Chapter 11

It takes only twenty minutes to get back to the cabin and I see Greg and Matt screaming at each other in front of Matt’s cabin as soon as we clear the trees. I park the car and rush out, stopping at Matt’s side while turning to face the specter of my past that refuses to leave.

“Izzy, I need to talk to you.” Greg pleads with me as Seth jumps out of his car and rushes to my side.

“The fuck you do! You need to fucking leave!” Matt shouts at him. I place my hand on Matt’s heaving chest and use my other hand to place on his cheek and pull his face until his eyes meet mine.

“It’s ok, I can handle this.” Matt pulls himself free from my touch, his frustration and anger are undeniable as he takes a few small steps back.

“Greg, there’s nothing left to talk about. You need to fucking leave. Leave here and leave me alone.” My voice is calm, but firm, the complete opposite of the absolute chaos inside me.

“I’ll leave after you hear what I need to say.” I fold my arms across my chest and give him a sharp glare.

“Fine. Say what you need to say and then leave.” His eyes dart from me to Seth and then to Matt before finally returning to me again.

“Can we talk alone?” I shake my head as I try to keep my anger in check.

“No. You can either say it right now, or you can fucking leave right now.” He lets out a heavy sigh, clearly realizing I won’t be caving. This is a side of me he’s never met, a side that came to life after facing his lies and deceit.

“Izzy, I love you and I know I fucked up, but I want to work this out. We deserve to give us another chance.” I don’t even bother to hold back my laughter at this point. It takes a moment to regain my composure so I can speak.

“Greg, there is no we…no us. You don’t deserve a fucking thing from me. I’ve moved on, but to be fair, you moved on four years ago, so this whole thing with you showing up and professing your love is really pathetic. I deserve someone who will treat me with respect, be faithful to me and love me for my flaws as well as my strengths. Those are things you’re completely incapable of. You wanted a woman who was willing to change to be whatever you wanted her to be while accepting the fact that you had to put your dick in any woman who was willing. That isn’t me. I refuse to be that woman.” His eyes are pleading with me and my blood is beginning to boil.

“Izzy, please give me a chance to show you I’ve changed. Losing you has taken a toll on me and I know how wrong I was for treating you the way I did.” I take a step back, right into the firm chest of Seth who’s standing much closer than I realized. While the move seems to make Greg angry, it has my body instantly calming.

“I doubt you’re capable of change, but even if you did manage to become a better person, Greg…it’s too little, too late.” Seth wraps his arms tightly around my waist, covering my arms with his and bringing me a intense sense of calm as my skin tingles from the contact with his.

“So, you’re giving up on us to fuck him?!” He points his shaking hand at Seth, looking like he’s seconds away from completely losing it.

“I fail to see how it’s any of your business. I can fuck whoever the fuck I want. At least I had the decency to wait until our relationship ended to do it.” Seth laces our fingers together and I just know he’s giving Greg a wicked smirk.

“I hope you fucking burn in hell you fucking whore! You’ll regret this, Izzy! When he realizes how fucking worthless and weak you are, he’ll drop you like a bad habit and then who are you going to run to?” Greg shouts before storming to his car, fishtailing as he tears out of the driveway and down the dirt road. I feel my body relax slightly as his car disappears from my sight.

“Matt…I’m so fucking sorry. I don’t know how he knew I was here.” Seth removes his arms from me and Matt pulls me into his chest.

“It’s not your fault, Izzy. Are you ok?” I nod and let out a sigh of relief, thankful that I actually am okay.

“Surprisingly, I really am.” As Matt pulls away I notice him giving Seth a strange look.

“Is there something you two would like to tell me?” I tilt my head and turn to look at Seth who almost looks as confused as I feel.

“Like what?” I finally ask and Matts eyes dart to meet mine.

“Are you guys together?” I smile and shake my head, trying not to show how much that question is affecting me. It shouldn’t be affecting me because the thought of us ‘being together’ shouldn’t even be something I would consider, but it is.

“No, Matt. Seth has helped chase Greg off a few times, but we’re not a couple.” Matt looks completely unconvinced, but even with the way my body is reacting, there’s no way I can be the cliche woman who dates her boss…I just can’t.

“You should go check in with Casey. She freaked out when you hung up on her.” I jump up and kiss his cheek then run into the cabin to find Casey. As I expected, I find her in the kitchen kneading and violently pounding dough.

“Hey.” I call out to her from the entry to the kitchen and she drops the dough on the counter then runs over to me, pulling me into a bone shattering hug.

“Is he gone?” I nod against her shoulder and she finally lets go of me.

“Why was he here?” I roll my eyes then lean against the counter, still unable to believe that prick showed up here of all places.

“To ask forgiveness.” A look of shock grips her delicate features and her eyes widen almost comically.

“Please say you didn’t give it to him.” I laugh and shake my head, glad I can give her an answer that will ease her worry.

“Hell no. He’s convinced I’m fucking Seth, so I used that to my advantage a little to encourage him to leave.” Her eyes are impossibly wide and her mouth is hanging open slightly.

“Are you?!” Why does everyone think I’m sleeping with my boss?!

“NO!” I shout my response much louder than intended.

“Well, you should be. I’ve seen how he acts around you. Every time you speak, you have his undivided attention and the way he looks at you is enough to make me weak in the knees.” I roll my eyes at her and walk to the fridge to get a bottle of water, more to hide the slight blush I know I’m sporting.

“I just got out of a shit relationship, Casey. I’m not ready to jump into a new one.” She gives me a disappointed look, but she has to know it’s not something I should even consider yet. It would be too soon for me to think about getting into another relationship…right?

“I get it, but if something good walks into your life, you shouldn’t let it go just because of what Greg put you through. You deserve happiness, Izzy.” I pull her in for a hug, hoping like hell that she knows how much I appreciate her.

“I’m working on being happy, Casey. I promise.” She squeezes me tightly then pulls away.

“I hope so. Why don’t you go for a walk in the orchard and wind down a bit.” I smile and nod then exit the kitchen and head outside. When I walk out the door I notice that Matt and Seth have moved and are now standing by Seth’s car and it looks like they’re having a pretty intense conversation, so I turn right and follow the driveway until I reach the opening in the fence that leads to the large orchard. I follow the path between the rows of trees and allow my thoughts to pull me in.

Could Seth really be interested in someone like me? I couldn’t even be enough to keep Greg happy and he isn’t half the man that Seth is. I’m sure his affection around Greg is purely for the purpose of driving Greg away…how could it be anything more? We barely know each other, not to mention he’s my boss. This poor man has seen what a mess my life is. Maybe he feels sorry for me. Fuck, I don’t need, or want him to feel sorry for me! Why can’t Greg just let me go? He didn’t want me when we were together, but now I can’t get rid of him.

God, why did he have to choose me? He could’ve had anyone he wanted, yet six years ago, he chose me. What would my life look like if I hadn’t agreed to go on that date with him all those years ago? Would I be happier? Would I have returned home after school? Would I have been able to save my mother? I stop walking and turn, resting my back against a tree as my thoughts begin to take a dangerous turn. I can’t change what’s already happened. I repeat this in my head over and over while I slump against the tree and take several deep breaths.

Chapter 12

“Izzy? Are you feeling alright?” Matt’s voice shatters the deafening silence around me, not that I could appreciate it anyway with all the noise in my own head. Wait…how the hell? Where did he come from? Was I really so lost in my thoughts that I didn’t hear him approaching?

“Yeah. Just thinking.” He walks over and places his back against the tree next to me, looking far too casual to be standing by me when I’m internally spiraling.

“That can be dangerous.” I give a weak smile and lower my head before he can see just how right he is.

“Yeah, it certainly can.” He pulls a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket, places one between his lips and lights it before pulling a long drag.

“Thinking about him?” I shrug and watch as a cloud of smoke fills the air between us.

“Amongst other things. Does Casey know you still smoke?” He gives me a playful smirk and takes another drag.

“I’m pretty sure she does, but as long as I don’t smoke near the house, she doesn’t say anything. So, what has your mind so frazzled?” Matt has always had a way of reading my expression better than anyone else could, even my mother. There were many times where I appreciated that fact, but right now…not so much.

“I was thinking about how different things would be if I hadn’t met Greg. I can’t help but wonder how many things would be better, or maybe some things wouldn’t have happened.” He uses the bottom of his shoe to put out his cigarette and stuffs the butt in his pocket.

“Wondering if your mom would still be here.” I nod as he speaks the words that I can’t.

“Yeah. I know it’s useless to dwell on ‘what ifs’, but it doesn’t stop them from sneaking their way in.” He takes a few steps toward me and pulls me to his chest.

“I know, Izzy. You know your mom would be so proud of the person you’ve become. Even more so now that you got rid of Greg.” We both chuckle at his comment as he releases me and looks at me with his famous loving, brotherly smile.

“Yeah, she never did like him, did she?” Matt throws his head back and laughs loudly, the sound is comforting and eases some of my tension.

“No one did. We only put up with him because of you.” There’s a lengthy silence before he speaks again. “So, what’s the deal with you and Seth?”

“Why does everyone think I’m fucking Seth?!” I practically shout at him as I throw my arms in the air in frustration.

“I never said anything about you two fucking. I just see how you are together and, Izzy…you seem happy. Even if you two aren’t together, it’s good to see that you have someone around who makes you smile.” I think about his words carefully and I can’t deny that he’s right. I do enjoy Seth’s company. He makes me feel comfortable and he makes me feel safe.

“He’s a good guy, Matt. He’s been really fucking nice to me and I don’t know…I just haven’t had anyone treat me like that except for you and Casey.” I see the sadness in his eyes and have to look away. I hate when people look at me like that.

“You’re worthy of so much more than what Greg gave you. I want you to be happy, Izzy.” He pulls me in for another hug and I know he’s going to let the conversation end here, give me time to soak everything in.

“Thanks, Matt.” He pulls back and gives me a warm smile.

“How about we head back and you can taste test the new Sangria I made.” I wrap my arm in his as he leads us back to the cabin for an afternoon of wine tasting. When we get back, Matt has me sit on the deck outside near the firepit and rushes in to get me a glass of his Sangria. When I hear the door open I smile as a glass of wine is lowered in front of my face.

“Thank you.” I take a small sip and let the flavors dance across my taste buds and it’s absolutely divine.

“So?” Matt sits down in the chair across from me as I let out a satisfied hum.

“It’s perfect.” I notice the sound of more movement behind me as Seth and Kris join us on the deck, Seth choosing to sit in the chair beside me on my left and Kris to the left of Seth.

“Do you think it’ll sell?” I give him a huge smile and nod as I take a large drink.

“It sure will. I’ll buy every damn bottle of it myself if it comes down to it.” Everyone laughs at my enthusiasm, but I mean it. This is the best wine I’ve ever had.

“I’m really glad you came up, Izzy.” I smile at Matt and lay my head against the back of my chair, finally feeling relaxed as the stress from earlier seems to just melt away.

“Me too.” Everyone sits and quietly sips their wine…except me. I finish my glass and stand up then walk back into the house to get more and check on Casey. I find her in the kitchen working on dinner and I can’t help but watch her. She’s such an amazing woman and she always goes above and beyond to take care of the people here. She turns when she hears me set my glass down and gives me an ear-to-ear grin.

“He had you try the new Sangria, didn’t he?” I nod with a huge smile plastered to my face.

“I’m willing to bet that you played a big part in perfecting it.” She only smiles in response.

“I won’t tell him that. You want to help out in here? I’m sure that the testosterone out there is stifling.” We both laugh as I nod enthusiastically.

“Just a little. What are we making?” She walks me through tonight’s dinner, prime rib with mashed potatoes and bacon wrapped asparagus. I throw on an apron and waste no time helping her get the potatoes peeled and boiled while she wraps the asparagus and throws it in the oven. We finish the meal just before five, timed to perfection as always. She sends her text to let everyone know dinner is ready and we begin plating everything and setting the table. She pours everyone a glass of white wine, but not me… I get another glass of Sangria. Everyone sits down and dives into their meal with the room filling with appreciative hums and moans. Kris and I are the first people done eating and I sit back in my chair, sipping my wine while I enjoy watching how much everyone is enjoying the food on their plates. I can see why Casey loves this so much.

“So, Issalia, would you be willing to help with a delivery tomorrow?” Kris’s voice booms out from beside Seth.

“Sure. Where am I going?” He gives me a warm smile.

“Edinbrook. You ever been there?” I think for a moment before responding.

“A few times as a kid, I think.” His brows raise and he gets a mischievous look.

“We can have Seth go with you. He’s been there quiet a few times. He can show you around while you’re there.” I fight the urge to roll my eyes. Is everyone in on this shit?

“If she doesn’t want to go, I can do it.” I see the glare Matt gives Seth and this time I can’t stop my eyes from rolling.

“Just take her with you, dude. If she’s going to come around more, we could use the help with deliveries and shit.” The agitation in Kris’s voice comes through clearly.

“It’s fine Seth, I’ll go with you.” I can feel the tension around the table ease instantly.

“You don’t have to, Izzy.” I hear shuffling followed by a loud thud. “Ouch!” I have to bite back my laughter when I look over to find Seth glaring at Kris who’s giving him a pointed glare.

“Don’t be a dick! She said she’ll go!” He whisper yells through gritted teeth, but everyone at the table hears him clearly.

“I’m going to head out to the orchard for an evening stroll before I head to bed. See you guys in the morning.” I give everyone a suspicious glare before leaving the table and rushing out the door with my glass of wine. I reach the orchard and draw several deep, calming breaths and let the fresh country air sooth my nerves before walking down the path between the trees.

The sun is just setting in the horizon and the sky shifts and melts into a beautiful ocean of pink, orange and yellow hues. I continue walking and sipping my wine until I reach the end of the orchard where I turn to head back to the cabin. I walk up to the porch in front of my cabin and pause when I hear loud laughter and can see the glowing light of the fire pit. I find myself thinking about how much I would love to have this be my life. Living this far from the busy city and to be only minutes away from nature would be so amazing. I walk into my cabin and head straight to my room, kicking off my shoes and decide to just sleep in my dress. I curl up in the soft bed and drift into darkness.

Chapter 13

The thundering sound of someone knocking on the door of my cabin tears me from my peaceful slumber. I stumble to the door and rip it open to find Seth standing with a smile on his face and a cup of coffee in his hand.

“I see you finally managed to sleep in.” He hands me the cup of coffee and I look out at the bright sky.

“What time is it?” He chuckles then leans against the door frame with a look of sheer amusement on his handsome face that my caffeine deprived ass is still too tired to properly appreciate.

“Almost eight.” I smack my hand against my face and slowly slide it down to my neck, shocked that I managed to sleep in for the first time in longer than I can remember.

“I’m so sorry I overslept. Give me fifteen minutes and I’ll be ready to go, I promise.” I turn and head back to my room without closing the front door. I throw on a pair of black skinny jeans and a White lace bra with a white short sleeve shirt that hugs my chest tightly then I brush the knots out of my hair and pull it into a ponytail, but decide to forego makeup to save time. I slip on my black ballet style flats then head back out to the living room where Seth is standing with his eyes fixed to his phone. I finish my coffee and walk into the kitchen to place the cup in the sink then turn to find him staring at me, his heart melting smile, thankfully, still present and accounted for.

“You ready?” I nod then give him a soft smile as I walk out of the kitchen and out the front door, stopping at the edge of the porch as I hear the door close behind me.

“Which car are we taking?” He grabs my hand, giving me a healthy dose of toe curling tingles, and pulls me to the front of the main cabin where there’s a large Black dodge pickup truck parked with a few crates in the back.

“Perks of running errands for Matt, we get to use the company truck.” He chuckles as he opens the passenger door for me. Once I’m seated, he closes the door and heads to the driver’s side, climbs in then takes off out of the driveway and down the dirt road.

“So, is it just me or is everyone acting really fucking weird back there?” I finally break our silence.

“It’s not just you. They think they’re being sly.” I can see the smile on his face and it’s extremely contagious…and pretty damn gorgeous.

“How so?” He glances over at me with a look that suggests he knows I know the answer already and I guess I do, even if I’m not ready to acknowledge it just yet.

“You know they’re trying to set us up, Izzy. It’s not like they’re being very discreet about it.” I direct my gaze out the side window, trying to hide that damn blush that brightens and heats my cheeks.

“I think Matt’s just afraid I’ll end up getting back together with Greg. Maybe he thinks that setting me up with someone he trusts will remove the chances of me doing something stupid.” I watch as we turn onto the main highway and I’m grateful when the road smooths out.

“Will you?” I scoff and give him an angry glare.

“I’m a lot of things, but I’m not stupid. I’m not willing to sacrifice my happiness for anyone ever again, least of all someone like Greg.” I see the satisfied look that washes over him and a soft smile pulls at my lips.

“Good. You should never sacrifice anything of yourself to please someone else. You’re stronger than that and you definitely deserve better. You deserve someone who will see you for all that you are, both the good and the bad, and accept it all.” I raise a brow and smirk at him.

“You seem awfully sure of that, but you hardly know anything about me.” His smile widens and he lets out a soft sigh.

“You can tell a lot about a person by just watching them. At work I’ve watched you show kindness and understanding, but have seen you clearly set your boundaries, like with the woman at the interview. Outside of work I’ve watched you assert yourself and shut down a negative influence in your life and I watched you face something that had been a great source of pain and suffering in your life. You’re stronger than you realize, Izzy.” I turn my gaze back to the scenery as his words slowly sink in, leaving me with the realization that my boss may be much more observant than I gave him credit for.

The rest of our drive is quiet, but not necessarily uncomfortable. I marvel at the small town of Edinbrook as we slowly drive through its outskirts. It’s like taking a step back in time with all the houses looking like something out of a movie from the 1950’s. We pull up in front of a small, but quaint store where Seth parks the truck and we both climb out.

“We just need to let them know we’re here and they’ll do all the work of unloading the product.” I nod and follow him into the store where we’re greeted by an old woman with gray hair, big brown eyes and a heartwarming smile.

“Good morning! You must be here with the delivery from Garett’s!” Her voice is as heartwarming as her appearance and I can’t help but smile when I look at her.

“Yes, we are! Would you like help offloading the crates?” Seth offers with an ear-to-ear grin that damn near has the old woman swooning.

“Oh no, we have a few strapping boys in back that can get it.” She walks into a hall behind the counter and returns a few minutes later with two muscular young men and a gorgeous young woman, seemingly in her mid-twenties, following behind her.

“Isaac and Caleb will unload the crates for you. If one of you wants to follow them out, the other can sign the delivery invoice!” I quickly volunteer to help monitor the offloading of the truck to avoid the chance of screwing up the invoice. I watch as the two good looking men unload the crates and I could be mistaken, but I feel like the blonde one, Caleb I think, is being flirty.

Once they have the last crate out of the back of the truck, I close the tailgate and head back in where I see Seth talking with the old woman while the younger woman is desperately trying to get his attention. I start scanning the different wine on the shelves when I hear someone clear their throat behind me. I turn around and nearly collide with Caleb’s chest.

“Shit, I’m so sorry!” The words fly out in a flurry as I smack my hand to my chest in a sad attempt to steady my racing heart.

“It’s fine, really. Do you live around here?” I give my best friendly smile and shake my head.

“No. I live in Crescent City. I am helping out at my cousin’s vineyard for the weekend.” He gives me a smile that I’m pretty sure is supposed to be sexy, or maybe charming, but it reminds me instantly of Greg in the worst way.

“Well, if you’d like someone to show you around, I get off at four.” I feel my stomach twisting and when I hear Seth’s voice I feel instant relief.

“Sorry, but she has a date tonight.” I turn and look at him with silent appreciation.

“Oh, I didn’t realize you two were a couple.” I’m about to speak when Seth walks over and places an arm around my shoulders.

“We are, but I get how hard it is to resist the urge to pick up on someone so beautiful.” I see the look of disappointment on Caleb’s face, but he forces a smile anyway.

“You’re a lucky man.” Seth squeezes my shoulders gently and I look up to see him smiling proudly.

“Yes, yes I am.” Seth guides me out of the store and I catch the angry glare of the young woman at the counter as we exit. We climb into the truck and he starts it, but then sits there quietly for a moment before finally snapping out of whatever weird trance he fell into.

“You want to get lunch before we head back?” I smile and nod, trying to pretend I didn’t notice the slight edge to his tone.

“Yeah, that would be great.” He smiles, but something seems off about it. He pulls out of the parking lot and drives further into town where he stops at a small diner. We both climb out and walk inside with him holding the door open for me to enter. A waitress seats us at a table in the back corner next to a window that overlooks a small park, but I can’t even enjoy it when I damn well know something’s bothering Seth, even though I have no damn clue what it could be.

“Can I get ya’ll something to drink?” The waitress is Attractive and looks like a young Brittney Murphy with a southern accent.

“I would like a lemonade, please.” My voice is soft and my attention is focused on my menu.

“Just a water for me.” She scampers off to get our drinks and the air around us fills with tension and it’s quickly starting to get to me.

Chapter 14

The waitress returns with our drinks and is paying extra attention to Seth which is mildly entertaining for me, especially with him seemingly oblivious to the whole thing. This woman has flashed him what I assume is her best smile, returned to our table with two extra buttons undone and even directs all her attention to him when she speaks, yet he doesn’t seem to notice a damn thing!

“Are ya’ll ready to order?” I set my menu down and nod with a smile on my face.

“I’d like the chicken strips with a side of ranch.” She writes down my order and then turns to Seth with a perfect ‘fuck me’ smile on her face that is almost the final straw that breaks my composure…almost.

“Make that two.” She writes it down then leans much farther than necessary to grab his menu, her full breasts practically right in front of Seth’s face and it takes all my will power to not laugh, but he doesn’t even spare her a glance. She walks away looking defeated and Seth goes back to focusing on anything but me and I’ve finally had it with whatever this is.

“Seth, is something wrong?” He’s quiet for a moment then finally releases an agitated sigh that has the tension in his shoulders easing slightly.

“It’s nothing you did. I’m sorry if I’m being a dick, Izzy.” I laugh and shake my head at him, finding it far too amusing that my boss just referred to himself as a dick. Seth is many things, but that certainly isn’t one of them.

“You aren’t being a dick, Seth. You’re just acting a little…off.” He gives me a nervous smile and sits back in his chair. His sudden shift in mood has be feeling both curious and worried.

“No need to sugar coat it. I’m acting like a dick and we both know it. I’m sorry.” We both chuckle and I take a sip of my lemonade that’s extremely sweet, like a big cup of diabetes with a hint of lemon. It’s more like sugar water with a splash of artificial flavoring that may or may not be lemon!

“So, what’s bothering you, Seth?” He runs a hand over his face then gives me an awkward expression that I can’t quite read, but it certainly has my heart pounding violently in my chest.

“Just something about how uncomfortable that guy made you back at the store. It kind of pissed me off.” I sit back as the shock of his declaration hits me. I didn’t know what to expect his explanation to be, but that certainly wasn’t it!

“It’s not a big deal, Seth, it was just a bit…much, that’s all.” I fumble with the hem of my shirt as my eyes fixate on the glass of sickeningly sweet lemonade in front of me.

“He was laying it on pretty thick.” He chuckles softly and the sound instantly puts a smile on my face.

“So was the brunette behind the counter, not that you seemed to notice.” His amused look gives way for a confused look with a raised brow.

“What brunette?” I laugh and shake my head, struggling to believe he could truly be so blind.

“Let me guess, you didn’t notice the waitress flirting with you either?” He glances over his shoulder at the waitress who’s standing behind the counter with her eyes drilling still into him.

“Nope.” He takes a drink of his water and sits back.

“You aren’t very observant, are you?” He chuckles and shrugs his shoulders, but his expression is one of sheer amusement.

“Only when it’s something I feel is important important.” I watch as the waitress walks over with our food. She once again leans in excessively when placing his plate on the table and this time he takes notice, but rather than taking in the view, he slides his chair away from her. Once she leaves our table, he slides back and starts eating as if nothing ever happened. We finish our meal and he pays the bill then escorts me back to the truck. We’re both quiet until we reach the edge of town and I’ve finally had enough.

“So, is that why you’re still single?” He furrows his brow and glances at me then back at the road.

“What?!” I giggle at his surprised tone and shake my head.

“Well, I’m single because I clearly attract creeps. Are you single because you fail to notice when hot girls throw themselves at you?” This time he laughs with me and I feel the tension quickly dissipating.

“I’m single because I haven’t found anyone who can keep up with my chaotic life, but I’m honestly not impressed by women who throw themselves at me.” I raise my brows and smirk.

“So, you’re all about the thrill of the chase?” His deep laughter fills the cab of the truck and he gives me a wicked grin.

“More than you realize.” His tone sends delightful chills down my spine, bringing to life thoughts that are far from appropriate considering this is my boss.

“What part of your chaotic life do women seem to have a hard time keeping up with? I get that you’re the CEO, but surely that couldn’t be enough to chase them away.” I can see that he’s planning on avoiding giving me the answer, but being stuck in this truck will give me all the time I need to pry.

“Why are you so interested in my love life, Ms. Montenegro?” I sit up straight at his use of my formal name and his tense tone.

“Everyone seems so interested in mine, so why can’t I be interested in yours? We’re stuck together for the drive back so I might as well make use of our time.” He shakes his head and lets out a gentle sigh, his tense body relaxing a little.

“My family is what tends to frighten most women away.” I laugh as I think of how my mother treated Greg and how I now wish at least one of her many attempts to scare him off had been more successful.

“Over-protective?” He laughs wildly at my question.

“You have no idea.” I smile and shrug, enjoying the playful shift in our conversation.

“You’d be surprised. My mother was pretty vicious in her efforts to protect me, especially when I brought Greg around.” He smiles softly and clears his throat.

“What was your mom like?” His question makes me smile, but it also makes my heart ache a little.

“She was amazing. She was loving, funny and god was she over-protective! When she first met Greg, she would always sit between us and was completely cold toward him. She would always address him formerly, never by his first name. When he would request that she use his first name, she would tell him that there was no point because she was going to be sure he didn’t stick around long enough for her to need to learn it. She was my rock and I miss her every fucking day.” I feel a twinge of sadness, but it’s quickly overpowered by my memories of her love.

“She sounds pretty amazing.” I sigh and turn my head to him.

“She was.” His smile is soft and sympathetic.

“Well, my family isn’t really protective in that way. They’re…different. They view anyone who’s not part of our…social circle or our life as an outsider. It makes it hard for anyone to gain any headway with them.” I frown at his admission and how unfair his situation sounds.

“So, they chase off everyone you bring around because they don’t want you dating an outsider? That’s kind of fucked up.” He nods and leans his head back on the head rest.

“It is, but they have their reasons.” I turn my entire body toward him with my anger clearly visible on my face.

“Fuck their reasons. Doesn’t your happiness matter?” He’s very clearly surprised by my outburst and his expression makes me turn back in my seat and direct my gaze to the scenery outside. The rest of the drive is quiet and I spend most of it realizing that there may be worse things in life than a cheating fiancé. When we pull onto the dirt road to the vineyard, I feel like I’m about to jump out of my skin, so as soon as the truck is parked, I hop out and walk toward my cabin and shout to Seth over my shoulder.

“Let Matt know I’m going for a swim and I’ll be back later.” I don’t wait for him to respond before heading into my cabin and changing into my bikini. I pull on a pair of shorts and hurry out to my car then take off before anyone can try to stop me because right now, I need to clear my head and figure out why the hell my boss’s confession about his family and dating life bothers me so damn much.

Chapter 15

I drive to the lake and waste no time stripping off my shoes and shorts then run in, letting the water wash away the frustration and stress of the day. I swim until I feel like my arms are too heavy to carry me then I just let my body float along the surface of the lake, watching the clouds shift and glide across the beautiful afternoon sky. The sky is shifting with the colors of the afternoon slowly giving way to the amber hues of the setting sun. I hear muffled noises, a voice? I slowly tilt my head until my ears are no longer submerged.

“Izzy!” I turn until my eyes find Seth on the shore. I contemplate just laying back and resuming my peaceful swim, but something tells me that he would come out here to get me if I did. I slowly swim back to shore and walk up to the shore beside him.

“I said I would be back later.” My voice is unintentionally cold and causes me to wince a little at its unintentional bite.

“It’s almost 7:30. What are you doing out here?” I drop down on the sandy shore with my legs slightly bent and my arms resting on my knees.

“I figure that I’m going home tomorrow so I wanted to make the most of my last night here.” My tone is much more calm now as I focus on the beauty of the nature around me.

“Is everything ok?” I sigh and can’t help but feel like that’s a loaded question, one I don’t really know how to answer.

“I don’t know. Honestly, this weekend was a lot to take in.” I decide to keep things vague so I can avoid any uncomfortable conversations right now. I think we’ve both had our fill of those.

“I get that. Look, I didn’t mean to shut down on the drive back. It’s just that I’m not used to people being so pushy about my life.” I take a deep breath and shrug, knowing I probably did push things a little too far since he is my boss.

“I shouldn’t have pushed. It’s not my business what you do or what your family thinks. I’m sorry for over stepping. It was inappropriate and won’t happen again.” I hear a loud sigh from beside me that I don’t have the energy to try to decipher.

“It was kind of refreshing if you want me to be honest. A little surprising and completely unexpected, but refreshing all the same. I can’t remember the last time someone was so passionate about anything where I’m concerned.” He chuckles and despite my best efforts to remain stoic, it makes me smile a little.

“I have plenty more of that obnoxious passion whenever you need it.” I lay back on the sand and grass, staring up at the sky as the first stars of the night are now visible.

“I have no doubt that you do. We should get back before they send a search party.” We both chuckle and I give him an amused smirk.

“What were you then if not the search party?” He laughs and turns his body to face me.

“I was plan A. Plan B will probably not be so gentle and forgiving.” He stands up and offers me his hand, so I place my hand in his as he pulls me to my feet. We both get in our cars and drive back to the vineyard where I park in front of mine and head in to get showered and changed then head to bed, not in the mood to face whatever questions may be thrown my way.

I wake to the darkness just before dawn and decide to take one last stroll through the orchard. I go out in nothing more than my sleep shorts and tank top, savoring the feel of the cool soft earth beneath my feet. When I return to the cabin, the first rays of the morning sun are beginning to break over the mountains. I walk across the gravel driveway and up the wooden porch as the morning breeze drags in the scent of pine. I draw a deep breath and open the door then begin the process of getting dressed and packing my things before loading them in the car. I go in and say goodbye to Casey and Matt before heading out and I’m slightly relieved when I’m able to leave before everyone else makes their appearance.

The drive home is peaceful until the minute I reach the city limits where the traffic becomes sheer chaos and the air is tainted with pollution and noise. I reach my home after almost an hour of being stuck in near standstill in traffic. I take my bags and head inside to unpack, already missing the vineyard and my family.

I return to work Tuesday morning and the day is dull and uneventful, but I do notice that Seth doesn’t come in. Wednesday morning I stop for coffee and am stepping into the elevator when I hear a deep soothing voice call out from behind me.

“Hold the doors!” I turn and instinctively smile when I see Seth running up to me. He steps on and pushes the button for the twelfth and seventeenth floors.

“Thank you.” He gives me a warm smile and I return it as I lean back against the cold metal wall.

“I see the office hasn’t burned down in our absence.” I laugh and shake my head at him.

“Nope. Still fully intact.” He smirks as the elevator comes to a halt at my floor.

“I hope you have a good day, Izzy.” I turn before I exit the elevator and give him a soft smile.

“You too, Seth.” I walk straight to my office, thankful that Sarah is on a call. Less than an hour into my morning I receive an email from Seth.

Ms. Montenegro,

Mr. Stone has requested a meeting with you in my office at 10am.

Mr. Iverson

I look at the clock and roll my eyes when I see it is already 9:50. I quickly rush from my office to the elevator and head to the seventeenth floor where I don’t bother checking in with Eileen before walking past her desk to Seth’s office and knock softly on the door.

“Come in.” His reply is flat and I find myself hoping that Mr. Stone isn’t already there. I walk in and all hope I had before entering the office is drown by the sight of Mr. Stone who’s sporting a creepy smile and he doesn’t even bother to hide the fact that he’s devouring me with his eyes.

“You needed to see me?” I state dryly with my attention focused on Seth.

“Please, have a seat.” I reluctantly take a seat in front of Seth’s desk and keep my body turned away from Mr. Stone as best as I can.

“Ms. Montenegro, you are a difficult person to meet with. It seems you’ve been absent a lot the past several weeks.” I give Mr. Stone a firm glare and cross my arms over my chest.

“Is there an issue with me using my vacation time, Mr. Stone?” His smile tightens and I can tell my agitated tone has struck a nerve.

“Of course not. I was actually wanting to meet with you about an upcoming event. I would like you to accompany me as a representative of the company.” I raise a brow and glance at Seth who looks completely surprised by the news and, if I’m not mistaken, a little angry.

“Will the other employees and staff be attending?” He smiles as if he’s offering me the world and I’m sure he’s expecting me to be flattered by his proposal, but I’m definitely not.

“No. You would be my plus one for the event. I’ll make sure you have an appropriate dress for the event, at the company’s expense, of course.” I smile and for a second it seems he thinks he got me, but his victorious look quickly fades when I speak.

“I respectfully decline then, sir.” His lips are now drawn tight and the corners of his lips are curled down ever so slightly.

“Excuse me?” I sit back in the chair, leg crossed and arms resting on the armrests with my fingers laced together.

“No, I will not excuse you. I will also not be attending the event with you. I’m not some accessory that you can adorn yourself with at will, sir.” Seth is staring on at our exchange in shock and unfiltered amusement while Mr. Stone is looking rather shocked himself.

“Do you like your job, Ms. Montenegro?” I take a moment to consider his words, knowing full well where this conversation is headed.

“Yes, but no job is worth selling my soul, sir.” He sits back with his arms crossed tightly over his chest.

“You do know who signs your paychecks, correct?” I can’t help it…I smirk at him and chuckle.

“Yes. Denise in payroll. Let me ask you something, Mr. Stone. How would you like to spend the next four to six months in court facing sexual harassment and wrongful termination lawsuits?” His face flushes red and I can see he’s seething. “You see, I recorded this entire conversation. I don’t think I’ll have any issue winning the case here, do you?” He stands up from his chair and looms over me with his fists clenched tightly at his side.

“Do you have any fucking idea who I am?” I stand up, our faces mere inches apart and smile.

“Indeed, I do. You’re my former employer. I’ll settle for the sexual harassment charges. Consider this my two weeks notice for which I’ll be using the final two weeks of my vacation time.” I turn to Seth and give him an apologetic smile.

“Seth, it really has been a pleasure working with you.” I turn and exit the office while Mr. Stone stands in shock.

Chapter 16

I make my way to my office, grab my things and leave, but as I’m about to climb into my car, a firm hand grabs my arm and spins me around until my back is against my car door.

“That was brilliant.” Seth’s green eyes are searing into me and he’s smiling wildly at me. “Where are you going to go?”

“I think I’m going to go stay with Matt and Casey for a while until I figure things out. I emailed a copy of the recording to my attorney on the elevator ride down and he said we’ll likely be offered a settlement. I guess I just need to work on listing my house. I’m ready for a fresh start, Seth, but that’s something I’d never get in this city.” He smiles proudly and his green eyes once again have a faint glow as I stare into them.

“If you need any help, let me know. I…I still can’t believe that all just happened!” He chuckles as he shakes his head in disbelief.

“Well, someone recently told me that a home is where your soul finds peace. I need to find my home and what better place to start than with my family? This…” I motion to the building behind him. “is a means to an end. I can’t be happy here, not truly happy.” He catches me completely off guard when he pulls some into his arms.

“I know. I knew when I met you that you were meant for more than this…you just needed to see it.” I smile against his chest and my arms find their way around his waist.

“I meant what I said up there. I really enjoyed working with you.” He pulls away and his expression is now serious.

“I told you, I help Kris every weekend. You can’t get rid of me that easily, Izzy.” I drop my hands to my side and look up into his eyes.

“I’m glad to hear it, Mr. Iverson.” He smiles wickedly and shakes his head.

“Will you be there by the weekend?” I give a soft nod.

“I’m going to call Matt and see if I can head up tomorrow. I plan to hire movers to handle anything I don’t take with me. I’ll pay someone to clean after and then a realtor can handle the listing. I just want out of here and now that I’m so close…it can’t come fast enough.” I see a mischievous glint in his lightly glowing eyes and a smile that matches. He pulls out his phone and begins typing then after a few minutes he slides his phone into his pocket.

“Ok, let’s go.” I tilt my head and raise a brow at him.

“What?” He laughs and walks to the passenger side of my Durango.

“Matt said he’ll have the cabin ready and with my help, you’ll have everything you want to take now packed and loaded in half the time.” A surge of excitement rushes through me. I’m really doing this!

“What about work?” He opens the door and climbs in.

“What are they going to do, fire me? I let Eileen know I’ll be out for the rest of the week. Now get the hell in here and let’s go!” I don’t waste any more time. I jump in and tear out of the parking garage and drive straight home. With Seth’s help, I’m able to pack everything of importance in a matter of a few hours and we’re now on our way out to the vineyard and I know some part of me should be nervous about this big change with how fast everything is moving, but all I feel is excitement and relief.

“I can’t believe I’m doing this.” My thoughts slip out of my mouth that’s been fixed in a smile since the minute I left the office.

“Are you scared? Nervous? Having doubts?” He looks at me, but something tells me he already knows…maybe it’s his boyish grin.

“Not even a little. Is that weird? I mean…I just uprooted my whole life in a single day!” My tone perfectly mirrors my excitement over the new chapter of my life that’s unfolding before my eyes.

“It’s not weird at all. It just means you’re ready. I’m proud of you, Izzy.” We turn onto the dirt road to the vineyard and my heart is racing with excitement.

“You know what? I’m kind of proud of myself.” My sudden confession causes butterflies to spring to life in my stomach.

“So, what’s next for you? Are you going to make the vineyard your permanent home?” I shrug and smile.

“I don’t know. I have no idea what I’m going to do and it’s oddly exciting!” He chuckles at my excited tone and as we pull up in front of the cabin that’s going to be my home for now, we barely have a chance to close the doors before Matt and Casey come running out of the main cabin. Matt sweeps me off my feet in the biggest hug he’s ever given me while Casey laughs beside him.

“Was Seth serious? Did you quit your job?!” Matt practically shouts in my ear.

“Yeah, I did!” He laughs and squeezes tighter before setting me back on my feet.

“Well, Casey and I already talked it over and you can stay here as long as you want, even if that means permanently.” My heart swells at their offer, this moment only solidifying my decision.

“I appreciate everything. I don’t know where I’m going to end up, but there’s no better place to start than here.” Casey pushes Matt out of the way and throws her arms around me.

“I’m glad you chose to come here. Go get settled in. Are you hungry?” She pulls back and studies my face as she goes into mother hen mode.

“No, I’m ok, but thank you.” Before I can even make it to the back of my car, Seth is already unloading boxes and taking them inside. Matt jumps in to help and we finish in just under fifteen minutes. Matt asks Seth for help loading a shipment, so I’m left alone to sort through my things and get unpacked. The first thing I set up is my stereo, immediately connecting my phone and starting my favorite playlist. Lit Up by Buckcherry fills the room and gives me the motivational push I need to get to work. I’m working on the last box and have lost all sense of time when I hear someone knock on the door frame to my bedroom causing me to stumble back against the wall.

“Hey, I was just coming to see if you needed any help, but it looks like you managed without me.” I give Seth a soft smile and scan the room, feeling rather proud of my work so far.

“Yeah, I wanted to get it done and over with. I appreciate you wanting to help though.” He nods as his eyes copy mine, scanning the room that’s now decorated with all my personal belongings.

“Why don’t you take a break. Casey’s making a late lunch since we’re having a late dinner. We ended up with a last minute delivery, so dinner will be after I get back.” I set down the pictures I’m holding and follow him out of my cabin and out to the deck behind Matt and Casey’s where she’s setting out the plates with meat and cheese for sub sandwiches.

“Are you getting settled in ok?” Casey asks as soon as she spots me walking up.

“Yes, it’s all still a bit surreal right now.” She grabs a glass and pours some lemonade then hands it to me.

“If you need anything, just let me know. It’s going to be so nice having another woman around here to keep these feral men in line.” We both chuckle as Seth, Matt and Kris stare at us with fake looks of hurt on their faces.

“You never complained about my feral nature before.” Matt hisses the words out as he wraps his arms around her and places several gentle kisses on her neck.

“We have company, Matt! No one here wants to see us making out.” Everyone laughs at their exchange as she slaps his chest playfully.

“I’m all for it. Do your thing. I’ll just be over here enjoying lunch and a show.” Kris howls out through his chuckle. In the sunlight I can see some subtle similarities between Kris and Seth that I hadn’t noticed before. Where Seth is tall and muscular, Kris is more average height and has a leaner build, but their similarities are in their facial features. They share the same jaw, nose and their eyes are almost the same beautiful green, but Seth’s are a little darker.

“You men are such dogs.” All three men are roaring with laughter, but we all manage to settle down and make our sandwiches then sit at the picnic table to eat.

“Seth, you think you can get that delivery there by seven?” I listen to their conversation while keeping my eyes focused on the woods just beyond the back yard, enjoying the serenity of the moment.

“Yeah, I can. You got the address in the GPS already?” Matt’s next comment has my gaze shifting to meet his.

“Izzy can give you directions. She knows the area well.” I raise a brow and take a drink of my lemonade.

“Directions to where?” I ask as I turn my body on the bench to face him.

“He’s taking a delivery to Murdoch’s in Ashbury.” I nod and smile, giving my silent agreement. Murdoch’s is a store I grew up going to and the owner used to give me free soda’s and ice cream after school, so of course I know it well, but Matt’s well aware of that fact.

“I can drive him there. It would be easier than giving verbal directions.” Matt’s brow raises high as he looks at me in shock.

“Are you sure, Izzy?” I can see the concern in his eye, but for once…the idea of going back to my hometown doesn’t seem so terrifying to me.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Matt raises his hands in surrender.

“Ok. You leave after you guys finish eating. Murdoch’s closes at seven.” I smile and turn back toward my plate to finish my food. I help Casey clear the table when everyone is finished and then head outside to the truck where Seth is already waiting in the passenger seat, so I hop into the driver’s seat and pull out of the driveway.

Chapter 17

“Who’s older, you or Kris?” I see his smile out of the corner of my eyes as I take us down the dirt road toward the highway.

“I’m older by just under two years. He’s a bigger pain in the ass though.” I laugh and shake my head, flashing a playful smirk his way.

“I doubt that. You’re a pretty big pain in the ass.” He gasps and feigns a look of shock.

“You’re cold!” We both laugh at his playful response.

“Well, if the rest of your family is anything like the two of you, they can’t be that bad.” He chuckles and lets out an exaggerated sigh.

“We’re very different from the rest of the family. They don’t exactly approve of the lives we lead.” I furrow my brow, but decide I don’t want to go down this rabbit hole again.

“So, tell me something I don’t know about you.” A soft chuckle rumbles from his throat and gives me the chills, but not in a bad way…not at all.

“I speak three languages, I like to paint, I play the piano, guitar and bag pipes and I really hate work events…really hate them.” I smile at his overflow of information.

“So, you’re a man of many talents.” I can tell by his posture that he’s thankful we changed the topic of conversation.

“What about you?” I think for a moment and then smile.

“I love the color red, I can play the violin, I want to get a tattoo, but I’m afraid of needles and I’m extremely terrified of cats.” He laughs, but then stops as if he just came to some great realization.

“You’re afraid…of cats?” He asks with a raised brow, likely questioning my sanity at this point.

“Not afraid, completely fucking terrified of them would be more accurate.” His confused expression only intensifies.

“Is there a reason you’re so afraid of them?” I nod and give a soft smile.

“When I was seven, I found a cat that had been hit by a car just out front of our house. I picked it up to bring it to my mom, you know, because back then I thought my mom could fix anything. When I made it to the porch, it bit down on my arm and it wouldn’t let go. I screamed and screamed until my dad came out of the house. He…he tried to pry its mouth open, but when it didn’t work he broke the cat’s neck. That, on its own, was frightening, but then I ended up with an infection that got so bad that I was in the hospital for a week. Ever since then, I have a panic attack if a cat gets too close.” He sits silently for a few tense minutes. Way to go Izzy! Scare him away with stories about your psychotic father and ridiculous feline-phobia.

“I think that would be enough to make anyone afraid.” I feel my body tense as I begin to regret sharing so much. “Was your father always so…”

“Crazy?” I volunteer at the first hint that he was struggling to find a word that may not be offensive.

“Yeah.” I sigh and try to force a smile. This is something I thought a lot about after my mother’s death. All the signs were there, but none of us truly saw the depths of his madness until it was too late.

“He was. He used to go nuts over the smallest things, but I thought that was just how dads were. I didn’t realize that he was completely insane until it was already too late, none of us did.” I take a deep breath and everything starts flowing out like word vomit. “She was going to leave him. I think she had waited so long because she wanted to make sure I was ok first. He used to hit her. She didn’t know that I knew, but I did. He was a monster.”

“That’s awful. It isn’t your fault though. You know that, right?” I nod and bite back the hurt that’s threatening to crawl to the surface.

“I stopped blaming myself a while ago. He was just such an angry person all the time. Nothing we ever did was enough to make him happy.” He reaches across the cab of the truck and grabs my hand, giving it a gentle squeeze and I’m more than happy to let those tingles calm me.

“Some people are just broken and there’s nothing anyone can do to fix them.” I see the ‘Welcome to Ashbury’ sign and quickly shake off the heaviness of our conversation.

“I used to swim in this river all the time when I was a kid, me and Matt did.” I smile as we pass over the bridge.

“How old were you when you moved away from here?” I glance over at him and smile when I see the curiosity in his eyes.

“I moved when I was eighteen. I went to college and planned to come back after I got my degree, but I was a few weeks shy when she passed away and then with Greg…I just stayed in the city instead.” He nods while his eyes take in the small town as we drive further in and all too soon, I’m pulling up in front of the store that still looks exactly how I remember it. We both climb out and head inside where I find Hank Murdoch standing behind the counter, his hair is completely gray now and his face wrinkled, but I recognize him right away and the moment he spots me, I know he recognizes me too.

“Issalia?! Oh, my lord, you’re all grown up!” He hurries out from behind the counter and wraps his arms around me.

“Hi Hank! How’ve you been?” He steps back and gives me a warm smile.

“I’ve been ok. How about you? How have you been?” I forgot how much I had truly cared about this man.

“I’ve been good. How are the kids?” He chuckles and shakes his head.

“Danny is married and she has three kids of her own now. James is still here and I’m sure he would love to see you.” I tilt my head and give him a strained smile.

“I’m not so sure about that, Hank. We didn’t exactly end things on good terms.” He waves his hand dismissively at me.

“You were both just too young to be serious. I have no doubt he’s over it.” Seth interrupts our banter with a soft voice and a warm smile.

“Sir, we have the delivery from Garett’s for you.” Hanks eyes light up and his eyes shift back to me.

“You work at the vineyard now?” I shrug and let out a soft sigh, not wanting to get into my current life changes with a ghost from my past.

“It’s…it’s complicated. I’m there for now. I don’t know if I’m going to make my place there a permanent thing or if I’m going to find something else down the line.” He nods in understanding.

“Let’s get that truck unloaded for you.” Seth and Hank get the truck unloaded quickly and once the invoice is signed, I give Hank one last hug and we head back to the vineyard.

“It seems you made an impression on some of the people here.” I laugh and nod.

“I’m sure I did. Hank caught me trying to shoplift when I was six. My dad had one of his episodes because my mom forgot to get sugar for his coffee, so I tried to steal some so he wouldn’t be mad at her anymore. When Hank caught me, I told him everything and he ended up giving the sugar to me. After that day, he would always give me free soda and snacks. Then in high school, I dated his son for a short time and I just couldn’t bring myself to go back in after I broke up with him. I’m assuming he never told his dad why I broke up with him though.” I laugh softly as I replay my recent conversation with Hank in my head.

“Why did you?” I glance over at him and smile.

“Remember how I said I attract creeps?” He nods and waits for me to continue. “Well, James and I were dating for a little over a month when he decided he was tired of waiting for me to decide I was ready to sleep with him. I ended up finding out he was screwing one of the cheerleaders. I broke up with him afterward and I’m glad I did since he ended up with an STD and everyone made the rest of his senior year hell for him.”

“It sounds like he got what he had coming to him.” I furrow my brow and let out a soft sigh.

“I thought that at first, but I got over it pretty quick. Honestly…we were just young, dumb kids. I got over it and moved on to the next jackass in line.” We both laugh, knowing exactly which jackass I’m referring to.

“You have a kind heart, Izzy. I don’t know many people who would show that kind of grace if they were faced with that situation.” I smile and shrug as I turn onto the dirt road to the vineyard.

“Life is too short to hold onto that shit. Have you had any serious relationships?” I glance over to see him shaking his head.

“No, nothing serious. I dated around when I was in school, but just didn’t find anyone I was comfortable with, or that I was willing to bring home to meet the family. It would take a brave woman to face my family.” He chuckles and I can’t help but join him.

“Well, I’m sure there’s someone out there that your family would approve of, but if you find someone who makes you happy, their approval shouldn’t matter. It’s your relationship, not theirs.” I look over and am thankful to see him smiling.

“You’re right. Just park the truck in front of the main cabin. Kris has made a mess of the garage and I doubt he’s cleaned it up yet.” I do as Seth said and then head into the main cabin to talk to Casey.

“Hey, how was the delivery?” I smile and shrug.

“It was fine. What are we doing for dinner tonight?” She whips around with an ear to ear grin, looking far too excited over the topic of dinner.

“The boys are cooking tonight! Matt wants to barbeque steaks and I made salad to go with it. We get a night off!” Her excitement makes her face glow and it really hits me how beautiful she is. Casey has always been a beautiful woman, even in high school. Her Honey brown hair and golden eyes fit perfectly with her olive complexion.

“What do you mean we? All I do is stand around sneaking bites as you cook!” We both laugh as she rushes over to hug me.

“Every chef needs someone to do quality control for them. You’re my official taste tester.” I back up and take a rather theatrical bow.

“At your service!” We both continue laughing when Matt’s voice shouts out from behind me.

“See, I’m not the only one who bows down to you!” I stand up straight and raise a brow.

“If she wants to keep spoiling me with delicious food, I’ll be on my knees for her all day long.” Matt smirks and I hear a unified hum of appreciation from behind him where I realize Seth and Kris have been standing, quietly observing our conversation.

“That I would pay to see.” Kris whips out with a playful grin.

“Time to get to cooking boys. I would like mine medium well and if I remember correctly, Izzy’s a savage who likes hers rare.” I nod enthusiastically.

“She’s always been weird like that.” Matt mumbles as he rolls his eyes.

“She has good taste. Kris and I like ours rare too.” Seth comments casually, making Matt cringe.

“Let’s get going. Can’t let the women starve.” They file out of the cabin onto the deck while I continue talking with Casey for a few more minutes.

Chapter 18

We grab beer, wine and wine glasses then head out back where the men are already working on grilling the steaks. I sit in one of the lounge chairs with my glass of wine and happily watch the way everyone interacts. This is the kind of peaceful life I’ve always dreamed of and now…now it’s my reality. I’m especially moved by the intimate and loving exchanges between Matt and Casey. It’s something I never had with Greg, not even in the beginning. I notice Casey looking at me with a questioning gaze then she walks over to me and sits in the chair next to me.

“You good?” I lay back in the chair and smile.

“I haven’t been this good for a long time.” She places a hand on my knee and gives me the most loving smile.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this happy before, Izzy.” I can’t stop my smile from widening because she’s right. I can’t remember a time when I was this happy in the seven years since I met her either.

“I honestly can’t tell you the last time I felt this happy.” Her smile widens and mine does the same.

“I hope everyone’s hungry!” Matt shouts as he walks to the picnic table with a tray in his hand. He places the steaks on the plates and Kris comes walking out of the cabin with the large bowl of salad. We eat with the men continuing with their light conversation while Casey and I are lost in a conversation of our own. When everyone is finished, Seth and Kris clear the table and begin washing the dishes while Matt cleans the grill and I sit with Casey.

“Um…would you mind if I drove down to the lake? I’ve been itching for a midnight swim.” She looks at me with a playful smile and wriggles her eyebrows at me, her playful behavior earning a chuckle from me as I shake my head at her.

“In the nude?” She whispers so that only I can hear, but my laugher gives us away anyways. I swear, this woman is crazy, but I love her for it.

“No!” I fold my arms over my chest and pretend to pout, but we both know I’m not afraid to go skinny dipping. It was actually something she and I did a lot before I moved to the city. We thought we were being brave and adventurous back then.

“Go for it. I’ll let the boys know if they ask. You do know that you don’t have to ask my permission though, right?” I smile and bat my eyelashes at her.

“But if I didn’t tell you, you would send the search party after me and if I do decide to skinny dip, I’d hate to give anyone an eyeful of my white ass.” She laughs and nods while tapping her finger on her chin.

“Point taken. Go…have some fun.” I lean across and hug her before jogging around the cabin and jumping in my car. I reach the lake as the sun is almost completely set with the faint remnants of orange and yellow fading to give way to the night. I remove my pants, shirt, shoes and socks, placing them on the passenger seat before walking to the water’s edge wearing only my black lace bra and matching underwear. I ease my way into the water with the sound of crickets serenading me and soothing my soul.

When I’m finally waist deep, I dive in, cutting through the water and feeling it cooling my warm skin. When I rise to the surface, I relax my body and allow it to float along the surface. I feel the rain beginning to fall before I hear it, the once clear night sky now clouding over and the rain is falling as if the clouds are weeping. I slowly head back to the shore where I sit beside the water and let the rain soothe over me.

I definitely feel at peace here, more so than I have anywhere else I’ve ever been. I think back to the conversation with Seth and can’t help smiling. He was right when he said that home is where your soul finds peace and I can’t deny it, not that I would ever want to…by his defininition, this place is my home. I let myself relax, thinking of the beautiful possibilities of what my future here will hold and for the first time in as long as I can remember, the thought of the future doesn’t scare me.

I’m lost in the peaceful moment when a low growl erupts from the darkness of the tree line. I quickly rise to my feet and take slow, steady steps backward toward my car with my eyes focusing on the trees in the direction of the noise. I feel the cold metal of my car press against my back and run my hands along the steel until I find the handle to the door. I rip open the door and jump in, slamming the door behind me and locking it, as if it would actually help keep out whatever wild beast was responsible for making that sound. I crawl over the center console, slide the key into the ignition and turn the car on while watching the tree line in the rearview mirror. I flip on the headlights and start to back up when I see movement in the trees behind me.

I feel my heart thundering in my chest as I quickly shift into drive and press the gas, tearing down the dirt road much faster than I intended to. I feel the moment the back end of my Durango begins to slide and I barely recover when I’m forced to slam on the breaks. Standing there, in the middle of the road before me, is a large black wolf with glowing green eyes. This wolf is easily the size of a grizzly bear and it’s slowly stalking toward me. When it comes around to the driver’s side of the car I press the gas again and speed down the road toward the cabin while the wolf follows me for a short while before disappearing back into the trees.

My mind is racing and my heart is thundering against my sternum as I try to process what the hell I just saw. I’ve never seen a wolf in real life, but I have no doubt in my mind that the wolf by the lake was no ordinary wolf. Let’s not even mention it’s eyes, the ones that seemed so familiar! I feel like I should be more frightened, really. Sure, I’m scared, but I don’t think I would’ve been if the damn thing hadn’t growled at me! This is crazy…absolutely insane and there’s no way in hell anyone will ever believe me! Hell, I barely believe myself!

When I reach the cabin, I stop the car and my eyes scan the property for any sight of the wolf. After several minutes pass, I climb out of the car and run into my cabin, slamming the door closed and locking it. I slowly walk to the bathroom, strip off my wet bra and underwear then climb into the shower. My body tenses as the icy cold water hits my skin then begins relaxing as the temperature rises, finally becoming comfortably warm. I clean off the remnants of the lake water and sand, turn off the water, wrap a towel around myself and walk into my bedroom to get my pajamas on. As I lay in my bed the image of the large wolf is ravaging my mind as I feel myself being pulled under by sleep and I welcome it with open arms.

Chapter 19

I wake up to the warmth of the sun shining through my bedroom window. I stretch and let out a soft moan as my muscles spring to life. I stumble to the bathroom to relieve myself and brush my teeth then slowly head to the kitchen to get a glass of water. I stand in front of the sink replaying the events of last night. Did I seriously see a giant wolf? It isn’t possible is it? I hear my phone’s text alert sound off in the living room, so I set my glass on the counter and head out to check it.

Casey: Breakfast is served!

Me: I’m not feeling so hot. I’m just going to stay in today.

Casey: I’ll send some food over in a few. You going to be ok?

Me: Yeah, just a headache.

Casey: Let me know if you need anything. I’ll send aspirin too.

Me: Thanks, you’re the best.

I set my phone back on the end table and am about to take a seat on the couch when there’s a knock at my door. I walk over assuming that it must be Casey, but when I open the door my eyes are met with the piercing green eyes of Seth causing flashes of the impossibly large wolf to spark back to life in my mind.

“I thought you might want some coffee.” He holds out a travel mug while his eyes are locked on mine and I see the concern in openly displayed on his face. I slowly reach out and take the mug from him, pulling it quickly to my chest.

“Thanks.” My voice is soft and weak, doing absolutely nothing to hide from him how freaked out I am.

“Are you ok? Casey said you’re not feeling well.” I turn and slowly walk to the couch, taking a seat on the edge, setting the mug on the coffee table and lowering my head with my hands over my face.

“I think I’m losing my fucking mind.” I hear the sound of my front door closing and feet shuffling across the floor toward me then feel the couch shift under his weight when he sits next to me.

“Why would you think that?” I sigh and drag my hands down my face so I can look at him. I need to be able to gauge his response, but his eyes also seem to comfort me…even if they do remind me of the giant ass wolf in the woods.

“I went to the lake last night and…I saw something…a wolf.” I see something flash across him, but it fades as fast as it appeared.

“That isn’t completely surprising. There have been a few reports of wolves down here in the valley over the past decade or so.” I shake my head…am I really going to tell him? He’s going to think I am crazy…hell…I think I’m crazy.

“But this wolf was huge! Like, the size of a full grown grizzly!” I see his eyebrow raise, but something in his eyes doesn’t reflect the surprise that his expression is showing.

“Maybe it was a bear that you saw?” I shoot up off the couch and begin pacing the floor.

“It was a wolf. I almost hit it with my car. I know a fucking wolf when I see one…and it’s eyes…” My mind holds tightly to the image of the glowing green eyes. I whip around and stare at Seth…into his piercing green eyes and feel my mouth slowly growing dry.

“What about its eyes?” He stands up and walks toward me with his eyes never leaving mine. This is impossible…I’m definitely losing my damn mind. I look away and shake my head.

“Nothing. This is ridiculous. I’m…I’m fucking losing my mind. Shit…what if what my dad had is hereditary?!.” He grabs my shoulders and looks me in the eye as if he’s attempting to keep me from spiraling any further.

“You’re not crazy. I believe you. Just take a deep breath. If you say you saw a giant wolf, then you saw a giant wolf and for the record, you are nothing like your father.” I stare at him in disbelief. Does he really believe me, or is he just trying to get me to calm down?

“It sure feels like I’m crazy.” I can’t stop staring at his eyes. What the fuck is wrong with me?!

“You aren’t crazy.” I crease my brow and study his features, desperately seeking any sign of what he’s really thinking.

“How are you so certain? And how many giant wolves have you seen?” I ask with a sarcastic tone. I walk around him and am about to sit when his next comment halts my movement entirely. His words are close to a whisper and I’m not sure he intended for me to hear them, but I do.

“More than you.” He gives me a quick glance and runs a hand over his face. “I need to go help Kris. I’ll check on you later. If you need anything, Casey said to have you text her.” He makes a hasty retreat before I can question him about his comment and I spend my whole morning running through the encounter with the wolf last night then trying to figure out why the hell Seth acted so weird when I told him about it.

After replaying everything about last night for at least the hundredth time, I realize something that somehow hadn’t occurred to me until this very moment…I left my clothes out there! I’m determined to not let some giant wolf make me too afraid to visit my favorite place here, even if the damn thing is the size of a Buick, so I throw on the black bikini I had stashed away in the dresser then pull a black sun dress over it, slip on my shoes, grab my keys and hurry out to my Durango. I thought I’d be nervous to go back out there, or at the very least, a little afraid, but I’m actually feeling really calm right now.

I pull into the clearing and sit in my car for a minute while my eyes scan the tree line for movement only to come up empty handed. Everything is still, there’s not even a breeze to shift the leaves in the trees, so I take a deep, fortifying breath then climb out of my car and make my way to the edge of the water, but as I scan the shore, my clothes aren’t here. Maybe I grabbed them in my panic, or maybe the wolf took them? Ha! Why would a wolf take my clothes?! Shaking off the ridiculous thought, I pull my dress over my head, fold it neatly before setting it on the hood of my Durango then waste no time getting into the water.

As seems to be my MO when I come out here, I clearly lose track of time, something I only realize when I hear the muffled sound of what I think is a car door closing followed by the sound of a muffled voice. I’ve been floating in the water for so long that my fingers are starting to prune and when I open my eyes and look to the shore, I see Matt waving at me. I’m surprised by the bite of disappointment when I realize it’s not Seth who came for me, though I don’t want to feel disappointed…I shouldn’t be disappointed. I start swimming back to shore, not having realized I drifted so far out.

“Hey, we were worried about you. I thought you weren’t feeling good?” I give him a smile that I know isn’t exactly convincing.

“It’s not that I’m sick or anything, just…kind of got lost in my own head and needed time to sort things out.” I finally reach him on the shore where he quickly pulls me into a hug without any concern for the water that quickly soaks into his clothes.

“Seth said you saw a wolf out here?” I nod against his chest then pull back, hoping he won’t try making me feel crazy…or maybe I’m hoping he’ll tell me I am…I honestly don’t know anymore. Do I want the giant wolf to be confirmed as being real?

“I did. It was the biggest damn wolf I’ve ever seen too.” His brow furrows, but it’s more of a thoughtful look than a look of doubt.

“So, you saw a big ass wolf, but thought it would be smart to come out here alone? Izzy, if there’s a wolf running around, you need to be careful.” I know he’s right, but something in me wants to see that wolf again. Maybe I’m hoping I just had a moment of temporary insanity and it was all a figment of my imagination, or maybe I’m hoping I actually saw it.

“I know and I was being careful. I’m sorry if I made you guys worry.” We both turn our heads toward the dirt road when we hear the sound of another car approaching. I shouldn’t be surprised to see Seth driving up, but with how he left this morning, I guess I kind of am. Matt and I both watch as Seth parks beside my Durango then climbs out and makes his way toward us.

“I see you found her.” I can see how tense he is and I instantly feel guilty for making everyone worry.

“Sorry, just needed to clear my head. I didn’t mean to make you all freak out.” Matt gives me a side hug then steps back and flashes me a smile that’s clearly forced.

“We weren’t freaking out, Izzy, we were just worried about you. I should head back and let Casey know you’re okay. Dinner should be ready in about an hour.” Man, Seth wasn’t kidding when he said the others aren’t being very discreet. I catch the look Matt gives Seth before heading back to his truck and we remain quiet until Matt’s truck disappears from our view.

Chapter 20

“Can we talk?” I let out a heavy sigh and nod as I make my way over to my Durango to grab my sundress, quickly pulling it on to help fend off the breeze against my still wet swimsuit and damp skin.

“What about?” My voice sounds more defensive than I intended, but I can’t help feeling like I need to guard myself against him after the moment in the cabin earlier. I feel like he’s keeping something from me and I’ve always hated being left in the dark.

“The reason I believe you saw what you say you did is because I’ve seen them too.” Okay, not exactly what I was expecting him to say…actually, not even in the realm of possibilities for what I thought he would say.

“You’re saying that you’ve seen giant wolves with glowing fucking eyes? Seriously?” He nods his head, but his serious expression perfectly matches the sincerity in his eyes which has officially left me speechless.

“I actually see them all the time. They won’t hurt you though. They tend to be curious, but they would never hurt you, Izzy.” Okay, so maybe he’s the one who’s lost his damn mind around here. I knew he was too damn perfect!

“It growled at me…then in ran at me while I was in my car. Doesn’t seem very friendly to me.” I try injecting some humor into my tone, but with how he’s now pacing and raking his hand through his hair, I’m guessing it fell flat.

“Okay, I’m going to ask you to trust me here. Can I see your keys for a minute?” I shouldn’t hand my keys over to a man who looks like he’s a few seconds shy from being fitted for a straight jacket…but…I find myself handing him my damn keys like an idiot. I watch him closely as he walks over to his car, strips down to nothing but his boxers and then, to my shock and dismay, he tosses my key on the driver’s seat then locks his door and closes it!

“Okay, just keep an open mind and remember what I said…he won’t hurt you.” Yep, pretty sure I’ve lost it because now I’m nodding like this is all completely normal. I watch him take a few steps back and I’m left with my mouth hanging open and my eyes wide as his body begins to transform right before my eyes. It happens pretty quickly, but seems entirely unpleasant. Once it’s over, I’m standing there staring at a large black wolf with, you guessed it, beautiful glowing green eyes.

“Holy shit…you’re…how the fuck are you a wolf?! Oh shit…my boss is seriously a werewolf…well, ex-boss. God, and now I’m talking to a damn wolf. I hope you know I’m going to have so many questions when the shock wears off and you damn well plan on answering them.” I feel absolutely certifiable as I scold the wolf, even going as far as to wave my finger in his face.

“So…you really aren’t going to try to eat me or anything…right?” I thought I was already going crazy, but then the damn wolf shakes its head at me! The giant beast lets out a soft whimper and it makes my heart clench and, like the idiot I apparently am, I take a step closer.

“Can…can I touch you?” Not only does this wolf nod at me, yes, I said he nods at me, but he lays down on his belly and crawls slowly toward me until his head is close enough for me to reach him. His fur is like black silk and his green eyes watch my every movement with intense interest, but I don’t feel threatened by him. He’s actually a lot like a giant puppy, not that I’ll be telling him that.

“Okay, can you transform back into Seth?” The wolf gives me a curious look then stands up and walks around Seth’s car where I hear the cracking and groans coming from Seth until he stands up on the other side…naked! I should probably look away when he starts pulling on a pair of shorts, but I don’t. The car is blocking everything from his navel down and I worry that if I look away, he’ll disappear…or maybe turn into a wolf again.

“You’re taking this surprisingly well.” His tone is cautious, but I guess he’s right. I may be freaking out a little on the inside, but most sane people would’ve run for the hills if they saw their former boss turn into a damn wolf.

“Maybe…or it could be shock…or I really have lost my damn mind. So, this…is this…shit, you’re a werewolf Seth! Seriously?!” Okay, so by the end I’m shouting at him. I guess maybe I’m not taking it that well.

“Okay, let’s sit down and we’ll start with the basics.” He leads me over to the edge of the water and plops his werewolf butt right down in the sand and slides his feet into the water. I should run, but damn my curiosity and absolute shit survival instincts! Before I can give myself a chance to second guess everything, I sit down beside him, mimicking his pose as I wait for answers.

“Alright, first of all, we’re shifters, not werewolves. We don’t turn into wolves only on the full moon and we can’t turn others into wolves by biting or scratching them.” He sounds irritated as he explains this and it’s mildly amusing until I pick up on one very important detail…

“You said we…there are more wolves running around here?!” He nods his head, takes a deep breath and locks his beautiful green eyes with mine.

“Kris, his wolf is the one you saw out here and…Casey. She’s our cousin.” Of all the questions I should have, only one flies out of my mouth before I can stop it.

“Does Matt know?” When he nods his confirmation, I actually feel my heart ache a little. They have this huge secret and yet they didn’t trust me with it? I mean, sure, I probably would’ve freaked out at first, but we’re family.

“But Matt isn’t one…right?” He winces like I slapped him and that’s when it hits me…my cousin is a damn werewolf…or shifter.

“Everyone at the vineyard is.” I shake my head, completely blown away by the fact that I’ve been surrounded by these people and had no freaking clue that they weren’t just people at all.

“Well, I’m not, so not everyone is.” He gives me the most pained look and I wonder if he could really have more to add to this right now…but he certainly does.

“Actually…the first time I met you, I had picked up your scent when you walked into the building. I knew I needed to meet you. Did you know you smell like the forest after it rains with a very subtle hint of vanilla?” He has a faint smile on his face as he finishes speaking and I can’t fight my own smile in response.

“Well, that’s…flattering? I think? But I’m not a…shifter. I think I would know if I could turn into a wolf…wouldn’t I?” And now he’s giving me a sympathetic look…why is he looking at me like that?

“Izzy, I can’t tell you why you can’t shift, but I can assure you that you have shifter blood running through your veins. It’s what drew me to you. Hell, I’m not the only one who was drawn to you.” The last comes out in what I’m fairly certain is a growl, yet for whatever reason, maybe insanity, it doesn’t scare me.

“Who else? Oh god, don’t say Greg!” That has him laughing and shaking his head at me, but I’m seriously hoping he doesn’t say my ex is one of these shifters.

“No, not Greg. Mr. Stone.” I groan and drop my head against my knees.

“Somehow that seems almost worse, but it makes sense…he did behave like a dog. If I really am like you…why can’t I turn into a wolf and why didn’t anyone tell me about it sooner? And wouldn’t that mean my parents were shifters too?” It seems my brain went from stalled out, straight into overdrive mode.

“Yes, your parents, or at least one of them, would have been shifters. I actually did some research and I’m pretty sure it was your dad. With how you described him, it sounds like a rogue shifter losing control of his wolf which, unfortunately, isn’t uncommon. Wolves are social creatures and without a pack, they tend to slowly become feral. His anger and aggression certainly fit the bill. As for you not being able to shift, I can smell the wolf in you, but it’s not a strong scent. It could be trauma, or someone could’ve bound your wolf. I’m not entirely sure.” What…the…hell? This shouldn’t be the craziest part of all this, especially not after watching Seth turn into a damn wolf, but somehow, it is.
