully trust. We will leave the rest a letter to be read in the morning,” Lynn reasoned.

“Then it is settle. We leave as soon as everything is arranged,” Dechou agreed.

Just then, a door slammed, and more footsteps echoed through the halls.

Kyle burst into the living room, panting. He stood up tall and stared at Dechou. “Hello Father.”
